Nice review Dustin! One question, when I shoot landscape, on the color of the mountains far away look very much magenta, very strong on the red side, is this normal or a product fault? I bought mine 2nd hand and Im using it on my a7riv. But I did correct it on my ipad tint correction

Was lucky to pick this lens up early on as it was a hot seller and happen to be in stock at my local Camera shop. I didn't really expect to like a 24mm prime but once I tried it I just love the rendering it had. I bought it right then and there and it's one of my favorite lens to use for general photography. Love the rendering and image quality. It was a very unique look and really enjoy using it. Also a plus is the very light weight and compact size for a 24mm 1.4 prime lens. Great on my gimbal too!

This would definitely be in my collection if it had been made available when I bought my Batis 25/2. The Batis is a fantastic lens in every sense, even in the looks department, but having the flexibility of an f/1.4 is always a good thing, especially considering that fact that it's only 100g or so heavier (Sony 445g VS Batis 335g).

I would be open to the idea other than the fact that 24mm isn't a focal length I reach for often....nor one that I'm desperate to have a wide aperture on. I would be much more likely to reach for a 35mm lens for portraits, for example. This would be my top 24mm pick, but I'm not one of the people who love the focal length.

Dustin Abbott I said it was a “good and balanced review”. There was nothing wrong with it, and I always value your opinions. My point was that having heard your review, perhaps I would not buy the lens. My own personal experience would lead me to recommend the lens to anyone looking for a lens of this focal length. It is sharp, good quality build, full of features. Apologies for commenting as it seems to have caused confusion I had not intended.

Hi Dustin. Very nicely done lens review! I am a Fujiflm X-System landscape and product photographer, and have found the Fujinon XF16-55 f/2.8 Zoom to be quite sharp at f/8, and delivers images with enough sharpness and edge-to-edge detail that holds up in a 24" x 36" poster print. With respect to bokeh, I require sharp detail throughout my product images, so I never shoot wide open, preferring the optimum apertures of f/8-11. And, with the Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro, the sharpest lens I've ever used, if I need to use focus stacking to ensure maximum sharpness and detail, I am obtaining detail that would rival FF and possibly even medium format, IMHO. That said, do you think that I would see an improvement in sharpness/detail retention in a 24"x36" poster print from the Sony a7 System over my Fuji X-System? Thanks again, sir.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 4 жыл бұрын
I can't really answer that, as I'm not often printing that size. I don't think you are getting detail that rivals Medium Format, however, as that would defy physics. I do prefer FF or MF over APS-C for rendering fine details (and nuance in light and color gradations), but I also think that modern APS-C cameras can deliver amazing results.
@stevelink21
@stevelink21 4 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI Dustin, thanks for the reply! Regarding my statement about detail rivaling MF, I was only speaking subjectively, and refering only to my small product images that I use focus-stacking on, in which I manually focus on anywhere from 10 to 40 separate points on the subject, and combine those images in Affinity Pro and Photoshop. This results in a file somewhere around 240MB, which is why I made that statement. I do realize that the larger the format, the better overall image quality, but I was just waondering how much more sharpness/detail I'd get in general, by moving from the sxcellent Fuji APS-C System to a FF System like the Sony a7Riii and some good Sony/Zeiss optics. In fact, I've love to see a comparison between the Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro and the Sony 90mm f/2.8 GM Macro, in terms of sheer image sharpness! Thanks again!

Dustin, great review. Thanks for your honesty. I bought the lens also for Astro as advertised by some Sony „Artesian“. I can confirm that there is significant coma present in the edge of the frame. I am eliminating them by creating panorama shots using Lightroom. This process (I don’t know why) eliminates all coma at 1.4 in all part of the frame including the edges. However, I would never sell it, because that is a small problem compared to the great Autofokus, sharpness and bokeh rending.

Dustin, like many, I should admit I do prefer the test chart better. I hope, my suggestion doesn't annoy you, but, much I have to stress that yours are among the most professional (and your delivery - among the most mature and no-nonsense) of all photography gear reviews on KZbin, I think, zooming into the various focus chart areas (as Christopher Frost does in his reviews) would help determine the centre, off-centre and edge performance of a given lens / lens-camera combination better than a global view alone. The usefulness of zooming onto various segments of a test chart would be particularly evident when watching your reviews on smartphones (as, I am certain, everyone does often, as I do). I'm also thinking, another, larger test chart for far focus would be more useful than landscape capture samples. Best regards.

Dustin, I think you have done a fantastic job showcasing the low light capabilities of the new Sony 24mm F.14 GM. I liked the video and subscribed to your channel. Do you think the low light capabilities of the 24mm F.14 GM outweigh the 16-35mm F2.8 GM for outdoor low light video conditions drastically? I do a lot of low light virtual walk tours with the 16-35mm F2.8 GM right now (Using A7iii body + Zhiyun Crane 2 Stabilizer). I usually set the focal length to around 17mm or 18mm to compensate for the Sony 4K video crop and Adobe Premiere software stabilization crop while still providing a true virtual wide angle experience. Despite being absolutely blown away by the 24mm F1.4, I am concerned it is simply not wide enough for my style of videos. I definitely welcome your opinion if you know any better alternative. Anyway I would greatly appreciate if you could check out my recent videos and provide HONEST feedback. Subscribe if you enjoy :)

Tbh I woulnd't recomend the Sigma 14-24 over this Sony for Astrophoto, the 2 stop advantage definitely is waaay more noticeable than the little bit of coma advantage of the 14-24, also if you are shooting stuff like meteors the extra 2 stops are just invaluable

Hi Dustin Abbott, my name is Julien iam form the Netherlands. Could you do a comparison review between this Sony lens and the Milvus 135mm for botanical purpose with a magnification of 1:2. That can be achieved with extention tubes. Yours Faithfully, Julien

Hi Julien, I'm afraid that I can't. I've already had to send the 135GM back to Sony (sniff); it was a loaner.

So, the lens is not the best option for astrophotography? How interesting, since Sony has stated that this is particularly designed to serve the purpose of astrophotography, especially in comparison to Sigma lenses. I found this observation in your video particularly interesting!

The lensmakers always suggest that their lens is the best at everything, but that doesn't automatically make it so.

Hi Dustin! I do agree with you on the star part of the video. I saw reviews that hyped up the performance at F1.4, so to be honest I thought that I had a faulty lens when I tested mine for the first time. Glad you where honest about it's performance, shame some reviews are misleading. What caught my ear though is that you claim that the Sigma 14-24 is better for astro? Will you be able to review it for us? And if someone reads this, its a great lens for astro in my opinion, but the claims made for it at F1.4 are misleading at best. Stop it down a bit and the results are stunning.

Dustin, I think I'll be in the minority here, but please consider going back to your grey wall for resolution testing. The test chart you made up for this review was very poor - and underexposed on the video. I can't see what you're describing verbally where I could before. Really, this feels like a dealbreaker. Also, what's with the sponsorship? Can you address this? I've been looking to your reviews (and pointing others to your website and KZbin site) for quite awhile now but I'm sorry, if this is just a commercial endeavour for you I'm no longer interested. But SERIOUSLY that chart with the money stuck onto it failed completely in this review. Honest.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 4 жыл бұрын
Stephen, interesting feedback, as I've had very positive feedback on the test chart. Far more votes to continue with this approach than with the wall test. I can understand your personal frustration, but I try to take the consensus of my audience feedback along with my personal observation. I'm able to standardize my testing better with the chart (repeatable lighting and conditions) and thus do more comparison to other lenses. As for the sponsorship; I do a sponsored post on a rare occasion, but yes, I am definitely trying to earn a living from this. And with all due respect, you get the benefit of all my work at no personal cost, as do hundreds of thousands of other people. Condemning me for trying to provide for my family and better my future through my honest work seems a little, well...small.

Stephen, you are completely within your rights to subscribe or unsubscribe, but if you think your remarks were not personal, I think you may need to review them. "...if this is just a commercial endeavour for you I'm no longer interested." "...it failed completely." "this feels like a dealbreaker." "...what's with the sponsorship."
