Great video! Still helpful for me, two years later. Just purchased this over the new Sony a7 iv... Maybe I will regret it? Not sure. I'm just a photographer, very little video work. As a backpacker, I mainly do landscapes. One of the biggest selling points on this one for me, even being 2 years old, is the fact that the 60 MP sensor allows me to get around 26 MP images in the crop mode using APS-C lenses (I am upgrading from a 6*** series, so I already have a nice collection of lenses). This allows me to take advantage of the smaller, typically cheaper, lenses with fantastic picture quality -- but I can still use a FE lens to get the 60!

Thanks! So for what you are shooting, sounds like you made the best decision. The A7IV does have a few new things but the main advantage is video and it does have some disadvantages such as the lower resolution screen and viewfinder. Plus the APSC mode is better in the RIV. Enjoy!!!

Great review! However; Compressed RAW doesn't mean 12bit, only when you're shooting continuous as well. Also Sony's compressed RAW is extremely close to being lossless. Sony engineers originally didn't plan to include uncompressed because they built the compression to not be noticeable. I have never seen a difference between the two. Given how much people keep complaining about this I don't know why they don't just switch to lossless, but if you're going to mention it you should try to show an example of where you think it's noticeable. The 14bit and 12bit issue is noticeable but I'd be willing to bet that the compression is not detectable for 99.9% of photographers during the entire life of the camera.

One change I've made to my workflow for the a7RIV is to use Adobe DNG converter to take files from the SD card and convert them into lossless DNG. You get a very good file size reduction (down to 60 GB or so) without any loss in bit depth or data. It doesn't help you with SD cards filling up, but does help with the file sizes on your hard drive (and cloud back-up). For out-takes, I convert them to DNG lossy for a further big reduction in file size. These files are still very usable. I disagree with one point that you made. The autofocus system on the a7RIV IMHO is a major upgrade from the a7RII for example. The tracking feature means that you can pick a subject (e.g. a model) and track them relentlessly as they change their poses. You really have trouble doing that with an older Sony camera. In my practice, I shoot a lot of musicians and can track them as they move about on stage even in low light. It's nothing short of amazing.
@learningcameras5 жыл бұрын
Nice! So I do agree that it is a major update from the A7RII with AF...but so would the A7RIII since that's where 90% of the AF improvements came from which was more my point. Again, freaking amazing AF system but the big update was in the A7III/A7RIII series...especially after they got additional firmware updates with full time eye AF and animal AF

Nice review. I have an A7RII and I'm need of an upgrade. Biggest complaints with the A7RIIi is the buffer and autofocus. Wasn't a major issue until I started to shoot some birds and wildlife with my recent 100-400GM plus 1.4x TC. I also have the Sony 16-35 F4 Zeiss, 24-105 F4, 70-200 F4 and 50 1.8. Considering getting an A7RIII and selling my A7RII. I know the focusing is better with it just not sure if I should consider the A7R instead or even an A9 and maybe keep the A7RII. Thoughts?
@learningcameras4 жыл бұрын
So the RIV will be a huge step up with AF and a slight step up with buffering when you use UHSII fast cards. The biggest issue for buffering is that the camera is 61MP which is HUGE. Definitely if you get it, use compressed RAW and that will help. Will be virtually no difference in quality for you and still give you plenty of room to crop. The main advantage to the A9 will be if you want to shoot electronic shutter (silent shutter) in which case it is absolutely worth it to get the A9. But if you don't mind the mechanical shutter, the RIV is amazing and on a huge sale bhpho.to/3jKNxgt

Hi Dan. Coming from an A7R2. In Dec 2021, if you could buy a new A7R3a for $2000 or the A7R4a for $2600 which one would you buy? I wanted to get the A7RIV for tracking birds but the reality is I would only do that sometimes and would most likely use it for landscapes, portraits and slow moving wildlife and perched birds. I think that shooting BIF would have to be done with a used A9, maybe the new A7 IV or the A1 which is too expensive. Thoughts?
@learningcameras3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Tough choice. I'd say that if the A7RIVa was only $500 more, I'd probably jump on that since I'm sure you could also resell it for $500 more than the A7RIIIa thus getting the money back. The A7RIVa has a great AF system so is fully capable of BIF but the high MP count means slower frame rates than something like an A9 as well as worse buffer performance. I really wish Sony had a Small RAW and Medium RAW option like Canon & Nikon for this exact reason. The A7IV suffers some of the same problems though with poor buffer performance unless you are using CFexpress cards.

@learningcameras4 жыл бұрын
The Tamron 28-75 is definitely pretty sharp especially in the center so I wouldn't worry too much about the quality there. Certainly 61MP pushes the limits of any lens though and the newer Sony GM lenses are made to resolve higher resolution. That said the Tamron is cheaper and lighter which in many cases is more important than slightly more detail only visible if you zoom in to 300% lol

The only negative observation (not criticism, as I was already aware of the potential issue) I have with respect to the A7R4, is that it is rubbish at distance shots where the ISO value is greater than 2500. For me, this is a minor issue and I just don't bother taking such shots now I have tested it out in such a scenario with my 200 - 600mm. It is an outstanding camera in good light or when using flash. I programmed the function ring of the Sony 600mm 4.0 GM to switch between Full Frame (61MP) and APS-C Mode (27MP) delivering then a FOV of 900mm. Simply super cool, especially as the Autofocus Performance of the Sony A7R4 is really, really good. It is not as good as the Sony A9 II, especially not when it comes to performance of the Lock-On Cont. Tracking Mode. But it is not so far away. Well done, Sony. Should you upgrade from the Sony A7R? with low light, how do the files look downsampled? I still find my A7Rii files looking more detailed vs the A7III or A7S if the files are made to 24 or 12mp respectively. that's up to 6400 ISO. also, there's more dynamic range and colour depth in most situations. held an A7Riv the other day and the grip for my small hands is so much better. previously using l-plates to help ergonomics this latest model seems to not need one and ends up being lighter weight to the A7Rii with a metal plate.
@learningcameras5 жыл бұрын
For the high ISO tests, I downsampled the A7RIV to 24MP to match the A7III which in theory helps the A7RIV. Just because I can't imagine anyone ever using a full 61mp image at 12,800 ISO in the real world lol.

@@stevemckenzie4731 It's about how cameras capture light. A big bucket catches more water than a small bucket in the rain. @@learningcameras But in crop mode the portion of the sensor capturing the image requires less light compared to the light required to record a 61mpx image .. Yep, will have to check. Haven't taken my IV out of the box yet. The skies in eastern Australia have been plagued by smoke for what seems like an eternity and you can only shoot so many hazy brown sunsets. Big rains on the way today so that will help with the fires (but not so much the photography).

Really curious where those videos in the fields were shot. That location is gorgeous.

Hi great video! I admit im struggling myself between the sony a7r3 and a7r4 Im quite the beginner but it is my dream to get one of those professional camera I think the a7riv would be really great for landscape shooting since i really do love to do it but im also looking for versatility so im afraid about the noise side of things i dont know if i would be better with the a7r3 in that regard or if i should just look for something to reduce noise on the picture cause were not gonna lie the option on the a7r4 are pretty fantastic :) i really would like your advice on this ^^

Thanks so much!!! So sure, the A7RIV is technically better but in all reality, the differences in actual quality wouldn't be noticeable in real life as I pointed out in some of the side by side tests. Also the improvements with video or autofocus also don't make a massive difference for landscape work. So yes, it is technically better but I would wait for an awesome sale on the A7RIII and get that instead. If you have any extra $, spend it on glass and I'm sure there will be an A7RV out in 2 years with even more improvements and who knows, by that time you might be WAY more than a beginner! B&H is giving away some extras right now with an A7RIII purchase: bhpho.to/2vyTDNJ

As a landscape and wildlife photographer who owns this camera, I couldn’t recommend it for either of those. The file sizes are just too massive and having the ability to shoot multiple shots to get the right frame is absolutely essential IMO.

real-time AF tracking is much more useful and is missing in A7iii and A7Riii

The lens you had on the A7Riv was it the 24-105?
@learningcameras5 жыл бұрын
24-70 F2.8 GM actually

@@learningcameras That make sense, to me the area around the G did't look red so I thought it must be the 24-105.

I have been an 7r user since I first shifted to the sony system. I upgraded to the r2 & got the a6500 to complement for video & longer focal lengths. I sold both to upgrade to the R4 - one lightweight body which gives me sensor zoom - much more ergonomic & more possibilities for reframing/multiple framing & recomposing in post processing. For any visual work that requires detail & to raise the threshold of the eye - this camera is groundbreaking. Personally since I have small hands the grip makes no difference but I am glad that they kept the lightweight design which gives even more customization of dials. Both AF & MF work better & the new EVF is a real benefit. The closest ff rival is panasonic which is over 1100gms. Medium format cameras are far more cumbersome to use for travel etc. Further with lightweight prime lenses this camera is relatively a breeze to work with. The sensor can bring out even more from a lens - particularly if one understands its properties. This goes too for both modern budget lenses & some of the old jewels made from film cameras. Video quality has improved too. It is amazing what the R4 gives now in the context of the original R not that long ago.

Can the α7RIV record straight to an external SSD?
@learningcameras4 жыл бұрын
No, you would need to use a recorder like the Ninja V and go HDMI out of the camera for external video recording
