The sore point for videographers using an external display with or without a recorder is that after connecting the external display to the HDMI socket, the camera automatically disables AF facial recognition . The same absurd thing happens when you try to connect an axternal screen to Sony camcorders such as Sony FDR AX-700 or FDR AX-100.

That is an odd situation, and hard to understand why it's disabled.

I'm getting drowned with the choices I have... Would you go for an A7 II + Tamron 28-75 f2.8 or A7 III + Sony 28-70 f3.5-5.6? Semi-Pro use, mostly studio work (product/portraits), outdoor sessions... Both combos are the same price in my country, kinda tight budget (wouldn't be able to upgrade for almost a year). Thanks!

Not familiar with both lenses ... but I'd take the superior focus of the A7III.

Does image down sampling from higher Megapixel to lower megapixels in post reduces the noise and improves the overall look of the image? For that matter, down sampling from 24 MP to 16 versus 42 to 16 shows up any difference on the end result? Anyone having idea about this, may guide me... Thanks in advance for your time and consideration to comment!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
It may, it depends on the other adjustments you make. Remember that noise is not a single pixel, it's multiple pixels providing dissimilar information. Downsampling does not necessarily choose or blend the right pixels to reduce noise - but there are settings in some applications to do that.

Civil comments only?? Well, forget it then. Looks like a monumental camera achievement. Unless Canon and Nikon bring out comparable mirrorless cameras fairly soon I think they might be in deep trouble. The only thing I still don't like about Sony video is the greens. Great review as always. You do a staggering amount of work on each review.

@1Know1tHurts

Peter, Sony and Nikon are too far behind in terms of glass for their mirrorless. So, nothing they can do "fairly soon", in my opinion. I moved from Nikon D7100 to Sony A7 III and the difference is huge. Sony is something out of this world (though lenses are expensive, no doubt).
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Although I do agree with the advanced state of Sony's firmware and functionality, what if Canon and Nikon develop full frame mirrorless models that can use existing lenses with existing mounts?
@1Know1tHurts
@1Know1tHurts 6 жыл бұрын
Maarten, I am pretty sure adapters would be offered but the size of the camera with adapted lenses would be an issue for some people. There is also a price consideration. I chose A7 III because it is really the best body money can buy today, in my opinion. I added Sony 85mm f1.8 for portraits and now waiting for Tamron 28-75 f2.8 for general use. This is a quite budget-friendly combination. If Nikon/Canon would not handicap their mirrorless as Sony did, I think, they have a good chance to be competitive. Another thing is nobody really knows when Nikon/Canon will release their mirrorless. I personally decided not to wait. At this rate of Sony's innovation, after Nikon/Canon release their cameras, new Sony bodies would be on the horizon.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
I was thinking (as long as anything is possible) that creating cameras that don't require an adapter would be a very popular solution. I don't understand - how is Sony's handicapped?

Thanks Maartin. Those left side port doors are like those from a cheap toy. No matter how good the specs it is meaningless if the camera dies the moment it becomes wet. Same with the price. $2000 is not a bargain if the camera lasts only a few years. Worth pointing out too the price here in Europe is the equivalent of $2800. An outrageous hike by Sony.

Agreed. Although I did find the sky a little artificially blue if I didn't do a little adjustment. What amazes me with HLG (I should do a longer piece on this) is the extreme amount of detail and range that's available in the file, even in the 100Mbits recording. There's another 50-60% that can be recovered from the area that's blown out over 100 on the waveform.

Maarten's Fuji review helped me get an X-E3 and I am really happy with it. I am tired of lugging around heavy DSLR gear and needed a good FF mirrorless. ANYTIME I need to consider gear, I read Ken Rockwell and then check Maarten's channel. Ken Rockwell is bombastic, to be sure, but he has a lot of tech data and real-world usage data on his reviews while Maarten is more or less an expert dissection of a camera's capabilities in an easy-to-digest format without screeching rock music or hype that I often see on other channels. I really think a lot of KZbin channels try to get in people's faces to attract sponsors so I appreciate Maarten's candor on the negative points of cameras. Thanks to his review, I've decided to trade in all my old gear for a nice, light a7riii and a decent zoom lens. Thanks!

Throw in as many as you need - and thanks for the kind words. While I agree that I don't spend much time on image quality, I do provide samples on flickr to allow viewers to make their own judgements. I'm not a pixel peeper, nor do I have the equipment to do what others like dpreview do so well with repeatable, comparable test setups. Although I do my best to cover a lot of ground, I also realize I can't be all things to all people, and do recommend that you make a judgement about any camera after reviewing several sources. Maarten Heilbron Thank you, Maarten. Perhaps I wasn't concentrating, but despite your usual excellent explanation I got a little lost somewhere in the video settings detail. It just seemed to me because of this and the many other features that there are really too many and would detract from my use. The Fuji cameras you have reviewed on the other hand seem much more straightforward. Maybe it is a complexity of menu problem as you alluded to?

Another rather pleasant review, however I tried the exact same 24-105 f/4 lens on A7 3 & found it to be as far as I would like to go with the Sony system, Nikon & Canon have far better ergonomics for such a lens & larger ie 70-200 & 100-400 & so on, the new Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 at the price of 28mm should be better suited to A7 3 . The Panasonic G9 & system is much more friendly & for me represents an extension of logic the Sony does. I like the improvements in body Sony has made & features . However I still prefer my D850 & XT2, definitely the G9 as numero 3 ,maybe Sony A7 IV?

Great video as always. I'm still on the fence on whether to get the a7iii or the riii, but considering your quality of photos here this camera seems to tick all the boxes. Quick question, what's your experience in using APS-C lenses on full frame for video? I know wouldn't use them for stills because of the 10mp, but in Super35 I'm wondering what the results would be if I used my Rokinon and Sigma lenses on a body like this.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I think that APS-C lenses (and using the APS-C crop, as I mentioned in my video about the settings for the A7 III) are fine. 4K is 8Mp, and the Super25mm area of the sensor is 10Mp. I wouldn't for stills, but for video, those are likely fine lenses. I'd love to have the time (Sony Canada only let me have it for ten days - I'm trying to get it back for another week or two) to compare lenses and resolutions from HD and 4K with FE and crop lenses with full and super 35mm setting just to increase my confidence in those thoughts.

Great Review, Glad to hear face party is back. I like your deep dive into the menus to understand what ech item can be used for. Also great Sony brought memory recall on a custom button to some capacity in. I wish to have this to reset to point and shoot after a creative shot. Would love to see this on my 6500, but I don't have hopes as software updates rarely bring in new features or menu adjustments

Thanks for your kind words. That comment ended up over a screen that said "face priority" - on the previous screen it's ridiculously shortened to "face prty", which is the source of the attempted humour. The ability to put a selection of preset settings (with aperture and shutter speed) on a button is way better than a memory position - I just really love that very hand feature. The nice thing is that the setting is only held while the button is down - it would be nice to have this as a toggle, but I understand the complications that introduces. And I completly agree - I wish they would add that, seems like it would be easy to do. But of course, I'd hope for a complete revamp of the menu - kzbin.info/www/bejne/poG2epR_o5agr9U

If you plan on shooting 4k video do not buy this camera. It overheats! On my 3rd shoot with the camera, it overheated 10 minutes into a shoot and I looked like an idiot in front of my client. Called and talked to a Sony engineer and he said "that's just what happens when you pack 4k recording technology into the small body size. Find time to let it cool down when you are on a long shoot". Sorry, not an option! DON'T BELIEVE ME....Google: Sony a7iii overheating issues.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
Did you set the "Auto Pwr OFF Temp." to high? Ten minutes? Yes, in hot locations, recording 4K video will provoke overheating, but that can happen to nearly all cameras, and is certainly worse on smaller bodies (the A5100, A6000 are particularly susceptible - and don't have that menu setting.) However, with the menu setting on high under conditions where the temperature is within the camera's stated range, it takes quite a lot to overheat the camera - and in my testing at 25C, you'd certainly get more than 60 minutes before you even saw the indication.

While I do love my pair of Sony APSC cameras, A6400 and A6500, the major drawback for me is the 1/4000 second shutter limitation. Sure, 1/4000 will stop just about anything but, 1/8000 is often very handy when I want to use a f/1.8 or faster lens wide open outside in daylight. My only worry is whether my 24-70mm f/4 Vario-Tessar lens is sharp enough for the A7iii sensor...

Hi Maarten. I enjoyed your review. I'm a Nikon shooter with every f/1.4 Nikkor prime lens up to and including the 85mm f/1.4, but I couldn't resist adding a Sony A7 III. I bought mine with the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 G Master as my starting lens. Your review helped me come up to speed more quickly with several useful tips and bit of info. I am going to use my A7 III for video shooting, and as an alternative to my Nikon D750 / D780 when I want to have some fun with a different camera. Keep up the great work! I enjoy your channel.

One of things that’s holding me back at the moment is the screen jitters I perceive viewing the EVF when in AF-C mode when half pressed. I see a lot of moire too. AF-S looks fine. Hi there Maarten (by the way, the name seems Dutch like I am) thanks for this review/tutorial. Coming from Canon and just having obtained the A7III (together with the Sony 90 mm 2.8 macro) I am learning a lot about this great camera. About the Eye AF; it seems that most people use the Focus hold button on the lens. Although this is great shooting horizontally, I find this difficult when I am shooting vertically. My thumb on top of the lens than. For now I am using the AEL button for this. I wonder how you think about this. Thanks again.

I want to travel as lightweight as possible. Can I get your opinion on 35mm prime lenses? Between the Sony 35mm 1.8 and the Zeiss 35mm 2.8 is the extra cost of the Zeiss worth it? At twice the cost I would expect quite an improvement in image quality with the Zeiss.

I'm new to the whole photography/videography thing. I have a question. Using an a7iii, I'm using Imaging Edge to project pictures to review as I take them. I'd like to review video too, how do I do that efficiently without having to disconnect and manually import video to my PC? There has to be a way!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
Cameras are changing so quickly, we all feel we're new to the photo/video thing. Although I've installed and tried it, I'm not very familiar with Imaging Edge, which is designed for stills (not video). I assume you're using a Windows PC (I'm on a Mac) and I'm not sure if the camera is mounted as a drive while using IE. That would enable you to see/play the video files. Otherwise, that's a limitation you'll have to live with. A workaround might be to remove the SD card from the camera and insert it into the PC or a reader connected to the PC. Hope this helps.

Thanks Maarten, "I'm coming late to the dance with Sony" been shooting Canon since Digital really took off. Have wanted to down size to mirrorless and Sony has always been on the radar but have waited for Canon to see if they could compete. I have a Canon crop Frame mirrorless which is not bad but I've always preferred shooting with full frame cameras. Canon now has the R series but it is averaging about $400 dollars more than the A7III. After finally finding and watching your review of the A7III there is no doubt about which camera I should pick up. Great video with a lot of great information. Now all I have to do is find the right adapter for all my Canon glass. Thanks Again for all the work you did for this review.

I'm curious what you think about the difference in IQ between the Sony full frame A7III and the Fuji system (XT2 or Xpro2). I understand that Fuji has a crop sensor. I've shot professionally with Canon full frame gear, and have owned both the X=T1 and X100T as travel & street cameras. In no way did I feel they matched the full frame quality. However I recently bought the X100F and am blown away by the image quality, to the point of referring to it as the best camera I've owned.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
It's always nice to hear from a photographer who loves their camera - it's nice to hear you've found a camera that satisfies you. There is a size difference between full frame and APS-C size (those found in Fuji cameras) sensors - it's best defined by the crop factor, which is 1.5. I did a more detailed description here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l33PdoClaMmaq5o But sensor size gets tied up with resolution, and in the end if the resolution is the same, the difference is the size of the individual image capturing elements - larger elements can capture more light in less time. I would say that two 24Mp sensors would have roughly the same quality, but the larger sensor will have better low light capabilty. Quality is, of course, also bound up in lenses. I own an X-T2, and am anxious to have the A7 III back for a longer period to do a comparison. I feel that there is a difference, and that it falls to the A7 III - which, although it has the same megapixel count delivers a higher quality image, but not by much. One observation - I do send more Lightroom time with Sony than Fuji, where I'm generally happier with the in-camera JPEGs.
@susanceltic
@susanceltic 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Maarten, thanks for your reply. I understand the point about sensor size, yet some feel it does not make much difference unless you compare IQ from an APS-C or Full Frame with that of a medium format camera. I recently read that pro photographer Zack Arias sold his Canon full frame gear when he realized he could get the same quality with his Xpro2 and prime lenses. As stated, I could see a clear difference between Xt1 quality and Canon full frame... but I actually think I'm getting sharper images with the X100F than I get with 5Dii plus 50L lens. And that's saying a lot. I've noticed a sort of 3D quality with the new camera. Thanks for your reviews, which I've found quite helpful.

Maarten, could I have professional opinion on whether should I get a a7r iii or a7 iii? Does 42 mp resolution worth the extra money? I understand, from Justin's evaluation in terms of dynamic range, high ISO and autofocus, that a7 iii has edge. I just wish I have the power of high resolution so when I print the picture in large print the resolution of print still shows finer details. Thanks for the advise.

You've covered a lot there. Thanks! Some are missing, but I suppose it's because the camera is really so complex and so many options are there. One thing you failed to show is the ClearImage Zoom. You have to try it. In photo mode, you get a 2x magnification. So, a 50mm f1.8 lens becomes a 100mm in FOV! In video mode, you only get 1.5x magnification or equiv to 75mm FOV. But the magic is not in the magnification. What is surprising is that this ClearImage zoom can really be so clear and the resolution is so high! You can still read the letters in small prints when I tested it shooting a spray bottle cleaner. You do lose the pinpoint AF, and the camera AF's in its own accord, so maybe you won't see the exact area it chose. But I hardly had a bad shot. I suppose what you focused on prior to going over the std zoom is where it will zoom. I programmed that option vic Fn-3, but later on decided to move it to the center button on the dial. I press that and even my canon lens + MB4 adapter gets this clearimage zoom! I just turn the dial to pick the zoom range (1.1x, 1.2x, 1.3x...2.0x). Unfortunately, you don't have a smooth zooming action. You have this fixed points to pick, so you have hard stops for the magnification. FYI, this option is not available with PZ lenses like the 18-105 f4 OSS. You get that clearimage zoom by turning the zoom ring or the rocker zoom switch on the lens. you should try it. That clear image zoom is really impressive - both in photo and video. Added FYI - I tested the A7-3 in video 4k, and there is no overheating. Ambient temp was 30 deg and ended at 32 deg later. The camera back was just slightly warm. No overheating. Not even the warning. I recorded 4 x 30min (as it stops at 29:59) and I still had 37% left on the battery. I tried it another time with 32 deg ambient and I think I reached 2:25 with 13% remaining. No overheating sign or shutdowns. So, the battery issue should be laid to rest. I don't know in your case, but in our country, you charge the battery in camera via USB. Both micro usb and usb-c cna charge, but no one is faster than the other. They supplied us with a usb cable and a small 1.5A charger where you plug and attach the usb cable. The external charger where you can remove the battery from the camera is separately bought and costs U$100! It is reported to charge faster. The usb charger it comes with charged my nearly depleted fz100 3+ hours. In real world situations, one probably will charge it at 25-30% remaiining, so charging time is less. I got a free 2nd battery from Sony as part of their promo, so I don't think I will have a problem with a whole day's shooting, even with video.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Yes, I'm well aware that my title is hyperbolic. I did mention and demo the ClearImage zoom in my Best Video Settings video for the A7 III. I think that, particularly for video, it's a very usable feature with little or no compromise to quality, even in 4K. I wish I'd had the time to do a more complete set of video quality comparison tests before I had to return the camera. One of the features I overlooked is the completely hidden Bright Monitoring. You find it as a custom button option, and it can be handy when shooting in the dark. Although I did highlight EyeAF, that's really the land of unexplored settings.

Not to fawn on you, but I do like your reviews. Comprehensive as best as possible, and it covers most users concern. And you get to the point. No round-about preambles or sideshows. Though humor and some minor side words spice it up so it won't be a litany of specs or overly technical. I like you and Gordan Laing, though his style is a bit different though still useful in his style with his friend Doug. His is more of the commentary and comparison type. Many will ignore that clear image zoom because it is a software fix. But that thing has come a long way. It is really hard to know if one shows a picture of that if it is a digital software uprezzing or not. It is so good! I checked the exif and it registers as 24mp! I wonder how they did that? The advantage is that I can make my tamron 17-35 f2.8-4 to a 34-70 f2.8-4.0! Once I get a tamron 28-75 f2.8, that is a 56-150 f2.8 lens! Amazing! :)
