After a year I ended up switching to the Fuji xh2s for work, and the xe4 for my family camera. Love Fuji, and 26mpx seems to be my sweet spot at the moment. If at some point I feel like I need more, I may explore the GFX line.

How fun! I switched to Fuji a couple of years ago (from Canon) because I wanted something more lightweight but super high quality, something affordable and fun. I do a lot of video, so it had to be 4k. I got the Fuji XT4, and have been incredibly happy. I LOVE the external buttons/dials - I almost never have to open my menu in the camera. It's been a game changer for me. My everyday lens is the XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM "kit" lens, it's tiny and amazing quality. It almost never comes off the camera. It's definitely my favorite travel lens. For longer lens I love the 50-140mm f/2.8 WR (even though it's annoyingly heavy.) The quality is just incredible and it's stabilised. I buy most of my lenses used on MPB here so I've been able to try a bunch. I'm not a pro, so my choice to switch to Fuji was made for lifestyle/price of the whole system/convenience/quality. (I know you didn't ask, but I got excited to geek out about Fuji for a min)

What sold me on adding Fuji to my “rig” was the ability to play with the recipes on Fuji X Weekly that I can see the end result on the back of the camera in the moment. For my personal project/fun work I want to edit as little as possible. I have a portrait/headshot business, I save my editing time for when I am being paid for it. I have the X-H2 and a R6, I know what I am getting with each camera for the specific job. I got the fringer adapter and been having fun using the EF glass on the Fuji. My Sigma 105 1.4 and XH2, awesome headshot rig if you have the room. At the end of the day, I am very happy with the Fuji system, if I didn’t have a kid going off to college, I would have gotten into the GFX system.

As you are new to Fujifilm, I will spare you some headaches. When shooting with closed down aperture on wide angle lenses with AF-S, the camera might sometimes struggle to get the perfect focus, especially in the distance. It will go as far as trying to focus on the same object multiple times will vary in focus distance, with some shots noticeably missing the correct focus. If you have the distance scale displayed in the ui, you can see it varying from 3-5m, 10m and infinity. This is with AF-S! The workaround is to set the camera to manual focus mode and use Backbutton focusing. This way the camera will aquire focus with the lens wide open, regardless of the set aperture. This issus has been reported since multiple generations and I had it occur many times on my X-T2, 3 and 5. There are already 4 treads regarding this on Dpreview and you can find some KZbin videos.

There are many spec-savant reviewers who don’t take into account nuance, ergos, and experiential aspects of photography craft - but you’ve been able to capture such perspectives! I’ve gone through the same analysis, kept my XT-5, have outcompeted my son who solely shoots Sony FF but his pics look over-saturated and -processed all the while my pics look more natural and require much less editing (event and portraits). I’m a single-point shooter 98% of the time, so AF has not been an issue. Well done!

I am absolutely with you. I also have a Sony A7 IV and a Fuji X-T5. Most of the time for casual stuff I use the Fuji with some beautiful primes just because it’s fun to use. But if I do portraits I use the Sony with the Tamron 35-150 mm f2-2.8 because it’s more fun with the perfect autofocus and one lens solution. So I will keep both because each system has it’s strengths.

Couple thoughts since I just made a similar move (moved on from canon FF to a X-h2s). I’d recommend either a grip for the xt5 to help with comfort, or trying the xh models. The grip is much bigger and more comfortable but still overall a light camera. The weight isn’t huge when comparing the standard primes, but it is if you shoot long telephoto. Replacing the 100-400 full frame lens with the 70-300 was a huge weight savings (2lbs at least), and the image is about the same. With the 70-300, the xh2s is lighter than the Sony and 20-70 f/4 for example. That’s crazy weight reduction. Also - if you’re able to try the 18mm f/1.4, you’ll fully switch :). Enjoy the process!

Just a heads up that the Sony A7CR (and I would assume the A7CII) can shoot in various aspect ratios - 1:1, 5:4. 4:3, 16:9, 1.91.1 and 2.35.1. Paired with some of the smaller primes, it also has a higher "pick-up-a-bility" that the bigger A7s. Might be worth considering.

Great video. I can relate 100% to what you are talking about. I was Sony for years. Then I tried a Fuji on a whim and absolutely loved the colours. So I switched tonFuji. But I found the greens and browns, in long focal length landscape shots seemed a bit muddied. And I like to crop. So, back to Sony FE I went. But after a bit, I really, REALLY missed the overall Fuji experience. So, I now own both. I prefer the Sony for the epic style landscape photos and the Fuji for more walkabout and product/still life photos. I use zooms, so just a couple lenses for each camera cover my needs. I am very happy with this combination and I find it enhances my creativity and overall experience having what I consider to be the right tool for each situation rather than feeling I am compromising in either. It took me awhile to figure out how to set up custom film sims and save custom white balances and so on, but now that I have, I get it. It’s awesome to flip to one mode for for portraits, indoor/outdoor, wildlife, etc. With the profiles I selected for the photos linked to the raw, I can shoot RAW but also rip batches of JPEGS after a shoot in-camera with minimal further adjustments (basically hitting Q,Q twice and I’m done). The Fuji is a huge time saver with practice, and frankly if it wasn’t for the AI tools and additional features in LR or C1 (basics like straightening), I could seriously consider ending my subscription. As it is, the extra control and manipulation is an aid and does help me turn very good photos into great ones. Ya, I’d like a higher performance sensor at times, or better AF. But Fuji offers a ton of value that is hard to appreciate until you live with it for awhile and more importantly with other systems that may perform, but which clearly also chain you to RAW editors.

I really enjoyed your first take on the Fuji system. And, btw, I love your photography. I've been shooting with Fuji since 2018 and I'm really enjoying the experience. I got it because it's smaller and lighter and that suits my needs best. I don't need the latest/greatest in auto focus, but I do want nice looking files, that don't need much tweaking in post. I can tell you that my XT5 works fantastically well for landscape and wildlife, as well as street and travel. I've had no issues with the camera body out in rain, snow, dust, sea water spray, etc. It's built very well and I don't baby it. I just got back from a trip devoted to wildlife photography and my "hit" rate was as good as (or very near) my companions who were shooting with the Nikon Z8, Z6II and the Canon R5. We all came home with wonderful shots and I was never cursing the autofocus. But everyone's needs are individual and I think you're right to try it out for an extended period of time, before going all in. I did that when I switched from Canon to Fuji and used both systems for several months before I decided to sell off the Canon gear. Good luck, and have fun with your photography while you decide.

The below unfortunately also goes for the X100VI. And please don't be mistaken, I love Fuji and have been shooting professionally with the system since the X-T1. But due to the problems mentioned below, which I indeed have experienced myself, I'm out of the system for now. Fujifilm recently acknowledged autofocus issues with their 40-megapixel sensor, particularly affecting models like the X-T5 and X-H2, following reports from users and photographers. Fujifilm’s R&D team in Japan confirmed that they’re actively investigating these problems and working on a potential firmware fix. The issues became more apparent after the latest firmware updates, with users noting difficulties in achieving reliable continuous AF, especially in fast-paced environments like sports and wildlife photography. Previous firmware versions reportedly offered better AF performance, and some users have expressed a preference for Fujifilm to revert to an older, more stable AF algorithm.

I got into Sony at the beginning, in 2013, but in the last year I've migrated to the Fuli X-T5 for every day use, mainly for the smaller lenses. But, I'll be keeping a lot of the Sony gear. For the Fuji, in addtion to the smaller lenses, I enjoy the tactile dials and aperture rings for "dialing in" a photo exposure and I like the Fuji colours. As a photo-only guy, I need the screen flip up behind the camera, so the flip-out to the side screen of the Sony a7CII didn't work for me, even though I appreciated Sony's effort at smaller lenses, like the 40mm f/2.5. I will be keeping my Sony a7Riii though, for "big lens" work, such as telephoto - love my Sony 100-400, Tamron 70-180 f/2.8 and Sigma 14-24 and a few others. Big lenses on a Fuji defeats its purpose for me. But, my Sony APS-C is gone. (I've had my Sony a6500 converted to an astro camera by replacing the sensor filter with an Ha friendly one.)

I’ve got both systems. The Sony FF system is better for everything except for the in camera jpeg colour engine, retro exposure controls and lower entry price. Sony gets close to Fuji control layout if you use something like a sigma i series lens. Raw colors are the same for me, but I’m using the latest Sony cameras. The biggest difference I’ve noticed where the Sony is noticeably different is more image detail, better high iso performance (the Fuji uses a different scale - shoot the same shot with both and you’ll see the Fuji will be one stop higher in iso for the same exposure), hardware reliability, AF performance, simplicity and reliability.

Your impressions seem sound and the example images are lovely. I have been shooting film for roughly 50 years, digital for more than a decade, and using Fuji as my main digital system for many years. Your lens selection of the f2 "Fujicrons" is the same I use currently on an x-pro 2. A couple of suggestions. Yes, the Fuji files are widely thought to be more "filmic" and their presets are often a great start. In my experience, you get an even stronger film look by using legacy lenses via inexpensive adapters. The manual focus-peaking requires more deliberation, but works fine. Also, as someone with big hands, I found the cameras felt much more secure when mounted with a dedicated L-bracket. I use one from RRS, a mount-and-head system I use standard on all my cameras for convenience, and I often shoot tripod mounted. But as a bonus, the bracket just makes it easier to manage the small camera more securely. Your milage may vary. Good luck with it.

I bought my first Fuji camera (X-T50) about two weeks ago. My initial impression was honestly dissapointment with the autofocus system coming from a Sony A7iii. I find that the Fuji really struggles to track subjects moving toward the camera and misses a lot of shots that would have been trivial with my Sony from 6 years ago. But after playing around with settings and autofocus modes, I find that I am able to work around the camera's limitiations, and at least I am able to get an acceptable hit rate for my (non-professional) needs. And as someone who also hates editing photos - I am really liking the way images look straight out of camera. I shoot JPEGs (actually HEIC) with the stock Fuji film simulations applied. I do a bit of cropping/straightening, and maybe a bit of exposure adjustment - and like you said I find that any further adjustments beyond that tend to detract from the photo rather than add to it. The camera has really grown on me in the two weeks that I've had it since that initial dissapointment.

@stevenqirkle4 ай бұрын
@@amateurphotographer1096 the point of the X-T50 vs. the X-T5 is the smaller size and weight. You get same sensor, autofocus, and IBIS as the X-T5 in a smaller, lighter package. If you care more about dual card slots, weather sealing, and a beefier grip - then X-T5 is definitely the better choice. For me, compactness is more important than those features so I went with the X-T50. It’s strange that the X-T50 costs more than the X-T5 there - but I assume that’s just because the X-T50 was recently released while the X-T5 has been out for almost two years. I would expect prices to normalize in the future, with the X-T50 coming in at a little under the X-T5.

@Mamo8784 ай бұрын
Fad? Sorry, but you don't really know that much about photography. It's about telling a story, not the 'sharpness' of the image. The vast majority of the greatest photos taken over the last 150 years were done with film - which has far worse 'sharpness' than even a smartphone or even a basic digital camera these days. And the Zf? It's more of a video camera. That's obvious since it has one of those flippy vlogging displays rather than a proper waist-level tilt screen that works much better for still photography. You want full frame Nikon with _great_ build quality? Get an F2!

Personally I have to say I’ve gone the other way, trading my X-H2S and 33mm 1.4 for an A7C with 35mm G Master, which was basically a straight swap in terms of money and weight. I was finding that a lot of the listed appeals of the Fuji system turned out to be not as clear cut in reality. For instance the H2S was quite hefty and their better, newer lenses were far from cheap - often £600-£1000, firmly in mid to high end FE range, depending on whether new or used.

Correct. Sort of the _entire_ point of the Fujifilm system is SOOC using JPEG. Get everything set-up ahead of time and save to the presets using film recipes. Then go out and just have fun taking pictures, especially pics that look like film. And then forget about spending hours editing RAW files later, because you don't have to. All that time spent editing basically the same generic RAW files in front of a computer with 'presets' is for the Canon, Nikon, Leica, etc crowd. Whatever. Fuji shooters, for the most part, would rather be taking pics instead of editing pics.

I own an XT4 and I want to get a Sony camera because of its more precise autofocus system. Not sure if the XT5 has made improvements. I’m a hobbyist photographer and been shooting some family parties lately, where people are moving and dancing. The autofocus on moving subjects is not very good
@andyphotoandfilm4 ай бұрын
If you're going to earn some good money with these parties the AF is definetley an improvement BUT not on a sony or even panasonic level. I can highly recommend the S5IIX which comes with crazy deals and kit for the same price as a single sony body. I have the X-T5 and did many weddings with it, it was absolutely okay but my former sony and new panasonic cameras outperform the xt-5. Even for personal stuff like photographing my kid the XT5 misses quite often when he runs towards me, there are defintely enough keepers but iam always a bit disappointed when some of the best shots are out of focus.

I've been trying to switch to Sony for the past 6 years. It never sticks. Image quality, price, size and weight keep me shooting Fuji. Sony has a slight edge in resolution, but everything else is not as good. (I don't use AF tracking at all, so that might be a factor.)

I'm just amateur but one thing I dislike about photography is editing. Most I'm willing to do is a bit of reframing, but colors I want to look great out of the camera without any post magic. Yes, I demand to be lazy :D Another thing I found out for my frequency of using cameras is that sticking to one vendor, one type, one menu system, whatever it is, works best. Have been on Lumix for some time and recently tried Olympus and it's different enough that when I pick it up, I need to invest some brain power just to adapt to the differences, starting with powering it up: Lumix clicks to the right, Olympus clicks to the left. And so it continues with many other details ... annoying but I hope I'll get used to it eventually.

While fuji certainly has a look to their files, there's nothing that makes them unique or be replicated in lightroom with other cameras. What drove me crazy the most about shooting fuji was the dreaded worms! Not to mention Fuji's poor quality control over the past few years just made me give up on them entirely. If I want to guarantee the shot is in focus I shoot my Sony. If I want to shoot for myself I shoot my Leica Q or my many film cameras. Maybe I'll go back if fuji releases a proper Xpro4....not holding my breath though!

Just don’t use clarity. No worms. Or use C1.

Its known issue with Lightroom, you will need to use Capture One or Fuji's own RAW converter.

@@KristiGay1973wtf are "worms"? I just ordered a XT5 to have fun with.. 😐
@bingbong484817 күн бұрын
@@dewalt5519apparently if you shoot raw, the background out of focus areas are not as smooth as files from other cameras and can look like piles of worms for certain pics, maybe mainly landscape. I believe it was a Lightroom issue and people suggest that you get a better result with Capture 1. I dunno... I edit Fuji raws in lightroom and I don't have that issue. Maybe it's fixed or I edit in a way that misses the issue. I'm sure you'll be fine 😊

I wish I could buy a body "on a whim" :) LOL I left canon 5 years ago and switched to fujifilm. I switched because I prefer the dials on the top vs having to go into menus and it was more light and compact. I think each brand is aimed at different styles and personal desires so before you change or buy for the first time definitely go to the store and hold it and better yet rent it! I rented a Fuji Xt3 at the time and that is when I fell in love with the brand
@BrianLackey3 ай бұрын
"On a whim" isn't really very accurate, I'd been thinking about it for a while. And I decided that I could buy a used one and if I didn't like it, sell it for not much less than I paid, the difference probably about the same as renting one for a couple days. But yeah, loving it so far and will be replacing all of my Sony gear with Fuji kit.

But have you don't be curious why FujiFilm doesn't have Full Frame ? Only APS-C and medium format ? (not do a commercial or marketing response, please...((EG...that Aps-c is fine for almost everyone is a 'comics' FujiFilm full marketing phrase))😅)
@BillFerris4 ай бұрын
Fujifilm tapped into a desire on the part of photographers to have a film camera shooting experience augmented by the advantages of digital when they released the X100 series a decade in the early 2010s. Adopting an APS-C mirrorless foundation allowed them to make the cameras smaller than the more popular Nikon and Canon full-frame systems. (Sony wasn't a major player, yet.) By limiting their products to APS-C, they also created separation between themselves, Canon and Nikon. They didn't want to compete with those companies. They wanted to carve out a niche with an audience that would find the photographic experience they were seeking with Fujifilm...and nowhere else. Expanding into medium format maintains that separation between themselves and the (now) Big 3 of Canon, Sony and Nikon. They're still serving a niche audience. Both formats have allowed Fujifilm's optical division to be quite profitable.
@CristoforoBonissone4 ай бұрын
@@BillFerris 🤬Cameras are all the same. If you want sharpness it's the lens to make this, the sensor doesn't do it. If you want less noise choose 24 MP sensors for FullFrame and 18 MP for APS-C sensor, the fine color treatment is for post production. Don't follow the marketing sirens' flow, they are here only for sell and make money...your money. 😬
@BillFerris4 ай бұрын
@@CristoforoBonissoneall cameras use lenses. They use f-stop and shutter speed to control exposure; ISO to manage image lightness. But they're not all the same. The user experiences are different and they're tuned differently when it comes to color rendition, tonality, and other qualities that contribute to image quality.
@CristoforoBonissone4 ай бұрын
@@BillFerris the quality at 100 iso and f 8.0, if you have a good lens is indisputable on almost all brands. The color science is debatable, but even in the same brand it is different, take for example the Canon R3 and the Canon R5, they have two completely different color sciences. There is no best brand, there is the different experience, but here we go on personal taste. everything else is marketing.
@BillFerris4 ай бұрын
@@CristoforoBonissone clearly, the user interface, controls, menus, size & weight, and in-camera processing aren't important to you. That's your choice and you're free to use whichever kit you choose. However, the notion that a person can't distinguish between photos of the same scene made by different brand cameras using the same settings, simply isn't supported by the facts. It's easy to distinguish between Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fujifilm. I know. I've shot with them all.
