Initially i was a bit struggling with the sony colours while first using it , bcus of the weird yellowish green tint it has on the skin tones, but as i am using it more i am now learning to get the proper colours, and one lifesaver to me was the phantom luts, it really helped to get the colour right, specially giving that beautiful pinkish ARRI like skin tones. yes .. really would hv hoped they could hv given the sensor covering shutter with it like the a74. But overall this camera produses amazing image quality .. i describe it as “ romantic “ .. the a7s3 image. Best camera fr video no doubt even in 2022. . One question .. do u add some extra sharpness in the videos in the post ?

Tom, one of the many wonderful things you do in your videos is provide common-sense explanations in a friendly, self-deprecating manner. You know your audience, whom I'm guessing are beginner to semi-prosumer level creators. You help anticipate issues that, while likely intuitive for big-time creators, can be incredibly frustrating to those without the benefit of experience based on mistakes. One of the most challenging aspects of content creation, IMHO, is overcoming the learning curve. Tech creators, those who review the latest and greatest cameras, peripherals, APPS, etc., sometimes forget to address what might be seen as basics. It's probably not terribly interesting going over recommended sound levels or preset suggestions for FCP; but, that really helps with the workflow and quality of the materials. For example, your mention of the SD cards you use in the Sony A7/FX review was incredibly helpful. As a suggestion, you may want to do some "basics" videos answering things like, "Do I need 300 mb and 128GB V90 or is 150 mb/s OK?" "If I shoot in XAVC S 4K, what type of card do I need? and why?" "What cable should I use if I have a micro-HDMI port out of the camera? Do I need USB C? And why are some USBs purple or blue?" It's maddening to get all the equipment, only to have it not work because of something stupid like having the wrong cable or memory card. Again, your content is absolutely amazing. I watch you and Caleb (DSLR Shooter) and Make Art Now on a daily basis. Love the puns BTW.

two things you didn't mention, I think: The viewfinder is the best in the business. Very, very high resolution. Almost making up for the mediocre LCD. The other thing that few mention but that really matters to some, is the 1080p HD quality on the A7Siii is the best there is on a camera in this price range. Comparing it to the A7iv and be amazed. I used 1080p all the time for long talking head stuff, and it is as good as the 4k, if you have no need to crop, or very little need.

That's interesting- I won't lie, I've never even used 1080 on the camera. I wanted full frame 4K so I didn't even think of testing it 😬 But knowing it's that good is awesome, especially when recommending the camera to schools and organizations that might not be equipped for native 4K on everything.

You can't go wrong either way, honestly. Even though the a7IV is better for photos, the 12mp of the a7SIII is more than enough for socials. It really depends on how important 4K120/60 is to you. I think a training gym has a lot of cool opportunities for awesome slow motion clips, so I would personally go with the a7SIII (or even FX3).

@mattwruff2 жыл бұрын
So I have a strong opinion on this (buckle in): As a consultant, I tell NO ONE to buy the A7S iii, the reason is the FX3 is basically the same but it's the better camera. IF you need real photo (not just thumbnails) and can only buy 1 camera get the A74. If you can get two camera get the FX3 and A74. And it goes up from there but never the A7S iii. As you know I think audio is 60 to 65% of video and if you are spending this much you should be using XLR mics. MY Demo setup was a FX6 and a A74. FX6 are hard to find so I sold my to a friend who needed more but will probably get another in the future. BUT you are totally right on the firmware update process was a circus! Great Review Tom but as I have stated the A7S iii is not the camera to buy.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
I think the weather sealing and the EVF are definitely important benefits to the a7S3 and I'm really happy to have mine, but wow, for video especially I can't believe how much I love the FX3. I finally got to play with the FX6 when we were at B&H a few weeks ago and it was incredible. I have no real need for that camera, but I absolutely want it.
@jeffreythemeditator2 жыл бұрын
I had the FX3, and gave it up to get an A7Siii. The viewfinder is the main thing. It is the best viewfinder in the business, and for my work, I use the viewfinder all the time. Only the A1, I believe, shares this high-end viewfinder. The other factor, which Tom mentioned, is the use of dials rather than menus for changing modes. I didn't like that about the FX3. Using both an A7iv and an A7Siii is easy, because nearly everything is the same. The FX3 seemed full of compromises. I did like the front mounted recording button though. But nothing else!
@jeffreythemeditator2 жыл бұрын
One more thing: the XLR sound going into the camera, either from the FX3 top handle or the XLR-K3M unit for the A7Siii is sub par, if you are used to working with something like a Mixpre. After comparing the two, I returned my XLR-K3M, as it was disappointing, just like the audio of the FX3. I would advise people, and I think Philip Bloom agrees, to go for the A7Siii, not the FX3. Ha!
@mattwruff2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreythemeditator The customer I have all have mounted cameras with no operators so the viewfinder is useless. but if that is a requirement I get it. As far as the XLR I totally disagree. In more cases than not the sound is fed via Aux from the mixer but we have used the handle XLR many times with NO issues.

Sony has a webcam app that works pretty well, and the camera can also work without the app just by connecting via USB and changing a menu setting for the output. The reason for not getting the latter is that I already own an A7III which is still great for photography and it's one of my livestreaming cameras. Thanks for the kind words! Your question is exactly what I was struggling with when deciding to get the Sony last year. The Sigma MC11 adapter works really well, but it's not perfect. It will give you full autofocus with EF lenses in photo mode, but it will only have video autofocus with Sigma lenses (so that means you'll have to use manual focus with Canon lenses when shooting video). As far as I know this is the best adapter out there and it's also pretty inexpensive. I did decide to just go for it and get the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM lens when I bought my camera and even though I prefer the build quality/design of Canon's lenses, the Sony has been phenomenal. I've since gotten a few others and love them a lot.

Very nice overview. Thanks. It's difficult to tell exactly, but the FX3 on your front angle SEEMS to have fractionally better skin tones (colours and dynamic range) over the A74 side profile angle. This may be due to several things including slightly different camera settings or the grade. It could also be that the FX3's sensor is different and just a bit better! Worth checking out in your A74 review perhaps? Thanks again.

@HeathcliffBlair2 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck Sure. There's very little in it really, and I'm probably a bit over-sensitive to highlights etc having struggled a bit with Panasonic GH series dynamic ranges and IQ over the years! Cheers.

Love your content! For a set up of 2-3 cameras (primarily for KZbin, streaming and social media) what would your recommended ratio in regards to A7iv and A7Siii be?
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
They can both be excellent A cameras and the footage can be mixed very easily, so it really just depends on your budget and how much you think you’ll need the specific features of the a7S3.
@aabdullah932 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck Thanks, based on this I think the 7iv will do the trick… just seems like I gotta get the 4k/120 out of my head

Sony's updating process will give me nightmares forever. I love my A7iv, but wow, that was a half hour (after the hour it took to get to the update download) I'll never get back.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I still haven't gotten it to work. I've sunk over 2 hours into it and have tried on two separate computers. I was able to update the a7S3 firmware when I first got it last year, but that's my only success story.

SweetMother! monster. It's nice to see what Sony is creating. Maybe a little envy, just because I'm Canon user and I'm sticking with it for now. And as always - thanks for all the puns

They're really pushing the boundaries! But Canon still makes awesome cameras. I just wish they were a bit more in touch with their video users.

I still believe that FX3 will have some awesome new feature, that A7Siii won't support. It's just doesn't make sense to have two exactly the same cameras, and one of them to have a vents.. If I am to make a wild suggestion here, FX3 will have probably internal raw recording.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been wondering if they’ll do something like that, but I haven’t even heard rumors of firmware updates for either camera 🤷🏻♂️

It's more of a lens thing than a camera thing. Although I do wish that Sony would add the breathing compensation from the a7IV to their other models.

I pre-ordered my 1st one within 1 min of B&H opening up. I ordered a second a7S3 two months later for $3200 from Greentoe (before the chip shortage). Both are workhorses. I record 4k60 at 8 bit for 9 hours continuously (no stopping for track events here:kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4bcg4hooqedr7M&ab_channel=APoManProduction) and they don't over heat. Now on 10 bit they will overheat but not on 8 bit. The colors don't match with the a7III but the colors will be very close for a1.
