I've had my A80J for about 3 weeks now and have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out the best settings. It really does depend a lot on what you're watching most often and so it's challenging finding a compromise in your various picture settings such that you can set them and never have to change them, regardless of what's on screen.

@@jaedin716sw I also have the 77a80j. I got it after my a8h developed some vertical banding. I'm noticing some black crush. But maybe that's because it's a bigger screen. At first I though the a8h had better picture, but it was a 65 inch. I do find myself constantly switching signal formats between enhanced and enhanced dolby vision based on content, which is annoying

Def earned my sub! Have a 5 year old LG oled I'm replacing and yes 83in Sony a90j is the one. I wasn't aware how gorgeous the pic quality has increased the last 5 years. 120hz and the increase in brightness along with Sonys processing power changed everything

You thinking wrong I know quite a few people who got the either A80 or 90J for the ps5 and within days they replaced them for the best gaming TV on the market fact the LG C1 and G1, Sony is a movie TV it doesn't even have VRR just 2 2.1 hdmi and screen tear at 4k 120fps, they have dropped upto £3000 in price here in the UK my G1 dropped a few hundred quid, trust me buy the G1 for gaming it blows your mind, the gaming optimizer is brilliant, I was Sony until 5 years ago when they take a year to add VRR to the X900 that doesn't even work properly it flickers, your wasting your money buying a Sony for gaming but it's your money iam just trying to give you some advice from a ex Sony owner to the twice game of the year TV the LG 2 years in a row, the G1 is so thin it comes with its own wall bracket and free 5year insurance, anyway enjoy your gaming whichever TV you buy

@@footballasylum6239 A90J is, still the better tv. Sony have begun rolling out the VRR update which will match LG. It will be worth the wait. The LG tv is only better for gaming, that is it, nothing else I'm afraid.

I just got lucky and got a Z9K and most of your settings transfer to what I use with my set. I set color temp to neutral myself but many like expert 1 which is default. I think it will apply to most modern Sony sets and gives people a idea of what all the settings do so they can pick what they like.

I really like it. My previous 65 825 Mini led TCL has better blooming control but it crushes blacks a bit to do it. This thing is a beast, when it gets good 4khdr coming in its just stunning to look at and has that you are there 3d look with excellent black levels, color. Check out the shoot out from Value Electronics tomorrow and Sunday they'll have the 8k shoot out Sunday and 4k Saturday. The 8k up scaling looks really good doing 4k stuff too, very bright and crisp. It's going to be too expensive for most folks but damn it looks nice playing a 4k movie or you tube video.

I used these for my A95K... dropped the brightness to 25... sooooo dreamy! TV manufacturers keeping producing brighter tvs (for example, the A95L is supposed to be 2x brighter than A95K). Soon, they'll be selling sunglasses at BestBuy.

I have a concern. You mentioned using these settings when gaming. I noticed when you pick VRR which is the only way to 120FPS on PS5 the TV defaults to game mode leaving these pictures options greyed out. Is there a work around to get 120FPS without game mode?

Kg, I'm probably getting the A80J or LG C1 77 inch to replace my current Sony 65 in edge lit x930 which is about 4 yrs old. I'm the guy that's paralyzed buy still loves to game and watch movies. I'm not a great gamer due to spinal injury and its affect on my hands. I can't really move my fingers so I rest my palm on the joysticks. My Dad rigged the left and right triggers with a little attachment so all I have to do is press down and it pushes in the triggers. You'd have to see a pic but it works perfectly for me. I'll NEVER be a great gamer but it's still a blast as I'm a huge battlefield fan, can't wait for Grid legends, Forza 5. I'm even loving MLB the show 21 off of gamepass. Is there a game mode for the A80J? I know it's nothing like the LG C1 which is a gamer's paradise right now. I'm still waiting for one more thing and that's Robert's tv showdown coming in September. I need to have my tv by October as that's when battlefield 2042 comes out! 👍 I'm still looking at a few alternatives to OLED. TCL's r6-48 8k or 4k 75 inch variant. I need to see the Hisense 8k dual cell Robert was talking about that's coming very soon. I thought i might get the LG Qned 90 or 99 but they beat them up pretty bad. I use my tv for gaming maybe 14 hrs a week. I'll use my Xbox series X's 4k player for movies and then I'll watch Disney, Netflix, HBO max and even sling out KZbin tv. I only use Comcast strictly for my internet. I'm a cable cutter now and I'm going to stay that way. Nick Ps YOU think I have the right game plan? I love OLED but if there is an alternative

The game mode is really great looking on the Sony OLEDs I didn't have any issue with the way it looked, the main issue was that it lacked features like VRR which isn't a big deal for most people so I can say for sure the Sony OLED had a great looking game mode. I do think thats a good game plan though. The only thing coming close to OLED for LCD in my eyes right now is the QN90A, but I suppose the Dual Cell could close but that remains a big mystery!

Thanks! I used gamma -2 on SDR for a bit but ended up settling on 0 but I’m glad you said this because it’s putting your own preference into the equation which is what I hope people will take into consideration with settings ultimately you got to find what works for you.

This is my personal opinions, observations and suggestions for Model X95J. I am assuming A80J and A90J picture settings have the same affect to picture quality and picture modes have the same behaviour. I own a 75X95J and reviewed all preset picture modes. Out-of-the-box the majority of consumers will be happy making no changes to picture settings. Simply flipping between preset picture modes. The majority of the time, the TV will automatically change settings depending on content played anyway: SD, HD, HDR and Dolby Vision. If you are going to play around, remember you can always (easily) reset your changes. Best to play with settings under the “Custom” setting so the other presets retain their original settings. Each HDMI input retains its own unique settings.(Of course to have best latency for gaming, Game Mode must be selected and desired changes must be made to it. Changes can easily be reset here too) “Netflix Calibrated”(simply called “Calibrated”) can only be chosen when you load the native Netflix App. This mode uses different picture settings depending on quality/source of content. These settings are the only presets locked and cannot be modified. NOTE: The source content must be started and playing / paused to modify picture settings. Loading native Disney+ App and selecting a Dolby Vision supported title, you can choose between additional picture modes “Dolby Vision Bright” meant for bright rooms or “Dolby Vision Dark” meant for dark rooms. (The only difference I see is Reality Creation and Motionflow settings) Native Disney+ and Prime Video Apps use the same picture modes for "SD", “HD” and “HDR” content. Making a picture setting change would affect both Apps (possibly others). In Canada we have Bell Crave TV which broadcasts only in "SD" and “HD” and modifying its settings does not affect Disney+ or Prime Video. (I copied the Netflix “HD” settings for Crave under “Custom” and it looks great) To allow a 4K UHD Player playing Dolby Vision content to play using Dolby Vision preset picture settings, you must manually change HDMI signal format for the input to “Enhanced format (Dolby Vision)”. I could not test whether the Dolby presets are available as my UHD Player does not support Dolby Vision. I copied Netflix HDR settings under "Custom" and switch between it and presets Cinema and IMAX Enhanced. For me, the settings with the most impact: (my choice) Gamma: Left for darker blacks, Right for revealing Blacks (-2 or 0) Color Temperate: Neutral for Whiter whites, Expert1 has yellowish to it (Neutral) Live Color: Boosts color (Low) Auto Tone Curve: Should be ON when viewing HDR content (ON)

Thanks for your settings! This is my first 4k tv and I'm having a bit of a hard time adjusting to all the film grain I'm now seeing compared to my 1080p lcd that I used for the past 10+ years. Those noise reduction settings don't seem to do much for me, I think my eyes will just eventually need to adjust to it!

Well it's because it's upsllciang 1080 up to 4k unlike your native 1080p display which didn't have to upsclae but sony has the best 1080p of any 4k tv out so it doesn't get better for a 4v tv but like any other tb it can only do so much it's 4k image is insanely good lol Also size makes a different I bet your older 1080p display was smaller so being bigger now you will notice things

COLOR SPACE: DCI a.k.a. Digital Cinema Initiatives What are your thoughts on DCI as a permanent setting for all content (HDR, SDR, etc.)? I noticed a very significant increase in the overall color gamut of my 65" A90J. I actually see more colors. I Love 'Samsung Color', so to speak, and the DCI setting seems to be superior to sRGB/BT.709 (and that's with Live Color set to High/Medium in sRGB/BT.709). I also read that 4k Ultra Blu Ray Discs are mastered in the DCI color gamut. Even BT.2020 is just a 'container' with DCI inside of it. One thing is for sure... ...DCI made an extreme difference for my 1080P Blu Ray Discs.

Yes. You probably also noticed that your input lag has felt worse? Your not actually in game mode right now so go into your Xbox settings and set it to Dolby Vision gaming off don’t use Dolby vision for gaming with a Sony TV as there is not a game mode for it to keep the latency down.

Yeah these are my HDR settings for the most part SDR as well just a few tweaks to brightness. For DV just let the TV take over I like to use Dolby Dark personally.

Dolby black I think betters IMax. Stunning hdr picture. Max luminescence and brightness depends on content. Black level 50 on A80 is good. Black adjust I leave off. Gamma needs setting to zero as out of box marker is incorrect. Sharpness at 50 is good. Reality creation is best left to auto. Their AI processing is that good it will detect when to bring it in or not. I also agree that noise reduction works well in auto but on hd or hdr content it’s best left off. Agreed on smooth gradation too. Colour is spot on out of the box. Motion settings I leave to factory setting. I hate soap opera effects. Good summing. The main point to get across here, which cannot be over stated, is that Sony really have made a game changing impact with their A80j and A90j tv sets. Their factory custom settings are that good out of the box that no one really needs to do anything more than to use custom or cinema settings out of the box. The dynamic range of these tv’s is stunning but for ultimate realism and sharpness they still haven’t really bettered Sony’s entry level high end full backlit array sony XF9005 Tv’s which still provide the ultimate 3D ultra sharp pop I’ve ever seen from a tv. Shame that they’re so unreliable though, my last one packing in after just 4 years from new. Sony need to up their game when it comes to reliability.

Hey man make sure if you turn the ambient light sensor off make sure all of the 3 internal settings are off also I found eben jsut turning the main off if you leave the internal ones on it still works. I think alot of people do this and alot of people have the tone curve on automatic even vincnet left the internal settings on and just turned the main one off I know it's weird and idk why it does that. Just doing this alone made it so scenes were more consistent if I'm being honest it may be what some of the inconsistencies are about I tested it for hours. It makes no sense and shouldn't work when you turn the main off yet it does still work haha. Crazy shit and I know so many people are just turning off the main sensor without going into the 3 settings and turning them off also.

But I'm not so far beyond myself that I can't see other points of view. It does suck though how people can't speak there minds in the community because of trolls or other people ruining it. The censorship is real and it's sad that social media has gotten to this point. We always have to be worried about others starting something or taking something wrong. Then things get blown up and it's just ridiculous. So I do understand why someone would be worried about stiring the pot or drama starting from a comment like you said. I wish it wasn't but it is. I noticed on my 80J, that when I switch to VIVID mode, everything is moving faster. I don't think it's the soap opera effect. Example, birds flapping their wings but switched to VIVID, they flapping faster. Its distracting. Can u help me out?

Go into motion and see if changing the slider helps also your cinemotion may be set wrong

It could in a bright room with sun coming in but that’s a very niche case scenario. When I had them side by side A90J seemed clearer up close from 1-3 feet away but beyond like 4 ft they clarity was pretty similar and hard to tell apart in that aspect. I don’t think it should be an issue for most.

@@tracer073 I like the picture quality overall, especially watching old content. But I feel the semi matte coating on 65" affects the contrast and sharpness. I'm picking up C1 to compare. Idk why Sony did that for the smaller sizes, at least the 77in has the glossy finish smh

Only problem I have with the a80j are the raised black levels. You can see this on a movie like venom let there be carnage. The whole last fight looks so washed and gray. While on my c1 it looks so much better. The c1 also makes animated movies so much nicer to look at, the colors are more vivid.

They have live color option which will give you that Samsung look on high. You can also raise color to make it more saturated looking if that’s what your aiming for.

Can you please clarify what is this dimming issue with the static logos? If the game has the slightest hint of HUD the image will dim down after a few minutes? This seems like a huge deal breaker.

That’s hard to say then I think if your all in on gaming C1 is definitely the better choice for you since you are playing FIFA but at the same time if your turning off logo dimming you are turning off some anti burn in tech that LG out in place so keep that in mind.

We mention FIFA a lot because it’s got a bright static scoreboard and the whole entire hud is very bright. If the huds are kind of subtle I doubt you’ll see it dim much.

I started with peak luminance on high for sdr now I've turned it off. I think high peak luminance for sdr is too bright.

Yeah I can see that some older shows I definitely had it low otherwise it felt too bright.

Are there recommendations for settings on Air antenna channels? l was expecting that tv channels can looks better but isn't showing what I expected, I have a samsung led 65'' 2019 and looking too much better, everthing else looks wonderful on A80J except for tv channels.. Netflix, Disney plus, iTunes on Apple tv 2021 and playing movies from the Sony UBP-X700 player most blu- rays movies are looking nice the XR upscaling really do a good job sometime looks like 4K resolution, but definitely the Air channels are not looking good. Any ideas?

That’s cool some people might like vivid better. I want people to use what they think looks the best. Vivid might be too over sharpened and too saturated for some so I wanted to provide a alternative.

The problem is Vivid makes everything look like crap, it really downgrades the picture quality l, even 4k looks like shit, looks like it's 480p on Vivid. I turn up contrast and luminosity to high though, u can turn up Gamma one or two as well depending on what you're watching, that will match Vivid good.

Sony isn't a gaming TV not one person I know who games has a Sony led or Oled TV, they either have a LG C1 or G1 or Panasonic JZ real gaming TVs, they don't even have vrr on the Sony only the X900 and that flickers, these TVs have dropped upto £3000 here in the UK my TV dropped a few hundred pounds, I have 4 2.1 hdmi freesync, gsync, Nvidia, VRR and more , Sony is a movie TV simple

Probably the camera to render yeah motion looks good on the Sony. Most videos are uploaded at 24fps or 30fps to cut down on file size unless it’s specifically a gameplay dedicated video.

@@TechWithKG the only way to avoid any input lag is to put it in game mode, which dims the screen considerably. I'm not a TV guru , but as far as I can tell there isn't a way to increase the tv brightness while in game mode.

Your reply is the reason I went with the Samsung QN90A. I really thought about the AJ90, but I was thinking it might be too dim. The AJ90 is much brighter than the A80J, but I doubt significantly.

@@mousmnwltr I did the unthinkable! I ordered the 55A90J. I still may get a QN90A around March Madness for my other room. Too many praise Sony’s processor over the Samsung. I also came across people claiming the QN90A can get too bright and dimming is a nightmare. Dimming it throws off the contrast. It’s as if the manufacturer set it a certain way for it to run. My new set will arrive next Tuesday morning.
