Sony Backtracks On Helldivers 2 Situation And Nintendo Makes An Interesting Change | News Wave

Last night a major update dropped from Sony flipping their decision for Helldivers 2 requiring a login to PlayStation Network on PC. Nintendo appears to be making some changes behind the scenes in preparation for what's next with a datamining showing a new feature that's been added.

Former indie dev here, worked on a small Switch title. Regarding the Bezel Engine update, I definitely remember the theoretical maximum refresh rate on the *current* Switch built-in display already being much higher than 60 Hz, and while I don't recall the exact number, 240 Hz sounds about right. We didn't use Bezel but I wouldn't be surprised if that change was just made to account for the current display being able to go that high? Obviously in practice most games aren't exactly going to hit that mark since there's other performance bottlenecks.

Yeah no....Sorry not sorry, don't know what "special" people think PS+ had to do with anything, it only required a PSN account. Which was mentioned not only before the game launched but it was also mentioned in the starting screens and was common knowledge that it was going to be required after May 30th 2024. Its nothing different from Microsoft requiring silver XBL accounts, or the accounts that WB games, Ubisoft, 2k games, EA, etc. who all require you link an email to something. It had nothing to do with PS+, they've put out several statements about how happy they are with PS+ subs, its been pretty common knowledge to people who know how to read.

To be clear, Sony did not back out because people spoke up: it's because they would have inevitably had to issue refunds for all the countries not supported by PSN. I'm sure refund requests from players outside of this did help sway, but at the end of the day the mountain only moved because they kicked themselves in the balls on this one.

Did Sony not realize there were countries that the PSN would region block the game? Were they not going to sell it there? Why sell it there if the PSN thing was only temporary?

That's probably a part of why they backtracked. They pulled it from non PSN regions after the announcement which is an admittance they knew it would be unplayable in those regions, but instead of restricting it from sale there in the first place they knowingly sold a product that would become unusable once the network requirement was enforced. They technically said an account would be required from the very beginning they just chose not to enforce it, but forgot to not sell it in places that would make it unplayable.

This is only a very small part of the overall issue and that is game publishers are pushing harder for us to not own our games. Ubisoft has already done it with Avatar requiring a Ubisoft account even though it's a single player game, now watch Sony require it for Ghosts of Tsushima too.

Kirby rainbow curse was my favorite WiiU game I’m glad to hear it won’t be stuck on that system. It might be a handheld only game. I mean they could mimic the touch screen on tv with a cursor control scheme but even when it was on WiiU it was technically a handheld game I didn’t even turn on the tv when I played it, just the gamepad.

As someone who plays HD2 a few times a week with the boys. Glad AH got Sony to backtrack on this idiotic decision. Also shoutout to Valve by getting ahead of this and issuing refunds to all those affected in regions that don’t have PSN who would have been left holding the bag. The Kirby game can just borrow its controls from the world ends with you final remix. It’s not ideal, but you have a touchscreen when in handheld mode. And twewy uses the switch joycon gyroscope for a pointer when in docked mode. And the gyroscope pointer kinda works. Which is impressive considering it requires a lot finer controls than Kirby and the rainbow paintbrush does.

With Kirby the Switch has a touchscreen so in handheld it would work. On the TV I see them using the joy-con similar to Samba De Amigo or House of the Dead.

240 is an interesting number as it's essentially 120 times 2. I don't want to get my hopes up, but it would be interesting if they're considering at some point supporting some sort of XR peripheral or the system itself would allow for it. You need very high frame rates for VR so as to not cause motion sickness, etc., and you are effectively rendering the scene twice each frame for each eye, so the actual output framerate may be higher. The Quest 3 currently supports up to 120hz right now for example, which is half of 240. I don't know anything about Bezel Engine though.

This just shows the biggest issue with PC gaming, the extra logins and launchers that most of the big publishers have. I can understand if it has cross platform saves, there isn't really any other way to get around it as one service would need to be the master for this. Having a cross platform friends list in a game might also need it but there isn't any point if all you are doing is using Steam/EGS to open a launcher that only opens a single game. All functions that have been put into launchers can be handled by Steam/EGS (well maybe not EGS) or in the game itself.

Vicarious Visions also tried to pitch a new spyro game after reignited, The game took place on forgotten islands and it would've had an older spyro mentor ur own dragon and the game wouldve focused on action and combat in both the ground and the sky. The version if spyro in the pitch was compared to the dragon elders in The Legend of Spyro series in that dykg video. VV even tried to tie it into the live service trend to make sure it gets greenlit but activision still turned it down cuz they wanted them to work on CoD and Destiny 2....

Limited Run does take a VERY long time. But I have always gotten a response from their customer service within 2-3 days if I inquire about something. Sometimes you have to do so to get your order jump started and shipped.

Taking Sony to task over lack of transparency and demanding refunds was the right thing to do. Asking them to improve the almost non-existent security of PSN is perfectly reasonable. What's not, however, is expecting Sony to do live service on PC and not ask for a PSN ID. It would if no other AAA live service game currently on Steam asked for a publisher exclusive account, but 90% of them do. Heck, if you wanted to play co-op Portal 2 on PS3, you needed to open a Valve account, and it's not as if that was made apparent on the back of the box.

@Spawn_Wave , They were issuing refunds to nyone who bypassed the automated Steam Refund system and asked for a refund due to PSN requirements, regardless of hours played. Thats why there is confusion. Many people just did the automated request, which would be auto-declined if you had more than 2 hours played in the game.

Sony screwed it up by forcing people to sign up for an account without taking into account how this would impact players around the world. This decision sounds like it was made by some executive who hasnt played a video game in the past 20 years. Couple points Sony should have made this sign up from the start of all the ports, but at the same time they should have made it some type of bonus for sign-ups, offer skins, power boast or even something wacky like a PS5 drop ship design. If you make a reward for signing up people will willingly do it.
