Couple of things I forgot to mention, the A7RIV mechanical shutter is also WAY quieter and I don’t even feel I need silent with it. Also the red focus dot is awesome... carry on

I have this camera and I kept hearing about how it wouldnt be good in low light. When coupled with the 85 G Master I have been simply blown away by the low light capability of this camera. Also, the real time tracking in photo AND VIDEO is an absolute cheat code!! Great video man.

I shot old school Sony A mount with Minolta glass before. I patiently waited for years for there to be a truly epic upgrade before I switched to E mount ecosystem. I pulled the trigger with the Riv this year and have been loving it. That Sigma 35 1.2 was the lens I first purchased with the camera 😉

I am totally obsessed with my A7RIV. The only slow down I’ve seen in post using my iMac is dropping files onto my hard drives. Not a big deal.. wedding, home late, drop them, all done when I wake. No regrets here!

I've used quite a few cameras and I really think the a7riv is underrated because it was an incremental upgrade from the last A7riii. All things considered, I think it's the best camera in the world right now. After setting it up and getting all the custom buttons and dials right where I want them I've never experienced a camera that just gets out of our way the way this one does. The insane autofocus just means I nail virtually every single shot I take and I can think purely about composition and light- and that's really amazing. The dynamic range, resolution and colour from the resulting shots is just incredible.

Re: UHS-II cards, I've been using the ProGrade v60 cards for all my photo & video over the last year or so - absolutely no issues. They probably won't survive a run through the washing machine like the tough cards, but much cheaper. They do a v90 too but I don't see the point in them unless you were getting an a7Siii for 4K 120 etc 🤷‍♂️

Thank you for these videos! When I use my 35mm 1.2 with the A7Riv, I have issues using focus tracking at f1.2. It won't work in indoor and darker lighting. If I move it to f1.3 or higher, it is fine. I don't have the same issue using the lens on my A9ii. There might be something weird that Sigma needs to figure out.

Well done Chris. I sold my R3 and got R4 in August. The feel in the hand, the resolution, the insane autofocus, and 10 frames shotgun, make it the best still image shooting machine in the world, far better than Canon R5. For Landscape shooters and wedding photographers who own the R3. I strongly suggest the upgrade. Trust me, it's way more than the extra resolution. However, the high ISO performance is just pathetic. I tried bird shooting and when ISO is above 3200, there is so much noise. Thus I am thinking about getting an A9 II. Maybe it's time to sell one of my kidneys.
@blazeboy777
@blazeboy777 3 жыл бұрын
ah I prefer R5 over R4. Feel in a hand canon is better, Image is close, iso is much better, autofocus r5 is like a9ii, 10 frames vs 12 :D Did you even try R5 ?

@@blazeboy777 Did you even try A9ii !!?? Haha I have the R5 and R6 combo for wedding/ love them both but the R5 is out of this world !!! However it doesnt comes that close to the af performance of the A9ii maybe 65 -70 % ... but thats allready perfect in my book ! ( I have the A9ii for sport / wildlife..)
@blazeboy777
@blazeboy777 3 жыл бұрын
@@afrank3029 ah then we both shoot both systems :D yes, I feel like sony is better for tracking many things but not when it comes to AF to faces/eyes. While it feels faster with Sony in my experience is that Sony likes to slightly miss focus and Canon is always on point. Maybe it was my mistake as I had my sony set up to release priority and canon always on focus priority. Then it depends on what glass you use. For wildlife, I would pick a9ii over any Canon atm. Otherwise, I own a9 (which I guess is like a9ii in focusing) and I shoot with r6 daily as I bought it while waiting for my r5 which I canceled after a month with r6 as for me is enough. Now I am waiting for a1 :)
@blazeboy777
@blazeboy777 3 жыл бұрын
@@afrank3029 Also I find for fine focusing canon better than a9, afc close focusing on objects. as sony has bigger focus points. For sports, street, outside of portraits, details shots (wedding like), I find sony a way better AF system. I love on my Canon that with 50mm 1.2 at 1.2 I can shoot with my eyes closed and 19 out 20 photos will be tack sharp on an iris if I am not paying attention :D
@blazeboy777
@blazeboy777 3 жыл бұрын
@@afrank3029 when it comes to a7rIV which was said about it focuses as good as a9 and a9ii it's a total lie... it's 50% of a9 if r6 and r5 are 70% I actually miss with that camera compared to r6. Good camera but nothing to brag about in AF.

Thank you Chris for this great review. I also do weddings and I hesitate a lot with the A9 (I have an A73) because I do not know what to do with 61m of pixels, it seems that the A7RIV has sometimes failed in AF so the sensor is precise . Do you never have that kind of problem with it?

Hi Chris, I'm loving sifting through your vids on here. They're really informative and far better than anything over on the BBC. I realise this video is 2 years old but I just wanted to ask you for some advice. I'm currently torn between buying the Sony A7R4 (61mp) or the Sony A74 (33mp). I'm predominantly a stills shooter and mainly photograph weddings and portraits. I'm leaning towards the A7R4 mainly because of the 61mp as I like to print large. However, I'm just wondering what kind of spec I would require on a new iMac! I'm looking at upgrading my old iMac to the iMac M1 i9 16GB and just wondered if you think that this would be enough spec to cope with the A7R4's 61mp files?
@youuuuuuuuuuutube

You're right about the IQ being better because of the higher resolution, after downsizing back to 24MP. The thing is that 24MP on the A7iii for example, is 24 with a Bayer filter, so its color resolution is much lower (12MP of green, 6MP of red and 6MP of blue). But when you resize the 60MP to 24, you get 24MP of green + 15MP of red + 15MP of blue, so, it's almost RGB444, which would be obtained if you resize to 15MP (half the x and y resolution => 1/4th of 60).

The high+ shooting speed is just showing you the previous photo in place of the blackout. So it’s not good for any action as it’s hard to keep the subject in frame as desired. But I believe the canon r5 does this too.

As a mainly stills shooter who doesn’t need lots of pixels and produced campaigns for big clients with a canon 1dx / 2 then I feel the A9ll would be best for me, presume that has the same real time tracking and also prefer the deeper grip and more tactile buttons on the version 2... I didn't think jet another 7R4 review could be useful or even pleasent, after so many, and such as from Dustin Abbott, and others. Jet this review, and sharing(!) attitude, it did bring me jet another pleasent and usefull insights. Very nice. Personally I (need to) hang onto my beliefs that my R3 with two R2 serve me in average better for my preferred at lower-light work (and with somewhat less soon diffraction kicking in, "some" better image, and I'm not that often that much reframing in post). Sure I would for some works not refuse it and it's tough to resist to better ergonomics and then some. However, rather than 60 mio, I would rather stress for and gain from much less shutterdelay, which some say could be an A9 3 with aprox 40 mio pixels - if that was to come - or a A7R 3.5 :-) - than that would totally unsettle my current stand. BTW, just an idea : How about considering switching batteries among bodies half way through a wedding if one bof, is clearly being drained more. ;-) ( I'm left a bit curious what would have happened with the in focus red flowers had You let them temporarily get partially covered by the foreground leaf...)

Chris, hope you're doin good and sorry for the long winded response. In your opinion what would Sony need to do to have a " medium " Raw setting? is it hardware or software related? If its software then Sony needs to get on it! this feature would sell a lot more r4s. Also do you have any comparison shots 73 vs r3 vs r4 when it coms to high iso, low light noise and quality? You mentioned that compressing the r4 image can actually make it sharper than an A73 of the same size. Does this process also improve/reduce noise from high iso images. I've seen other posts of photographers complaining that hi iso performance makes it a deal breaker and just go for the r3. Your video makes it sound like its not such a big deal. Thanks FW

When I take a dark shot with sensor cap on ISO 800 SS 1:100 second, I can see white dots which are noise. When increasing ISO over 1000, the noise gets drastically worse. Hey Chris - Always enjoy your videos. You are a key reason I switched over to Sony. Thanks for all the info you share. With that said, I had a question. I currently have a Sony A7rIV on loan from Sony and I've noticed that the camera tends to get very unreliable with autofocus when in low light situation. Especially with third party lenses like Tamron and Sigma. If I'm above maybe 1600 ISO, autofocus seems to be quick and reliable however when I shoot in lower light settings greater than 1600 ISO, my shutter hesitates and the lens starts hunting. Some lenses more than others. I was curious if you run into any of that? The best way to describe it is that the shutter lags, and it feels like it's in focus priority, and since it has a hard time catching focus in low light, it refuses to let me fire the shot, and while that's going on, the lens starts hunting, even when I have a static subject. This doesn't happen at all with my A7rIII or A7III. Have you run into this at all?

@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer Thanks Chris! Some follow up; wondering if you might be able to do a quick demo on your workflow with Rawsie; do you shoot uncompressed or compressed then convert in Rawsie; and lastly; do you still archive your ARW file in addition to DNG?

Yeah man. I think the A7III is 6000px natively anyways.

Hey Chris, you mentioned Rawsie... I'm currently using the integrated tool inside Lightroom for converting RAW to Lossy DNG for my A7R3 and file size go from around 40mb to roughly 15mb. (I honesty didn't find great difference in quality). Can you tell me if Rawsie is able to compress them even more, or if it's only a matter of very fine quality. Many thanks!
@ChrisTurnerPhotographer

Hey. Yeah it compresses it more with no loss at all

I currently own the A7III and it drives me crazy that my portraits aren't super sharp. I have the 24 1.4G,135 1.8G and the 85 1.8. Will the upgrade to the R4 give me what I want without so much editing in post?

I have a7rII and had a7i before and I can tell you that sharpness from Rii with Sony 85 1.8 is so incredible at low ISO. Much better than those from 7i . Same with 20mm G. But I have hard times choosing right camera and lens for wedding. I want to keep my Rii just for travelling and portraits, and I am thinking about a9 or a7IV, but I am afraid that while it offers much better focusing, it doesnt have that much mpx for crop. Something tells me RIV is the right thing for me but can it handle weddings same as those mentioned before, and isnt it overkill ... Also no blackout on A9 is amazing, it is so hard to decide .... :D

I love shooting wide open with my a7rIV but I feel like when I do have multiple people I'm losing some people. How are you getting such clear pics shooting at 1.2 with MULTIPLE people. Is it just cause they're all on the same focal plane?!

@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer Thankfully mine fixes itself automatically within a second or two, but it has made me miss a few shots. In most lenses this would be a dealbreaker for me, but the performance the other 99.9% of the time is too good to pass up. I'm excited for the rumoured 35GM coming next year.
