Heat soak vs heat dissipation: R5 is designed to absorb more heat and when it does, it takes much longer to dissipate while the Sony is the opposite - the camera body gets hotter faster in order to dissipate heat with better passive system. Unfortunately when ambient temps are high like in FL, Sony’s approach is affected as it requires cooler air temps to draw out the heat whereas R5 just soaks heat into its larger/denser body until it can’t

A total garbage camera system with expensive lens meant to burn and churn user's wallet so that the user become insecure of their investment and eventually become indoctrinated and clueless follower to protect their garbage from any criticism.

My understanding is that sony is letting its camera to overheat bit more than Canon before it shuts down, as when heat gun was used, its was showing roughly 5C° more than Canon. How this will effect the reliability of the hardware in long run, time will tell. Their is no doubt that R5 needs lot more processing power to get video from 45 megapixel camera plus to me it looks like R5 processor is much more powerful than Sony's and that really show in read out times. This is another reason R5 is draining the battery faster compared to A7siii. We all know, more powerful hardware means more heat and quicker battery drainage but worrying thing for Sony is that it is getting more hot than Canon with less powerful hardware which makes me think that passive cooling from Sony is just selling stunt. People who have powerful laptops or desktop they know how those things are kept cool under load. Some of the high ends phones, which are weather sealed, have vapour Chambers to keep processor cool but Sony didn't mention any deatils about their passive cooling technology. I can't understand without vapour chamber how then can keep the sensor and processor cool in 5 inch wide body. It's weather sealed so it's definitely no air flow, they didn't mention any vapour chamber or anything similar. My understanding is that sony is using less powerful processor which only has to process image from 12mp sensor , slow storage card compare to R5 as fast readouts will produce heat as well. I am not a Canon fan boy and have cancelled my R5 pre order just to see that how production units will perform. I think best thing is to wait for good 3 months before spending your money and see how these two cameras production units will do and what these companies can do in terms of software update regarding heat management.

If the A7Siii is piping heat away from the sensor, it makes sense that the body will be warmer.
@EhtashamAnwar
@EhtashamAnwar 4 жыл бұрын
@@tqlla its not a 10 feet wide body that its pushing heat away from a sensor and sensor is cool. Its has maximum of couple of inches of space on either side of sensor and it it is not using vapour Chambers, no way it can cool down processor or sensor. R5 and sony has used magnesium alloy in body construction plus they have rubber kind of material layer on the top, so both kind of managing the heat similarly if exactly not the same. In my understanding canon last a bit longer in direct sun only because its body is little big bigger so took it slighter longer to accumulate the heat.
@tqlla
@tqlla 4 жыл бұрын
@@EhtashamAnwar Thats why the body temp is higher. The Sensor temp is going to be higher than the temperature in the body. If the A7Siii is designed to pull heat from the sensor/processors, then the body temperature would be higher. Do you know what you are supposed to do when your car engine is overheating?

Ehtasham Anwar R5 only 8K and 4K HQ modes are 45MP. Line skipping according to multiple reviewers, so it isn’t using the entire sensor. It’s probably binning all pixels one the lines read since the artifacts are very limited, so I guess it’s something like 8K*2K (16MP) used in normal 4K video modes.

Hugh Brownstone (Three Blind Men and An Elephant) tested the A7S-III and found that there is overheating in direct sunlight. He did just simple 4k24p but the camera shut down after 23min. Cool down and continue shooting went pretty fast. To me, it looks like the A7S-III is getting the heat fast out of the camera but if the surface of the camera is very hot, this doesn't help. The R5 seems to be better isolated. This is usually a disadvantage but in some cases, it helps to keep heat out until the camera heats up from inside. In direct sunlight and hot conditions, the R5 might have an advantage between minute 20 and 35 of a shooting day. According to Hugh, the Panasonic GH5 and S1H kept running under this conditions for more than 2 hours and didn't overheat at all.

I think A7s3 has a conductive body (with passive cooling) whereas R5 is more insulated (without fan or passive cooling). Since heat transfer goes both ways, on one hand it means it is easier for A7s3 to gain heat in hot external environment than R5, which prevents heat from entering the body; on the other hand, it's also easier for A7s3 to dissipate heat in most other situations.

How about a thermal imaging recording of the cameras in action? Dan had the right idea of using a temperature gun: maybe one camera company gives a warning/shutoff at a lower temperature and another company has a higher threshold. The thermal imaging would show us what's happening with the heat and where (if any) heat is leaving the camera.

Here's my theory why it overheated - the ambient temperature is as hot as Sony A7SIII because the whole unit is a heat sink due to passive cooling. There was no effective heat transfer out to the environment when it was under the sun sitting on the plastic cover bouncing all the heat from the sun to the camera. The others who have tested this camera trying to overheat it doesn't have problems simply because the ambient temperature (including the human body like Manny Ortiz) it is operating could be lower enough for heat transfer to take place, thus no overheating. It looks like this is quite easier to cool so it keeps running as desired but I would like to see more tests on what factors would raise the ambient temperature that prevents the heat from getting out.

The law of thermodynamics applied to cameras that utilize the camera body as a heatsink dictates that when the sun heats up the body the cooling is reduced. What this test reveals is that the Sony is better at thermal convection than the R5. The fact that inside at room temps the Sony rules supports the law of thermodynamics for a passive cooling system where the body is the heat sink. Conclusion: The Sony passive cooling system is far more efficient in thermal heat transfer than the Canon.

Kind of makes sense. The Sony is designed to passively move heat. Ideally that means moving heat from a hot camera to a cool environment, but if the environment is as hot or hotter than the camera then its going to cause problems. Good news is that you have a predicable fix, just get cool air on the camera. With as sealed as the R5/6 are, people have had issues cooling it down, even putting bags of ice on it hasn't been enough
@boardriderz

Chris K the Sony A7Siii is also sealed just like the R5.
@CKramburglar
@CKramburglar 4 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Barrett they are not sealed in the same way. The R5/6 retain heat, and are less affected by their external environment. The a7siii is designed for heat to be able to move through it, which allows it to run unrestricted in cool environments, but backfires in extremely hot environments
@boardriderz
@boardriderz 4 жыл бұрын
Chris K the Sony is designed to passively move heat through the magnesium alloy body to the outside, the Canon seems to be designed to absorb more heat. But both cameras are environmentally sealed to the outside by rubberised seals and gaskets on all opening s and joins. They are sealed as all cameras are at this price so they can operate in less than ideal environments. Yes, they deal with heat differently, but they are most surely sealed to the environment.

Let's keep in mind Canon R5 was in 4k60, a non-HQ mode thats line skipped garbage! If it was 4k30 HQ mode, it would have lost easily. But even still, Canon ran cooler on Dan's thermometer test so maybe it's Canon just having a lower temperature threshold in the camera, not actually "overheating" anyway? Educated guess

Not sure why there is a discussion about these two cameras, R5 is a hybrid and the other is not, so of course it’s a far better option for those who shoot both, the R5 is better in the hybrid field. And I’d even say the 4K in the canon is better even if not in 4K HQ mode

The overheating test is very misleading imo: it basically shows that canon is better sealed. He DIDNT test, how long after cooling the camera it would take to shoot again. A PASSIVE cooling mechanism needs some cool air around the camera moving in order to cool anything. The Eos r just has a sealed capsule that heats the whole unit. The difference is, the sony should cool much faster and be ready again. Also...i never (!) shot a project while resting a camera in the straight sun on a hot surface that was exposed to uberhot klimate. Who would actually shoot like that? And 4k60p for that matter was well? If he repeats the test with a tripod in blazing sunlight and the same results show up, then ill be interested...

Jose Argumedo no, thats beraly any different. I want to see it used in a realistic way: set up on a regular sized tripod as you would actually use it. Not barely any distance away from a hot surface. Every other tester showed, the sony is less insulated, so that is an artificial test that has nothing to do with actual shooting. AND: why didnt he tell the time before each camera was ready again? Really dislike these kinds of tests, the create clicks but arent actually worth much...

So it seems like the EOS R5 was thought to be this insane perfect camera when it was first announced with all the ambassador videos coming out, but after a bit the overheating concerns creeped in and we discovered the quirks of the camera. When the Sony was announced again, there was a ton of hype, but we're now also starting to learn more about the concerns and quirks of the camera. I'm sure the Sony is by far a better overall video camera than the Canon. I mean it's designed to be used for purely video, so that makes sense. But again, we overhyped a camera, got super excited, and now we're kinda stepping back down into reality. I don't think the Sony overheating will really change much, though. Those who are in the market for an EOS R5, aren't really looking at the Sony and vice versa. They target completely different consumers. Just hopefully the overheating controversy will die down because people are beginning to act like overheating is some new phenomenon. And with that maybe these camera companies will put more focus on a thermal cooling system on these small mirrorless cameras in the future with how much of a big deal this has been. It'll be interesting to see how they react.

No, the Sony isn't released yet, but there's not much they can change with the body. Any changes from now on will be within the firmware. But even then, with the extended overheat shutdown mode on, it still fell short when compared to the Canon in the sun. And Jared's video was mentioned, as well. I think in his video he said the studio was about 72 something degrees. So fairly normal indoor temps. What we're finding is that perhaps the Sony is very sensitive to it's environment. If it's in a cool environment it works perfectly, but as the temp rises, it struggles. Whereas the Canon... well the Canon just consistently overheats and doesn't care about the environment, which in a way is nice because it's predictable, but it still overheats which is an issue.

@@hankblack1 I saw it. He made a point about how he doesn't like tests with cameras sitting in the sun side by side, and while I understand his point I don't necessarily agree that it's a useless test. He says it doesn't reflect real world shooting. Well... if your camera is sitting on a tripod, for a timelapse, or an interview, or anything where you need it stationary outdoors, that absolutely is a good test for those situations. For him, and his run n gun style of shooting, absolutely he'll notice less overheating due to movement and keeping airflow around the camera. But for me since I really appreciated the test because I do have my camera sitting on the tripod sitting in the sun to film performances at festivals or conventions. But again, as I said, it ALL depends so much on the environment. That means temperature, humidity, wind speed, time of day, etc etc. But the test does prove that overheating is possible at least in extreme conditions, which to be honest, is to be expected.

I am not going to take Dan Watson's overheating test as definitive when he is the only reviewer in the whole of KZbin that manages to overheat the A7S III. I have lost count on the number of reviews that says otherwise, Gordon Laing, Gerald Undone, Jared Polin, etc.
