Flare with character can be fun, but I appreciate that this lens minimizes it. Flare can be added in Post, or we can adapt a vintage lens that has the character we need.

I just got the 50mm 1.2 GM last Friday. Then saw about the 1.4 haha 😄. Still under return window, so not sure if I want to keep it or go for the 1.4 and use the money saved for a trip instead. Hard choices. The 1.2 is a great lens so far and weight doesn't bother me at all (works fine on gimbal too). It's really just about the price difference and if 1.2 is worth the extra $

how better is the 1.2 compared to the 1.4 if you where to estimate especially for gimbal work. I really don't mind the extra weight but saving 700 dollars sounds good to me lol! but if its worth the extra .2 stop ill buy it

@SllLVIIUS Can't say if it is worth the extra 700. Difference wouldn't be noticeable to most people. No regrets on purchasing it though. Amazing lens and works perfectly on my DJI RS3 also. Weight doesn't really bother me.

Lenstip tested this lens on their optical bench. Sharpest Sony lens yet, tack sharp from max aperture, reaching an amazing 91 lpmm by f/2.8 (The FE 35 f/1.4 reaches 80 lpmm peak resolution for comparison). Well done, Sony.

Considering EU prices, I got the 1.2 on Black Weekend with Sony cashback for cheaper than the MSRP of this 1.4 GM. Is the extra half stop of light worth the weight and size? According to my calculations - not really. But if I am forced to take a bright prime with me over my compact and versatile Sigma 28-70 DG DN zoom lens, it'd better be much brighter than 2.8.

This is just an FYI, OK? There is also an other 50mm e-mount lense, that you should consider and that is the Samyang 50mm 1.4 FE II. It's smaller than the new Sony GM 1.4 and lighter. it's aldo much less expensive. By the way, it's razor sharp. Here's the specs: weight: 419g. 80mmwide and 90mm long. The filter is 71mm. The cost is $589.00 list price...Not too shabby! Lastly, don't forget about the Sony 55mm 1.8. It's only 280grams, 70mm long and 64mm wide. Even if it's a little "long in the tooth" it's a razor sharp optic. You can pick up a used one for $550.00.

I’m confused too! I’ve already got the 1.2 but if I was in the market for a 50mm I’d sure as shiz buy this over the 1.2! I wonder why Sony have released this? Surely it’ll absolutely kill the 1.2 sales, no?

hello Pierre, it seems that BBF with AFON button has less success than in the past (see mark galler, taylor jackson, jason vong,...) because you could loose some features of the cameras doing that and also there are other methods achieving same results. One method seems to be setting AFON to MF and then you have also the benfits of MF with focus peaking, zoom, manual adjustments,... what do you think with respect to switching to AF-S by simply stop pressing afon in BBF AF-C ? jason Vong seems to use that in video too making AF on a building and switching to MF so the obstacles are not considered when he moves the camera (flowers, pole,...).

I have the 1.2 and absolutely love it! My guess is the 1.4 is for pros (or amateurs with money) that simply don’t need the 1.2 quality and would rather save some money since it’s prob very negligible, but if you want the absolutely best tho & have the money, I’d go 1.2 currently. 😉 All the GM Glass with Sony are very nice!

Yet another great video 👏 . May I just ask you (and fellow subscribers) a question please? I have the A7RV and I am looking at the 50mm f1.4 GM and the f1.2 GM. Having watched a number of reviews I'm confused. Would you say that both lenses would be equally as sharp on the A7RV? I have found a deal where the 1.2 is only £200 more than the 1.4......

Ask yourself this: can you handle the weight and cost of the f/1.2, and can you take full advantage of the wider aperture? I would be inclined to go with the f/1.4. It has outstanding price and performance.

IMO the 1.2 has more character, better boka and is plenty sharp (these days I’m liking subtle diffusion filters!)

Get a zoom first. Sony 70-200 GM ii, Sony 20-70, Tamron 35-150 are all versatile choices.

Sorry ... You are in a difficult place. When you say sport and portrait I would lean toward 50 or 85. When you say cars and street I would lean toward 35. But some people use 50 all the time. Depends on your eyes.

He’s got his Zebra setting turned on, which helps him know to adjust the exposure so as not to blow out the highlights.

nice review. What do you think aboutthe sony 50mm F/1.8 compared to that F/1.4 ? personnally i have 24-70gm2 2.8 and it covers 50mm at 2.8. I often think 50mm is a little too narrow but looking your pictures it seems not. My preference remains for 35mm, in my case sony 35mm F/1.8 with the possibility to use crop mode at 52mm on a7iv. and i have also sony 85mm F/1.8. But at final 95% of the time i use 24-70 2.8.

i am using 85mm and still don’t feel comfortable taking a stranger picture. i have to pretend to take a picture of something else and steal a shot. but it doesn’t turn good always because i wasn’t really composing.

I would say 50mm may be not the most comfortable to shoot. But it does look good as end product. One my really great looking photo in 2016 was taken by my friend with 50mm and damn photo looked sweet then i did same to other people and they also looked damn well i mean nice 😂 though 35 is my more ‘comfortabel’ king of fl so i like it a bit more but 50mm is really not bad it fights with 20mm cause that one is also kinda in betweener of 12-16 and 35 where its not super wide but also a bit harder to frame but framabble

Customers can't tell the difference between an expensive G Master and a VERY EXPENSIVE GMASTER, so that extra $700 isn't worth it, and it's light and small, so I carry it with me everywhere because I love taking pictures of everything. Also, don't lie to yourselves we all know you will use it at F2 most of the time because 1.2 and 1.4 is too much in most situations

Awesome insight as always..for some photographers at this point..its all about that lower f-stop..1.2>1.4..im sure this 1.4 is amazing like its "bigger sibling" the 1.2..and of course now you are paying for the price difference..is around $700 USD worth it for a 1.2 or 1.4..like I said at this point for some photographers..its just clout and bragging rights that "I paid more than you" for a 1.2..haha at the end of the day our clients can't even tell and even some photographers can't even tell what image is what..1.2 or 1.4 image..its weird that Sony still chose to make this 1.4 GMlens? seems like there is no need for it when you have that 1.2?..now you're putting the lens against each other for sales?..when you could have just made customers not have the ability to choose and make them choose the only one 50 GM 1.2..lol I am just waiting for that 85 1.2 GM!! haha im sure it will be around the same design as that 50 1.2 GM..slightly smaller and lightweight would be perfect..
