A 24-70 is a very versatile lens, it's great if you're just starting out in filmmaking and you're wondering which lens should you buy first, also a good 24-70 lens will last you a lifetime. On the other hand, your comment is valid, it may lack character however you can also upgrade your gear in the future and opt for a good prime lens set. Tip: Own the basics and rent the rest if you're doing this as a career 😉

Hey yo, quick tip to anyone who doesn't vlog or point a camera at their own face from a couple centimeters away.. A 24-70 f/2.8 is pretty much the only lens you will need if filming with a full frame camera, I'd recommend the sigma unless you've got very deep pockets. Also love your new secretary Matti, he knows his codecs well. 👌

so true. if i'd shoot a documentary with a director/producer the 24-70 or even 24-105 would be my first choice. maybe a prime for b-roll after that if we have time. Been there done that, if your job is to get the shot... .

The tightening of the zoom ring is probably so that it won't change focal lengths if it gets bumped or for an overhead shot so that the weight of the lens doesn't change the focal length (that has happened to me on a sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 because it was really loose). Loosening focal ring it will help with smoother zooms.

I use the sigma 24-70 2.8 ART and it’s one of the best lenses I’ve ever owned. It’s so versatile and I use it on most if not every shoot unless I’m using my underwater housing, or doing architecture photography in which I use my 20mm 1.8. Carrying 4 lenses to achieve the relatively same focusing range (24mm 35mm 50mm and 85mm), just isn’t realistic for a lot of people who aren’t in a studio. This lens looks great but with already owning the sigma, this doesn’t offer enough difference

I think it’s completely depending on what line of work your in. I mean, for example for run & gun work, i think this is the absolute best if you don’t know what to expect and want a variety of shots. But yeah, not the best at anything, i can agree on that, but maybe the best allrounder.

I function solely off 24 and 85mm, the 85 can grab close and medium shots while the 24 can grab any wide documentation shot I want. You don’t NEED anything just do what works for you; I wanted faster apertures so I went primes

It's funny to hear you say that you find the 24-70mm f/2.8 to be too average. I didn't buy one for the same reason. I purchased ultra-wide and telephoto zooms & primes in 35mm f/1.2 & anamorphic 50mm t/2.9 instead. But, for "run&gun" video I usually use a 24-105mm f/4 macro stabilised lens, as it covers a larger zoom range. (Panasonic S1H.)

I've been trying to get ahold of the Tamron 35 - 150 2.0. The versatility and the price make it really appealing. And for traveling, having two or three multiple purpose lenses means the most to me. I love my primes, but too much space for most traveling.
@robcoventry574
@robcoventry574 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting to hear why you haven’t purchased a 24-70. What’s interesting is your reasons not to buy are the reasons that is my number one go-to lens. I don’t like to carry three lenses (35mm, 50mm, & 85mm) when I can have one that covers roughly the same range. When was the last time I needed more than f/2.8? Can’t remember. In fact, f/2.8 is more than most of m6 shots. Sure, you get amazing bokeh with an f/1.2 but that is just over two stops better. It also makes the focus plane about five mm thick, so eye in focus but nose out. Love my RF 24-70. It’s always on my camera, every day, walk around lens.

depth of field is relative to the distance from subject, so a 50 f1.2 wide open actually have decent depth of field and subject separation for mid length to full body shots

I have to say, I had a 16-35 for a while, but when you're actually going light, it just isn't enough range for pulling an interesting variety of shots together for a mini-sequence, especially on FF! Switched out to a 24-70 2.8ii (Canon) a few years ago and never looked back. Truly cannot love any 24-105 or similar though, that F4 just really takes the edge off everything and it's just a bit dull! Joined the Fx6 gang a month ago now though, so looking at the painful reality of selling all my canon glass as that sony AF is just W I L D.

Years ago, I bought a 35-70mm f/2.8 D Nikkor auto focus zoom lens. Later, I upgraded to 28-70mm f/2.8 D Nikkor auto focus zoom lens. When Nikon replaced the 28-70 D with the 24-70mm f/2.8 G auto focus zoom lens, I did not buy it because it was a “G” lens that did not have an aperture ring. Some of my camera bodies need the aperture ring for exposure control.

I have to disagree. Unless you are holding the camera and pointing it at yourself all the time, a 24-70 is a much better story telling lens than a wide zoom. I would much rather have a wide, fast prime such as a 20mm f1.8, 24-70 f2.8, and a 70-200 f2.8. Work horse focal ranges are convenient while the specialty ones (wide or telephoto) are present and at fast apertures when needed. Obvious use cases vary but that kind of kit is extremely flexible.

I will say though that I still keep one just for those times that I feel lazy and only want to carry around a single body+lens. But there's nothing like a 14mm, or an f1.2-1.4 prime, or a real telephoto zoom for that special sauce you can't get with a 24-70.

I think that is always a "depends" situation, for some, a 24-70 is the perfect lens, for instance, a wedding photographer, has no much time to keep changing lenses all day, has to be fast, so this range, fits in every situation, of course, not super wide, not super zoom or not super fast, but it does the job done, which is the most important, is not the tool, is the artist, and how uses the gear

for crop sensor I think the 17-55mm is better but that’s just my opinion.

The 24-70mm is over hyped. It encompasses the most common focal lengths, but it doesn't do them as well as their prime counterparts. I'd be willing to pay $3k for one IF AND ONLY IF, they could get it to a f/2 or f/1.8. Beyond that, I'll get a used 24mm GM and a 85mm.

The place of a 24-70 isn't for being the best at anything. It's for being a crisp, fairly quick lens for working quick in dynamic stations. Shooting weddings with RF Canon, mine gets used all the time with the RF 70-200. I sub them out for 35/85 in portrait and super low light situations, and use the tiny 16mm 2.8 when I really need to go super wide or do vlog stuff. Even then I find myself often stopping down my primes to 2.8 or 4 so both people are the point of focus on couples portraits.

My 24-70 Sigma Art lens is coming next week. In the video, you mention 24-70 lenses don't do anything perfectly but a lot of things just ok. The quote "a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one" comes to mind. For someone who doesn't need ultra wide or telephoto, 24-70 is the sweet spot and all I need (for now).

As a beginner last year with an A7iii, the 24-105 f4 I tested in the store blew my mind with all of the new options it gave me. So I've had it for nearly a year now, and although there is a large following for this lens, there are many folks who just state that it is just not good enough optically, and have replaced it with the sigma 24-70 art. I would love to hear from anyone who has experience of both these lenses...as I'm thinking of trading this lens in now. Maybe for a 24-70 and a 70-200 or a 100-400.

The Sony 24-105 G is a very good lens. Don’t listen to the rubbish comments. It can produce great result in the right hangs! Ok, it is not the greatest for low light but the extra 70-105mm reach is very handy. Yes 24-70 2.8 GM2 is the top dog!

24-70 2.8 GM2 and 24-105 4.0 G serve slightly different purposes. If money is not an issue, keep the 24105G as well when you are just walking about (of course sell it if budget is an issue and you can live without 70-105mm). Buy 24-70 / 70-200 GM2 (Then you have 24-200 2.8 by carrying a bit more weight). Later can add 1.4/2.0x to make up to 140-400mm 5.6.

Seriously, I am impressed that you could jump up on the couch like that in skinny jeans and run away. But I do find the 24 to 70 to be a good all around lens especially when shooting on location.
