Interesting that Sony is constantly referring to the movies when defining the Playstation strategy. The rise of Playstation ushers in a new videogame paradigm - the Cinematic Game. Games would be more and more like movies, and less like traditional arcade games. The battle between Saturn and PSX could be seen as a battle between Arcade and Cinematic, and it ends with PSX dominant. This is important to understand because we are now seeing the next paradigm shift, to Social Games. Know history

If only Sony knew back then that the PlayStation and SOE would be the main reason it's holding the company up and accounts for 80% of their over all sales and growth. I bet when they got into this, they didn't have the slightest idea what so ever. That and boy has E3 changed. It went from power point presentations in small rooms with press members to sold out arenas that housed 10s of thousands of people with elaborate display and sound as well as celebrity talent. The ad looked like it was made in Windows Movie Maker in a couple of hours. The fonts. Oh the fonts. The Sega adverts with a woman with a bald head and rings is actually way more compelling and it does show some games after. The slogans are also kind of meh but may well have lead to "I've conquered worlds" which is an iconic slogan for the PSX.

Haha, hearing Sony talk about being able to just insert a game and play it immediately. I think they have forgot that idea with the PlayStation 3. Insert a game, and considering you have up-to-date firmware, you can enter the game, where you have to download a few updates, if you haven't already. Then, in some cases, you must install the game. Oh well.

@ASSEMblerEX Sega's rushed launch of Saturn was a desperation move. But all the buzz and momentum was on Playstation's side, and Sega had seriously burned their reputation with all those crummy machines like 32X, CDX, Nomad, Pico, yadda yadda. They needed something exciting to stay in the game...and of course, only made things worse by burning developers and retailers alike. And when E3 arrived, Sony ran away with the show anyway.
