It’s crazy how crisp 480fps and sometimes 960 is. The frozen waterfall is my favorite ever.

The 480 has become my go-to for slow motion. 240 is awesome as there's no discernible quality difference, but the slight drop in quality is worth double the frame rate at 480. 960 is neat but would never use it in anything for broadcast or full 1080.

Thanks for posting this. The split screens are especially useful in visualizing a side by side comparison of both the increasing image degradation and what each slow-mo frame rate looks like from one to the next. Just got my AX700 and have yet to try the S&Q mode.

Thanks for the feedback Dan! I got the AX700 primarily for the 120fps and 4k. The higher frame rates are just a bonus for me. 120fps and 240fps I have no qualms about using for broadcast-quality. Even 480fps I believe looks decent enough for most personal projects. The 960fps is just fun to mess around with :) Hope you enjoy your AX700 and don't forget to turn off stabilization when shooting in slow-motion!

@@EvanLudes I've now tried some 120fps slow motion and put it up on my channel. Have a look. Thanks, I did remember to shut off the stabilization. Although I was hand holding the camera, because I was having to do fast panning to follow the action of running dogs, I find that as a viewer, watching camera shake in slow motion is not as jarring or objectionable as watching shaky video in real time. One thing I want to improve on is focusing while shooting slow motion. If I'm not mistaken, slow mo must be shot with the camera in manual, and you loose some of the great auto focusing features of the phase detection if the camera is not on auto. Correct me if I'm wrong.

@@DanChanPiano Had to pull out my camera to check, but AF is still available in the 120fps S&Q mode but is not available in "super slow" 240fps and above modes. Still a very handy skill to practice!

Amazing and beautiful clips! So nice to look at. I have a 240hz display on my new laptop, sped this up to 8x on Dev Tools, and looked at your 240fps clips in detail! Almost completely real-looking. But I would love to see the 480fps and 960fps at 480hz and 960hz too! 😂 Someday...

Great video. I was interested in this camera and was curious to know if when filming in the 960 fps mode if there's a time limit. Sort-of how the newer phones say they can shoot 960 fps but its only for 1 second records. I was looking for a camera that can do 960 fps but for a longer period of time. Thanks
@EvanLudes
@EvanLudes 4 жыл бұрын
You get approximately 3 seconds of recording at 960fps, which obviously turns into a MUCH longer clip when played back at 30fps. I found the specs here: helpguide.sony.net/cam/1710/v1/en/contents/TP0001492413.html

All good health. Dear author or knowledgeable commentators, can you please tell me if it is possible to perform forced focusing on this camera by half-pressing the "start" button (or by pressing some other button) as it happens on hybrid cameras (cameras with the ability to shoot video). Thanks.

Hey! Thanks for your question. I got my camera out this evening and autofocus isn't available in slow motion modes. During regular video recording, you can either choose autofocus or manual focus. There are also options for face detection where focus stays locked on to faces. Here's a link to the Sony guide on it helpguide.sony.net/cam/1710/v1/en/contents/TP0001492358.html

Thx, I really liked the split screen to compare, next time consider something faster, like popping water balloons in the comparisons as well... Fireworks or explosives would be nice to see too =)

That's a great idea! Some faster subjects would certainly be good to compare frame rate. For this I was going for some easily repeatable clips to compare image quality. Thanks for watching and commenting, glad to have you here!

Is there a time limit on how much it can record at once? I thought I heard somewhere that 960 was limited to 3 seconds

Correct. The "super slow" modes of 240, 480, and 960 are limited. I know in the manual it says the actual amount of time for each. 120fps has no limit though.

Would you say medium to tight shots is acceptable for 480fps?
@EvanLudes
@EvanLudes 4 жыл бұрын
I think it'll depend what you're shooting. If you're shooting something with high contrast or sharp lines you're going to notice some aliasing. That being said, I won't hesitate to use 480fps in personal projects I plan to show at 1920x1080.

I wouldn't say water proof but certainly water-resistant. I wouldn't leave it out in the rain much like a DSLR but if it gets wet now and then, just dry it down and it'll be fine. Mine got plenty wet briefly while shooting some firefighting helicopters yesterday.

Did you grade the flag at 960? It almost looks better than the lower FPS
@EvanLudes
@EvanLudes 5 жыл бұрын
No grade on any of it. If it looks sharper it's because of the aliasing/artifacts. When you switch to 960fps it actually digitally crops the frame in so it's an upscaled 1080 (file still says 1920x1080) which might be why it looks a little more pixelated/sharp.

G'day & thanks for this video👍👍 When I can afford, I'm still looking at getting this camera. I want to upgrade to 4K,have the higher fps for slo-mo & have the inbuilt filters. I currently have the cx625 which is only HD. But will keep it handy, as it has a brilliant 30x optical zoom. Cheers🍻 ✌️ 🇦🇺🦘

The higher FPS and built-in NDs definitely make this a versatile cam! Only thing one could really ask for would be better low-light performance, but if that was my main concern, I'd probably look into the Sony mirrorless system. You definitely won't be disappointed with the optical zoom on this!

Yeah in comparison, the 120fpd hardly feels like 4x slower than real-time lol. The 480fps is great for slow speeds without being completely degraded, though I usually wind up shooting 240fps more often than anything since the quality 100%.

@EvanLudesWeatherNatureVideo I have a GoPro Hero 12 which does decent TimeLapses/Hyperlapses so I could probably mount it to the AX700 to get a similar perspective. I love my R5 & R6 buy sometimes it would be fun to go out & shoot with a lighter bag. If I get the AX700, I could pack the camcorder, Go Pro 12, Insta360 X3 & my Mini 4 Pro drone in one medium sized bag with all attachments & extra batteries and still be lighter than my R5 kit matched with any one of the others. Don't get me wrong... The R5 serves me very well for work. And I'm sure the AX700 will be used for work often.. But for me when I'm putzin around getting clips.. often something like the camcorder would be better.. especially for slow mo that the R5 can't do. And if I want to get that night shot look for a creepy vibe.

It's perfect for exactly that. Video, at a wide array of focal lengths and frame rates. The built in NDs are awesome. Stabilization is great. And the zoom doesn't leave much ti be desired. I ought to do a video on some of the other features :)
