When the "pleather" ear cups on my 7506 headphones cracked after a few years, I replaced them with the velour ear cushions from Byerdynamic (forgot the model #). Now the 7506 headphones are much more pleasant to have around the ears, when the weather turns warmer.

I've worked extensively on both the 770's and the V6's and then later the 7506's (V6's being the older brother of the 7506's, originating in 1985) the Sony's have my vote, the DT770's are more enjoyable to listen on and sound closer to what I would expect from a pair of speakers, but I often would find myself missing critical details, (I'm a classical engineer) I'd miss bad edits or pops in the audio, never with the V6/7506's, you hear everything with those, That high frequency boost shows EVERY dang detail (If I'm not incorrect I believe they were intentionally designed that way for that reason?), when the V6's were discontinued I bought 2 more of them because I'm so so used to them and honestly would need to spend way more money and time than I would like just trying to find a pair of headphones that can compete/adjusting to a new sound profile.

DT770 have boosted highs too just different frequencies. They have peaks around 7k and 7506 have peaks at 4k and 5k. These frequencies are more important for speech and such. Same story with DT990. They have all the highs elevated so that you can focus on that range.
@techmed-rainer
@techmed-rainer 7 ай бұрын
To my experience, the 7506s only seem to be more detailed because of their elevated high frequencies. That's a common misconception. Don't get me wrong, the 7506s are not bad at all. There is a reason why they are so popular in the USA. In Europe, you will find more often Beyerdynamic or Sennheiser headphones.

Sony 7506/V6 are truly amazing, you really do hear every last minute detail. Introduced 1985 to coincide with Sony's new digital recorders. Sony's are tanks, my first set bought in 1989, still going strong, incredibly reliable. The Sony reliability is VERY WELL KNOWN IN INDUSTRY - keep eye out fl- you'll see Sony's EVERYWHERE, far more than DT770. This guy is wrong about build quality: Sony has aluminum ear cups, metal hinges, metal headband strip. Cord and connector/3.5mm screw-on adapter super quality. Hangers thick plastic. Guy's also wrong about replacement parts, everything available for Sony, they even include parts list/diagram w 7506. Yes, pads flake after 3-5 years (depending on usage), but smart move is immediately buy velour pads (just like DT770 pad material, but black so no chance of staining - light gray is silly...) I'm going to try DT770 (think I'll be disappointed, but hope not) I will say Audio Technica ATH-M50 (older, fixed cord version, got deal used) were really awful, muddy all around, and bass very boomy.) Recommend start w Sony, use them a good while, will always be useful as extra cans if you wind up needing another and get Beyerdynamic.

Both fabulous headphones. Bayer is king when it comes to being TRULY closed back. The Sony's ear cups sit ON your ear if God blessed you with large ears which in turn allows unwanted bleed. But for me the Sony's win hands down for pulling out every single instrument if speakers are not an option.

Just put thicker pads on the MDR 7506 tbh. I just got a really good deal on a pair for $55 off eBay and the seller included the nice thick Yaxi earpads they were using with them. Cool design too, with a red and blue ring around the base of each pad.

I have had the Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO 80 Ohm headphones for 7 and a half years, I bought them mainly for listening to music although I have used them for other purposes. A while ago I tried the Sony MDR-7506 and although they offer good sound quality, I still prefer the DT770 PRO, I love how they sound, the level of detail, soundstage and instrumental separation.

Great video! I used the Sony MDR-V6's for over 20 years and they died on me. Now I'm getting a pair of the DT 770s. I love my V6's, bummed that they don't work any more, but really looking forward to the 770s. Do make lots of audio videos in DaVinci Resolve and mix live too, so I'm looking forward to trying the 770s. Thanks man!

Great review vid Brodie. I run a pair of 7506's in my office. They sound great for most applications in my opinion. Definitely 1000x better than most consumer USB headsets from Logitech and Plantronics. I did upgrade from a pair of Sony MDR-V150's, which are a good piece of kit don't get me wrong, but the 7506's sound so much "richer". And BTW, I'm a Sony fanboy, so take that into account. 😀

I own both. For Djing and music and remote video work the 7506s (or better the V6s) are the way to go. If you sweat the 770s get STINKY and gross.And the foam and plushness turns into a disgusting mess. I also constantly pinch my fingers on the 770s. That Big clunky hinge can bite your fingers. OUCH! The foam is the weak link on the Sony's but the after market foam (lamb's skin) is the way to go. For my ear the oval shape of the 7506s fits perfectly and doesn't pinch the top of my ears unlink the MDR-700s. Also when DJing many times you have 1 ear on the headphones and the other on a monitor or someone is talking to you, The 770s are terrible for 1 ear off. Also durability throwing the Sony's in and out of a bag, plugging them in and out of different misers and cameras, etc. taking them all over the world, the Son'y's are nearly bulletproof and way easier to find if you need another pair quickly. Maybe the 770s would be better podcasting and in a studio. But out in field and in club or festival I think the 7506s / V6s are they way to go.

Well done, thank you! It's always interesting to see differences in preference between the USA and Europe. In America, the 7506s are really popular. As many musicians and engineers are used to them, they carry on this tradition. Over her in Europe, they are used aswell, but more often, you will find the Beyerdynamic 770 or their later versions or Sennheisers like the HD 280 pro. Since there is an increasing number of home studios and KZbin channels, the Sonys become more popular in Europe because the big popular channels are from America.

Will use the dt 770 with 32 ohms for gaming and music. They sound very wide, feel good on the head in that you dont feel them/forget they exist and that is a big factor for me, i have iems that sound similary good but dont like the fit of them, for on the go ok but at home pls... Beyerdynamic has made a great product back in the 80s and that its still around says enough. My Logitech g pro x feel and sound quite bad in comparison. First time holding the dt 770, yep thats quality, made in germany it says on the plastic that holds the cups. feels solid. greetings from germany.

DT770 are a far more competent build. Better drivers and more careful implementation, better quality control and sturdier construction, easier to repair. Sonys have channel mismatch and their drivers are the cheapest thing you can find. So Beyers end up playing lowest bass and their breakup is at 7k instead of 4 because their diaphragm is stiffer. With good EQ preset Beyers can be made flat between 20Hz and 10k while Sonys struggle with bass and don't have the manufacturing repeatability to fix them with EQ. Consequently Beyers have some actual stereo imaging.

Dude...I don't know where you get your information, but as a professional musician for over 50 years, I can tell you, that you can also replace every piece on the 7506's, and the 7506's are much more popular in recording studios for musician monitors, than the DT-770, although they are certainly very good in that role, but you're tearing down the 7506's for no good reason. I agree the pads on the 770's are much, much better, that's a given, but most people will tell you the 770's have sibilance issues starting around 7KHz and go up to 10kHz, whereas the 7506's are pretty flat overall without any glaring highlights. You can purchase third party ear pads and my 7506's have the 770 factory pads on them, which makes the for a much richer sound and no touching your ears. I've owned a half dozen 7506's and 3 770's so I'm quite familiar with both.

Three great headphones (I Do Not have the 250ohm DT770) if I had to only take one on a desert island, give me the 7506, but all 3 are great. the 80ohm and 7506 really show you bad music files, and they glorify your good audio files. 32ohm everything sounds too good so you can't trust it
@rhalfik

Yeah 32 ohm is a consumer variant. They lack a dip at 200Hz and have more bass.
@rhalfik
@rhalfik Жыл бұрын
Hey I like your comparison but I just want to let you know that Rtings doesn't use a professional compensation in their graphs. They have a consumer target, which isn't "flat" or neutral as we call it in headphone world. Rtings compensation has a few db pf bass boost, so I'f you're looking for gauging that bass, you should add at least 3db shelf in your mind from 100db down. That or just disregard their compensated FR graph and go straight to the raw measurement, which they store in their DB. You can clearly see that both headphones have boosted bass. 32 ohm DT770 has as much as 9dB (!) of boost. If you're looking for more professional approach to measurements, I'd advise you to use sources like inearfidelity. Rtings have some things going for them but they're not serious with pro gear. I mean just be honest with yourself. Do they really sound flat to you? Make a quick mix on them and then compare it on loudspeakers. You'll see you mixed the bass low. The only variant that doesn't have boosted bass is the old 250 ohm one. Interestingly enough the difference is in earpads. You can put the cushions from 32 on 250 and the bass will be boosted. As the earpads flatten from use, They get more midrangey which is also something to bare in mind when using them. This applies also to earpad rolling. You added new earpads to your Sonys but did you notice the sound changed? Earpads are the second major contributor to sound in headphones right after the driver.

Hi, Ive had the 7506's for 3 years now...and Ive only ever had a tiny amount of sound leakage while recording vocals in the studio, maybe a click every now and again. I bought the 250 ohm 770's yesterday ( 2 pairs ) and yes they sound way better overall. I got set up and ready to record a vocal......OUCH! the bleed was instantly noticeable and very intrusive... I tried both pairs and got the same amount of bleed on the Vocal track...So, I sent both pairs back this morning and have purchased some new pads for my 7506's..Maybe when reviewing similar items in future, you could include something like an overall noise leakage test when recording with an open Mic? Nice vid though

Good comparison, nice to have feedback from someone who constantly uses the headphones in question. But I have to say, every time that "Subscribe" button with the obnoxiously loud noise popped up, I reached for the mouse to click away from the video, then decided I'd stick it out because surely, he wouldn't do that again and I really wanted to see the video. Then I spent the next 30 seconds thinking about how annoyed I was about it and had to rewind to hear what I missed. Then, you did it again. And again.
