This an excellent video-tutorial for sony users (and not only). However it is very important when talking about lenses and focal length not to forget the type of camera we are using. If it is a FULL FRAME or an APS-C or even a MFT. Becouse in many videos some guys present different lenses (focal length) , lets say for example a 50mm, but they never told us that they were using a GH5 (MFT) which have a crop factor of x2. Thus, a 50mm in GH5 is like a 100mm in FF and someone has to mention this. Thank you for this video. Nice and technical correct.

Hi David, since I see no answer yet..I use as well on my A7SII AI, AIS and G lenses, as well as Tokina, Konica, Zeiss and even Helios, MIR and Fuji vintage lenses and I´ve tried many adaptors. From the Metabones top notch down to the cheapest ones found on Amazon. For the job you need them to do on a FF camera, Ill stick with the Commlite or Fotodiox adaptors which are half way compared to the expensive metabones and the cheapest. They are good build quality and do the job just very fine. Hope it helped.
@FollowTheSun137 жыл бұрын
Native lenses on a camera are supposed to work the best way since they are designed for it. Hence, it doesn't mean you can't adapt other party lenses on your camera and obtain results almost as good (and some even better). For much less than what Sony asks for their lenses (some times you don't even have a choice and you have to go to the Zeiss series or G master, since some focal lengths and speeds are yet not available elsewhere at a Pro-amateur price point). That being said, Nikon is one of the best lens manufacturers ever, and the range of choice you have with them is huge. They still manufacture lenses that they started to on the 80´s cause there´s simply nothing to change on them. You can get yourself a pretty good damn kit of old lenses (from the 70`s, 80´s, 90´s) which will allow you to have a professional kit for not much more than 1000 US, and we are speaking about covering from Ultrawide to Tele up to 200 (and most of them fast lenses too as the 50mm 1.4, the 20-35 2.8D, the 85mm 1.8 AI or the 80-200 2.8ED). This lenses are marvelous jewelry manufactured with excellence that nowadays has been lost almost everywhere, or pay above 1000 US for each lens to get something new equivalent. You loose autofocus, face recognition etc, but you can save lots of money, lots of space and still have a Pro Kit. Sorry for the extension
@PillowFightMania7 жыл бұрын
the reason why he doesn't mind adapting the Nikon lens is because there's no autofocus, and using an adapter without electronic connections usually doesn't pose any problems.

For anyone watching this, Sigma has come out with a 16mm (24mm with 1.5 crop factor of a6500) f1.4 lens that provides a pretty wide focal length and better lowlight performance at roughly 40% less cost than the Sony 10-18mm f4. You would, however, have to give up the ability to go to use the other focal lengths (like 10mm ultrawide). Sigma also has a 30mm (45mm with crop factor) f1.4 that is well reviewed as well. It's not a perfect replacement for 50mm focal length, but I do find it workable for similar kinds of shots. Edited: for clarity
@BrandonLiUnscripted6 жыл бұрын
Please don't mislead people by comparing different focal length lenses as if they are equivalent. 16mm and 10mm are nothing alike. Neither are 30mm and 50mm.
@davidroemmele3136 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response, and sorry if my post was misleading people. I've edited it to try to be more clear. I have watched all of your videos and purchased the 10-18mm f4 (and a lot of other gear) based on your recommendation in this video. When I was starting out with a very small budget, the 10-18mm f4 was very expensive compared to most other APS-C lenses for the a6500 and I found it to be less versatile. It's the lens that stays in my bag (or at home) the most often and would've been money better spent elsewhere to handle the need for a wide shot at night without dealing with significant noise issues. I would have (and imagine others would have) been able to cover more situations with the Sigma lenses I mentioned at a lower cost. Of course, the 16mm is not as wide as the 10-18mm; however, when every $ counts and a person can only afford 1 or 2 lenses, the sigmas are inexpensive, sharp, and fast. The 16mm does reasonably well to provide wide shots in a variety of conditions. And, you're right: the 30mm (45mm with 1.5 crop) on a6500 is not exactly equivalent to the 50mm on full frame; I would only add that the 35mm (52.5mm with crop) is also not exactly equivalent either. Both lenses are pretty close to achieving a 50mm full frame look, and "close enough" for me due to some needed flexibility when working with a tighter budget. Please consider incorporating Sigma into your lens reviews as new shooters on a budget can really get some great results from them.
@louisgeorgiou32136 жыл бұрын
David, please stop spreading fake news. Everyone knows that the sigma 30mm is nothing like the Sony 50mm and give complete different shots. To even compare them shows how much of a noob you are in the world of videography.

The best video I have seen about lenses for these cameras. Straight to the point and after my investigations from numerous other sources I think you have all this correct. Currently I am adapting Canon lenses but need at least one Sony for the reasons you have mentioned. The 35mm will likely be my next purchase.

+Ryan Stark 35mm is good for people but you might want something else wider too

Hi. Long time before reply but I have bought no Sony lenses (yet). I have been taking advantage of being able to use vintage lenses. Nikons, Yashinons, Asahi Takumars, Carl Zeiss, etc. I understand completely why you have that Nikon. In particular the Bokehs on the old lenses are great. Some are surprisingly sharp and they often have a very nice 3D pop. I'm still concentrated on stills at the moment though. Buying some vintage lenses has the advantage of trying various focal lengths before you buy new lenses. The old lenses are built like tanks and don't lose any value if you sell.

This was one of the most useful videos I've found about the Sony range so thanks so much! Thinking about buying an A6500, but wasn't sure what lenses to get with it. Feel much better after watching this! Thanks again
