I opted for the Sigma 2 years ago and have been happy with the image quality. But I've had to spend about $800 sending the lens back twice over these two years between repair fees and having to rent lenses in its place due to the dust issue you mentioned. $800 over 2 years isn't bad, but I do wish Sigma admitted this issue and did a free manufacturer recall rather than making me pay for their mistake. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth regarding my opinion of Sigma as a company.
@enjoygary2 жыл бұрын
Is this normal?
@jettlifeproductions2 жыл бұрын
@@enjoygary it absolutely should not be. And it's been fine since the last time I sent it in. So I believe Gerald is correct in saying that some Sigma 24-70 lenses have that problem and some don't. And that also tells me that Sigma is aware of the issue. Now did they just silently create a 24-70 mkii? Are they intentionally banking off of people that they know have a faulty lens by forcing them to pay for repairs? I brought this issue up with Sigma, they basically said that they will consider my complaint and reduce the cost of the repair but I don't think they did. And I needed my lens back so I just paid it anyways.
@robinprobyn19712 жыл бұрын
@@jettlifeproductions Yes I looked into this before buying a 24-70 Sigma last year. The dust is / was, coming in through the zoom mechanism , an inherent problem for this design in all lenses ,BUT it seems the early runs actually had seals that were "too good" and created more a a vacuum cleaner effect , actually drawing in tiny dust particles and so defeating the whole idea . They now will change the seals , and in some locations they were doing it for free , as an unofficial recall but it seemed totally random. As you mention , the problem was never recognized by Sigma , and thats where they have screwed up with their customer base, personally I think its down to some loss of face thing in Japan. Sony did the same with the f5/55 infamous purple grid on the sensor problem , Sony in the UK / US where changing out an un blackened part that caused this effect ,for free , but in Japan they totally refused to even recognize it as not only a problem , but even that it existed or that they were being replaced overseas for free. Mine bought last year has not had any dust problem so far. Admitting fault, it seems ,is just not part of Sigma HQ,s corporate policy ..

Thanks Gerald for your honest, no nonsense review! I had the original 24-70, and didn't find it to be that bad...although its images were clinical to my eyes. Having the Tamron 35-150 now, I'll never go back to a 24-70. While I do miss having a wider focal with the zoom, the Sony 20mm G compliments very nicely. (So the extra weight of the Tamron is offset in my bag.)

Such a useful comparison! This might seem like a weird detail to fixate on, but I am honestly astounded that Sony isn't including the lens breathing correction on the A1 (as a $6500 USD flagship) and the A7S iii and FX3 (as $4500 video-first cameras). It shouldn't be an incredibly tall order to include software corrections to visual defects that ship with the lenses THEY produce. It's not like we are asking for the kitchen sink here, they're first party lenses!

Great review straight to the point. I upgraded from the sigma 24-70 2.8 to the new sony 24-70 2.8 gm ii primarily due to a few reasons: AF consistency/accuracy/speed, weight, corner sharpness, weather sealing (I didnt have dust issues with the sigma) and overall controls and package. No it's not really worth twice the price of the sigma but the overall package you get with the new sony is pretty nice. I'd say the sigma might be a bit less prone to flare shooting into the sun but the sony does a great job as well. The price of the sigma is so compelling that I might actually buy another one as I really loved the rendering of that lens even though I have the new GM II. Also I will say the new GM II lens has better micro contrast than the sigma but I'd say for about 90% of shooters the sigma just wins due to the value ratio alone and it will be more than enough.

Like always, what makes Gerald's videos so impressive is that he presents the choices in an extremely unbiased fashion. Some reviewers elegantly dodge any potentially negatives of a product if they are image ambassadors etc :-) It seems though like all these new premium zoom lenses (just like the new 70-200 ii) still have pretty weak bokeh and out of focus transitions. Just looking at the focus breathing section starting around @3:02min this is a rendering that if we talk about prime lenses you get at the 800 USD below mark from budget manufacturers. Even very old primes typically render so much better. So I am surprised that in most reviews people say "rendering is excellent". I guess what is meant is "for being a zoom lense it's as best as you can hope for". Seems to be really hard to get very nice rendering on top of all the other stuff that needs to be corrected in zoom lenses, some compromises have to be made after all.

What Sony should have done here is offered the specs of the GM2 at a price range slightly above the Sigma. For double the price and then some the Sigma is still looking like the best all around option if we're looking at price to performance ratio. In my opinion this thing is going to sell like shit at that price point. I've been torn between waiting for this or going for the 50mm 1.2 and giving up convenience for optical specs but this has confirmed that I'm just going for the 50. If I'm going to spend 2300 I might as well go for the best of the best with honors

Would love to see that. If Sony priced this at, say $1598, it would be incredibly tempting for loads of people and wouldn't be too hard to justify. 2:15 Fun fact, the Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 isn't mechanically parfocal. Slightly disconnect the mount and zoom in, and you'll find that the lens is massively compensating with the autofocus. Reconnect the lens, zoom in super fast and it dips out of focus very momentarily as the focus motors try and keep up. So the real question is, if this is software-driven in modern lenses anyways, why didn't Sony offer this feature? And could it be pushed in a future update?

I have Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II. Scored one in great shape second hand. I shoot a lot of outdoor scenes, I get something I call morse code chromatic aberration, as it lines along edges. In some scenes I can adjust the aperture to reduce fringing significative, it definitely helped a lot, I will experiment with this in various sceneries. But at 2.8 it will have lots of it. I've not seen anyone show this anywhere yet. So I posted some examples of this on my Flickr. I hope my lens is not broken somehow, but it was from a camera store so was likely inspected, but it was in mint condition. 7:14 So does the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II. Mine had zero dust, despite being an used lens, it was in mint condition, no dust, I checked straight away, but after using it a while it had some dust between the elements.

Lens looks good.. I’d love to upgrade my 24-70gm & 70-200gm to the V2s for that weight saving! It’s just hard spending money on something you’ve already got instead of something exciting that you don’t have haha! 😂 just another one to “put on the list”

Well I m using a 24-70 canon ok my FX9 and was looking forward for a sony equivalent with a good manual focus option for film work. Which the previous sony lenses sucked balls at imo. So really excited about this one

v1 is still good. I'll just slowly save until I can get it.

I mena perfocality is absoultely a must if you shoot video. Zooming and loosing focus is jsut not somethng you want with a video setup :)

nice review. look like if you need the best of market you pay x2 more. that dont mean is x2 better. Just pay for the best. Is like battery chargo to 80% in 15 min. if you want the other 20% must wait another 15min. Maybe the pro can aford it but social producer i dont think.
