I went back and forth for a month deciding whether to get the C1, G1 or A80J. I decided that picture quality was by far the most important criteria for me. Everything else was a distant second. I wanted the best picture out of the box because I wasn't going to pay someone to calibrate my set. Despite being a heavy gamer who owns all the consoles, I decided to go with the A80J because of Sony's superior XR processor. I've had the TV for a few weeks now and I still get a big ass grin on my face every time I turn it own.

How has image retention been? Was a little let down to see, at least in his review, that it held it longer than the C1. Netflix and regular 1080p updscaling look really good? I’m coming from a TCL R635 in the living room and will be replacing a 2017 TCL P607 in the bedroom with possibly the A80J. Hoping to be a drastic difference in quality than even the R635. Will easily be better than the P607 but hoping to get that “this is what I’ve been missing” feeling from all content.

Apparently every EU-based A80J reviews I’ve seen shows Sony for some reason use the old panel for A80J, however in other markets like US & China, A80J actually has the newer EVO panel with much higher HDR10 peak brightness (my D65 calibrated 77A80J can reach 780+ Nits on 5% window, 740+ Nits on 10% window and 170+ Nits full screen), personally I think 77A80J with conventional anti-glare coating is infinitely close to A90J while being the best large-sized premium OLED TV on the market in terms of price-performance ratio.

Great summary of A 80J! Thanks. Despite all the progress, these high end TVs do not support the gigabit ethernet port. The ethernet speed (not the wi-fi speed) that these TVs support, is limited to 100Mbps only. Thanks for your video, very informative. I just bought this TV "listed as brand new" on the weekend here in Toronto Canada. But I would like to ask somethings that I am confused about. First, after watching yours and other unboxing videos on You-tube I noticed that Sony TV boxes mostly had 2 nylon straps around the cardboard box that needed to be off. My TV box did not have these two nylon straps. Second, in the unboxing videos I watched including yours I noticed 2 cardboard releases at the bottom of the box that are designed to allow you to pull the box straight up and off the TV. My A80J box did not have these releases at the bottom of the box. I had to cut away the box and lift the TV itself out of the bottom of the box. Lastly, I noticed that in some videos there were two label stickers on the TV screen to peel off. My TV only had one sticker label, the yellow energy guide sticker. As you have likely figured out now, I am concerned that I got tricked into buying a refurbished TV. If this were true, it would be shocking as the retailer I bought this TV from has been in business for 65 years and has been an official certified Sony dealer for most of that time. My question is, since these TV's are built in different regions is it possible that my issues are simply a variation in packaging standards. The TV does look great and seems to work fine, but I would still feel cheated if I have been sold a refurbished TV rather than a new one. If you can shine any light on my issue that would be great. Thanks..........

Sony XR uses a newer chip, the MT 9950, hence the proper 4k 120 right out of the box compared to x900h. This new chip is the same one used in the new 2021 8k Samsung which run 4k 120hz hdr vrr just fine. It's definitely not the chip that's the problem. Sony is just lazy.
@TomlinsonHolman525833 жыл бұрын
@@QuackEasy - That's incorrect. Vincent demonstrates in numerous videos (including this video @08:20) that Sony is still using the inferior MT5895 chip. The Sony XR processor helps to achieve proper native resolution @120Hz, however due to the limitations of the MT5895, no HDMI 2.1 Sony TV to date can properly resolve HDR @4K120Hz.

a80j 65" has non Evo version stronger pink vigneting starting from 4% and down to 1% near blacks as well apearing vertical banding lines quite few , I consider Evo panel versions better in near blacks vigneting & vertical banding, mostly truth is like that . I have 1 month a80j 65" all is clean fabulous just sometimes near blacks pink tint in left upper corner appear, regarding vertical bands its rare and visible split second on panning near black shot and also rarelly :) whites are clean and bright colours too no DSE so better I keep panel, that little stronger tint left upper corner in near blacks is unfortunate , I wish it to be at least 50% lesser, its not strongest but above mild appearance rarelly of course 😃 next year all panels will start to be EVO I think great for near blacks

Sony A95k 65 inch QD OLED 3 and 4 are lower down in my list as they're a lot more expensive. Very very tempted to go for the A80j 77 inch because of the size, motion, colours, price. Would have liked to have seen the S95B and A95k in person first but don't think I should be paying so much more for 12 inches less
@owner20071 Жыл бұрын
Which one you went with? It comes to what you watch and in what room the TV will be in (dark or bright). They are more advantages with going with QLED than OLED. OLED is always known for their blacks but QLED mini LCD are right there so no major difference. Also with OLED it don't get that bright and there is always a chance of burn in and it degrades over time (by how much it's hard to say since OLED only came out in 2013 where as LCD are out over 20 years with a very long track record of being reliable). However every manufacturer is getting cheaper, trying to get cheaper parts and they are cutting back on everything to make more profit.

Vincent, in choosing a 4K player to go with the Sony A80/A90, I have heard that the Sony 4K players (x700, 800M/2) are “locked” in player led Dolby Vision and thus do not work well with the new A80/A90 which use TV led DV. Do you know if this is true ?

@Thomas Conway: We do watch other real-world content, but using the same test patterns and clips rather than a movie du jour allows us to compare across different TVs and generations, especially since these clips were specifically selected to highlight certain issues. ISSUE RESOLVED: 100% on Sony A80J 77inch In March Sony released a new TV update that allows the VRR on Sony A80J. Today I installed the TV update and reinstalled the latest Nvidia Drivers. As I expected this was never a driver issue. it was an issue with the Sony A80J software. My issues resolved themselves after the TV update. to get VRR enabled I had to reinstall the Nvidia driver. Now Sony A80J has VRR enabled as does Asus Strix 3090 in Win10. I am a happy man. the issue was screen smear and tear and flicker.

I downloaded the manuals for both the a80j and a90j and was surprised that the 65" a80j can the stand be put in narrow mode (27.25" apart) but 65" a90j can't. I keep my TVs for a long time so to presently I plan to buy either the 65" Sony x95j or Samsung QN90A on Black Friday and not an OLED, not because of price but burn-in concerns. I am worried about my playing a lot of material with black bars either at the top and bottom or right and left and from what I have read online, this over time can cause the pixels on the sides to be brighter than those in the middle because they are turned on less. From the a80j manual pg 6: The following are examples of images that may cause image retention: • Content with black bars either on the top and bottom and/or the left and right sides of the screen. (for example, Letterboxed, 4:3 screen, Standard definition)................To reduce the risk of image retention: • Fill the screen by changing [Wide mode] to eliminate the black bars. Select [Wide mode] other than [Normal]. I am not going to distort the picture by watching material in wide mode. So I am looking to purchase a non OLED that has an ATSC 3.0 tuner. I have a minus infinity interest in gaming and in the real world, nothing is perfectly black.

It's automatic meaning if for example you are watching a Dolby Vision movie the picture mode will change to Dolby and you will get I think 2 or 3 options to choose from like Dark or Light Dolby. For HDR there is no indicator but it will show in HDR you will see it get brighter. Samsung Tv on the other hand shows "HDR" in Settings - Picture Settings. Just make sure you go to Picture Settings - Video Signal then make sure HDR mode is set to Auto and HDMI video range is set to auto, with that it will auto detect HDR (whether it's HDR10, HLG or Dolby Vision)
