I saw several test, and I after all videos I saw and must to agree with you. Is something weird in the video quality of fx30. I remember the same with the Nikon d810, everyone was saying that the quality was stunning but I remembered a lot of pictures blurry, after a while they discovered that the mirror create a shock that produce this. The FX30 is the first Sony Alpha based camera (A1 actually too) that doesn't have any sharpening applied by default. You can still add sharpening in-camera or better in post. Older cameras have lots of sharpening applied that can't really be removed in post. With the FX30 and A1 you finally have a choice. I hope that NR can be disabled in future updates as well, that would push the Alpha line closer to the Venice.

I own both cameras. I love my A6400 for photos, but as far as videography, it no longer suits me. Nobody looking for a cinematic look and buying a pocket cinema camera is looking for over-sharpened visuals. This is why log formats often have a detail value of -7 by default.
@PeterKoperdan
@PeterKoperdan Жыл бұрын
This "issue" is most likely due to FX30 and A6400 having a different amount of default sharpening applied. This sharpening is almost certainly not applied as a final step to an already "baked" image. Sharpening is almost certainly applied during the demosaicing process before the RAW data is "baked" into the final image. And I am not talking about creating imaginary/fake detail, but about extracting detail from the RAW data during the demosaicing process. Any pixel peeper trying to squeeze the most of their RAW images in Lightroom knows what I am talking about. This basically means that with a different sharpening setting FX30 footage could have the same amount of detail as A6400. Lady, there is a simple way to find out - test different sharpening levels for both cameras and see what you get. So far you don't seem to acknowledge this whole technical detail ;-) You may be an old school Mac expert, but cameras are their own thing (especially high end videocentric cameras). There are many settings and variables to consider and it's easy to overlook even the simplest things...

I recently bought an fx30 and also got disturbed and dissapointed by the muddy quality in Full HD. (I didn't know Sony's FHD was SO BAD!) They also messed up the codecs for FHD, one is 16mb (which is too little) and the other is 50mb (which is too much for FHD). I compare with my older Lumix camera where the FHD is exactly what it needs to be - good. :) Pity that noone is making real reviews, most of the youtubers are simply fan boys (not having real experties and not done proper tests with the camera), but trying to live off affiliate links.

I still can't believe how is it that it's almost the same as the FX3 (which is so expensive) and I don't like it, It won't fit my professional workflow. If you want some more food for thought (or to use it in your honest videos) I can enumerate some of the problems: poor ibis (main reason why I can't use it) - sony cameras are obviously only for gimbal users ;d muddy FHD; the exposure tools don't work properly - with the histogram and zebras I expose my image correctly and when I get back and see it on the computer, the highlights are way blown out; you can't use it as a photo camera, some simple photos maybe but no flash support, no burst mode, no mechanical shutter; video assist functions are limited on the screen - you can only have one of the following: either for focus, level or histogram, you can't have multiple assist features at the same time; the noise is also somewhat pronounced and visible, maybe there's less noise reduction idk; Maybe the could be more stuff, but these are my main findings about this camera. Most cameras are way too shape for my tastes, and imo, when it comes to any kind of potential “cinematic” footage. The FX30 has bad low light capabilities, which everyone should know by now. The reason probably why you're getting noise is maybe because you have poor lighting and/or the wrong settings. If you try again with better lighting and not with the factory settings you will see the difference. You may be also using a PP that doesn't get the most colours out of it. The ZV-E10 was way better than the a6400 WITH the right setting and GOOD lighting. The FX30 also need different accesories such as external recording for 16 bit. The a6400 at it's best vs the FX30 at it's best is the samething as a hotwheels vs a honda civic or something. I said honda civic since there is way better cameras but for a higher price.

The BM camera was noticeably more detailed image. There is also another youtube postser comparing her A6400 and the FX30 and the 6400 is noticably more detailed. Undeniable. It's not about in camera sharpening. Actually saw another post from another male youtuber..compared against the A7C the FX30 IS clearly soft, just like the other woman said and demonstrated. No way around it. Meanwhile i spent time and money researching to buy the best glass that i could afford and now should use on a softish body and tell myself it's OK because, hey, "it's cinematic". No thanks.So why research glass to begin with? Why not just buy any soft junk? Fooslish logic. Might as well shoot on a 1080 camera. You can always soften an image to taste -but if the detail isn't there to begin with.....forget it. It's not a question of saying well, it's 10 bit, great dynamic range, codecs, yada yada yada. I want all THAT of course, but ALSO at least the resolving power of the older comeras - or better, since it's more money $$ and it's a newer body. Not 3 steps forward and one backwards.. Was going to buy one..but..Maybe a used GH5 instead.

I've got an A6600 and FX30... Keep meaning to do some tests. When I do I'll report my findings. I would assume the A6600 should deliver similar results as an A6400. Although I haven't compared them directly, I can't say I've been disappointed with the FX30.

@@morgonaut Well I did some testing between my A6600 and FX30, here's what I found: RAW/JPG photos are pretty identical in sharpness, which is good, this means that the softness isn't a physical problem. Now, in terms of video, I tested the A6600 using Picture profile, SLog3.SGamut3.cine with detail set to -7. On the FX30 I ran three clips, one using Cine-EI, the other two using Picture profile with detail at -7 and 0. Basically, yes, the FX30 is softer in Cine-EI and Picture profile detail -7. I have my samples here: i.imgur.com/rIMKn0X.png & i.imgur.com/nDKwWah.jpg FX30 on left, A6600 on right. There is a difference but not that significant in this case I would say. But then I used a 35mm Sigma Art so I was pretty close to the chart.

Josh, I'm glad you did your own testing. 10bit Slog format on A6600 is not good idea, do what I did = HLG which is same on both and you would have to come to same results

@@morgonaut Alrighty, Just ran a test using HLG and then no picture profile at all. I see no obvious differences in sharpness/detail, at least, not enough to concern me. Profile settings were the same for HLG, including in the detail settings. Samples: HLG i.imgur.com/qS7r1Ev.jpg & PP-Off: i.imgur.com/3AITwNr.jpg At this point I'm not sure why you had such a large difference, other than perhaps an actual faulty camera.
