This guy is insane. I’ve never seen such…. I don’t even have to words. The clarity of the sound and the speed of his fills and time changes are just next level. I couldn’t imagine being this good at drumming. I would never stop playing.

@@L33Reacts the song is great, but almost a lottle over the edge with the epicness. It will be a good introduction to wintersun for sure, but when it comes to albums, I think their debut is the best :)

Kai is now the drummer of NIGHTWISH. I believe he took over in 2013 after other drummer had to give it up due to severe insomnia.

@@L33Reacts According to contemporary sources Kai Hahto was Jukka Nevalainen's drum tech while Jukka was still playing with Nightwish so when Jukka could no longer could play with Nightwish he recruited Kai to take over the role (first temporarily, then permanent member). And as other has mentioned Wintersun's bass player (you will see & hear him if you go with any of the Sonic Studio rehersal videos) Jukka Koskinen is now also with Nightwish. Both Kai and Jukka Koskinen are currently permanent members of both Wintersun and Nightwish, as I understand it for Wintersun they record in studion but not when playing live (so Wintersun use session/live musicians for that live now). For Nightwish Kai does both studio and live, I expect the same for Jukka but he's not been with them long enough to do any studio work yet. Back to Wintersun - as I understand it Jari writes everything for Wintersun except the drums, with Kai writing the drums.

Kai is an absolute beast. Jukka Nevalainen, from Nightwish, is one of my all-time favorite drummers, and when forced to retire, he's replaced by this guy (also one of my all-time favorite drummers)? Us Nightwish fans are so lucky (don't even get me started on the vocalists).

Wintersun is one of my favorite bands for many years, I've seen this video about 100 times, and it still blows me away! Before I saw it I was convinced Kai had four arms...

Another Wintersun song you'll want to check out is Time from the live rehearsal session at Sonic Pump studios. I think this is from that same session, the full band video is also on KZbin. As someone mentioned Kai is now the current drummer for Nightwish. He took over from original drummer Jukka Nevalainen in 2014. Jukka had to step aside due to health issues caused by severe insomnia, but remains with Nightwish in management. Kai and Jukka are friends , so when Jukka called him, he accepted. If you do Time from that live session, you will also see current Nightwish bassist Jukka Koskinen, who was asked when Marko left in 2021.

AFAIK this playthrough is from Extreme Drummers Universe 2014. The Sonic Pump studios "live rehearsal" (IE preparing for a tour) your mentioning was IIRC much earlier, but the remaster from those sessions are awesome. SOWAS is available from that and definitely worth hearing but for a reaction it might be better to go with the song Time instead.

Great reaction, Kai Hahto is amazing. You definitely should react to the live rehearsal session of this song. Also, you are into Nightwish, watch his work on "Poet and the Pendulum" live from Wembly. For more great drumming, Blind Guardian "Blood of the Elves" and "Deliver Us for Evil" have great shots of the drummer. Keep rocking.

Check out: Kai Hahto drum solo at Tuska Open Air 2005 It's only 4 minutes. Not necessarily asking for a reaction. There are lots of Kai Hahto drum cam videos with Nightwish and other bands. Rotten Sound for example.

I saw one drummer who did an reaction to this say that he has seen and loves how these Scandinavian and some European drummers do Tom hits and they aren't just the same tone, kihe Kai here he made a melody while playing every Tom on his kit.. And have to say I see that much less on American metal drummers.

Kai Hahto is an extraordinary technician on the kit. Watch him enough and you'll notice he can switch lead hand from right to left and back...just for fun! And he has one tiny slip of his left foot every now and again...proof to the world that he's human! Check out his drum cams from Nightwish shows! And he has many clinics posted up...see one for Nightwish song, Stargazers. *still not cool to talk over the artist's performance!

I don't know all the names of the parts of the kit but I think when you see his left foot go sideways he isn't slipping but activating another part of the kit. You can see it in other drumcams of his. Such a phenomenal drummer and a true lovely guy!
