The 1.6 crop factor has nothing to do with the aperture. F/4 stays F/4 regardless whatever body you place the lens on. Otherwise the aperture would change when you crop your shot on post-processing what is definitely not the case.

Yes, the lens aperture does not change. I should have made that more clear. It's an F/4 on APS-C, which doesn't change to a full-frame f/4 just because it's placed on a full-frame body. An APS-C f/4 is approximately the equivalent to a full-frame f/6. Kind of like how an iPhone f/1.4 isn't as good in low light as a full-frame f/1.4

Light transmission remains the same regardless of the used sensor. So if you use a f/4 lens and choose your exposure settings the image will be exposed identically whether is full frame, apsc or a phone sensor. What you mean probably is you can compensate with higher ISO on a larger sensor because of the fact that it produces less noise. Also depth of field will be different but that's not just because of the aperture.

The 18-105 APS-C gives great results on the a7RII but only because of the massive MP count. In my opinon better than the results of the Sony 70-200 f4 which is the only full frame lens I have for it (apart from my a99 SLT lenses)

I think the kit lens for full frame sony cameras is the 28-70mm and not 24-70mm . Correct me if I'm wrong

You'll have to use the Super 35 mode. It will be cropped, but still in 4k

Im pretty sure onnthe sony a7c the quality doesn't change in super 35 mode when shooting video. U do lose a bit of quality for photos though. Can anyone clarify this for me because ive came across some mixed info on the subject. From what I understand, its something sony upgraded when they made the a7c.
@itsjohnzamora
@itsjohnzamora 2 ай бұрын
From my understanding, you don't lose any quality from the sensor in Super 35 or Clear image zoom since Sony oversamples their video resolution. Any loss of quality that you see is just from the softness of the lens

I appreciate the video very much so... But damn. Friends should buy friends the full frame lens when they know their friends only had enough to buy the fullframe body. ;( live and learn and work another job to buy the new lens.

You're absolutely right. I now do photo & video full time and am fortunate enough to shoot with a good range of full-frame lenses. If I was to update the video with what I've learned over the last couple years, I'd say something along those lines. The glass should be the main priority, and the camera just needs to be good enough

I was just making a joke in reference to your friends don't let friends use crop lens on full bodies, if that wasn't clear. But until I watched your video, I didn't know like Whaaaa? My sigma 16mm doesn't work with my new A7iv body!? Reduced quality video and megapixels with photos. What do you recommend as a first full frame lens?

@@WeWynne Oh I gotcha haha, that went over my head 😂 Of course it depends on what you're trying to do, but about 80% of my professional work has been done on the cheapest Sony lens - the 50mm f1.8. You can get it for like $250. I just upgraded to a Zeiss 50mm f1.4 last month, but honestly I'd say the upgrade wasn't necessary. I just bought it because it was a good deal haha, and even though the Zeiss is miles better technically, I still find myself missing the slight softness of the Sony nifty fifty that made it perfect for portraits. So I'd say do that! You can get professional results with that lens and the a7iv (I still use the a7iii) that people will pay for, then you can use that money to build out the rest of your lenses and widen the scope of things you can do. That's at least the path that's worked for me!

@itsjohnzamora awesome info, thanks! Was doing a lot of research last night and might land on the Tamron 20-40 f2.8 since I'm so used to the Sigma 16. Having up to 40mm would give me the 16mm look with the crop cam and the 20 I think would allow me to get real nice wide look. Thanks again. Keep up the awesome vids.

You're not losing any low light performance only depth of field because you need to get further from your subject to get the same shot thats literally it 😂
@itsjohnzamora
@itsjohnzamora 2 жыл бұрын
You do have to calculate for the smaller sensor area though, so f/4 on an APS-C area isn't the same as f/4 on a full frame. Just like the iPhone has an f/2.8 aperture, but it doesn't let in near as much light as an f/2.8 on a full frame camera
@HwayVision
@HwayVision 2 жыл бұрын
@@itsjohnzamora it's the same amount of light on both sensors just performance of low light is better on full frame and depth of field of the same lens is different because of distance from the subject to the lens. The closer the subject to the lens the greater the depth of field.
@itsjohnzamora
@itsjohnzamora 2 жыл бұрын
@@HwayVision I think we're saying the same thing. That lens should perform about the same on an APS-C as it does on a full frame with APS-C mode. What I was saying is that f/4 on an APS-C lens is equivalent to f/6 on a full frame lens, and if you have a full frame you probably want something faster. Sorry I didn't make that point clearer in the video

What about in video? If i use this on my a7c and use it mainly for video, will it affect video quality?
@itsjohnzamora
@itsjohnzamora 2 жыл бұрын
It will. You can still shoot at 4k and use all your picture profiles, but it doesn't use the full sensor so you will lose quality and the big one for me is you have to apply that crop factor to the aperture as well. So this is closer to a constant f/6 aperture on full frame. I'd say the money is better spent on a lens made for full frame as much as I love this lens

@@itsjohnzamora How is it possible that changing the crop factor will change the aperture ?

I mean the crop factor only apply regarding focal lens, not the amount of light you get

@@itsjohnzamora thanks for your answer. In that case not exactly : a 35 mm 1.8 is always 1.8. it's just that in aps-c it will "look" like a 50. Which mean that to have a "35 mm FF" field (not depth of field) you will have to put something like a 24mm on your aps-c. And of course, 24mm give you more depth of field, less separation from background etc than a 35. But the amount of light entering the sensor is the same, I can simply tell by the fact that I often shoot at 2 cam, one is FF and the other aps c, and I use the exact same aperture, iso, etc. (But if you have any website or article telling me different i truly want to read them because because your sentence intrigued me)
