Thank you for the reviews and comparisons. I just ordered from Amazon the Sony MDR-7506. I understand it's industry standard and used for more professional purposes at times, but man I just like the classic look, the wire, and the it being able to fold. I was going to use these headphones for music, watching movies at night time and listening to podcasts.

Unfortunately my 7506's only lasted just under 2 years. I barely used them, nor did I mistreat them. One day, I put them on to do some mixing and the right side went completely out. Now, also owning the AT M40fs since 2018, they're still alive and kicking. I used them more, resulting in the pads being very worn. They still sound good regardless (not like the Sonys).

I have had the SOny 7506 for about 7 years now and they are great. A pro tip for larger ears is to get angled earpads.. Fits perfectly around my ears and I can wear them through my workday and gaming after work. I don't like the headband as much, but the clamping force takes the strain off the headband, but not perfect.

A long time ago I used to record rock vocals with these and liked them. I might have a bias, but they are still my most used headphones for everything. They sound good, have a profile that is suggestive of how you would EQ the human voice, are light, and the cord is long enough to move around with.

Really, they're all good... but I default to the Sonys for most "work related things".... Audio-Techincas might be a little better with natural sound quality, but the way they are built makes it so you have to be a little more careful not to break the pivot points for the ear pieces....which do rotate around more. if your careful with your things that might not be an issue.

I don't own any $200-$100 headphones to have any meaningful feedback, but rtings.com does a lot of tests on headphones (like sound profiles, which manufactures don't typically publish). @DotDotMatrix
@DotDotMatrix 3 жыл бұрын
I think they all sound very good... Sony’s are the lightest and the one’s I use the most (especially if I’m wearing them for hours), so that is my personal pick. Sennhieser’s have a short stiff cord and are the heaviest, which can be limiting, but they do feel more immersive. AudioTechnica’s are somewhere in between, if you want to take the middle road and like having multiple cords to plug into the headphones then they might be a good choice.

I actually did a video "EarPods, AirPods vs Headphones" ...I was comparing them to Sennhieser's (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqa7mKWwqd-tjZo) ...The gist was Headphones have more low end response, and more immersion... the sound is covering your ears and it feels wider, as its not just being piped directly into the ear.

Which one of these do you think would be best for tracking and mixing vocals? I've heard the Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphones are a solid pair and comfortable, but they don't fold down at all or pivot for easy one ear listening. Just curious about your thoughts. Great video btw!
@DotDotMatrix

Sonys are my most used for working, easy to slip on and off, durable... Ear pieces don’t flip but it’s easy to pull one behind your ear AudioTechnica is good but build quality is less, it’s easy to break off the ear pieces if your not conscious of how they move and can easily flip upside down, but ear pieces do flip out... If i din’t have the Sonys I would be using ATs. Sennheiser is the biggest, and while ear pieces flip out I use them for “non-work” listing… the cord is short and stiff and I prefer lighter headphones. They all have a sound profile that is neutral enough that any of them can be used for mixing along with visual tools for maintaining consistency.

After going through many pairs of headphones, i'm starting to think the MDRs with their exposed cables are the safest for said cables. Your first thought might be they are exposed and easy to damage, but the reality is, when manufacturers try to hide the cables, they tend to pass them through delicate articulated areas that slowly but surely bend and destroy those cables. Not so with the MDRs. As long as you don't treat your headphones like absolute garbage, those floating wires will probably last you more than others. So i'm not surprised your old pair still works after 2 decades. Hard to go wrong with them. Even recently i threw away a pair of Sennheiser well above 100 bucks, for exactly this reason. Shitty wires.

I think the AKG 240s and the JVC HA-RX900s match up well with these and you can get them for under 70 dollars. The AKGs have great detail and separation of instruments but a little lacking in bass. The JVCs have a more full bodied sound with solid bass but not as detailed as the AKGs.

@@marvinmurakami8828 I have read that ath-50x and dt 770 have not natural sound, they have boosted bass and trebles or so. I am really confused. It is crazy hard to decide. Recently I have tested AKG K361. They have great and detailed lows, very pleasant. But vocals seems little bit in the background. I have used Shure SRH440 and they are really different than many closed-back headphones, they have more mids and highs. But the build quality is weird. Now they have introduced upgraded model SRH440A. Build quality seems very improved but sound is totally different. According tests they have more bass than any other headphones we were writing here about, so probably these will be really not for me. So probably I should try Sony, but I am really affraid after those AKG which should have been neutral too :D

@DotDotMatrix
@DotDotMatrix 3 жыл бұрын
Because they can articulate around in so many directions I can seen how someone could get confused about their position and force them in the wrong direction (especially in a dark room). They fold up really easy, but the pivot points are encased in light plastic... I had overlooked that the Sennheisers pivot in a similar way, but it was less obvious cause of their heavier build and it is also less comfortable to wear them with 1 ear pieces turned out. Don't know if Audio-Techs have changed in the last 8 months, but I would be weary of the strength of those joints if I were throwing them in a bag and taking them places where I would be rushing to setup and generally being less careful with my gear.

Never used BTR5, but a quick read make it seem like it's not really a device that has the aim of coloring sound like something that is tube driven or a simulation, but rather has more subtle controls... There's an EQ so that can help make something easier to listen to... @DotDotMatrix

I don't see it as a Sony issue, they were used a lot in those 20 years. Some headphones might be built to last longer... I'm sure using them for recording where they are sometimes exposed to audio spikes, like if the gain on a mic is too loud and you can hear the headphones screaming across the room shortens their lifespan. The good thing about them is the same model is still in-production, so you can repurchase that same sound, but they are also user serviceable too.

In general the Sonys are my favorite for working and general listening (so...90% of the time I'm using the Sonys), but I do like to switch between different headphones for enjoyment...or just cause I don't feel like unplugging things and moving them around...and I thought I would use different headphones to the cross-check the way a mix sounds.... but I never do.

Is m40x better than JBL Live 650BTNC??? Pls reply...
@DotDotMatrix
@DotDotMatrix 3 жыл бұрын
I've never used JBL Lives but it looks like for the extra $100 you're getting a bluetooth option and noise canceling which the m40x doesn't have. I don't use those features, so it depends on if you listen in noisy environments and if you do it would be better to compare "neutral balanced noise canceling headphones"

Which Sony ones are degraded? Old or new ones?
@DotDotMatrix
@DotDotMatrix 5 ай бұрын
If this is about the earpads comment... the new ones have started to lose the shiny stuff that covers the foam... it comes off in black flecks and once it really starts going it's easier to just rip it off, so I'm not taking it with me every time I wear them... the pads can be replaced, but I didn't do it when it happened with my old Sonys. I do wear them a lot... probably 10x more than my other headphones, so it's not like they are cheaply made.

@@DotDotMatrix No its a comment on sound and distortion you were talking about. I mean which of them has distortion and their drivers got degraded? New or old ones?
@DotDotMatrix
@DotDotMatrix 5 ай бұрын
Old ones distort low frequencies, I think it started happening after 10 to 15 years.... Either from too much input when recording or just age. New ones are still good.

Love the video man :) I moved from a Superlux hd681 evo to a Philips SHP9600 which are open backs for gaming. I've been very interested in the Sony MDR for a long time due to it being more flat and more detailed. Is the move from open backs to closed backs that much noticeable in gaming?
@DotDotMatrix
@DotDotMatrix 3 жыл бұрын
I've never needed open back headphones. If it's just for the experience of playing games it shouldn't matter much unless you want to hear the exterior sound in the room like people taking to you. I tend to view headphones as a tool for focusing that can diminish outside distractions.

I've had all these, and the HD280's are by far the best. They all suck though, especially the m40x's and I would personally instead get some 58X jubilees/6XX's or Beyer DT770's.

I bought this unit. It sounds like shit. Even my unprofessional AKG K-52 sounds much more reference than HD-280 Pro. In addition, the price of AKG K-52 is a third of HD-280 Pro price. The only advantage of HD-280 Pro is better isolation.

I was clearing out a house and had paint cans stored next to my car, but forgot about them when I was backing up while turning ,and as a result the front left tire exploded an old primer can that instantly adhered to the sun heated car. Most of it was on my tire, so I painted white walls on all my tires so it would match. In real life most people would comment on how cool my tires looked and not even mention the bird crap paint job.
