Great look on the videos. Awesome shots with the A9 love the images not the price. Shoes hanging for drug areas is an urban legend. My mom's brother's used to do that to be mischievous and they all became highly decorated veterans. (Korean war vets) which is the time frame when that started.

Fun review and great to see you in my neck of the woods. I've been living and shooting in this area for almost 30 years now and still haven't hit all the spots on my list. Armstrong Woods (west of Jenner) has less trees than Muir Woods but much more consistent light and far less crowds. The Marin Headlands has amazing bridge views, a cold-war Nike missile base, and Pt Bonita lighthouse, one of the best on the coast IMHO.

at 05u30 you mention to observe the shadows and that your eyes compensate, so to keep that in mind when you take a picture. Does the A9 not have an electronic viewfinder which gives you what you are going to get ? so you can compensatie . using a D5 would be more challenging with normal viewfinder no ....

Great Work Mate! Thanks for such a great video. Do you think upgrading from my A7rII to an A9 is a good idea? I shoot land and nightscapes, no portraits. My main concern is that i'll lose dynamic range and notice it in the shadows and general pushing the limits in lightroom.
@mattgranger7 жыл бұрын
+Rexx Fernandez Unless you need speed and better af for your landscapes etc, I'd think A7r2 is better suited

Great review Matt! I did the test with Max on the D5 vs A9 I'm finding the af much better than the D5. I'm curious to what your style and settings are
@jaredbaker7117 жыл бұрын
I can see the bias is still too much for Matt. The a9 is why I finally sold my D5. There were far too many improvements on the D5 including cost and a HUGE body size difference. Walking around with this body is so refreshing compared to that massive D5. Autofocus/tracking was at the top of my list. For weddings and wildlife the high speed silent shutter is so groundbreaking. The no blackout was very confusing initially. The buffer was amazing. On the comment about the 85mm GMaster, it is hands down out of this world amazing (50 lines of resolution!!!). Mirrorless has finally arrived in action/sports! My only gripe is that both card slots are not USH-II. Hopefully an update in firmware may fix this. I know that by 2020 (Tokyo Olympics) There will be some real big glass and maybe an a9miii. At the end of the day it was the final image that truly sells this camera.

I've walked from Portland Oregon to San Francisco on route 99E down to interstate 5 some of the way because of stopping in Eugene then Grants Pass and take. 199 route to 101 then interstate 1 after Leggett and stop by Bogerta Bay and got some nice photos but that was 3 years ago. The weather can be a pain in the butthole. It was a long trip but worth the experience

Hey Matt you need the same camera harness as in 3:49 in the video. Fantastic production, this video is a huge leap to what i am used to from you, well done. Aussie Aussie Aussie. Keep the vids coming. Cheers.
@longrider95517 жыл бұрын
I am not arguing it is better than anyones else's camera I don't think that is fair or productive, but to get the best of this A9 you have to become familiar with the tracking settings. If you think you can rent one and go shoot you run the risk of missing shots like Matt did. The Fuji xt-2 is the same way, you have to become familiar with the tracking settings and they are unbeatable when you add the live view and no blackout.
@mattgranger7 жыл бұрын
+Longrider despite what editing might suggest, I didn't open the box and go straight to the parade. Of course I took time to get familiar. That's the whole point of these Field Tested videos. I had these for 3 weeks.
@cdmurray237 жыл бұрын
What AF settings were you using? I"m trying to set mine up. Af Center Lock on? Did you changed the AF Track Sensitivity, if so what setting worked best for you? Did you use Eye AF during the parade any?
@zagan17 жыл бұрын
With AF you lose shots anyway, with 693 something points the camera is just going to pick any old one and you just have to hope it was the right point. Having silly amounts of points is ok but if you don't have an idea of what one or what bunch will be selected then how good is the AF system really? Even Jarod ended up having to say some of the shots he did, were out of focus using the AF and eye tracking even the RAW pic he put out was out of focus pretty bad. The paper and the hand holding the paper is in focus and the face is ok when zoomed out but is slightly off, everything else is way way out of whack. I do think the A9 is a good camera but there are minor problems, that would need to be sorted going by what people are saying about it, and I don't mean the over heating I mean the FPS then banding which if you use the manual shutter then the FPS drops below 5, which puts in in the beginner cameras of canon and nikon. Writing to the buffer etc and the a9 is 100% useless, you can't take any photos, no matter how much you want to. The other is there doesn't seem to be many or any sports photographers that want to use it anyway, and it's low end wedding shooters that seem to be swapping to sony but it's such a minor % really, that I don't know if it'd matter all that much.
@longrider95517 жыл бұрын
Did not know that from the vid Matt all apologies
@longrider95517 жыл бұрын

Great video! You know my love of food and wine (and photography) so it won't surprise you to learn that I have spent a lot of time up and down the coast from SFO to Mendocino eating, drinking and shooting. There is only a short list of cities as colorful as San Fran. The restaurants are fantastic in many genres and price points. Add the coast and the bridges and it's hard to beat. (Sydney is definitely on that short list! Don't get me started on Hunter Valley Shiraz) Muir Woods is a natural wonder of the world. The wines of Sonoma (especially the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of the Sonoma Coast) are phenomenal (Napa is for Cab and Sauvignon Blanc, with allowances for exceptions to all these generalizations). The only thing better for a photographer than a helicopter ride is a balloon ride. Never been to the Pride Parade in San Fran, but the one in Chicago is phenomenal. Oh, sorry, this was a gear vlog, not a food and wine vlog, right? I am a Canon shooter (no disrespect to Nikon, which makes great gear), but I do use a Sony a6500 a lot when I want to travel light and fast. When I see how Sony is innovating at a furious pace while Canon and Nikon offer incremental (and sometimes less) improvements, I can't help wondering what the Big Two are thinking. I can criticize Canon, Nikon and Sony all day long, but I do appreciate Sony's pushing the envelope. We could talk about what Godox is doing on the speedlight/strobe front to kill the Canon system (which I love) and the Nikon system (only know what I read in the papers), but that's another Field Test for another time.
