I was definitely a lifetime Fuji fanboy. My first film camera was a Fujica STX-1n in the 80s. My first digital camera was the Fuji Finepix 4700 in the year 2000. I have used Fujifilm XT-1 since 2015, then XH-1, then XT-4. Since I took dog pictures more often, half of my pics missed focus even though I used the latest 18mm f1.4 LM...I wanted to switch to XH-2 or XH-2s for better focusing ability, but they were always out of stock. Long story short, I bought a Sony A6700 for a trial, and oh man, its AI focus locked on the doggies EVERY TIME. No matter how good the color was, it was always disappointing when you found your favorite pics were out of focus. While Fujifilm is great for landscapes and portraits, Sony is definitely the better choice for capturing fast-moving objects.

I shoot Fuji professionally and I'd choose a Fuji every day over a Sony, but, I'm not needing 30 FPS all in focus or more than 1. If I was a sports photographer or a wild life pro, I'd probably want a different system. Fuji Auto focus is absolutely fine in AF-S and in AF-C it is not brilliant but not horrible (way better than most cameras from a few years ago) and I'm sure it will be fixed soon. I think the choice comes down to the type of photographer you want to be. Artist/Creative - Fujifilm Clinical sharpness and sterile photos, documenting everything exactly warts and all choose Sony (trust me no one wants a sharp portrait, showing all the imperfections on their skin, they do want it in focus) Also if you invest in Sony APS-C with view to upgrading without changing systems, make sure you buy the Sony FE (full frame) lenses not the E (APS-C) lenses, as those APS-C Lenses wont cover the Full frame sensor (meaning you save nothing when you upgrade)

Sony lenses are typically much cheaper for "equivalent" lenses. For example: The Fuji Xf 33mm f1.4 is $800 new, and sony has a $200 50mm f1.8 (which admittedly sucks) and a supremely sharp 50mm f2.5 (not far from f1.4 on aps-c) for $550. Additionally, the Sony 85mm f1.8 is $550 new, whereas the fuji xf56mm f1.2 is $900-$1000. When you take that into account, and the fact that Sony's second-hand market is drastically cheaper, I would say Sony (full frame or not) is the more affordable system to get into. A used A7rii for $700 will basically outdo anything fuji (aps-c) has for photography and autofocus, if you can work with raw files. All that said, the photos just seem to look better from fuji, and thats why I sold all my sony gear and moved to Fuji.

Other than needing an ultra shallow depth of field, or making prints the size of a wall, Fuji’s latest APSC sensor is excellent. It’s the focus challenges at times (like remembering to turn the eye detect on of off deep in the AF system when not needed), and the over complex GUI that make Fuji a challenge. Photos are far more natural than Sony’s colours out of the box. Even an I Phone pro seems to give better colours than standard Sony output. I guess if you like post editing and all that faff then Sony is fine. However, my preference is to nail the image in situ as I did for decades with Fuji’s analogue film stock. In those days I may have used two SLR bodies a tripod, plus a medium format kit on bucket list trips. Now all I need is the X100VI and the wide angle converter. Weighs nothing and the combo of IBIS and ND gives me huge versatility.

Part of my reason for largely parting from Fuji over to another system - aside from the AF issues - is product availability. I think the lack of product is partially due to how Fuji is steering their business, trying to be a more upscale brand like Leica. That means if I need to buy a piece of gear, I might just be out of luck, which does not inspire confidence. For now I'm Fuji + Nikon, but I am working toward a full Nikon setup eventually because my X-S20 was purchased for video, and the AF issues have cost me some key shots.

I came to Fuji about 4 years ago after shooting Canon DSLR 30D and 7d for many years as a keen amateur but not skilled in photoshop and RAW processing although i always shot raw and one of the main drivers at the time was weight and form factor and cost plus also the great out of camera shots I could share easily whilst travelling without carrying a laptop with me . I looked at the APSC sony system seriously, but cost of lenses , range of APSC lenses available and ergonomics on the 7c put me off so I bought the XT4 . I knew at the time that I was trading off ultimate picture quality and Auto Focus performance particularly compared to full frame but the results I have got suit my use case and I feel that the dial layout combined with the advantages of a mirrorless camera have greatly improved my understanding of the camera fundamentals. I now have the XT5 and yes the Autofocus still lags the current state of the art. I feel that the hardware is there in the XT5 to get to a decent modern autofocus they just need to sort out the firmware.... it certainly smacks of a product released half done. I agree that there is something in the XT series handling form factor that makes you want shoot it more and take it with you where ever you go. I think in the last few months the 3rd party lense situation has improved to the point where the vast majority lens options are covered particularly for prime lenses and at affordable costs.

Fuji for fun and travel (X100VI has been on all my recent trips), Sony for vid heads, Canon for the majority of pros - superb pro lenses, legacy connectors, superior build quality, durability and the best User Interface by far. I looked long and hard at Sony before buying the X, but I guess having a dozen Canon lenses collected over decades, all of which still work really well, was the deciding factor. Of course a new R5 mk2 and say the 50mm F1.2 costs a fortune but if it’s a work tool, you get what you pay for. I do love my X100 VI - got it on the launch day. Skin tones and film sims are excellent. Same for architecture with the compact wide angle convertor. I got back yesterday from a trip to Salamanca, Segovia, Madrid and Toledo - classic mid Spain. IS worked superbly. 1% of images had exposure challenges when shooting towards the sun, even with a lens hood. No problem for my iPhone 15 pro max though😂

I'm due to upgrade my xt3 and I think I'm going with an A7IV. Looking at the firmware/autofocus issues with the xh2 and xh2s it just doesn't make sense for what you pay to stick with fuji. I do a lot of wildlife, lowlight, macro, and product photography so clean, detailed files in focus are what I need. The "personality" and quirks that come with fuji aren't worth the headaches and shortcomings of the system when compared to Sony. Especially when it comes to pro level work. I don't really understand the "inspiration" sentiments that claim fuji cameras have a magic that stimulates creativity and the desire to take photos. Instead I get more of a lack of confidence in my equipment when I can't depend on the battery life or autofocus when Im out shooting. So having to worry about the "quirks" of the system is more of a distraction to me and takes away from my creativity and ability to enter a flow state because part of my focus is on overcoming the shortcomings of the camera itself Instead of the shots I'm trying to create with it.

I shoot with both systems, well I did in the past. Sold all my Sony gear and in the midst of selling all but one fuji cameras (six in total). Sony's are HUGELY uninspiring and I got bored with the clinically sharp [and over sharpen] images. It felt like shooting an iPhone but with larger files and a better grip, nothing about the images were unique. Fuji on the other hand had character as long as you use the classic XF lenses of a decade ago but their issues with AF and how they always fall behind the competition in camera performance and build quality, especially since the X-E4 days when they thought ultra minimalism of a supposed Retro designed camera gave way to smartphone inspired touch screen tech for controls and how plastic-y they started to feel. I am keeping my X-Pro2 and a couple classic primes because THAT is the pinnacle of what fuji was about and got it right. Since then you can slowly see the decline. I went back to Nikon and Canon DSLRs, Those NEVER disappoint me and they are real work horses that will live longer than me. My X-Pro2 will be my EDC and my DSLRs are for the important work.

If you want to invest in APS-C and don't mind lousy autofocus, Fuji is your camera. I'm not a fan of Sony APS-C, sure the autofocus is better, but APS-C doesn't seem to be a focus of Sony, as in they don't put their best tech, or effort into those cameras. For full frame it's hard to beat Sony, and I'm digging the Nikon ZF. Per your video, Sony does offer the most compact full frame cameras, and there's something to be said for compactness and decent autofocus!

I shoot Sony in my professional side of things and shoot Fuji (just downsized to only two Fuji bodies last week, actually) for everyday fun stuff. At the end of the day, my Sony gear is in another league when compared to my Fuji stuff when it comes to things like quality, AF (yes, big deal) and over functionality. But, it's also almost TOO good at times in that it just feels clinical and sterile at times, or maybe it's just because I associate Sony with work...who knows. But, Fuji is just fun to take out and shoot for some reason. It reminds me of when I first picked up a camera decades ago. But, I won't use my Fuji stuff for money making endeavors where I need to be able to fully trust my camera and equipment, especially until Fuji actually fixes the issues with their cameras. I think that's what it will come down to with a lot of people. One is better for professional work and one is more fun to shoot with or more engaging. I intend to do events and with the recent AF from Fuji I need a more reliable tool. The good thing is you can get an A7 III on sale for around $1200-1300 sometimes from major stores.

Bro, I’m gonna make a video this weekend showing my Fuji files that I swear it look better since the 7.0 firmware upgrade. I shoot with the XH2S and the XT4. The XT four is definitely slower on focus but both of the files look great. Capture one has some voodoo magic with these Fuji raw files. I agree with you, I barely have to do anything to them. They look great out of the camera. ❤

For hobby Fuji, for pro work Sony. I love Fuji to death but Sony is just leauges better in terms of autofocus and much more consistent in professional enviroment. Regardless of that on the other hand il never grab Sony to go shoot my personal stuff because I just love how Fuji feels and behaves.

@alexeipgАй бұрын
Quick note that comparing cost of aps-c camera + f/1.4 lens and ff camera + f/1.4 lens is a little misleading. The Fujifilm 33mm f/1.4 is equivalent to a 50mm f/2.1 on full-frame. if you make that comparison, the full-frame combo is often times the same price or cheaper than aps-c. A full-frame with a first-party 50mm f/1.4 lens is actually drastically better than an aps-c with a first-party 33mm f/1.4 lens and, not surprisingly, it costs a good deal more. It's also not true that the lenses on sony full-frame are huge compared to fujifilm aps-c. Compare the fuji 35mm f/2 with the sony 50mm f/2.5. The Sony lens will give better low-light and shallower depth of field, and it's the same size and weight as the fuji alternative.
@IamtongueАй бұрын
Yes I’m dumbing it down for people. But you are correct
@bernios3446Ай бұрын
Shallower depth of field becomes a problem once you try to get more than one person in the frame that are not in the same focus zone. In FF you will have to stop down + 1,3 stops to get the same DOF, and consequently you'll have to push up the ISO setting by the same amount. Noise performance will subseauently be the same. Shallow DOF is not desirable in a lot of situations. It's basically an amateur hobby. Accomplished portrait photographers often want to include the natural environment of a person. And even in fashion, stopping down to F8 is more standard than the exception.
@alexeipgАй бұрын
@@bernios3446The point is that larger sensors have greater dof flexibility, so it is still an advantage overall. If you personally never need/want shallow dof, then by all means shoot m43 or smaller sensor cameras (even phone cameras will work in good light).

@lensofthenorth42Ай бұрын
Sony is just a much better system to invest into, and it's not even close. 3rd party lenses are getting crazy good in terms of value for the money and they always release for E mount first (and sometimes only). Add to that a far better AF system, more effective IBIS (seriously a Sony A6700 rated for 5.5 stops of IBIS is far more stable than a XS20 rated for 7 stops allegedly), the possibility of swapping lenses between APSC and FF, the availability of a far wider selection of camera bodies to fit every use case better, and it's just a no-brainer.

Look at the sales figures. Fuji is not “really popular”. Any camera body with controls on the left side is made for people who don’t know how to hold a camera. I like how they look. But not the ergonomics. What does film experience have to do with the high tech demands on producing a digital product with complex software? Processing a raw digital image to your desired final image is exactly what you used to do in the film days in the dark room. You just have more options. You can make any raw image look like film in processing. This argument about camera X has that colour is only valid for in-camera jpegs. I shoot Canon. I can understand why people go for Sony also, but I think Canon has better overall characteristics. Nikon is making a comeback but I fear it is too late. Canon sells more cameras than Sony and Nikon and Fuji combined at this point. I fear the demand on resources to develop a new camera is making it difficult for the smaller companies and that is bad for consumers. And it doesn’t take longer to process one camera’s raw file vs another. It just means you have not set up your presets for the one camera to suit your taste the same way as for the other. Or more likely, the default settings are different and you have not adjusted them. I grew up shooting Nikon, and as a student I used Olympus for a while. But where I live, Canon all the way. I am a budget amateur shooter preferring bird and wildlife. I have an R7 with a 30 year old EF500 L is , a 100-400 L is ii, and an assortment of primes and shorter zooms . Everything works as it should. My entire kit cost me less than $5000 because I buy second hand except for the camera bodies. I have an old 1D3 as a second body. And I don’t need anything more, but it is always nice to get something new isn’t it. The AF is so good, I don’t even shoot in the same way I used to. I just concentrate on composition most of the time. I am no artist! But I enjoy my hobby.

The bottom line is that Fujifilm cameras are made for fun, whereas Sony makes more serious cameras. Fujifilm has nailed their color science and film simulation game, but the smaller cropped sensor and autofocus issues keeps them from being taken seriously from a professional perspective -- nobody wants to roll up to a paid gig with a dad camera.

Sony all day long. best of all worlds = FF, Great AF, Sharp images, Hybrid Video, Awesome lens selection. Yeah, It's more expensive, but it's an investment. Oh, BTW, your FF lens will also work on their APSC cameras too! Fuji is FUN, but it's Crop (not a big deal, but why do I always hear about Fuji-fanbois wanting FF?), the Colors are great (but that's subjective), Many missed shots because the AF is poor (I thought I bought a camera to capture the moments, not waste my time with disposable images). You make the choice? That's why so many cameras exist today.

Fuji said they will release a new update soon to fix the tracking issues. I’m skeptical they will make a huge improvement but I’m also not asking for perfection. All I ask for from the “AI” subject recognition is to not hunt if it finds the subject. If the ssubject is stationary, why does my lens keep shifting focus???? I’ve resorted to turning off all subject detection and using area single focus and sometimes continuous AF but in area. Can’t trust my camera at all. While I’m at it. Fuji, please go back and fix AF for all 4th gen cameras. You promised you would improve AF performance and never delivered.

Fuji people say they "prefer the process of photography" over "Sony's automated AF and great image quality" but they forget that a Fuji APS-C costs as much as an A7IV with kit, and that Sony Alpha cameras aren't actually drastically better.
