This camera is incredibly capable, on so many levels. Battery life is actually really good. It hasn't overheated once for me. Just take a few extra batteries. No big deal. For the money, I doubt you could do better, but at the end of the day, most of these cameras are pretty incredible. 4k 24/30with no significant crop, great autofocus in 1080 and 4k, which is awesomeness, great "improved" color, great image quality, plenty of lens options, flip up screen, (get a cage or a $10 attachment to put it on the side, issue fixed), decent internal mic, (but who uses the internal mic anyway, ever?_), tons of settings options for pretty much any scenario you want to shoot in, no limit on recording time, etc, etc... for a $900 body? $1500 and you can have 2 amazing lenses, a mic, a cage, C'mon people... Pretty damn good.

Hey, I want to upgrade by kit lens of sony a6400. I am looking for a nice prime lens. So which one I should go for sony 35mm f1.8 or sigma 30mm f1.4. Horrible rolling shutter and flip up screen made me change my mind on getting this. I use a audio receiver in my cameras and that just don’t work with the screen going up.

As a Sony Alpha Fanboy, this camera is nothing more than a stop gap in the lineup. I sold my A6500 to help finance my A7III and will never go back to APSC, Even if it gets a flip screen. I just hot Shoe my phone to monitor the feed. So simple.

OutspokenTheMC You di, but the camera autofocuses fine, and your face is pretty much the biggest, closest object in the center of the frame, so it’s not a problem (I’ve tried with the Sony 24mm f/1.4)

@@dweberss yeah you're correct. But you also get superior quality. For some image stabilization do the 16-50 (I think that's what its called). Or just get a gimble with the extra cash you save from not getting the a6500.

Good point about how a mic will block the flip up screen. For me, it doesn't matter as I don't shoot video. I use the A6000 and don't see a great need for me to upgrade for what I use the camera for.

This is for potential buyers for the Sony A6400. This is a 5 month post review. I love shooting videos and photography. This camera will do both perfectly. I got a lot of paid clients with this camera and I am grateful for this machine. Its light and pretty durable. It is still holding up to this day. The flip-up screen is soo amazing. So worth it. The new AI detection is also very reliable and is also killer in low light settings. Which is not a surprise. So far the only bad thing I can say about this machine is that IBIS is not present. I recommend if you already have a A6500, do not upgrade. But this camera is a perfect secondary camera. It is also a good camera if you are new to the camera game :)

Sony you were so close! We needed a flip-out screen (not flip-up), IBIS, and better batteries (like on the a7iii). The new fast focus is great, 120fps at 1080p and great 4k is a win, but I wanted zero excuses not to get this camera like the a7iii; being on the fence doesn't cut it. Fingers crossed for a better version soon, similar to the a6300 jump to a6500, but I doubt those important features will be coming to the mirrorless line for Sony anytime soon.

Sony marketing team is genius. They target with this camera the large group that wants to vlog on the go for KZbin and that also likes to take great photos for Instagram. To me it's an upgraded Sony A5100. Sony targeting all kind of niches here my friend

I don’t think cheap full frame will totally kill off aps-c. That sensor size is in a sweet spot for image quality and portability. This is perfect for people who want a high-end travel camera. Also, although I am not one of those people, some people apparently prefer shooting cropped for wildlife, so I imagine the wildlife market will always want some option there. What I bet will happen is that cheap full frame will tighten the aps-c market and some manufacturers will be squeezed out, which will narrow consumers’ options for aps-c systems.

High end APSC still on the cards. Sony have made this for a 6000-6300 replacement and the A7000 DSLR style camera to replace the A6500. That will have 26mp, 4k 60p, Z battery and IBIS.

Agree with Jared I don't see much effort going into APS-C cameras (with the exception of Fuji), a few budget FF models could cause real problems. APS-C has a future but only with a much more exciting price point, or maybe the odd higher end body for nature/wildlife shooters. Seems 35mm has made a serious comeback, it's also much more affordable second hand.
