Sony CD Discman D-5 No Power. Lets Fix it

This was Sony's first portable CD player so she is an oldie! This one was sent to me and none of the servos will activate, rendering the CD Player completely inoperable. Can we fix it? Lets find out!

Good catch! Most people would have called it a day after repairing the main DC-DC convertor. That 8v would have killed the controller. well done sir!

I have a D7 that I for sure did that reverse polarity thing to when I was younger. Almost assuredly has these similar parts damages as it doesn't power up either. This vid will be a great help fixing it! Thanks!

I have one of these I got a few years back, and was using it at work before the pandemic. It worked absolutely flawlessly until one day. It skipped a couple times playing a disc. When that one ended and I put in a new one, it had some trouble reading it. And then that was it. It wouldn't even read a disc anymore. I haven't been looking forward to troubleshooting it, knowing that 80s-era Sony portables were just a mess of tiny fragile wires inside. But some day I will, because it's a great little player, and like you saw, even handles CD-R just fine.

I have one of these that was acting up but almost worked, and then I accidentally fried it thanks to Sony's infamous center negative power supplies. Now it's a shelf piece. It might be fixable, will try someday...

I've right now on my bench a D-5. I've repaired the DC-DC circuitry, but no sled action or focus search. Do you have any tips?

Make sure all of your voltages are present. Also double check that secondary regulator which I had an issue with later on. If it's also damaged it can damage the microcontroller which will cause this

I have a D-5 with the green switch. The display powers on even when the device is powered off. Any ideas?

i should mention that a week ago it worked perfectly fine. I had to mail the power supply for travel reasons and now all i get is the display but no function.
