I am not sponsored, so there won't be "ads" or promotions for products - but I did give Manfrotto a fair shout out for lending me the Nitro. I wanted to try it out, so when they offered I took it, but I don't think I can "review" it - there's just not enough to say (that I didn't say in the Best Video for A7 III video). I do wish to thank you for your kind words, I always appreciate when viewers take the time to correspond. I purchased this camera yesterday but have not yet received it. I'm an older person and did not grow up with computers. Maarten's Fuji review helped me get an X-E3 and I am really happy with it. I am tired of lugging around heavy DSLR gear and needed a good FF mirrorless. ANYTIME I need to consider gear, I read Ken Rockwell and then check Maarten's channel. Ken Rockwell is bombastic, to be sure, but he has a lot of tech data and real-world usage data on his reviews while Maarten is more or less an expert dissection of a camera's capabilities in an easy-to-digest format without screeching rock music or hype that I often see on other channels. I really think a lot of KZbin channels try to get in people's faces to attract sponsors so I appreciate Maarten's candor on the negative points of cameras. Thanks to his review, I've decided to trade in all my old gear for a nice, light a7riii and a decent zoom lens. Thanks!

Peter, Sony and Nikon are too far behind in terms of glass for their mirrorless. So, nothing they can do "fairly soon", in my opinion. I moved from Nikon D7100 to Sony A7 III and the difference is huge. Sony is something out of this world (though lenses are expensive, no doubt).
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Although I do agree with the advanced state of Sony's firmware and functionality, what if Canon and Nikon develop full frame mirrorless models that can use existing lenses with existing mounts?
@1Know1tHurts6 жыл бұрын
Maarten, I am pretty sure adapters would be offered but the size of the camera with adapted lenses would be an issue for some people. There is also a price consideration. I chose A7 III because it is really the best body money can buy today, in my opinion. I added Sony 85mm f1.8 for portraits and now waiting for Tamron 28-75 f2.8 for general use. This is a quite budget-friendly combination. If Nikon/Canon would not handicap their mirrorless as Sony did, I think, they have a good chance to be competitive. Another thing is nobody really knows when Nikon/Canon will release their mirrorless. I personally decided not to wait. At this rate of Sony's innovation, after Nikon/Canon release their cameras, new Sony bodies would be on the horizon.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
I was thinking (as long as anything is possible) that creating cameras that don't require an adapter would be a very popular solution. I don't understand - how is Sony's handicapped?

@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Although I did find the sky a little artificially blue if I didn't do a little adjustment. What amazes me with HLG (I should do a longer piece on this) is the extreme amount of detail and range that's available in the file, even in the 100Mbits recording. There's another 50-60% that can be recovered from the area that's blown out over 100 on the waveform.

@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
Yes. You'll need to make the adjustments in lightroom. But do consider that there are other ways to capture that kind of dynamic range in stills - from in-camera settings like HDR to bracketing and using photoshop to blend the images together.

Great video as always. I'm still on the fence on whether to get the a7iii or the riii, but considering your quality of photos here this camera seems to tick all the boxes. Quick question, what's your experience in using APS-C lenses on full frame for video? I know wouldn't use them for stills because of the 10mp, but in Super35 I'm wondering what the results would be if I used my Rokinon and Sigma lenses on a body like this.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I think that APS-C lenses (and using the APS-C crop, as I mentioned in my video about the settings for the A7 III) are fine. 4K is 8Mp, and the Super25mm area of the sensor is 10Mp. I wouldn't for stills, but for video, those are likely fine lenses. I'd love to have the time (Sony Canada only let me have it for ten days - I'm trying to get it back for another week or two) to compare lenses and resolutions from HD and 4K with FE and crop lenses with full and super 35mm setting just to increase my confidence in those thoughts.

Great Review as Always Maarten. I'm still searching around for my first ILC Camera and the A7 lll is very tempting given all its features & performance for the price but the prices for the lenses I want make it a little hard to swing for, do you think I should get an APS-C body like the A6500 and save up for some good full-frame glass and upgrade to a full frame body later on or just go right to full-frame
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you'd be happy with an APS-C camera, and yes, the A7III is very appealing. However, unless you need 4K video and the improved focus, you may be perfectly happy with the A6000.

I used my friends version of the SA7iii - there are a few points that I think weren't expressed enough. Which I think are common to many new Alpha cameras. But this is for the SA7iii. [01] The batteries have true use measurement which can be handy for estimating depletion time per mode. [02] The battery door has a small cut out to use the extended battery module. [03] The camera has some sealing but not much. [04] The menu can be easier to an extent by changing to tile view. Otherwise a fantastic review, technical and well executed.

Maarten, could I have professional opinion on whether should I get a a7r iii or a7 iii? Does 42 mp resolution worth the extra money? I understand, from Justin's evaluation in terms of dynamic range, high ISO and autofocus, that a7 iii has edge. I just wish I have the power of high resolution so when I print the picture in large print the resolution of print still shows finer details. Thanks for the advise.

Great Review, Glad to hear face party is back. I like your deep dive into the menus to understand what ech item can be used for. Also great Sony brought memory recall on a custom button to some capacity in. I wish to have this to reset to point and shoot after a creative shot. Would love to see this on my 6500, but I don't have hopes as software updates rarely bring in new features or menu adjustments
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. That comment ended up over a screen that said "face priority" - on the previous screen it's ridiculously shortened to "face prty", which is the source of the attempted humour. The ability to put a selection of preset settings (with aperture and shutter speed) on a button is way better than a memory position - I just really love that very hand feature. The nice thing is that the setting is only held while the button is down - it would be nice to have this as a toggle, but I understand the complications that introduces. And I completly agree - I wish they would add that, seems like it would be easy to do. But of course, I'd hope for a complete revamp of the menu - kzbin.info/www/bejne/poG2epR_o5agr9U

very good and detailed review. can u suggest between fuji xt4 and sony a7m3 as per the lens selection and price of lenses?
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
Both have excellent selection, although there are more e-mount lenses from more manufacturers. I could not say that either format has the edge in either quality of pricing. The e-mount issue is that the best lenses are full frame, which in size and price tend to be larger than x-mount lenses.

This review is one of the most thorough and well thought out reviews I've ever watched. You are a very talented person and I look forward to looking through your videos. I currently have a Canon 70D and have been considering a switch to Full Frame and Mirrorless. The Canon EOS R was my first consideration, but the Sony a7iii has me seriously considering switching to Sony. I don't have an investment in Canon lens, so I believe the switch may be warranted. Do you think I am making a fair determination to switch to Sony? Also, I am quite tech-savvy, will it take a long time to adapt my muscle memory to the Sony button/menu layout?
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Wow, I'm overwhelmed by your kind words, thanks, appreciated. This decision depends on what you are after in making the switch. Unless you are planning to switch into heavy video production, or you have a very demanding focus/burst situation, I'd be happy to remain with the 70D, which I think is a terrific piece of gear. Of course you can adapt - but it requires both muscle memory and mental agility to adjust. The Sony just has so many more options - figuring them out, understanding which work better for you and under which circumstances or for which scenes they may be appropriate will take time. Of course, the more you shoot, and the more time you spend "playing", the easier and faster it will be.

Hello! I have question, I have heard a lot of people who were disappointed with the ability of the A7III to be used with non-native lenses (i.e. Canon lenses), because the camera then lost ability to autofocus. Have you tried using the A-mount lenses on this camera (with an adapator ring), and if so, did you notice any difference in the camera's perfomance? Thanks for the review, so comprehensive and clear !
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
I am always disappointed when using non-native cameras, and this is no exception. What you will find is that the latest version of the Sony A apapter works well, but stills comes short of what's possible with native lenses. Hi Maarten. Would like to know from my favourite camera reviewer: apart from the battery life (doesn't bother me, got backups), apart from the menu system (can be customised), and apart from the crop factor, would you really consider the A7III thàt much better compared to the A6500?

As you didn't say "apart from the full frame sensor", I would say it is. The focus engine is a substantial improvement and any of the G-Master full frame lenses with the focus hold button make the A7 III a dream to use.

Have wanted to down size to mirrorless and Sony has always been on the radar but have waited for Canon to see if they could compete. Canon now has the R series but it is averaging about $400 dollars more than the A7III. After finally finding and watching your review of the A7III there is no doubt about which camera I should pick up. Great video with a lot of great information. Hi Maarten. I have followed your in-depth review on the sony A7III and many others with great interest. I currently shoot using a Fujifilm X-T2 & recently X-H1. I have quite an extensive range of Fujinon lenses 16mm F1.2, 18-55mm F2.8, 35mm f2.8, 23mm f2.8 and the 50-140mm F2.8. I shoot landscapes mostly and on special occasions for our church events - the worship, the pastor's delivering the sermon. I enjoyed taking candid shots of the pastors those occasions and the 50-140mm f2.8 has performed excellently! Of late, I have been shooting at a floorball league for our church team. Whilst the X-T2 and recently X-H1 (despite its quirky firmware) has served my needs well, I am contemplating trading-in my X-T2 for the A7III. I am cognizance of the huge outlay I would have to spend on lenses too, etc. Any advice on this?
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. I understand your dilemma, as I'm having the same thoughts - there's a lot to like about the A7 III. However, I keep asking myself, what is it that bothers me about the X-T2 that I'm hoping the A7 III will fix - and I have not come away with a satisfactory answer. While I'd clearly love to own one, I'm just not sure spending that amount will actually make much of an improvement - other than the EYE AF button on the lens ...
@tkphotosz6 жыл бұрын
Hi Maarten, your last sentence says it all for me. Besides the EYE AF that I deemed is superior to the X-H1 & X-T2 based on KZbin reviews, I could not think of anything more besides it being a full frame mirrorless camera that I felt may be useful for low light photography during my church events.

I really trust your judgment and reviews a humble request for Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 art lens for sony review. And would you prefer the Sony A7iii over the fuji Xt - 3 if the full-frame is not a priority? However good after-sale services and photo tours of the company might be a deal-breaker. And is the lower battery life of the fujifilm an important thing to look out for?
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. I would never let battery life govern my decision - a second battery is a simple purchase and much preferred to buying a camera just for better battery. I'm not sure my viewers have much tolerance for lens reviews, there are others who do it better, so not many people watch them. As for the Sony vs Fujifilm - both have many fine features and capabilities, however, for video I'd take the X-T3.

I'm curious what you think about the difference in IQ between the Sony full frame A7III and the Fuji system (XT2 or Xpro2). I understand that Fuji has a crop sensor. I've shot professionally with Canon full frame gear, and have owned both the X=T1 and X100T as travel & street cameras. In no way did I feel they matched the full frame quality. However I recently bought the X100F and am blown away by the image quality, to the point of referring to it as the best camera I've owned.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
It's always nice to hear from a photographer who loves their camera - it's nice to hear you've found a camera that satisfies you. There is a size difference between full frame and APS-C size (those found in Fuji cameras) sensors - it's best defined by the crop factor, which is 1.5. I did a more detailed description here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l33PdoClaMmaq5o But sensor size gets tied up with resolution, and in the end if the resolution is the same, the difference is the size of the individual image capturing elements - larger elements can capture more light in less time. I would say that two 24Mp sensors would have roughly the same quality, but the larger sensor will have better low light capabilty. Quality is, of course, also bound up in lenses. I own an X-T2, and am anxious to have the A7 III back for a longer period to do a comparison. I feel that there is a difference, and that it falls to the A7 III - which, although it has the same megapixel count delivers a higher quality image, but not by much. One observation - I do send more Lightroom time with Sony than Fuji, where I'm generally happier with the in-camera JPEGs.
@susanceltic6 жыл бұрын
Hi Maarten, thanks for your reply. I understand the point about sensor size, yet some feel it does not make much difference unless you compare IQ from an APS-C or Full Frame with that of a medium format camera. I recently read that pro photographer Zack Arias sold his Canon full frame gear when he realized he could get the same quality with his Xpro2 and prime lenses. As stated, I could see a clear difference between Xt1 quality and Canon full frame... but I actually think I'm getting sharper images with the X100F than I get with 5Dii plus 50L lens. And that's saying a lot. I've noticed a sort of 3D quality with the new camera. Thanks for your reviews, which I've found quite helpful.

While I do love my pair of Sony APSC cameras, A6400 and A6500, the major drawback for me is the 1/4000 second shutter limitation. Sure, 1/4000 will stop just about anything but, 1/8000 is often very handy when I want to use a f/1.8 or faster lens wide open outside in daylight. My only worry is whether my 24-70mm f/4 Vario-Tessar lens is sharp enough for the A7iii sensor...

Depending on the lens, the A7 III, with its larger sensor is likely the better choice. That said, if you're an old-school photographer, the physical dials and settings on the X-T3 (or the X-T2 as the X-T3 doesn't add much for landscape) might be preferred.
