Technically it's 1.7 stops (5 clicks of a 1/3 stop of light on the ISO wheel), but yeah, that's how they've implemented it in the a7R V.

Great video! Would setting up an auto iso limitation of 800-12800 work for PP8 as a way to hand over some exposure decisions to the camera, or would that cause a variable noise floor in post that would be a headache to deal with?
@mandobaron6 ай бұрын
Ok, interesting update. I did my own tests on the A7CR (I was assuming it would be the same a the A7R5, but my cleanest ISOs are 800 and 3200. I'm also curious about the dynamic range drop-off below base ISO 800. In the same way that 12800 can be "usable" in terms of noise, what would be "usable" in terms of picture quality and dynamic range below 800?
@andrewsaraceni6 ай бұрын
@@mandobaron I would still want manual control of ISO and be inclined to stick to 800 and 2500, vs. an Auto ISO range, as your results/mileage may vary with in-between values depending on the shooting situation, lighting, etc.

Great video Andrew! im planning on buying a new sony camera. I work with both video and photo and i'm struggling between the A7RV and the A7IV. I really want the A7RV but the only thing that is stopping me from making the decision is not knowing if it has the dual ISO 12800 on video mode. Something that i love of the A7IV and A7S3 its the exposure without noise that i can get with the 12800 ISO in PP8 slog3. Does the Sony A7RV has the same feature in video mode PP8 ISO12800? thx!!!
@andrewsaraceni6 ай бұрын
Thanks! Only the a7S III/FX3 has the dual ISO at 12800. Both the a7IV and a7R V have it as well, but at a lower dual value (in S-Log3, 2500 for the a7R V, and 3200 for the a7 IV). I have a video that talks about the a7 IV's dual ISO: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fICto41nab9qg9E

@@andrewsaraceni hi! In my a7rV, 2th value - 3200 if i use slog-3. On 2500 iso i have a more noise than at 3200. Why all say a 2500 2th number?
@andrewsaraceni2 ай бұрын
@@NataliyaStepanova-e9z I would double check you're using S-Log3/PP8 - 2500 is the 2nd dual (high) ISO for that PP. But 3200 might not be far off noise-performance wise compared to 2500 anyway.

How about shooting the night sky with A7RV? I had a lot of trouble trying to catch the Northern Lights on camera with A7RV, I'm not a pro, but I've got too much noise in it as I had to raise the ISO to very high values. Is there any tip or setting that may perform it better? I couldn't even remove to a fair level in post. :) Again, I'm not a pro, just knowing my camera better now.
@andrewsaraceni11 ай бұрын
I would aim for a more shallow depth of field (e.g. f/2.8 or below), and try to do a longer exposure with a tripod or monopod to use a slower shutter speed.

Thanks@@andrewsaraceni , I use 14mm f/1.8, I'm getting the new sigma 14mm f/1.4 for next month as I read wonderful things about it. If i bring the shutter speed too slow it looks like I was shooting with an old Nokia phone. lol

I always thought a lower ISO is always better. So you're saying it's better to use these base ISO values like 800 in SLog-3 instead of something like 100 even if there is plenty of light?
@andrewsaraceni7 ай бұрын
I would opt for shooting the Base ISO in S-Log3 (so yes, 800), but you can still get clean shots using the lower extended ISO range in many conditions.
@mfkhometheater77427 ай бұрын
@@andrewsaraceni Ok, thanks. So even in bright light, 800 should have lower noise than for example, 100. I never realized this but I'm not a professional photographer, not even an amateur photographer, just some idiot with a camera🙂 I'm going to be doing some storm chasing next month and this frequently puts you into low light conditions. I just got the A7RV but I also have an A7SIII so I'm thinking the best plan is to use the SIII for video and the RV for stills, both in SLog-3. I believe the SIII base ISO is 640 so I assume start with the 640 on SIII and 800 on the RV and move up the 3x+ when lower light requires it.
