Nice video. I have been repairing this stuff since the 80's too.... love your vert careful application of the switch cleaner! :) I am the same, whereas you see many people straying vast amounts all over the place! Lovely bringing these old machines back to life isn't it :) I recently repaired a CDP-105, gave it to a good friend of mine and its now in daily use again :)

If i hear any more Christmas music I am going to puke. Overkill. Every place you go that's all they play. Every place has it on music on hold. For me Christmas music from dec 15 to 25 then no more. Radio stations have been playing it 24/7 since Halloween. Sick of it already. Was at a restutaunt having lunch the other day. Was all done and waitress forgot about me. Christmas music full blast for 32 minutes while i waited.bi was starting to feel nauseous. It's ok in small doses but 24/7 is just too much.

Another fine job, well done. I appreciate the story about the divorced lady, having some music is always a good thing to start a new life. And I guess this part is also make the joy of another customer. These old machines are well made and engineered, cause they combine functionally interesting things with simplicity, and you can get them for virtually nothing! It's more simpler than 50 + CD jukeboxes with all CD cases ending lost or broken, and a pain to manage or even change 1 disc. The practical limit is the 6 disc in a tray made for both home or car units. Of course, these solutions seems "outdated", if not obsolete. Nowadays, any audio geek will tell you about lossless audio files shared on a NAS. Of course, recording your 1000 + CD collection will then take some time, but once it's done... Then you can read your music on any home PC or DNLA unit! And if you want to get high end audiophile style, computers can also come with a high end audio card, but most best recent motherboards integrate a digital output, so you can "simply" use any external quality DAC (let assume it can decode properly your audio format: OGG, FLACC or WMA are sometimes problematic on old machines). Next is home solutions made with microcomputers Arduino or Raspberry style to complete a reader with a high end DAC. Of course, money can replace technical skills with some integrating high end new audio servers from NAD, Cambridge Audio, PS Audio... + with internet access to virtually access endless music flow, countless internet radios. But what a headache if you want only music for an evening!

I use an arlic streaming DAC into a tube amp. Can play from computer and many online services. I don't though. I have an old phone with a big SD card with all my music on it. It sits next to the amp plugged in, connected by bt. I can use the remote with the streamer to change tracks and volume ect. Sure i can control from phone but too much work. I just want to turn on and have music. Or i turn on my 200 disk cd player.

I have this exact same unit, purchased from a thrift store. The chassis is made mostly of plastic, but the ladder style DAC has a nice sound and the mechanism is very reliable. The cogged rubber belts never slip.

I broght one from a car boot sale for £5. You're right the DAC is very nice sounding. The only thing that does annoy me about it is how plasticky it sounds when it rotates, but apart from that an excellent player.

Thanks for the video, I'll try those switches on my CDP-500. Everything seems ok, but, it will not spin up the disc motor. Laser twitches up and down and rails are clean and lightly lubricated. Cheers!

Dave knows the Sony tricks ! Have one of those, but no Digital out, and no variable headphone out, so it kind of sucks. Before I had Yamaha X-change CDC-805 from '91, it had all the goodies, but the Sanyo laser gave up (so-so at error correction). Maybe I look into schematics and see if I can add digital out, preferably optical. Usually Sony CD players last long time.

I was so happy to find this video. I had this CD player years ago, had to leave it behind when I moved across the country. Just found a similar model at a local antique shop and it works as expected except the tray makes a horrible rattling noise when it rotates, like you noticed. Would love to get a suggestion on what you think it could be as it's much more noisy than the one I had originally. I am wondering about the rollers underneath maybe having a flat spot.

Took mine apart completely, but i can't figure out how to seat the laser again. The teeth on the laser sit too high up and not catching the bottom gear, only the top one. And when i put a disc in it can't read anything now and sounds like its scratching the disc. Original reason for taking it apart was to replace the laser since it was skipping on every cd i would put in it.

Pick myself up one of these units. I have a lot of memories of it because my dad bought one at the federated electronic stores when they went out of business. Anyways for 1988 when we got it it was high class. Mine is having similar problems. Since I tore it out I decided to replace All the capacitors. Most of them were good but a couple were bulging so I said screw it why not. Spent $40 on capacitors for a $20 unit😅

Hello, I just wanted to say thanks for the great videos! They are very helpful! I did have a question, my cd changers carousel won't spin when the tray gets back into it's home position. When it ejects it seems to work fine, it does the disc skip and everything and rotates. When it goes back in the carousel stops rotating and the lever on the inside the pushes up on the cd and has the blue sensor will not lift up. Is there anyway to fix this? I bought it at my local goodwill and have 7 days to return if it doesn't work however I would like to save it if I can. Also if I were to take to a repair shop, how much does they usually charge? I'm pretty new at this so any info would be helpful! Thank you in advance!

My CDP-C500 has a problem with the microcontroller software; when loading with 5 discs one at a time, then hitting 'shuffle', it will eventually get hung up bouncing back and forth between the same 2 songs on 2 different discs. The fix - load machine, advance to disc 1 position, power off, power on, let machine read disc and tracks from all discs, then hit shuffle, machine will properly shuffle play.

Hello from Ohio! I have a Sony CDPC505 that I found in Goodwill. It is almost fully functioning except that about every 7 or so CD changes, the carousel just needs to move one more tick to be in the correct position to be read. Its not always the same CD. Ive tried lubing all gears and sprockets, hoping that over time it will come back completely since it sat a long time. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you!

Pesky switches! Don't blame you on the gloves, contact cleaner can be nasty stuff plus your hands end up smelling like it for hours afterward. As for the grease I've started using teflon grease, works well and it's plastic safe.

Mine has the same problem, sometimes the tray doesn’t come out and I have to turn it off then back on and it will open, spins disc for few seconds but doesn’t read them, checked the switches and they all are good, turns out the green ribbon wire has a cut in one of the traces near where it connects to the optical assembly, hopefully that’s the problem

Dr. Dave, you mean you wouldn't pull out your electronics stethoscope and carefully check for pulse and find the SQEAK ? Probably won't hear it much when the lid is back on. I will need to check my Sony combo CD / boom box and see if the switches are the culprit. Thanks JwgK

I think the first problem was you tested it with a 700MB modern CD-R. They don’t play well when given a disc capacity they are not expecting. If you put in a normal CD or 650MB CD-R I can guarantee it would’ve worked. I have the same Sony CDP-C500 player myself.
@12voltvids2 жыл бұрын
The track picture on the 700 Meg discs is identical to the 650. The only difference between the 650 and 700 is on the larger capacity discs the recording surface goes out closer to the edge. Something like 4 mm difference is it'll be different between them and I haven't seen any players that support CDR that have any problems at all playing the 700 Meg discs I have had players that refuse the 800 MB discs. On the 800 megament desks the track pitch is narrower at some of the older lasers the spot isn't small enough to track them properly

My CDP-CE335 jams. A disc will hop out of its tray and wind up on top of its neighbor, jamming the player. Intermittent occurrence. Any ideas?
@12voltvids4 жыл бұрын
Check the disk clamp. The double sided tape used to hold the felt ring sometimes leaches through and makes it sticky. Then when the spindle drops to change disks the disk sticks to the clamp, the tray rotates and now you have 2 discs jammed.
