Sony DCR TRV280 Digital 8 Camcorder Review

WARNING: Most people don't know this and can ruin this older camera and repairs are very expensive. When you connect these DCR-TRV cameras to some computers with a battery in or AC power connected it can cause an electrical ARC that can fry the IEEE194/ "firewire" connection board. THEREFORE, connect the cable BEFORE power is connected or on. NOTE: Using the "firewire" connection gives the best quality transfer. The RCA connections are pretty bad quality and the USB never worked right. Also, the bummer is good luck finding a computer or laptop with working "firewire" connections, as they went out when USB 3.0 came out.

Hi, I have the same TRV280, and you actually CAN use standard 8mm, Hi8, and Digital8 tapes.

Yes... Sony recommends using Hi8 tapes, but a Digital8 camcorder will record onto standard 8mm (Video8) tapes as well. Sony claims you can only do this at SP speed, but I came across a standard 8mm tape that had Digital8 video recorded onto it at LP speed, and it played just fine.

Can the TRV280 playback a recorded 8mm tape, that was recorded from another camera. Not sure what speed it was recorded in. If not, do u know of any digital camcorder that will playback 8mm tapes, but also has a firewire port? I assume firewire is always in stereo.. I'm using a dazzle capture card with a Samsung SCA-30, that only plays back in mono... Really sucks.. Got the SCA-30 as a gift when they 1st came out in the 90's, recorded lots of footage. Need to transfer to my PC. Thanks in advance.

I got a camera similar to this for 5 dollars at a at a flea market in Alabama. It is the Handycam DCR TRV260. It was made in 2003 .

if you use a capture card with the rca input you can record on the device that capture card is connected to while the camera is on record mode.Look up tapeless vx1000 video on youtube,that might give you a rough idea

end search winds the tape to the end of last recording. Works bot in record and vcr mode. But won't work if you eject the tape and re-insert it.Im pretty sure it caches the endpoint timestamp until you eject the tape so turning the camera off should be fine

So my whole childhood is on hi8 tapes and were filmed on this device. Yesterday it was playing the footage back. I charged it overnight and tried connecting it to my computer via DV to usb. Now it isnt playing back any of the footage on any of my childhood tapes. Its just a bluescreen. Does anyone know what happened and have any thoughts/solutions?

first, DV to usb never works. second, the blue screen probably means the mechanism inside is too dirty to properly playback a tape. you might need to buy a video head cleaner tape

There isn’t a button that causes this it is just a common malfunction with the camcorders of this era were the tape door won’t close. Try opening the tape door, disconnecting the battery, reattach it and then try to close the door. That should work

@@boboyamyams All you need is a DV to DV connection. I had a problem also with a DV end into the camcorder, and a USB connection going into my laptop USB slot! Got nothing. I remembered i had a DV one end and DV other end cable, hooked it up, and BAM, was able to use the old Windows movie maker to download my tapes and save the movie.
