Hi Jason - This is going to be a little long. First of all I am going to commend you greatly for doing so many of the right things in this video. So many people miss the mark and you hit the bullseye in every aspect of what a review should be. THANK YOU!!! 1. You got to the point quickly and almost instantly started sharing footage. Your excitement shines through. 2. You really avoided tech speak and drew meaningful comparisons. 3. You didn't force act and that made you more genuine. 4. You clearly know this isn't about set or studios or how much bokeh and sparkly lights are in your background, 5. I understood the product a LOT more after this video than I did watching a dozen other YT videos. After watching dozens and dozens, maybe hundreds, of camera review videos, AND because I've been doing a different kind of review for on KZbin for 15 years, I can share the following for others in the hope you will try hard to emulate Jason: 1. It's not about you, it's about the product and the story you tell, despite what the algorithm tells you. Show the product IN ACTION quickly. People know when you're trying to sucker them into 20 minutes of viewing. 30 minutes of commentary without actually showing REAL footage of the camera sucks and makes me wish there was a block button on YT. 2. Put the product through its paces. Photo's, videos, weather, night, day - Show people it's range. 3. People don't have an endless supply of time to understand the basics about a product. Be respectful of peoples time by being straight-froward and to the point, like Jason did. 4. Work for the long-term in audience retention and subscribers by treating them intelligently and not strictly as consumers - short term clicks won't buy you long-term loyalty and audience loyalty will win every single time. 5. Be genuine and avoid the technical speak to show others how smart you are. It's alienating for most people and even condescending. You get one chance to connect with people, make it meaningful. Thanks Jason for putting together a GREAT video of a product. You restored my hope in humanity. 🙂

Love you record your review of the CII with the a6700. Been playing with my a6700 and it is dynamite for the aps-c world. Looks like the CII will be the same for the FF world. Sony is kicking it. Despite what some say, I am so glad I picked Sony to enter the digital photography/videography world.

Great hands on review! I just picked up the a6700 and am not interested in getting a full frame, but your videos are so good I had to watch. Plus, it reminded me about the highlights feature in metering mode. I need to try it out when shooting my favorite subject - waterfalls.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann Жыл бұрын
I love the highlight metering mode, and as a rule of thumb I would always try to photograph stuff in the best light possible, meaning golden hour dusk and dawn type of thing. However, when direct sun is hitting white the feature is awesome for protecting the highlights. It does hover crush the shadows at the same time, so when the lighting is harsh you might want to consider hdr photography via bracketing a few shots a various exposures. The under exposed shot should look like your using highlight metering mode for example, but you will probably need the shadow info also which is why bracing is so awesome for that purpose. I like to think of it as a tool at your discretion 👊

Hey Jay, terrific in depth review on the A7c2! Sounds like you’re ready to part with your A7IV! You won’t miss the evf, dual card slots, 1/8000 shutter speed, higher flash sync speed, true mechanical shutter, joystick, etc? I’ll admit, the A7c2 is very impressive. The one feature that I hope Sony will add to their cameras in the future is real time HDR for video/ photos similar to smart phones. In the scene where you’re in the car showing the food/ potato salad, when the potato salad is properly exposed, the background is way too dark. Vice versa, if one were to expose the background properly, the potato salad would be overexposed and clip. Would be nice if Sony cameras can do a nice real time HDR balance adjustment to get good exposure on background and foreground, in camera so we wouldn’t need to do it in post. What do you think?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann Жыл бұрын
Yeah, all great points you raised and thanks for the kind words :) I will miss the joystick, but al l the other stuff not so much... the 1/8000sec shutter is available with electronic so that is fine since the sensor readout speed is fast enough in my opinion, and I am used to using ND filters to slow the shutter speed down when using really fast lenses so not the biggest deal there for me personally. Like I said, the A74 is a more Pro oriented camera for working professionals which I am currently not doing. So for me I would rather have the "better for me" features like the stabilization, autofocus technology, and smaller size/ less weight... With that being said, I may sell my A7C get the A7C II and keep the A74 for pro work which I do want to start doing again... Plus I will then have two matching 10-bit cameras/ sensors which is terrific for multi cam shoots... As far as the exposure/ HDR for video, yes I could have been shooting in Slog3 and that would have helped a lot in that situation, but I was just shooting in regular mode letting the camera do all the processing. Slog3 gives you a significant bump in exposure latitude and that scene would have been a good example of where it would have helped. I did not want to do that for this review though and when I get the A7C II I will make a video about how-to use Slog3 for better/ higher dynamic range capture and quality... I hope that helps and all the best, Jay

So glad you made this video! Only one I could find that showed A7Cii and a6700 side by side. A few questions: 1. Any perceived difference in the viewfinders? (I think specs are the same but specs aren't always whole story) 2. For someone who is likely to mainly buy APSC lenses (travel bulk), but is interested in low light/high iso ability, would you recommend A7Cii over a6700? I like everything better about the a6700 except the sensor seemed so much noisier in low light/high iso, and I think I may value that over the extra megapixels (comparing vs your a7iv iso tests)
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann Жыл бұрын
I would not recommend buying the A7C II over the A6700 if you plan on using crop factor lenses only... I would just invest in better, faster lenses for the A6700 like the f/1.4's for example. If you do wany the better full frame sensor, then I would use it in full frame mode with a good full frame lens and the "faster" f/1.8-f/1.4 the better low light performance you will get... You can use off camera lighting, longer exposures, and fast glass to help combat low light situations and even though the A7C II sensor is better, it's still going to have noise in those insane low light situations requiring off camera lighting or a longer exposure for good results, with a fast aperture lens... I hope that helps?

Thanks for the review! The ONLY thing giving me pause is the EVF size and resolution. I'm coming from a Rebel T4i (!!) that I've been using since 2012... I'm assuming I'll be happy??
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 7 ай бұрын
It's hard to say, because I think it works fine for my needs, but it is not as good as the larger higher resolution viewfinders... You are coming from an optical viewfinder which is actually seeing thru the lens itself directly, so the EVF is way different and more like a TV. With that comes huge advantages though like "live view" which an optical viewfinder cannot do... I purchased the A7C2 silver version and also used to have a Canon 5d Mark II for reference. I also own the A74 with the larger better EVF as well. This sort of thing is heavily subjective though based on individual users... I hope that helps and you are very welcome for the review. All the best, Jay

Hi Thanks a lot for going through all these details in the video Please explain 1. How using APSC crop mode on APSC lenses, affects the resolution in photography and videography in A7C II? 2. Does the A7C II perform well in low light? Is it same, or better than ZV-E1? 3. Please do a size comparison with ZV-E1 as well. Thanks again
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann Жыл бұрын
Hello and my pleasure :) 1: APS-C crop mode will equal 16MP as apposed to 33MP for photos, and for video you will still get 4k footage, but it will be downsampled from ~4.6K as apposed to 7K 2: Yes, it performs excellent in low light I would say, but it does not have the same super high ISO capabilities as the ZV-E1 offers. 3: the ZV-E1 is a little smaller than the A7C II width wise, and a little thinner as well. Dimensions (W x H x D) A7C II = 4.9 x 2.8 x 2.5" / 124 x 71.1 x 63.4 mm | ZV-E1 = 4.8 x 2.8 x 2.1" / 121 x 71.9 x 54.3 mm

I like it better on the side of the camera, but it is smaller than the Sony a7iv and doesn't have the rubber eye-cup, so it's harder to see in there as well. For me it still works fine, but if I was doing pro field sports work in bright conditions, I would want a better viewfinder with the rubber eye cup. I have this Sony A7Cii on pre-order, just received the Sony A74 (got it for $150 cheaper than the A7Cii because of an educator discount) but have 30 days to send it back (I will have the Sony A7Cii by then!!!). I want two cameras, at least one smaller/lighter for travel. Currently, I only have two lenses: Sony 24mmF1.4 GM and the Sony 200-600mm G OSS (I shoot some wildlife on occasion). I was thinking about getting the Tamron 28-75mm G2 or maybe Sigma 50mm F2 DG DN for something small. I really like the 70-200 G F4 Macro that you are using. I am wondered whether I should stay with what I have or get both the A7Cii and the A7CR???? Sony gives you a bunch of choices!
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann Жыл бұрын
The 28-75mm is a great option, but the 50mm f/2 would also be nice and that new 70-200mm Macro is incredible! You have so many options these days it's hard to decide for sure. If you were to have 2 cameras it might make sense to have one A7CR and one A7C II, but it also might make sense to have matched sensors meaning keeping the A74 and getting the A7C II or two A7C II's for example. This is important if you want the same exact colors off each camera if doing multi-cam shoots for example. Food for though Robert...

HI, I have watched several of your videos on the a6700 and the A7C2. I have a a6300 now, on your a6700 streaming video several watchers asked if it was worth upgrading from a 6300. You said the image quality would not be much better, but it is a big upgrade for autofocus, ergonomics, and battery. My question, is the image quality of the A7c2 going to be much greater than the a6700 ? I take mostly landscapes and wildlife, rarely make videos. Most of the reviews out on both cameras are only for jpeg, hopefully RAW is supported for both now to compare. Thank you so much, your videos are great.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann Жыл бұрын
Hey there Don and yes the A7C II will produce better image quality, do to the larger full frame sensor. It will also offer cleaner images with less noise in lower light, and also has significantly better depth of field control via fast aperture lenses. However, with a good lens and god lighting, both cameras will have very similar image quality when compared a to b, which is true, but when you exploit the sensor a bit with either lower light or depth of field, that is where the most noticeable differences will be. The full frame sensor when shooting raw, also has more dynamic range, so the shadow and highlight detail is more easily recoverable ... Downside to the full frame of course is larger/heavier lenses in general, but Sony is now making many compact full frame lenses also which is great. I hope that helps and all the best, Jay

 @Jason_Hermann thank you for the reply, very helpful. I certainly would like to move to full frame, but my dilemma is having to replace my lenses (primarily zoom lenses). I do not have the budget for the better Sony lenses and would have to use third party lenses (Tamron, Sigma, etc.), and/or slower f4 lenses. One other thought is to get the 6700 and to trade in my Sony 18-135 for the Sony 16-55 2.8 Aps-C lens, (planning on buying the 70-350). I take my camera on hikes, so APS-C has worked out well for me, too bad the 6700 wasn't a 7000, my decision would be easier. thank you again

Bit of a head scratcher here if you want 4K60. The A7IV is clearly the better deal for me as a photo centric shooter in my market the price difference is about $100. Sony’s move here is pretty puzzling. You’d be better off in FF for video with the ZV-E1. If you really want a small APS-C 4K then the A6700 makes more sense. Maybe I need to dive in deeper but the positioning here seems a bit odd for the price.

From my perspective this is a smaller lighter weight a74 with better stabilization and the new Ai chip technology for less money…. It just depends on what type of camera works for your needs. For a lot of people the a74 makes more sense. The zve1 overheats to quick for me to consider and the a6700 also overheats pretty quick when recording video. These new a7c’s r the same size as a6700 also….

Hey J, I am considering the aR7c II for street shooting (upgrading from an OMD-EM10 mk2). Everything looks great, except for the EVF. Many reviewers say it is a weak point wrt other a7 models. How does it stack up generally for a camera in the $2k price range (all brands considered)? Unfortunately there are no camera stores left in the greater Atlanta area to get a hands-on experience. So I’m trying to get as many opinions of others that I can. Thanks.

Hello, yeah the EVF is not near as good as say the A7R5, A9III, A1, or even the A74 for example. However it still works fine in my opinion at the end of the day. When it comes to the higher end cameras like the Canon R5, R3, and so fourth it does not compare, but on the cheaper cameras like the R8 it is similar, just a bit smaller is all. I love the fact it is on the side of the camera so my nose does not smash into the screen.

A micro SD is a great idea and I think Nikon is the first to do that, at least from what I have seen over the past few years... I think Sony's thoughts on the matter is like, if you want that, get the A74... It seams like they are just making a camera for everyone in every niche'..

And the price will be at aprox 2900 dollars. The A7iv is 2600 dollars right now. I saw your video and you was blown away buy the AF. So is the AI processer worth 300 dollars more? That's the only thing I can see of real value when they go head to head.

@@pajisounds I don’t understand why the a7c2 would cost more than the a74 in your country? The default price from Sony is a few hundred less on their website? But no the a74 offers the dual card slot and better viewfinder, grip, and way more buttons. I feel the a74 is better for working professionals that need the dual slots for redundancy. Think big money gigs like weddings, concert photography, etc… the Ai autofocus is better on the a7c2, but the a74 af is still incredibly good.

Would you recommend a6700 or a7cii. i am a hybrid shooter but the only thing that is throwing me off the a6700 is the overheating issues I have been seeing. My current camera is the a6300 so would be making a sizeable jump.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann Жыл бұрын
The A6700 does not have the same thermal capabilities as the A7C II, so if that matters to you I would lean towards the A7C II. With that being said, when I used the A6700 for real world photography and video I had no issues at all. I filmed for a while doing the dragon fly scene in this review and it was 80 degrees with the camera in direct sunlight using the auto framing feature as well for a lot of it. I also recorded several 4k/120p segments testing and never had a problem ,because all the clips I actually take in the real word are not that long. If you plan on recording long form stuff, or constantly on and off type of thing you then I would not get the A6700. If you plan to use the camera in very high temps and humidity for example, I would also opt for the A7C II. I hope that helps, Jay

Hi thanks for the great video! I am an amateur photographer, doing it only as a hobby. I currently own canon 5d mark 4 which is a wonderful camera but in recent years with children and extra weight i stopped filming in it, it is too heavy. Thats why i am really interested in this camera and i think it will be my next one. However - i am not sure weather i should pay extra and get the a7cr, this way maybe i could crop in instead of using extra lens. But its very expensive and i also need to buy the lens.. and not fully sure ill use the heavy 61mp files.. would love to hear your thoughts about it.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I can help you with this, because I was just in the same boat and I had a really hard time deciding myself... I personally decided to go with the A7C II silver addition, because I opted for having two cameras with the same sensor for matching multi cam shoots and 33MP is enough for everything I do in the real world. I also own the A74, so you could argue I should have went with the A7CR for sure, but I just don't need that and the extra money as well can go towards a great lens. Of course I still want that 61MP resolution, but to your point I don't really need it, just want it for cropping potential and the extra detail which is amazing... If I were to get back into Art digitizing client work, then I might consider pickling one up though in the future...

How good is the active Stabilization on Zve1? is it 5 stop or 7 stop? Is it possible to program button on the zve1 body to activate dynamic stabilization without going into the menu? i am unable to decide which one to get. i am more into video however i do take photos as well. more like 60 for video and 40 for still but the lack of viewfinder is one if the flaws i am having hard time to ignore. but if i still still to use LCD on a7c mark 2 body than i might as well go for Zve1. please help

I would recommend the A7C II over the ZV-E1 for the viewfinder and better thermal abilities as far as overheating goes... Stabilization is better on the A7C II as well with 7-stops as apposed to 5 on the ZV-E1. In addition you get a 33MP for stills as apposed to 12mp on the zv-e1... You can enable the Dynamic Stabilization by going into the easily assessable function menu, I'm not 100% sure if you can program that to a custom button off the top of my head I will have to check when I get home... @Jason_Hermann Жыл бұрын
Well overall the ZV-E1 is a littler smaller, does not have the new stabilization system, overheats a lot faster if you are recording video in warmer temperatures, and it does not have an electronic viewfinder which is huge in my opinion. The ZV-E1 sensor is also much lower resolution, which makes it a bit more sensitive in lower light situations, and it has a really fast readout speed offering less rolling shutter. In addition the ZV-E1 offers 4k/120P & HD/240p which is really awesome! for slow-motion capture. The new A7C II has the latest and greatest technology features, better autofocus, and better thermals as far as overheating is concerned based on my testing. There are other differences also, but those are the main points I feel like... I hope that helps, Jay

whats the a7Cii video quality like vs ZVE1

Well the A7C2 is oversampled 4k so it is a bit crispier looking than the ZV-E1, but the ZV-E1 has a lower resolution sensor is better for lower light situations. The ZV-E1 also offers 4k/120p which is really nice... Downside with ZV-E1 is it overheats pretty fast due to not having the best thermals on the camera body itself. I feel like the ZV-E1 sensor has a better highlight roll off when shooting log as well, but noticed the more when using the FX3 which has the same sensor.

@@Jason_Hermann Outside of some useful updates to the AF, live streaming and some updated video options like LUT assist, many changes seem negligible, novelty and some could have been provided to A7IV via firmware. The price puts the camera into the pro-sumer category where actually useful tools like dual card slots and full sized HDMI support are imperative. At this price point you get a less than professional camera at pro prices with underwhelming features. In addition other cameras on the market offer much better value. The Canon R8 is a well priced hobby camera with no-crop 4k 60p, the Panasonic S5II features dual card slots, full sized HDMI and an active cooling system, the S5IIX with a lens currently sits at the same price as the A7CII and adds ALL-I and internal ProRes recording etc Ultimately this makes this camera somewhat confusing to me. Who is it aimed at? If I had an A7IV I wouldn't trade it in for this and if I needed a back up system I would simply buy another A7IV for the professional body and features. If I want a smaller travel camera, that adds convenience at the expense of features then the original A7C is still is there and so is the significantly lower priced and arguably better featured Fujifilm XS20. I understand Sony content performs well on KZbin so there is an incentive to treat each launch with a degree of hyperbole but a review should reveal the good, the bad and the ugly of these camera systems for the benefit of both consumers and camera brands.

What I would say is Sony offers the best technology of any brand to date as far as features overall and auto focus specifically. This is a hybrid camera and not a video orented camera like the Panasonic which has no where near the same autofocus abilities... The Panasonic is an awesome camera for a really great value I agree, but not nearly as easy to use and get great actions photos for example or tracking moving subjects in 4k video at speed. Same with the Fuji when it comes to action, sports, and tracking in video. That is next level camera performance that really only Sony is offering, which makes the price point what is in my opinion. For Pro use, I totally agree the A74 is a better option for the dual card slots, larger grip, and more buttons in particular as I said in the video... I honestly want to trade my A74 for this camera for everyday non pro use, because I want the smaller/ lighter camera body and the latest and greatest features. I totally understand this camera is not for you, which is why Sony makes so many different models to try and cater to everyone out there with various needs. For example, some people want the A7CR for that incredible resolution, because they want/ need that feature specifically. Others buy the FX3, because they need to record long form video and require a camera with a fan, so it will not overheat. Pro sports photographers need the best overall performance on the market and go for the A1 or A9 as another example... In any event, thanks for sharing all your thoughts and all the best, Jay

@@Jason_Hermann You make some fantastic points, Sony AF is sensational and currently performs much better than Panasonic for sports/ wildlife. But I'm not finding the Panasonic PDAF lacking for my use which is for people. I'm a little inclined to disagree that Sony has the best technology. Most of their cameras still use subpar EVF's and live view monitors, their "cinema line" lack many of the the tools needed by videographers including shutter angle and ND. Conversely Panasonic have included shutter angle, open-gate, full sized HDMI, active cooling, a great EVF, anamorphic support (including anamorphic specific IBIS) and loads of other video assist tools. Further more, they have included focus stacking, hi-res photo modes and live view composite (many of these tools are only just making it to Sony cameras). Outside of Panasonic, Canon AF is incredible and almost on par with what Sony offer. The R6II, the R8, the R7 can all hold their own and perform freakishly well. There is a perception that Sony offer the best because they generally appeal to younger people who get their info from KZbinrs who use Sony partly because they get lots of views. Sony have captured that audience really well. But dedication to one brand borders on cultish when we take every release with a big dose of hyperbole. I currently own a Canon and Panasonic, I almost bought an XH2S and strongly considered the FX30 and A7IV. I definitely see the appeal and can't deny they make great cameras. But as far as "best tech" goes, they lead in some areas and are noticeably lacking in others. Having had three or four memory cards fail on me and 2 hard drives I think it's a little nutty to trade in the redundancy recording of the A7IV for the ability to have screen follow you back and forth during the one or two times you actually use that feature. Great vid though. I always like to see peoples thoughts.

I appreciate the fallow up and by technology, I mean specifically Auto focus tracking abilities, and overall Sensor dynamic range/ quality... With that being said all the cameras are producing incredible results these days and Nikon and Fuji use Sony's sensors so they are very close and offer different color science.. All the other aspects you mentioned are totally fair points and I agree for those looking for more specific "tools", those other cameras you mentioned do offer different/ more tech, but what matters most to me is AF and sensor dynamic range. I am a photo person first... I would love to see the live emulation feature for long exposure photography in particular make it's way to Sony, because for me that feature is incredible! I would also like to see shutter angle for video 100% Sony's alpha series hybrid cameras are way more photo based, and the FX30 and FX3 are more video based hybrids, but not full fledge cine cameras like the FX6 for example. What Panasonic and Fuji have done for video users in particular is fantastic with those two models you mentioned. Canon and Nikon's AF is catching up for sure and Canon actually worked better for wildlife photography and video as far as the bird subject detection goes in particular. I used the R3 and RF 100-500mm and I can say it performed better than my A74 in that specific use case, but with human detection and other animals it was not nearly as good which is very interesting. I have not had a chance to use the Z8 or Z9 yet, but the Z30 had pretty darn good AF for real world use, but not Sony level... The Z8 and Z9 look to be incredible cameras for sure! At the end of the day we have so many awesome cameras to choose from with a variety of feature sets, so it's really not an issue if you think about it that way. Find what features, tools, image quality, etc.. matters to you most and go from there I woulds say.. There is no perfect camera for everyone is the bottom line and we need to always sacrifice one thing or anther it seams like. Also, I knew you were not a Sony user based on your comments and that is totally cool please don't take that the wrong way ;) All the best, Jay 👊
