The One - Sony Alpha 1. The new Sony mirrorless fullframe flagship! Let's see whether its designation as "The One" and its price tag are well deserved. I will compare the Sony A1 with the A7S III in video mode and the Sony A9 II in photo mode. Let's see if the One can tame the video beast and outrun the speed demon.

Hey there! Thanks to cogmission I was informed about a mistake I made regarding flash sync speeds. I switched that up, sorry. Here it goes: A1. Mechanical shutter: 1/400th, 1/500th APS-C. Electronic shutter 1/200th. A9 II. Mechanical shutter: 1/250th. No sync with electronic shutter. Best regards to cogmission!

Hi! I love it when an enlightened person can admit mistakes - it's no big deal, so why not? There's a LOT of numbers to memorize! :-) (I have just been living for the A1 for 2 months - crazily devouring all content about it I can! Not owning it, just craving it!) Thanks so much for your hard work (and extraordinary character)! Subscribed!

Great video Mark10!!! Btw, EVERYBODY is overlooking the fact that the A1 sensor is not just a 'stacked' CMOS sensor like the A9/A9II, but a STACKED BSI (Back-side illuminated) SENSOR(!!!), which is truly a crowning achievement: combining the best of speed and dynamic range into a single unit, which for a long time just wasn't possible: you either had to go with speed and sacrifice some DR (a9II), or get great DR and image at the cost of speed (A7RIV)... truly amazing!!

To date, this is still the best, hands down review of any system components. All facts, no fluff, just concise info with simple, clear practical examples. KEEP MAKING GREAT CONTENT. This video recently lead me to compare all three in person, and purchase the A1. I'd been a Canon 5d2,3,4/1dxii user for over a decade. The following points were deciding factors. A1- The viewfinder, focus, file size and physical handling surpass any other stills body by a factor of two. Literally. A1- The "8K capability" is a phrase that editors and compositors love, clients brag about, and provides the ability to shoot slightly wider, knowing you can punch in or recompose in post. It's like shooting with a b-camera on a tighter lens at all times, which is incredible. A1- The ability to carry one body for both commercial production level video and stills is huge. My backup is a ZVE10, and I've only used it for a bit of B-roll, or when the A1 was at risk of physical damage from falling off a rig or similar. A7Siii- Price. At $4500 here in Canada, you can buy two, or one with $4000 in extra glass, but the requirement to have a designated 30MP stills body was prohibitive A9ii- Price. They're on the used market at $3400 CDN, but the viewfinder is on par with older mirrorless cameras in the $600 range, which kills it, imho. The requirement to have a designated video body, with all the capabilities of the A7sii or iii, was again, illogical. At the end of the day, the combination of the video and stills capabilities won out, and I went for the A1 with a ZEV10 backup, and have now ordered a second. The camera paid for itself within the first three jobs it was used on, without a doubt. (Of note, if you can fined a used Leica Summicron 50mm and a good adaptor, I'm telling you its like having a 100mp Hassleblad that shoots video like a Sony cinema camera).

The best review I've ever watched, my man! I love the format. I usually stay away from reviews that compare 3 products because I find them not as comprehensive and can't effectively compare the 3 different sets of features. Your review was a first. Comparing the A7sIII with the A1 was so good, anything you said about the A9II was so clear and you didn't have to mentions the a7SII anymore! Great work! I'm subscribed :)

Great job on that review, nicely structured, professional presentation (technically & how everything was presented) and making the right comparisons (Sony A7s iii and Sony A9 ii which the camera both tops and somewhat combines, you could also compare it to the A7R iv for detail but that has been covered in some other videos and technically in terms of AF, video etc it's not needed). One thing which is hard to film but would be vital to this review is at having at least one real world sample of a situation which benefits/requires/shows the difference of 120AF/AE calculations. The only person having showed that on youtube so far is Mark Galer. The comparisons in video where really nice, these real world usage comparisons are vital though since a few minutes of this video are spec comparisons which are ready available on the official Sony website. Overally well done video though.

Anyone having issues with the A1 screen EVF going black at the worst times? Every so often I put my face up to the viewfinder and the screen is black. It's a known issue with some birders too. I lost a god damn home run at a baseball game over this, pretty pissed lol! Even assigning the toggle switch between viewfinder/monitor doesn't work, haven't found a workaround yet.

... a1: oversampling 4K footage is only available in crop mode, otherwise in FF it‘s with pixel bining. And in 8K you will see a significant rolling shutter. But you get an external oversampled 4K signal with the Ninja V (watch Gerrald Undone‘s video).

4K FF on A1 is basically the same like A7 SIII, very hard to find some differences. Super35 mode is sharper and with more detail. Rolling shutter in 8K mode is still very good, much better than old FF A7 III for example.

Thank you Mark for your review one question though; regarding recording video in APSc mode in both the A1 and A7 S iii, no one is talking much in detail about that. Maybe it's possible on the A1 because of the high MP, but what about the quality, for both cameras is 4k detail resolution still possible? please elaborate
@Mark10ProVideo
@Mark10ProVideo 3 жыл бұрын
The SIII has no 4k APS-C crop mode, like the A7III. Not enough resolution. A1 has a crop mode, but I did not have the time to test it and see how good the quality is. I assume there will be a lot of processing applied to the signal to go from 8k resolution down to a 4k crop resolution. I would assume that the 4k quality without crop is better than the 4k quality with APS-C crop. Just a guess though.

A1 you have reversed... 1/250 with ES (No other camera can do that) AND 1/400 (1/500 APS-C mode) Only with mechanical Shutter and again, no other of the competition can do that.. The A1 is better in low light for ISO's 4000-10,000 than the A7sIII as its second native ISO is 4000. The A7sIII native ISO's are 640/12800. So for ISO's 10,000 the A7sIII is gonna be the winner. What this means in the real world? For MAX DR and cleanest image you always want to shoot at the base ISO's. A1 for video is 800/4000 and A7sIII is 640/12800. So shooting in lower lights means you get a cleaner image on the A7sIII if you shoot at 12800 vs ISO 3200 which means you need to use ND filters inside (but it also means you can use lower power light sources. I have the FX-3 and the A1. I had the A1 first as I mainly do stills and play with video. The video on A1 is excellent but I've used many cine cameras for video and find the shooting experience for video more enjoyable on the FX-3 because its geared towards video and all settings inputed will be for video shooting (this would be different on the A7sIII since it has a similar layout to the Alpha bodies (hybrid setup).
