I liked my first a7S3 so much (preordered) I bought a second a7S3 3 months later. Two years after the first a7S3 I bought a THIRD a7S3 despite having a sony A1 for 9 months which made me realized how good the a7S3 is for video. Side by side comparison between a7S3 and a1 (on identical S-cinetone or Slog3) shows that if you take out sharpness of the SONY a1 at 8K30, the a7S3 has much better dynamic range and colors.

Yah, last camera I need as I HAD TO SEND IT BACK in after 2 months of owning it. Exposure dial and settings stopped working. Lucky Sony Canada allowed it to be sent in. Now I'm waiting. Lucky it wasn;t a client shoot when it malfunctioned. Good luck everyone.

Nice content. I have the free version of Resolve and I don't have issues editing my 10 bit footage. Does the free version downscale the 10 bit footage to 8 bit when you render the video?

Hey bro. Awesome video. Do all the other colour profiles hold up just as well in low light beyond iso 12800, eg: up to 100,000 etc, or must one always be in s-log3 to benefit from the low light performance? I would love to see some comparisons. Almost about to pull the trigger, but I do a lot of live streaming at night in the dark so I need a run and gun usable profile that works without colour grading, as there is no post with live, but I do need the best low light performance. Perhaps hlg or s-cinetone might work?

Sorry about the late reply. I'm not sure, I always stay in either 640 OR 12800. I'll go a little above but nothing too crazy, I'd rather light the situation better in that case. As far as picture profiles you might be able to crank a little extra out of them but there's no picture profiles that are going to be way better in low light. It's not really what they're designed for. They're more for expanding dynamic range and control in color correction. I hope this helps!

@@smatruk not sure if you've found this out already but if you use OBS to stream you can apply a LUT as a filter so you could stream with S-Log3 and output a nice image. Unsure about other streaming software. An external monitor like the Ninja V can also output a LUTted image if you want to keep spending money.

I had a7siii and it was amazing. Only thing was the megapixel. Tried in wedding and action and if you try to see a bit of details they're pixelated. It's an amazing low light video camera and also no rolling shutter on it. But I had to switch to a7iv because of the MP. Everything else was perfect on a7siii.

Hi Sam great video I'm in need of some help..... I just broughtba sony zve10 for youtube and its great on a tripod but soon as I go hand held for cinematic video it's so jumpy is the only solution a gimble or would you recommend a different camera I can up my budget ?

For that specific camera I'd take a look at the rs3 mini from DJI or the zhiyun M3 both are tiny and good for smaller cameras like that. If you can afford a bigger camera that's always my recommendation but I understand budgets can be tight. Let me know if there's anything else I can help with. Just remember before you buy anything it's good to know what lenses/accessories you're going to plan on using with it. It's a bad idea to just look at one thing at a time

The innitial shots were done with the Sony 90mm F2.8 Macro on the A7iii on a tripod, but the secret was the A7siii (the subject) was on a gimbal to get the rotation effect. I hope this helps. I've actually been thinking about inventing like a "product" gimbal where you could rotate whatever subject you want with clamps and motorized arms. That'd be RAD

Hard to go backwards in photo resolution. Especially for us pixel peepers. S line is for videos and casual photos. Clients are limited in print sizes from a 12mp file. Great photos, except for that!

Eh, the thing is, there's always some random cutbacks on features in these cameras. The a74 should certainly be able to do full frame 4k60 but they just don't allow it to for no reason because they want you to buy the more expensive cameras for that. Money and greed fuel everything, even this.

The fx3 does look better but my reasoning behind getting the s3 was the viewfinder and the lack of a fan/weather sealing. I never have it overheat and it seems silly to miss out on a viewfinder for a tally light

Sam, you are funny as hell, "I get a rod every time I see the Camera". Sam you are so right, I have also used the A7SIII for photos sometimes, especially in hybrid situations and it is like you said, unless you are blowing the photos up and your composition sucks or you are trying to use it for Landscape, bird photography or wild life photography, it is fine and I own a A7IV, A7RIII and A9. Most people on the planet don't need more than 12 megapixels, they might want it, but they don't need it. I wouldn't seek an A7SIII out exclusively at 3499 for photography only, it is more video focused, but it can hold its own when called upon. It is a stop gap for me until I can find a fx6 and I got it at $2730.00 opened box mint condition at BestBuy, so $230.00 over the price of my A7IV. Also, the Fx3's XLR handle works just great on the A7SII and A7IV with the small rig cage and extension handle. The same thing that makes the A7SIII, a great video camera, makes it a great photo camera and that is its ability to gather light with those big photo sites, which drives down your ISO in low light situations. I have not had one person say, well that's only twelve megapixels. The Nikon D700 -12mp and the D4/D4s-16mp are still being used by pros without complaint from them or their clients. The megapixel thing is way overblown and anything used on social media won't be at full resolution anyway. Most people don't print anymore.

Its only the young kids complaining about 12mp, I learned photography on my uncles nikon D1X, that thing had what 4 or 5mp? His earlier D1 model had 2mp i think. He eventually let me have it and i used it until 07'/08' when i got a nikon d40x with 10mp, then the d600 with the MASSIVE 24mp. So on and so on, anyway to cut it short, 12mp is PLENTY. A billboard only needs around 4 - 6mp.

XAVC-HS is definitely NOT the worst quality, it is an H.265 codec, which makes it much more compression efficient than H.264, but it is more difficult to edit. Two video files one H.264 and one H.265 with the same bitrate, the H.265 is much better in terms of picture quality (in theory at least).
