I think it's still got some work it needs improving on, but it's a decent dslr. The price is too high for the body alone without a lens kit, plus it doesn't have reversible flip touch screen. Auto focus needs improving, bright light colour saturation is off, sharpness issues, etc...i'd rather the 70d even though the video quality isn't as good it's got everything I want in a dslr. It's just outdated now so i'm waiting or the 80d, it's apparently got features from the 7d mk2
@saeedmatar22919 жыл бұрын
GrowingDownUnder but its not a dslr ... its a mirror-less there is a difference , and how do you expect a full frame camera to come with a kit lens ?!!!!! and the reversible flip touch screen is just a gimmick , the autofucos is excellent in this camera , bright light colour saturation and sharpness are the best right now , and also consider the new 500d if you want a beast to kill both the 80d and 7dmk2 .

I couldn't be happier. The A7R mkII has replaced both my EOS 6D (Full frame sensor) and EOS 60D (ASP-C size sensor). Both Bodies are for sale now. I have a collection of Sigma lenses 35mm f1,4. 50mm f1,4. 10-20mm f3,5 (ASP-C). 85mm F1,4. 70-200mm f2,8. 120-300mm f2,8. 180mm f2.8. All of these lenses work with a number of the Sony focusing methods. So happy. What is just so unreal is that the viewfinder shows you what shot will be taken (you can see the effect of stopping up/down). I have waaay more in-focus shots than ever before. This is a dream of a camera. Just be prepared to carry extra batteries!!!
@alluviapictures46928 жыл бұрын
Glad you're having a positive experience with the A7RII, but here was my experience... The auto focus system isn't all that great. I have an a7 ii which out performs it when it shouldn't. The IBIS is terrible in crop mode on this camera... it causes lag when you move around... sorta a slight catch up to your motion ... at least that's what I"m getting. Normal on close and medium shots... but when you start doing large objects like trees that are about 15 or more feet away, it shows up and any hand shake really shows up badly. The rolling shutter is the worst I've seen in S35 Mode... worse than the A6300. Getting back to the auto focusing... I was photographing birds, fast action flying, and the a7r ii had a heck of time getting sharp focus on the subject, where as the a7 ii was right on! I went through the AF settings A-Z, and there were just too many misses and not enough hits one might say... I just had to send the A7r II back, and keep my A7 II. Sure the video is sharper than the A7 II 1080p... should be that it's 4K FF or 4K Crop 1 to 1 readout no pixel skipping, but the rolling shutter is terrible... 4K FF is better, but it's too soft... more like 2 or 2.5K, and has more artifacts in it because it's not a 1 to 1 read (well it wouldn't be on a 42MP sensor...). I like to do a lot of movement in my shots... not still or locked down (which is funny cause most of the a7r ii video is all still type shots...) and I know there are ways to avoid it, but that puts a clamp on me and the RL is horrendous! I'd rather have 1080p video that usable, then UHD Video that's no (unless i do still shots or extremely slow moves). My RX10 III has much better UHD video in terms of usability... The A6300 def. had better video since it does a 1 to 1 read s35 mode 24P.. 6K down sampled to 4K... although the RL was bad as well... but not as bad as the A7R II crop mode. Maybe I had a bad copy.. it wasn't a grey market version... US model with warranty... but not for me.

This was shooting clips that average about 1 min long with about 1min average between shots with LCD open switching between super 35 and FF modes. Kai missed one thing, the real uppercut is that with the use of a third party electronic adapter for Canon, it focuses just as fast as native Sony ones, making Canon bodies virtually irrelevant as you can switch to A7Rii with all your Canon lens, functioning just as well as ever.
@calvinchann19969 жыл бұрын
Not all.
@DerSystematiker9 жыл бұрын
+sosoishero I don't know how fast native Sony lenses focus on an A7RII but many native Canon Lenses focus lightning fast on Canon bodies. The A7RII with adapter doesn't come even close. Depending on which adapter you use and which lens it will work okay, unreliable or not at all. The A7RII AF with adapter is good for "slow" photos - but with focus peaking you really don't need AF at all for that. Where AF and tracking is most important - when it comes to sports and action - the A7 as well as basically every mirrorless I've tried stand no chance against a decent DSLR. I wish I could make the transition to mirrorless - I really like 'em - but I can't. Besides the AF performance there are still some issues with the handling - apart from the weird weight distribution when using heavy lenses. Especially with the Sony. You have to press too many buttons and scroll through too many stuff even for elementary settings. Yes, there's a learning steeper curve for Nikon or Canon DSLR bodies (the better ones) but once you got used to it you can do everything so fast. The camera is more like an extension of the photographer. Whereas the Sony feels more like a computer.
@sosoishero9 жыл бұрын
DerSystematiker Everything you've said is just pure fanboyism. I am no Sony fanboy and that I own GH4, A7s, A7R II and a 5D Mark III. In fact, most of my lens are Canon lens. -Steeper learning curve for Canon: No, learning curve for Canon is virtually non-existent because Canon just cripple their camera so much and option aren't their in the first place. Without options and features, how can that be "learning curve"?Do you even understand the word "learning curve"? - Using non native lens to compare AF. You are using Canon lens on Canon body comparing against Canon lens on Sony bodies. Try using native Sony lens on Sony bodies then we'll talk. -Weight Distribution: Bullshit excuse for comparison, especially A7R II isn't that lightweight due to IBIS and the redesigned body. Hell ,low level Canon bodies such as 750D and 760D are so lightweight you can make that argument go anywhere. You can even make a 1DX bad weight distribution by using a 1000mm f 5 Sigma. Invalid point here. -"The camera is more like an extension of the photographer. Whereas the Sony feels more like a computer." One of the most bullshit excuse I ever heard in my entire career. People go to bodies that have more features and are most cost efficient. How can you even distinguish between "extension of photographer". My fellow photographers and cinematographer are leaving Canon bodies (except buying a 5DSR because of that monstrous 50MP beast) and that's a fact. -Unreliable AF : again if you want "reliable", go with native lens, I just have no idea why you use this point to convince me. It is just plain invalid "Where AF and tracking is most important - when it comes to sports and action" If you are a sport photographer, you'll be getting a Canon 7D system anyways as there are no competition on that field right now. Using a body feature against another bodies is just irrelevant. I could say that to you your 7D only have 20.2MP but my A7Rii have 42MP. Does A7Rii now became a better camera? No. It is better because of more options, just like you've said A7Rii have peaking and Canon doesn't. Everything you said is now is like comparing a 2015 - 5 seater Luxurious Mercedes for comfort against a 1995 - 2 seater Ferrari for speed. And state that the old Ferrari is superior because it has more speed. Don't be a keyboard warrior, go out and take more pictures. Also, I don't hate Canon, I only hate ignorant people like you.
@DerSystematiker9 жыл бұрын
+sosoishero Fanboyism? Fan of what? Quick to use pro DSLRs with fast telephoto lenses no matter who makes them? Then I'm guilty as charged. BTW, you threw in the Canon brand in the first place - and you know why. You're saying - since there's no learning curve for Nikon and Canon DSLR - every human being is born with the knowledge of what the button with the asterisk on it does, what CF3-4 means and how to enable back button focus and stuff like that etc.? If not, it's obviously you who hasn't a clue what a learning curve is. There are more buttons and they are highly customizable. All I'm saying is that the handling is meant to be as quick as possible once you know how it works and you configured as you like it. With the current Sony cameras it's different. Many things I have change a lot, have to be changed through menus - requiring lot more button actions. The Sony is kind of more intuitive - you will never need a manual - but it's slower to operate. Weight Distribution: You can't say mirrorless cameras are much small and lightweight but ignoring the disadvantages that come with that. Weight distribution is worse than a pro DSLR with when using the same heavy glass. Period. I tried it and it does not work that well. Even a 70-200 2.8 - which is a very common lens - was notably cumbersome on a A7R when resting the lens on my left hand while turning the zoom ring. To make it comfortable I had to move my hand more towards the front of the lens making it harder to operate the zoom ring. Back the AF topic. You wrote: >>Try using native Sony lens on Sony bodies then we'll talk.> with the use of a third party electronic adapter for Canon, it focuses just as fast as native Sony ones>making Canon bodies virtually irrelevant as you can switch to A7Rii with all your Canon lens, functioning just as well as ever>If you are a sport photographer, you'll be getting a Canon 7D system anyways as there are no competition on that field right now.>I could say that to you your 7D only have 20.2MP but my A7Rii have 42MP. DerSystematiker Ok lets keep this civil. You've got a point at "rendering Canon obsolete" because 7D is so much quicker then A7Rii , Sorry on contradicting myself, I don't expect people to have evenry single Canon lens in the world to test but... "Learning curve problem". You are now just picking bones in an egg. If you can't understand exaggeration I don't know what. You've said Canon and Nikon have "steeper" learning curve, and said now the Canon is easier to use. If Sony had more options to learn from than Canon, I would say Sony has a more steeper learning curve. The problem is, everything in those "overwhelming menus" have their purpose, while Canon doesn't even have them. You ,to me ,are justifying the lack of features are good thing. Lack of features means it is not good. "A7R on 80-200" You sure it is a A7R not A7Rii? A7rii is way heavier and bulkier, more resemblance a traditional DSLR. More over, you could just add extra weight( like external battery compartment) to balance it all out. On the other hand you cannot remove weight from Canon Pro DSLR if you are using not too heavy lens like Primes lens. I won't make you like a lightweight camera, period, but again, it is the choice of customization. I could add weight if I like, If i want to use it as travel camera, it can be light. Canon on the hand always heavy. You again to me is justifying a heavy camera. Heavy camera is not a good thing. P.S. A7Rii 625g vs 860g 5DIII body only >>How's that different? I'd say it's subjective again. Does a sports photographer care about focus peaking?

Sony is showing off for several decades here! In every aspect of industry they are involved in they invented something new. And several times it costed a lot to them. They were one of the first to launch massive production of amplifiers with field-effect transistors, one of the inventors of "laser disc" (CDs and DVDs), first to make portable players, they invented the MiniDisc system (unsuccessful one), memory cards, three sensors in the digital video- and telecameras, first who put an EVF on a photo camera, they are one of the companies which invented the SACD and the BlueRay. Sony is a freak on the market. They try to do everything in a different way. Many of their inventions made modern world and many costed billions of dollars to the company. They are the only company in the world that makes so pricy mistakes continuing to make them! Look at the photo cameras Sony were producing before acquiring Konica-Minolta: fracturing all the traditions of the that time market.

Matthew Hwang Sony's price for this camera's actually more than pretty competitive when you're comparing what you get for what you're spending, considering the selling points for the other cameras in its class like the D810 and the 5DS and the 5DS R.

GrowingDownUnder Is the price out of most people's budgets? Obviously. But for those whose jobs or pocketbooks demand the best tools, the reason why Sony can charge the prices that it does on cameras such its A7 lineup, its RX100 and RX10 lineup of pocket point and shoots and "bridge-style" cameras, and its RX1 lineup of *full frame* sensor pocket cameras, is simply because no other manufacturer makes anything like them, or makes similar items which perform *across the board* as well as they do. Look at which company has grabbed "Best Camera of the Year" honors in more camera categories from more trusted and reputable camera review sites since 2012, and there'll be only one name at the top of that list: Sony. Customers are obviously paying the price for what they want, and because dealers can't keep in stock the amount of cameras in the A7 lineup (most notably the A7R II) they're not about to start cutting prices anytime soon because they simply don't need to, as the cameras simply have no competition.

Yeah I guess that's true i'll look more into sony you make good points, I'm not hating on sony just so far canon has had what i'm looking for. MY biggest problem is lens. I really want this camera, though it requires a sharp lens to take advantage of it. I use this rule of thumb, the lens should cost around the same as the camera....
@EbrahimSaadawii9 жыл бұрын
Let's expand on the technical advantages/disadvantages of mirrorless VS. DSLRs and the ''but'' system. It's key. The first sentence is going to be an advantage for mirrorless and the second sentence after but it going to be anadvantage for DSLRs -Mirrorless cameras are smallerand ligher BUT many like bigger heavier camera for balance and feel and stability, bigger buttons/dials -Mirrorless caneras EVFs show WB/Peaking BUT OVF has no lag and in a real-world view through the optical lens. -Mirroless cameras have smaller lenses, BUT they have slower apertures, significantly less line-up and more cost. -Mirroless cameras have smaller/easier to carry power BUT draw more power and don't last as long as DSLRs at all -Mirrorless cameras have large AF coverage BUT not even nearly as reliable and fast as high-end DSLRs (7DII/1Dx) for focus tracking. -Mirroless cameras can use all lenses with adapters and cheap manual glassnBUT they can't use cheap and huge line-ups of SLR lenses with full native support (AF/IS/VR/EXIF/IRIS) even with the latest most advanced adapters there are lots of failures, plus need an adapter which us extra cost and a potential point of failure. -Mirrorless cameras are easier to travel with BUT they're nowhere near as rugged and environment resistant as DSLRs, not even close to the bricks that survive fire (7D/1Dx/D7100 etc) -Mirroless cameras have small affordable one slot media BUT no dual set-up for internal backup which is essential for most professional photographers. -Mirrorless cameras are stealthier, BUT DSLRs look more impressive for clients. Don't under-estimate this point if you're a marketing aware person. Mirrorless cameras are much more modern electronic devices with the advantages that come with that (apps/peaking/wifi/silence) BUT DSLRs are more mechanical and MUCH cheaper to repair if something fails. Mirrorless cameras have an absolutely gorgeous option for a small FF, BUT DSLRs have an option for a 12fps FF Metal brick with higher end AF and dual media and OVF so the only choice for FF sports/journalism/news/heavy environments Mirrorless cameras have higher resolution video 4K BUT DSLRs are agreed upon having better colours of skin/easier gradeability in video mode. Now there are advatnages at both systems that have not ''buts'', they simply exist in one and not the other and are clear advantages. Mirrorless cameras have manual focus assist, Mirroless cameras have Silent E-shutter modes, Mirroless cameras have a viewfinder for video shooting, Mirroless cameras have higher video frame rates for slo-mo, Mirroless cameras have LOG video gammas Mirrorless cameras have modern apps ability for buying features (even for future) Mirroless cameras have more articulated screens in general while ''most'' DSLRs are fixed DSLRs have more native selection of lenses at low cost and speed DSLRs have faster AF tracking/framerates/buffers for shooting sports DSLRs have much longer battery lifes/rates DSLRs have much more rugged and environment resistent bodies/lenses DSLRs have the only usable video AF solution in the world (Canon) DSLRs have higher conectivity and software compatability for high-end studio tethetred shooting, DSLRs have an enormous number for Flashes/speedlights DSLRs have a gigantic number of thrid party accessories like battery grips, batteries, flashes, DSLRs are virtually the only format ''available'' in mass amounts and cheap prices in third-world countries with absolute lack of any mirrorless penetration around the globe aside for UK/USA Now let's make some ''generalization'' comparisons, meaning features/qualities that are ''more'' available on one system while only available on a very limited scale on the other system offerings: -Mirrorless cameras mostly have m43s size sensors, with minimum of 1" sensors and maximum of FF sensors on one model, while DSLR have mostly APS-C sensors as minimum and medium format as maximum in various models, much much more larger sensor models (FF and APS-C and MF) -DSLRs have uncompressed 14bit raw files vs compressed on many mirroless cameras (which alone can diqualify FF mirroless at all for most professional shooters resulting in the fact that there are no FF options at all that are viable) -DSLRs mostly have two LCDs, while most Mirroless have one on the back. -Mirroless cameras mostly have better connectivity to web/wifi/smartphones while DSLRs are mostly isolated Even in the video field where Mirrorless seems to be the ultimate better options, there are benefits both ways, mirroless having EVF, LOG, 4K resolution, BUT DSLRs having the only video autofocus system in the world and agreed on upon having better skin tones/colours and easier gradeability. So if you specifically need AF, specifically want great colours out of the card, a DSLR is a better option EVEN for video! While if you want higher resolution, LOG gamma, EVF, then mirrorless is a better option for video. You choose the system and the model that offers the advantages you need and has the disadvantges you don't care about. That's all it is. It's easy to understand. If we compare specific cameras like these, there is absolutely no ultimate better solution for everybody, not even close, benefits both ways -T6s/D5500 vs A6000/a5100/M4s XT-1, G7, -6D/D610 vs A7 and A7II -D810/5Ds vs A7r and a7rII -1Dx vs what? GH4 as the fastest maybe. -MF SLR vs what, A7rII maybe as highest res, and sen. size -1DC/5DIIIRaw vs A7s Conclusion, benefits both ways, if you think one of these comparisons is ultimately better for everyone and everything than the other, you have NO understanding or experience in ANY way about cameras and users of the market. And that's not something you as a photographer should be ashamed of, you don't need to be a camera market expert, that's for people like us who recommend camera for many different buyers every day and are deep into the market aspect of it rather than a creative photographer shooting a specific genre where you'll have a limited system you're using that's best for you. This is the best sum up I can give about mirroless vs DSLRs subjectively.

Just a side note, it might be worth adding a little caption saying that there is a lossless raw option now. If you buy the camera now it comes with firmware version 3.0.0 which has that option, and if you bought it on release you can upgrade the firmware and get the option.
@13druid138 жыл бұрын
Not lossless, uncompressed actually. Lossless is compressed RAW while Sony now offers uncompressed RAW.
@ShiroKage0098 жыл бұрын
13druid13 They compression was lossy, which is why it's lossless now.
@13druid138 жыл бұрын
ShiroiKage009 Both lossy and lossless are compressed formats. While technically, yes, uncompressed RAW is lossless, lossless RAW usually refers to a compressed format that supposedly retains all of the original RAW data but in a smaller compressed form, like a zip file. Companies like Canon, Nikon even Adobe DNG use lossless compressed formats. Sony's compression was always lossy which is why people complained about it and one of the reasons they now offer uncompressed RAW. Here's a couple of articles that go into more depth en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lossless_compression . www.dpreview.com/forums/post/41033995
@ShiroKage0098 жыл бұрын
13druid13 Oh yeah, I understand. That's why I said it's lossy compression. It's kind of like FLAC vs MP3, where the first is lossless compression while the second other is lossy compression. Sony's old thing, with the 12+2 or whatever it was, was lossy. Now it's lossless, compressed or not.
@13druid138 жыл бұрын
I think I understand what you mean, but unless I'm reading what you wrote wrong, I don't think you understand what Sony is actually offering, no offense meant. When you say, "Now it's lossless, compressed or not", that's not true. Sony still offers lossy compression and does not offer a lossless compressed format like Canon, etc. does. Sony has two RAW formats now, one is compressed (11+7 bit lossy not lossless) and the other is uncompressed (lossless is a given as there is no compression). Now if you're saying lossless can refer to both compressed and uncompressed then yes, I agree with you. Although 90% of the time when you hear the term lossless it refers to a compression method. Which is why what you wrote in the beginning was confusing to me when you just said lossless.

I'm really impressed at the update speed of Sony cameras which is why I will be holding out for the A7s II. I don't need 40+ megapixels, I just really want that low light capability. Problem is I hear the focus speeds on the A7s are slow and the A7r II really improved them so hopefully the A7s II will bring all the things we love about A7r II minus the massive megapixels to it's new and improved body... plus maybe a decent e mount zoom lens. *There are no f/2.8 e mount zooms and this disappoints me so much*
@KurniaLim9 жыл бұрын
OneUpdateataTime IMHO, when someone want to be at the top position they will keep pushing just like Sony. The problem come when they're on top and thinking no one can take them down, I hope sony become only 2nd not the 1st so they keep pushing technology..

The review is amazing but it could've been better. the rolling shutter for pictures is avoidable with full mechanical shutter mode. Sharpness of the 4K video could be a product of the lens, but it should've been highlighted that it's an achievement that it is recorded internally, unlike the a7S. Moreover, in body steady-shot has the amazing advantage of being active with fast lenses (f1.8 and faster) which don't usually come with stabilization + it can be activated with adapted prime/manual lenses, like leica lenses!

Kai, if you are still in London, I want to take you out for a drink... That was a good review. Unfortunately there is lot of difference in price between A7ii and A7rii, hence got the A7ii now. @giutubospatubo15469 жыл бұрын
I did not buy the A7RII because of the lack of aspect ratios alternatives (only 16:9 and 3:2). I use 1:1 and 4:3 a lot!, as well as 16:9. And it's not a matter of just cropping in post, but rather of composing while shooting using the ratio you want. It make a big difference. I wonder why Sony omitted this in such an expensive camera. It would be so simple to add.

I had spent months looking over reviews, figuring out which review site was sponsored and effectively biased, wading through the marketing and reading forum post upon forum post to ultimately wind up with this camera. I'm not even remotely rich. There's a mortgage, bills, debts to the eyeballs and deeply rooted issues with financing priorities - but alas. I've always been a DSLR man and shrugged at the mirror-less options until fairly recently. Let me tell any prospective buyers out there that this camera is a keeper, likely for life. It's worth every bloody penny and you will not be disappointed. The minor set backs are utterly dwarfed by it's pros.
