Usually, mini components aren't easy to service, but this Sony unit was very good to get in.

As soon as you displayed the UK Plug (Best in the World btw!) at: 0:40, I knew it was an Adapter to allow certain variations of European Plugs to connect to our UK Sockets, I’ve got 1 or 2 in amongst my Plugs & Adapters somewhere, They do have their uses! 🙂🇬🇧

The Black adaptor with the orange Fuse holder is UK 240 volt the Plugs with the 2 round pins , white & Grey are Europe 240 Volt. Thanks Dave...

Too many plugs. Here we have 1 for 120. 240 plugs have a few different depending on the amperage. Also our 240 can have 3 or 4 prongs depending if neutral is needed. For example ev charger has 3, 2 hot and ground. Range has 4. 2 hot. 1 neutral and a ground. The neutral is required so it can have a 120 circuit for lights convince plug timer ect. 120 outlets either 15 or 20 amp, 240 15, 30, 40, 50 amp.

I brought a Sony CD player in the UK and it came with that same 2 to 3 pin adaptor attached, I guess it was easier (or cheaper) rather than having to fit separate plugs for each European country, as you noticed the adaptor was fused, this is because the original 2 pin isn't and we in the UK like having fuses in our plugs (might be required by law also). 🤔🤔

From a manufacturing point this make economic sense because there are multiple plugs used over in Europe. On this side of the pond they are all the same.

That internal transformer is bigger than necessary. It likely has 120 and 240 taps on the primary. Worked in the 2nd hand car dealers trade for a few yrs. Discovered that 40 - 50% of siezed engines were actually jammed starter motor solenoids. Some were siezed water pump. Many big pay days.😆

Nah, the tires are only flat on the bottom; they're still perfectly round on the top and sides 😆. Also, I have a bit of OCD; that belt you put in the CD mechanism is twisted... I couldn't stop looking at the twist while you blew half the screws across the room and lubed it. I know it's just a tray motor, so isn't really important. Wasn't being negative, btw, loved the video, but I also hate Sony's design choices sometimes - mainly from a serviceability point of view (or, lack there of).

The screws didn't go anywhere. I moved them before the dust off. The twist in the loading belt clears as soon as it's operated.

Hello from Seattle. I've watched your videos and I enjoy them. Are you still excepting Sony ev-c3 record unit. I was able to pick it up for a fair price. By watching your videos I figured that it needed a cap replacement and sure enough there are lines during playback. I want to try to change the caps myself if possible. You discussed the cap kit that has alot of caps in them, Where do you find the cap for the pre/amp where you replaced about 12 caps. I would like to try and see if I can do it. Let me know where I can get the correct caps to replace. Ted from Seattle

Correct me if I'm wrong: but isn't 70 watts the maximum that the player uses? Wouldn't that just be at max volume? I use a plug in watt meter and my stereo (which says 700 watts on it, lol ) only uses at the max 80 watts at full volume. I am interested in the voltage converters. Never used one like those.

That little transformer only puts our 50 watts max. The unit probably draws 10 to 15 just idling with no output.

20:36 I’ve noticed in the video that I can hear the CD mechanism in action as it is reading the table of contents. I wonder if the mechanism of certain CD players are louder to the point the sound of it is noticeable when you’re recording a video, or you put a microphone close to the laser mechanism so that anybody can hear it.

British type G plug. The safest system in the world. Yes I know we will go down the rabbit hole of the 110v is safer blah blah. In the UK we use 110v on building sites. There is always debate about which is safest. To me it doesn't matter if I'm being hit by a motorbike with a 100 miles an hour or a semi truck with 50. The outcome will be the same. Simple Ohms law. You trade one for another

ALL Electricity will kill.! Kids with 3v Button Cells. Adults with 3v Button Cells. 12volt guy. You work on live stuff most of the time. Your watch band will snag you. I doubt you have any formal training. Your safetey practices, SOPs, are like -1. You need to lift your game son. Older does not = wiser.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 3 ай бұрын
That's right swallow a button cell and it could kill you. Safety is the highest priority I have here. I don't operate on anything that's line connected. Nothing. Everything is plugged in through an isolation transformer which means even if my watch band were to snag the supply I'm not going to feel it because I'm isolated from the line. You can only get a shock if current can pass through your body to ground or the return to the transformer. operating on isolation transformer you remove that possibility of current passing through your body to ground because the item under repair or test is isolated there is no reference to ground. If you touch the live wire even if you are grounded there will be no current flow because the live wire has no reference to neutral or ground. when I do work on equipment that requires higher current than my isolation transformer can provide I have a GFI outlet on it so that in the event that I were to make contact with something live the GFI would trip. When I am working around CRT televisions for example you will notice that I do take my watch off in fact when I'm working around anything that is energized my left hand is generally in my pocket of on the wood bench I work with one hand. Rule number one when you're trained especially when you were trained on tube equipment which I was is you keep one hand in your pocket and you wear rubber soled footwear that is insulated. my day job I work for the phone company and yes I am trained in working around service drops. You want to talk hazard try climbing up a pole to hang a drop and you've got 25 KV directly above you separated only by about 7 feet.

Angled gears are not stronger. They reduce noise. For this reason consumer cars have angled gears in the transmission. Specialized sports transmissions have straight cut gears as they transmit a lot more torque because they don't produce axial load caused by sliding along the helical gears
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 3 ай бұрын
Not talking car gears. Talking plastic gears plastic shrinks and cracks. Always cracks at the thinest point which allows the teeth to open up. When they are angled they reduce the area on the vertical plane where the plastic is thinnest and reduce the chance of a crack.

16:15 - A car with a seized engine has no value. Comes with the cost of a whole new engine, or all the work and cost to tear down the seized engine, and change all the destroyed parts. New bearings, new piston, new piston rings and new cylinder sleeves to begin with; new gaskets, new valves if the piston hit any, in case of that, new timing belt if it's not a chain, etc etc etc.... You can better tell how many parts can go wrong in a 'seized engine'. Is the nozzle of that solder sucker made of plastic? Maybe not. Neat tool!
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 3 ай бұрын
No shit! The car that was advertised was a little diesel too I thought that might be perfect good fuel economy. But then I started to read the description and when I read engine seized I laughed. And they are asking $4,500 for it. Somebody's on drugs because a car with a blown engine is worth nothing. I mean obviously they selling it for salvage so that other parts could be pulled off of it and sold like transmission brakes etc but still a car with a blown engine it's got no value. I've been looking at lots I've only actually test driven one and it had red flags all over it. Blower motor fuse was blown for starters has an ABS and traction control warning light on the dash, and the seller doesn't have the key for the trunk. It seemed to run okay but with those red flags I walked. You see I never would buy a used car for myself ever I buy new I have since 86. My daughter had two used cars the one I bought her was good but she smashed that one up so she bought one herself and had nothing but problems with it. What I was younger I buy old cars myself but again nothing but headaches. typically I find when people are selling cars they're selling them for a reason, they have a problem that they don't want to fix so they want to give someone else their problem. Don't get me wrong there may be the odd used car out there that is good but a lot of them have problems and the ones I've looked at so far have all been no go. Real high mileage or obvious faults like no heat or no ac or windows don't roll down ect.

I could write a book already by how many cars I've looked at that are ready for the crusher and people are asking anywhere from 4 to $6,000 for. Looked at a Honda Civic had 304,000km on odometer. Was asking 2600. Air conditioning didn't work, busy was dinged up and a big crack in windshield. Pulled the dip stick, no oil registering on stick. Not insured so could not test drive. NEXT.....

That can happen if a disc is dropped on its edge which can cause a micro crack. When ur spins up bad shit can happen. Think of the mess a lasetdisk would cause if it came apart spinning at 1800 rpm. Or the carnage if your car engine let's go at high speed.

Just picked up a 5 disc changer from the thrift store for $10. The problem is that it will play through two disc just fine then start skipping a jumping tracks. Thinking it was dirty or dry rails, I fast forward through the disc and once again it played multiple disc just fine and started skipping again. A cracked gear sounds plausible because these gears only rotate once through several plays. After seeing this, I'm going to check on this possibility.
