Having used my A9 for many types of photography over the past couple of years, I concur with everything Mark is saying - it's an awesome camera :)

Thanks Mark, your videos and education are great. I’m buying an A9. I already have an A700 (just used by my daughter now), an A850 which I still enjoy occasionally but my wife uses with the 50mm 1.4 for second shooting weddings, an A99 which is great but I now find the focus point coverage very poor, the A7R (perhaps not the best) but great for landscapes, the A7RIi which is with me all day, and the A6300 which we use for holiday photos when we don’t mind so much if someone steals our stuff. The A9 is the camera for me. The A7Riii (3) does not give me what I need.

I used the A6500 for fast action until the A9

Well now I can't decide between this and the A7riii again! Also, off topic...did you grow up in/around Birmingham or Wolverhampton UK Mark?

You have a good ear for accents - I grew up 10 miles north of Birmingham, went to college in Wolverhampton and then lived in Birmingham before heading out into the world :-)

I had the same problem - I bought the a9 and love it. Once I picked up the a9 and tested it the decision was made very quickly.

Dear Mark, I currently use my A7 RIV. I am interested in buying the A9 for sport and low light photography. I cannot afford the A9II (or A1). For an amateur like me would you say that the older A9 will still be a good buy in 2021? Thanks, Johann

Good choice! - the A9 has a very similar IQ and AF performance to the newer A9II

I wish the peeps who still prefer their Canon's or Nikon's would see that Sony's advancements are pushing their brands to work harder to please them.

I would rather people like what they want but don't talk bad about the other systems.

Also, the Sony cards are rated at megabytes per second, not megabits per second. 300 MB/sec is insanely fast for an SD card!
@AlphaCreativeSkills

You are correct Megabytes not Megabits - talking for an hour without a script means there are probably a few other errors or 'slip of the tongue' moments in this extended monologue :-)

I just realized this is like 8 months old. No wonder no mention of the A7RIII or Nikon 850.

If these cameras had been available at the time of this presentation i would have mentioned both. The AF system of the A9, however, still has no peers in my opinion. 20 fps with no blackout with the ability to lock on and track subjects in low light ( -4 EV). The A7RIII has 10 fps but this has to be dropped to 8 fps if you need live view to be able to pan the camera. The silent shutter on the A7RIII would also be subject to shutter distortion as it does not use the stacked BIS CMOS sensor design of the A9.

Pity Sony don't listen to pro sports shooters who value bigger ergonomics combined with top quality weather sealing, (important to take note of their lenses in this area as well). I'm loving the full frame AF and speed but using this with gloves on during a football match in Manchester on a freezing day in January wouldn't be fun.

I am not sure the 400 f/2.8 is any less weather sealed than the Nikon or Canon equivalent lens and there are options to use a rain cover that allows the hands to be under the cover and working without gloves.

the Lock On pretty much sucks...unless shooting like shown with a flat background ( snow) than it can keep focusing the subject. It needs more work.

I have a very high success rate - better than any other camera I have tested (and I test a lot of gear)

Maybe I'm also using it wrong, but IMO when the background is busy you cannot trust it if absolutely cannot miss the shot.

Try these settings - I photographed a triathlon event last weekend and came back with a 95% hit rate - most of the backgrounds were busy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5evm6F7aZKBipY
