Is the Sony a6600 worth buying over the Sony a6400? Is the a6400 still worth it in 2019 and heading into 2020 as a viable APS-C camera for professionals? Do I regret purchasing the a6400? These two Sony cameras are very capable, but which one is the better investment?

Welp, I bought the A6400 based on your video! I am a beginner and was actually looking at the A6600. After looking at the specs. and watching videos and reading reviews I decided to go with the A6400 with the 18-135 kit lens. You and others here on youtube bring up some pretty good points. I will be using this mainly for photography and overall feel happy with my purchase. Thank you and keep the good work!!!

@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
That is a great question because honestly the A7iii was my next investment. I still have my eye on it, but "secretly" waiting for that unicorn to pop up, hopefully this year. The recording limit was something that held me back on the purchase. I was able to extend it on the a6500, but couldn't on the A7iii. I do quite a bit of recording over 30 minutes... But honestly it's still a very capable camera with a very aggressive price point. What are you currently filming with, or interested in picking up?

I’m currently using the gh5. I had the a7iii and loved it however I had to let it go because it didn’t fit into my current work flow. I’m planning on getting the a7iii again but from watching your video and a couple of other Chanel’s the a6400 is a compelling option.

@@jl1136 I think it really comes down to wanting/needing full frame... Well that's obvious I suppose. The a6400 checks so many boxes and a couple more than the A7iii. Great video! I enjoy these kind of videos more as it seems to encourage a potential purchaser to consider their options carefully and think about exactly what they want from a new camera/lens rather than going along with the typical marketing speel that "newer is automatically better". As for me, currently I'm a Sony a-mount user with an a68. I've been looking at potential "upgrades" which are available to me; these include the a77-II (most likely this is the last aps-c a-mount DSLT), the a6400, a6500 (discontinued now but has quite a price drop and still very capable) and the a6600. If going the e-mount route, I'll be using my existing a-mount lenses via an adapter (Sony LAEA-3 most likely) but the IBIS on the a6500 and a6600 should still work with those lenses? Hopefully... Anyway its a tough choice still I think but I really enjoyed your video anyway. Keep up the great work. :)
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
If for some reason the OSS (if your lens has this) doesn't function, the IBIS should be taken care of the sensor of the camera. The only thing I don't have experience with is how the AF will work with those adapters. I've heard some haven't had issues with the native AF lenses, but I'd just research that my friend. Totally understandable wanting to use those lenses since you've already made that investment 👍 Appreciate the feedback. Just trying to help as many as I can make that buying decision.

@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, you're looking at multiple setups here. You're going to get the best results (in my opinion) with prime lenses like the Sigma 16mm or 30mm for photography. Those will give you a full-frame equivalent to a 24mm and close to 50mm, which is what I would be shooting for photo, especially portraits. Shooting sports is a whole different scenario. You need something fast that can keep up, however you'll also likely need to go with a Zoom like the Sony 18-135 (based on your budget). The focal length on this will likely net you some softer results around the edges as you zoom in, which unfortunately would be expected as this is classified as a "beginner" lens. Not to mention the variable aperture from 3.5-5.6...that'll also be a factor when it comes to your lighting. If it were me, just starting out I would assess what I'm going to be shooting the most...not everything I want to shoot, but what is my primary use case. Camera bodies are certainly important, but the glass you put on them is even more important and the biggest investment you'll make over the years. I'm mostly into video, but if I just had to pick one lens for both video and photo, and at around your budget, the Sony 18-105 hands down. I've taken great photos with it, and the video output is awesome as well. The constant f4 aperture is a win over the 18-135 in my book. I know this might not be the exact info you're wanting, but just giving you more questions to ask as far as your top priorities and needs. I've just never been able to get the same results out of zooms as I do with primes when it comes to photography. I'd much prefer switching out a trio of lenses like the Sigma 16, 30, and 56 to get those sharp images...It's a little extra work, but will net you better results.

It’s still a pretty popular camera, but with the Sony a7c now launched as the full frame option for a reasonable bump in price, I think it’s definitely getting folks to think about it a bit more in terms of what they need now vs. what they need in the future. The full frame option is nice, but it’s obviously more expensive as well as the lenses typically being more expensive. The IBIS isn’t great, but what it will do if offer some help with micro jitters that occur handheld.

Like the way you analyse this. I'm on G80, and the autofocus is just pathetic, i can't use my new ronin SC with it because on every shots the AF is just doing shit ... i'm looking for a camera with a nice AF, but i've seen videos where the Ronin SC coupled with the a6400, the background is really shaky ... certainly because of the absence of IBIS ... so my question is ... waiting november and invest in a a6600 with IBIS to use it with gimbal ? What do you think about the AF of the A6400 on a gimbal ? (I'm frensh, sorry for my aproximative english ... ahah)
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
I have a lot of experience with the a6400 on a gimbal with an unstabilized lens and it is fine. The issue is that you really need to make sure the gimbal/camera are balanced properly. Micro jitters (shake) can occur if the motors are fighting the balance. An OSS lens would help with much of this however. In my opinion I think having an OSS lens is better than the IBIS alone... For video. Sony's auto focus is amazing, but the built in IBIS... Not so much. And besides even with the 6600, you'd still want a gimbal for some of your work.

I am worring about battery life on a6400. How much does it last? Also battery grip woth extra battery is cool option but noone is talking about it..
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
So here's what I'd say about battery life, specifically how long it lasts (based on my workflow): I'm more run and gun with my workflow than I am in the studio. So that means the camera gets turned on and off a lot, or is also just left on in a standby mode. From my experience of doing the 6400 vs 6500 videos, I can safely say that the upgrade in chipset does give about 15-20+% increase in battery life overall. That being said I'd usually have about five to six FW-50 batteries for a day of filming like this on the a6500, whereas three to four of the same batteries usually get me through that type of filming on the 6400. For long interviews or studio filming, I use the iFootage, which I did a video on here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGrJipqZnJ2LjdE Just plugging in an external battery pack doesn't really give you a charge you're looking for and in most of my cases it just makes it so the battery drains slower, but it still drains...However the iFootage doesn't work like that. As far as the battery grip, I think that these can be helpful, but the reason I didn't go with one is that it does increase the footprint of the camera, which adds weight, I also use a cage to protect the camera, and I also like to be able to pop it on a gimbal and not have to make too many adjustments in the balance and also having it hit the motors of the gimbal since the footprint is bigger. But simply put, I don't have an "exact" time because I rarely just turn it on and leave it, which many videos may have that set up with a timer to show you...I'm just on the move too much. But would I like having that Z battery and potentially get through a day of filming with one, maybe two batteries? Honestly, yes.

So what would ya recommend me getting for a in house and on top of a roof recording being more outdoor stuff . ??
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
I believe the recommendation for the GoPro is likely due to you (and the camera) being on the roof, which is the safe bet. I would have a hard time recommending a DSLR or mirrorless camera if that would be your primary, unless you had someone dedicated as your camera person. A question however, what kind of phone do you have? Now, to build on the GoPro, you can definitely vlog on it. If you're not too worried about dynamic range, which is really being able to adjust your lens settings to get various types of shoots (that's an oversimplification), then I'd say yep, you got that covered. For getting up on a roof, the GoPro is lightweight, you can strap it to your chest, wrist, hat/head, or you could get something like this to clamp it to nearby objects: amzn.to/34pNC34 Now, if going with the GoPro and you're out in the sun, which I assume is likely to always be the case, then you're going to want to invest in something like these: amzn.to/3cddsu1 Think of them as sunglasses for your camera. You can't really adjust your GoPro camera settings like you can with a DSLR or mirrorless setup where you can dial your shutter speed, etc. to adjust for exposure. And, if you keep everything on auto, which would be okay, but you'll find that you'll have various changes in your lighting when you bring that footage into post production. Not to mention that those "sunglasses" will help with the colors that come out of the camera. GoPros are known (in the GoPro color profile) to really saturate the image especially when things get really blown out with your lighting. So, as much as I'd recommend any of these Sony cameras, I'm not sure you'd be happy lugging that up there and worrying about it being damaged. And I get that you'd like to just have a one and done situation here, I'm sure that would be easier on the budget. Think of it as a tool my friend. When I'm building something, I tend to have a hammer and a mallet, multiple screw drivers, a drill driver and/or a hammer drill, a circular saw and a miter saw...which I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, first hand. Just trying to help. Anyway, what about your phone, what do you have?

I am "jumping" from amateur to pro during this year, I was thinking of a Sony a6400 as a B camera that I will be using and then buy a Sony full frame (probably the a7iii) for the next blackfriday. My partner would be using the Sony a6400 then and I would get the full frame. What do you think of this? My main concern is lenses, to me the ideal would be buying lenses for the a6400 that I could use later for the a7iii... I am still an amateur! but I am studying so much and investing just because I truly love it. So far I have been using my mother's old Nikon DSLR. I loved the video! thanks a million
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
Happy to help. So, I think you're following a reasonable path of the a6400 and something like the A7iii, and specifically just talking about the color science and same picture profiles. It will help greatly with color correction in post if you're working with the same picture profiles and/or color science, especially when starting out. The A7iii will likely have a successor this year, so it'll definitely come down in price even further, and of course give you something else to think about when it comes to buying the successor or saving some money with the A7iii. Lenses are definitely another story. Yes, APS-C lenses can go on full-frame as well as full-frame on APS-C, however you want to make sure you're getting the most out of that full-frame. Putting an APS-C lens on the A7iii works, but you'll really want to be in that crop mode function, which is built into the camera...essentially there's an APS-C mode in the A7iii. And, if you put full-frame glass on the a6400 just remember the crop factor, so putting a full-frame 85mm (which I personally own) will give you something like 127mm full-frame equivalent. Now, moving back to the A7iii I would certainly be concerned that you're not getting the full benefits of that camera if you're not investing in some full frame glass. Lenses are the real investment. The camera bodies are important, but the lenses can transfer to any new or old (as long as they're e-mount) camera bodies, so just keep that in mind. Personally I would think about maybe starting with the Sony 18-105 for the a6400 if you're more video centric. This was my first lens purchase and still use it today. For the full-frame you could also start with a zoom, something from either Tamron or Sigma to save a little money, but also get some pretty good value too. Would you be primarily video vs photo, or the other way around? And, if photo, what do you think you'd primarily be shooting?

And I've also started to see used A7riii bodies for under 1800 USD, which I think is a bargain for what you get. Anyway, the a6400 is great, but I would recommend using a stabilized lens, which the 500 cost savings could really help. What are you currently filming with?

Thanks for this. Totally affirmed my decision to go with the 6400. I have a YT channel focusing on tech so my camera will mostly be in a tri-pod and movement will be panning from the fluid mount more than anything. Glad I saved the cash. I'll try to use OSS lenses when out and about, but you've sold me on that Sigma 16/1.4 for wide angle shots (already watched the other video). @@KevinRossRN Will do! Already have the camera with the 16-50 kit lens and also bought the Sony 35mm/1.8, and this week I've been researching optimal settings and focus tips and stuff. Really want to hone the craft and learn to do pull focus and other things. Information is great to give, but if I can combo it with a stellar presentation then all the better. So far I've found the 16-50 gives me a wider shot so I can fit in with something big like a PC case, while the 35 allows for better bokeh and close-up goodness. I'm hoping that sigma 16mm will allow for both wide and bokeh and it sounds like it will, so time to save.

Yeah, the 16-50 is a pretty good kit lens to start with, but when you get that Sigma it's just going to blow you away. Not to mention that you can zoom in 1.5x with it. I did a video on that...very easy to do and you don't lose any detail when filming in 4K.

My gimbal cam is an a5100. I control it with a cellphone app, Camoodoo. I can even touch focus with the app. I only shoot 1080p and always record sound to a Tascam recorder. The upgrade path for me would probably be the a6400. I think the weather-sealed magnesium body would be an advantage here in Vietnam. I really have to be careful with my a5100. Overall I think the a6400 is a home-run. I am always using tripods, monopods and gimbals, so the a6500 wouldn't offer much to me for the big price difference. Good common sense review and comparison. I definitely recommend the a6400, and yes for sports photos...a question to you would be what is a comfortable budget? I have the Sony 18-105 OSS (stabilized) lens amzn.to/2oLCZHd and use it for my kids soccer games...There's also the Sony 18-135 (paired with the a6400: amzn.to/2neQ6Ai) that could work...these are what I would consider "budget friendly" zoom lenses. I can add some other options in there if you're looking for a bit more "pro" level...with a "pro" level price of course. I'll offer up a couple of options with a couple of different price ranges. And yes, hard to find the lens that can do it all, but rather offering the most bang. Depending on how much macro you're doing I would look at the Sony 90mm: amzn.to/336BdPH crazy sharp and versatile when it comes to macro. You can obviously do some portraiture, but this may not be as fast as you'd like for that use. It's full frame, so you're looking at an equivalent focal length of about 135mm Two Macro runner ups would be the Sony 30mm: amzn.to/30ST8Id and another would be the Sigma 70mm: amzn.to/2LPOUgg You'd want to be locked off on these shots due to the lack of OSS. Sports, landscape, portraits (these are full frame so just account for a 1.5 crop factor): Sony 24-105: amzn.to/35aXNsq Sony 24-70: amzn.to/2AMCdwv Sony 85mm: amzn.to/2LTtG0M This is the one that I personally use on my 6400 and 6500. It's a crop factor/focal length of 127mm. My kids play soccer, so fast moving. It's a very fast prime lens. Also it's 1.8 aperture and also great for indoor. I'm sure you'll want to do a little research, but see what you think. I'm sure I could keep going ;)

@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
No worries...I figured as much. So, not sure what your skill level is, but many will say it all depends on the filmmaker/photographer. The kit lens is $100USD with the camera, which honestly is a bargain, but I also have to admit I don't normally throw it in my bag and only use it for comparison videos since I do have other lenses. I will however be doing a cinematic review of the kit lens paired with the a6400...hopefully coming soon. But to answer your question directly, if you have the budget (if it doesn't break the bank) I would say upgrading your lens will definitely improve your opportunities to get that cinematic footage. These cameras are very capable, but the glass you put on them can level up your image quality...but again as long as you know how to use it. The best way to learn is to just keep doing it, making mistakes, learning, and repeating. The 16-50mm lens will not be as sharp as other lenses, but in my opinion everything in your footage doesn't need to be "tack" sharp. It also has a variable aperture, so when you Zoom in on the lens you have to account for any ISO/lighting/exposure changes that may occur in video, so if you start wide at 16mm it'll be open to f3.5, but as you zoom in it'll be f5.6, which may mess with your footage a bit and depends on whether you're shooting manual or auto. This may be a long answer, but just wanted to give you my two cents here. You can certainly get some good footage with it, but you will realize that once you upgrade you will be able to push that lens and your camera quite a bit further for what you want.

@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
That's awesome you're considering the switch. The a6400 + OSS lens + gimbal will definitely be more stabilized than the a6600 without a gimbal...that would actually be the case for most cameras however. The gimbal is going to offer you quite a bit of stabilization already...it's just in how you use it. Like, don't run down the street heavy footed and expect to see this buttery smooth footage. There will still be shake in there. But like I said, even with the a6600 having IBIS in it, if you really want to stabilize it even more, a gimbal would be the go to choice here. The a6400 paired with just a gimbal alone and compared to the a6600 with a gimbal would be pretty close, and easily stabilized further in post production. The quick example of me panning through the living area into that kitchen was done on the a6400, the 16mm (not stabilized), and a gimbal...and I didn't add in any extra stabilization in post. The OSS lens will offer stabilization for pitch and yaw, which are really the moves you'll be performing quite a bit on a gimbal, so just a little added bonus of stabilization. If I didn't answer your question, just let me know, but yes, the money you'll save can be spent on your glass and a gimbal.

Like I said before, the 6600 with IBIS would allow you to have non-stabilized lenses, however honestly, the IBIS isn't a game changer in the Sony cameras. The autofocus however is amazing in both cameras. So, are you not as concerned about going wider than 10mm?

Here’s what I will say. Overall you could put that savings into a stabilized lens, however I will say that the IBIS is nice to take out those microjitters when doing handheld, but for general walking around it’s harder to appreciate that IBIS. However on the flip side of spending 300 more, having the IBIS would also allow you to pick up (cheaper) non-stabilized lenses.

So what I will say is that the 6600 will have an advantage with the built in IBIS when it comes to handheld shots, and specifically micro jitters. It’s not the best IBIS, however those minor shakes that occur with close up shorts or even zoomed out shots will benefit from those small movements. Now, walking around hand held is another story. Also, with IBIS it would allow you to purchase less expensive non-stabilized lenses. Although stabilized lenses do help quite a bit. Also it does seem that the 6600 has dropped in price since this video. Can you afford the 6600?

Well you’ll never get gimbal quality without a gimbal, so if you want really buttery smooth footage, then a gimbal is the way to go. The 18-135 is a decent lens. It’s better for photos, but it is still a decent video lens. The 6600 and the 6400 would look fairly similar as far as the output of they’re both on a gimbal. I will say as long as you’re fine setting up a gimbal for many of your shoots, then that’s fine. It can get cumbersome at times. The stabilized lenses are really helpful and the 18-135 is stabilized, so you’ll find yourself likely not needing a gimbal for many of your handheld shots.

Now in 2023, I'm very glad that I bought the 6600. There two major reasons why I am glad. One, battery life, I hardly ever run out of battery in a day. Frequently it last me 2 days. Two, IBIS, with so many great lens coming out that has no image stabilization that is better priced. And as a bonus, the grip is so much better than any of the A6 series.

I can't deal with the battery on the 6400, I have a 6300 and battery life has always been issue, i know the 6400 is supposed to be 15 percent more efficient, still not enough, that is why I would go with the 6600, you can also share batteries if you ever decide to pick up a a7
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, battery life is definitely going to be better on the 6600, and yes, a battery you can swap with the A7 series. I will also say that even though the Sony OEM batteries are 1080mAh rating, they'll still hold a charge longer than the third party ones that have a higher mAh rating... Are you considering the 6600 for your next purchase?

My problem right now, deciding between the a6400 or the a6600. The struggle is real😂. Question, is the IBIS mainly used for videos or does it aid in photography as well?
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
IBIS, especially Sony's IBIS (because it's not the greatest), is better utilized in photography. You certainly want your video stable, of course, but there are so many ways to stabilize handheld video even without a stabilized lens. The improved battery life would be nice, and I know would have been considered for the a6400 if not for the slated release of the a6500 successor....Gotta hold something back for that extra $500USD. Still no regrets on my a6400 purchase. I just filmed with it today doing another review of the a6400 paired with the Sigma 16mm. It's a little beast of a camera. What are you currently using?

All good points but the battery life on the 6400 is terrible. As a photographer, IBIS is very important as you mentioned. If you're a videographer the headphone jack and eye auto focus in video is a big addition. So in conclusion, I think the things I mentioned justifies purchasing the A6600. If you already have the 6400 like yourself then sticking with it makes sense.

The stabilization test you did was inaccurate. The way it should've been done was, both cameras with a stabilized lens against each other, and then bot cameras without a stabilized lens against each other, that way people can actually make an informed decision. I don't know if paring a stabilized lens with the stabilized body works better than with just the stabilized lens. What I do know is having a stabilized body without a stabilized lens works better than no stabilization at all, but other people should also see that.

Appreciate the feedback. I actually did another video using the 6400 and 6500, but did add the kit lens and the 18-105 on them... Both OSS. The footage was a bit blown out as I was filming in the middle of the day. Anyway, I think the OSS in the lens works better than just the straight IBIS for video. 1. IBIS is NOT GOOD in the long run. The lube used for the axis to stabilize the sensor will eventually spill on the shutter within the camera which is a potential risk to shortening its lifespan. 2. OSS is far more stable than IBIS 3. a6600 excels in low light among all the aps-c series from sony but one of the worst when it comes to color depth and dynamic range. 4. For its price point, I will rather go for an a7iii. a6600 is just a marketing pun for sony.

@@cefgil3905 Sony will drop that A7siii, likely in April, according to the rumors and it'll be north of 3,000 USD... The A7iii is currently at a 200 discount, and will likely be closer to 1,500 soon with an impending A7iv release. The a6600 will hover around 1,100 and 6400 likely 799...my theories anyway. The A7iii is also full frame compared to APS-C (crop sensor) of the 6400 AND 6600. Full frame has some advantages, although lenses could be a bit more vs. the lenses with APS-C.
