Sony on a Budget - Sony NEX 5r Review

The Sony NEX 5r was released back in 2012. How does it hold up today?

Even though I own some of the latest Sony full frame cameras I still love the Nex-5r. I carry it with my everywhere with a little 25mm f1.2 manual prime lens. Best size/value of any camera imo. I find the image quality quite pleasing.

Hi Steven- great review. I believe you can configure the controls on the back of the NEX-5R so you have the full exposure triangle at your fingertips at a touch of a button (noticed you were digging thru the menus for aperture, ISO settings etc)...so Navi dial on top for aperture settings, round dial ring on back for shutter speed and the dedicated ISO button on the right of that. I bought this camera when release and still like it. I added a prime Sony 50mm and the pop-in OLED viewfinder which really helps with photography.

Thanks - That portion showing the menus was just to illustrate how different the old NEX menus were compared to the newer A6000 line of menus.

Correction... The NEX-5T, which came out the following year, also had hybrid autofocus. It also upgraded from the NEX-5N by adding better video (1080/60p) and the addition of NFC. Why does no one ever mention this camera?

The onboard mic sounds pretty good for what it is. But I sure wish it had a real mic jack.

This is coming very popular in mid 2020. Ive purchased one 1 week ago for the same price (120.00 + 9 shipping) I am impressed with the quality coming from this camera in 1080p. The only bad thing about mine is that it is a PAL only and I can only record in 25 or 50 fps which sucks for night shooting, i get that annoying flickering coming from the lights. My tips on getting a better look is to turn down the saturation, sharpness and contrast and add it in post. This camera paired with a sony 10-18 oss and you have a great vlog combo.

Hi Michael - have you found the app that lets you change from PAL to NTSC? All the DPReview forums that mention it are from 2017. I don’t think it’s available anymore. And yeah, I’ve been using mine in Portrait picture profile with saturation minus three, contrast minus one and sharpness at zero. I’m starting to really like this camera the more I use it. Next video is NEX 5r vs A6000. It’s a lot better than I initially thought.

Hi Steven, i really like the color setting you set for this video. You mentioned you chose Portrait picture profile, does this mean you choose the mode “SCN” and select “portrait” then record the video? I am not able to find the option to adjust the contrast and sharpness in the camera.. can you advise if you adjust it in the camera or adjust it using the software on computer ?

Steven Heise Hi, I did find the open memories tweak and also updated the firmware to the latest on my nex5r, how ever the app store does not appear on my camera and it is still in pal mode. I’ve tried everything.

Personally my favorite Nex cameras out the series are the NEX 6 & NEX 7. Thos are great budget a6000 cameras especially the 7 with the mic jack unlike the a6000 but still has a very similar body.

You can change the iso from the control wheel. Maybe you need to update the firmware, my Nex 5R have the 1.03 version of firmware. Even my Nex 3 is a totally different camera with the latest firmware, the 05

Hello have you used gimbal with this camera I am not able to connect my camera with the gimbal as it goes usb mode or says check the device connectivity I am not able directly clikc pictures from gimbal bcoz the camera dosn connect what should I do can you help me?

The autofocus on all the NEX cameras are terrible no matter what lens you put on it. They use the first generation of phase detect autofocus which is very slow and has heavy focus breathing in comparison to newer Sony cameras. But on the plus side, Almost all the best Sony cameras still use the E-Mount system so i would feel comfortable buying any lenses you want for this camera. If you ever upgrade in the future to a better Sony camera you can still use them all.

I prefer the NEX-5N, the touchscreen is capacitive, which is much better for manual focus lenses, much easier to quickly magnify and nail focus.

BTW Steven, how did you manage yo get great audio quality? Is this audio straight out of the camera or did you tweak it in post?

None of the NEX cameras ever worked as a webcam unless you connect the camera to your PC using the HDMI output on the camera to the PC with a USB/HDMI capture card. Which are cheap, i bought a USB HDMI capture card from walmart for like 15$.

For real. the only thing the NEX5R and a A5100 or A6000 has in common is the mount for the lens. everything else is way worse. There is a reason you can buy a 5R for the price of a cheap walmart android prepaid phone.

I would definitely return it and make sure you get the camera you paid for. The A5100 is the same as the A6000 internally - same sensor, same processor, same autofocus, etc. The A5100 is a much better camera than the old NEX cameras.
