Sony shipped five times more PlayStation 5 consoles than Microsoft managed with Xbox Series X/S in the last quarter.
That's according to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad, who's done some digging after Sony's latest financial report released yesterday.
The PS5 shipped 4.5m units in the last quarter, meaning Sony has now sold over 59m PS5 consoles in total. This is roughly equivalent to PS4 at the same point in its lifecycle.
Microsoft, meanwhile, has seen a 31 percent year-on-year drop in Xbox console sales, although specific figures have not been released.
Interestingly, PS5 sales dropped by 29 percent year-on-year, although console sales are up for the year as a whole.
Together it's a sign of slowing console sales across the industry, although overall sales for PlayStation consoles are significantly higher than Xbox Series X/S sales. That's matched by Sony's seeming inability to sell more consoles than the previous generation.
A year ago, between 1st January and 31st March 2023, the PS5’s sales exploded 219 per cent year-over-year. This is because Sony, as was widely publicised at the time, finally solved its pandemic-induced stock issues, and launched a gigantic global campaign to promote its new-gen console’s availability. This resulted in a record-breaking quarter for the brand, where it shipped 6.3 million consoles.
To put that into perspective: the PS4’s best-ever Q4 managed just 3.1 million units, less than half the abovementioned total. The 29 per cent decline in this most recent quarter is being compared to unprecedented success, then. In fact, the 4.5 million units that PS5 did ultimately ship is significantly higher than the PS4 record discussed above.
Circana’s Mat Piscatella noted on social media this week that PS5 is actually 7 per cent ahead of PS4 launch aligned in the United States, meaning it’s the rest of the world where the new-gen console is falling behind. And there’s a very simple explanation for that: Sony has actually increased the price of its flagship format in basically all regions outside of the United States.

According to Sony’s FY2023 earnings report, they are ready to splash a lot of money on acquiring new studios. It is important to note that while $11.5 billion may sound like a huge sum of money, not all of it will go toward PlayStation.
This sum will include acquisitions in various industries. For instance, Sony was recently rumored to be buying Paramount. Still, Sony Interactive Entertainment will benefit from the strategy.
The announcement has led to anticipations about which studios Sony plans on making its own. Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard shook up the industry for better or worse, but Sony is unlikely to pursue a merger of this scale.
It intends to be more selective with future buyouts. In the future, the gaming giant could increase its investment further in Kadokawa Group, the parent company of FromSoftware.
It could also look toward teams like Shift Up after Stellar Blade’s recent success.

I just got the PSP. Yes, that's what I am calling it. lol. The portal is awesome. I love how I can play my PS5 games. There is a stutter here and there, but it isn't ever bad. It is for only a second and it isn't in action. I first tried out Last of Us 2 and Elden Ring. No issues. Works great and looks awesome. I was initially worried about the quality of the screen, but it looks great. Before I bought it, I didn't know it was touchscreen which is a plus. It is also light weight. I just recently tried out Control and The Forest. Both play flawlessly. The setup is so easy. My only wish is that I wish it were OLED. 1080P OLED I am sure would have at least added an extra $100 So I understand the reasoning for the LCD.

FromSoft/Kadokawa would be a very solid buy for Sony. I wouldn't be surprised if they'll at least try to get a higher stake in FS. - Shift Up would also be another solid buy with how well SB did. Kadokawa is worth about 2.85-3B Shift Up is 1.5B ~ 4-5B for those 2 would be very solid. With Elden Ring being such a house-hold name now and only growing in popularity. I really hope Sony at least invests more in FS so Miyazaki can get the resources he needs to make more games. It'd also be such a great add to Sony's multi-media portfolio of tv shows and movies.

My theory on consoles in general having sales drop off across the board is that more people are starting to believe the better investment is in pc. On pc you can play the ps games within a couple years, you can play xbox games with game pass, and technically you can emulate switch. So although pc is more expensive up front it can account for 3 consoles in addition to everything else a pc does. Just my theory as I said, I have owned every playstation so far as well as various xbox and Nintendo consoles. Also own a pc. I believe pc is on the rise and as a result is taking from console

In terms of acquisition. If it would even be possible, I think if Sony could acquire EA it would be monumental. EA is a game company that has great catalog of games. However they have had quite the rough patch in the last decade I think they would definitely consider an offer

I personally am done with consoles, but PlayStation specifically, for sure. I had to send my PS5 to Sony for repair, and they sent it back still broken. I had it less than 6 months. Sony screwed the pooch hard on this one. I'll never waste my money on another one, that's for sure. Buy it at your own risk.

The issue I find with buying the series X is that, sure I like playing games on my TV so I play games on my ps5 in the lounge on it. However I also have a gaming PC, 99% of games that release on xbox release on pc, and if I pay for gamepass I can play these new games on PC, so the want and the need for buying the new xbox is non existent for me

I bought the originally Xbox on day 1 when I was in grade 8 and got the 360 and loved them and I was always an Xbox fan but then I got the Xbox One and hated it. took years off from gaming and got a switch, then I got a ps4 and it was amazing. now got the ps5 and I'm a huge PS fan. I will never have a Xbox ever again. my whole family are now PS users. Gamepass seems great but Ps plus is great a d I have more games to play then I have time.

I waited forever before I got my PS5 2years ago. So no hurry, not a big gamer and I suck at playing, I have two games that I am stuck in (help), anyway in the future I may try to get through, (stray & horzion forbidden)

Just not enough good games for me. Last game i played and actually had fun was War Zone...before that i loved games like Titan Fall 2, black ops 2 & 3, Vigor, The Division and GTA. These days my playstation stays Dusty.

I did not care for the PS4. It was all about the original PS3 for me. The only reason why I bought it was when I heard about Horizon zero Dawn and deus ex mankind divided and Naruto that was my only incentive to buy a PS4 if None of those came out I would’ve never bothered buying a PS4. I don’t know why you talk so highly of it because it wasn’t even compatible compatible with the PS3 because they still use Blu-ray. and all you care about it seems is resident evil and anything to do with zombies uncharted, and everything that I don’t really care for when I do play rise of the Ronin. I think it’s gonna be a great game because I’m into that Japanese honor sword ship stuff, and I also am a fan of ninja games and that’s my honest take on that so for me rise of the Ronin was a perfect IP same with stellar blade, but I would like to see some remix that they made for PS3 come to the PS five like heavenly sword they remade certain games on the PS4 version for the PS five but I’d rather see it for the PS five like ninja guided sigma and I wish they asked me fourth one included in that collection that they made only for the PSN store but I bought the physical copy because that’s how much of the fan I am that series and the only franchise that needs to be abolished is call of duty because that game should not have that much power unless you wanna actually join the military then I can understand why you like so much and as for destiny, if they actually had a story mode without playing strictly multiplayer, it would’ve done a lot better and also the reason Wyatt does so poorly is also because Destiny is always making updated version of the same disc bass game and coming out with the expansions for that disc for every single one of them that’s what it’s problem was during the multiplayer aspect of the expansions. They should’ve added a single player story with those same aspects that way they had more time to make DLC and that will tie them over if they had a single player campaign without the multiplayer aspect, and as you’re going through the story, that’s how you level up first just so you could get used to control and all that other good stuff and that should’ve done it for destiny and they should’ve had more classes too not just three different classes. They should’ve had like maybe 5 to 10 because there’s a vast ray of creaturesout there that we’re not even aware of and they only came out with three that you could actually use come on

Another reason console sales are down: - console demand grew during the pandemic, but there was a shortage of PS5s - then the PS5 shortage ended in 2023, so many finally got the chance to pick one up - now the pandemic is over, and most people who wanted one have got one = fewer PS5 sales in 2024
