I am afraid people are missing the point of the Neo.. it is not intented for existing PS4 users to get rid of their current setup and just go for the Neo. Sure there will be a % that will do this as they just want the newest and "best". Its the same for the developpers of the regular games, they are simply not required to design with Neo as the main platform in mind, nor is it intended for that. What the Neo is for is to provide both users and developers a platform that is actually able to process VR :) (and for the future possibly 4k up res options) ..so if you are either a new PS4 customer / existing one that wants the best and latest, - into VR and/or 4k (hi frame rate), - or a developper for VR games for the PS4.. then this Neo is for you. And I have to say that these Neo's will sell like hot cakes! :) I really dont get why this is hard for people to grasp. I think a lot of people are just bitter that they did not get this nice shiny "better" ps4 when they bought their older ps4.. and that is immature to be honest, it would be the same for being annoyed that Ford came with a newer and better car 2 years after you bought yours ;) ..its just how things work.

***** Mike as far as I know the Morpheus requires an additional VR support box on top of the existing PS4's out there to be able to handle the VR requirements. Within those logics, existing ps4 users dont need to buy the full new PS4 Neo that is comming, but only the assistor box which will most likely be cheaper then the Neo Im sure there will be upgrade sets which will have the Morpheus and the upgrade box but they are 2 seperate things. Personally I would get rid of the old ps4 and go for the Neo :)

Boogie, your absolutely right, thats why Console Games are optimized so damn well, because game developers just need to develop the game for 1 hardware configuration, and focus 100% on that Hardware Config. You might buy the same game for PC, that you played on console, and find out that the PC Version has stuttering in the frame rate, or any kind of issues like that. Because the console version was developed using a single hardware configuration in mind. So if they test the game on the console, and it runs well without any issues, the game will run exactly the same way for everyone with that console. Computer systems have almost infinite of hardware configurations, and its not just the hardware, its also about the PC Software Configuration too, like different Windows Operating Systems and Drivers. That is why Its next to impossible to develop a "Perfect" PC Game in terms of Performance.

But a developer coming public with a remark like that "utter lunacy" remark, simply didnt get the concept of it all and within his own confusion kinda made a fool of himself publicly. Especially a developer should know and understand the implications of the Neo concept and what he was blabling about was not part of it. The development standard for games remain the same in the case you do not want to do a VR or 4k edition... To me personally his remark kinda showed how inflexible he was towards the concept of a flexible platform. No selfrespecting and solid developer should show focus on a fixed platform and shy away from the flexible one (such as pc). You as a pc player should apreciate that notion as all to often (we!) pc players get horrid HORRID pc ports of fixed platform developed games. Anyhow, this was my 2 cents on the matter.

I think some of the PC comparisons are a little extreme when referring to the almost limitless amount of hardware configurations, we are talking about two variants of the PS4 so at best there will be 2 different resolutions, 2 different lots of textures etc.

One thing people should worry about is the system parity, I believe there was an article that mentioned that Sony will make sure that all games will come out on both systems and that the new version will not have anything exclusive over the base model outside of visuals. The big questions is that if they plan to allow base PS4 players to play with "Neo" players in an online environment, there will be a huge parity issue. People on the neo could be running a game at 60fps while the base model will be down to 30fps. They will have to lock the online separate from the other users, no?

Not only that but I'm not going to re purchase a ps4 just to get better graphics when I'm skeptical that the thing will even be able to pump out 4K when a lot of beast pcs have trouble hitting a decent frame rate at 4K. Not only that but Sony has been failing at backwards compatibility, psn network name changing isn't happening anytime soon, and the exclusives are good but not anything id die to lose. I love consoles too man I really do I grew up with them, but at this point they are too much like pcs to justify not getting a PC that will last longer, is upgradeable, and is constantly ahead of consoles anyway. Not to mention way better game sales through digital distribution which lets face it, is going to be the future anyways.

Even with the Neo's upgrades, it's still not going to play current full AAA games at 4k. Maybe there will be a few (less demanding) games that run at native 4k, like the PS3 had a few native 1080p games, but there's no way it's going to be the standard. I see both sides of the argument here for sure. But what tips the balance for me is that consoles have been pissing me off for years, because they force you to re-buy you old games if you want to play them on a new console. To me that feels so ridiculous and old fashioned, because PC has been infinitely backwards compatible since the start. So for the single reason that all future Playstations will be PS4s, and will thus be able to play games made from the years 2015 to 2099+, I think it's a good move.

If they have a trade in program for your current ps4 then maybe I will get one if I don't have to pay more than $100. Anything more than that after selling my ps4 is way too much. People think this will run 4k, its specs are slightly better than the PS3's, like 10% better... To run a moderately demanding game at 60 fps at 4k you need a 980ti AT LEAST, with most games being maxed requiring 2x 980tis. Even 4k 30 fps requires very similar hardware. Thats 1400 dollars in GPU power ALONE. 4k is essentially 4 times 1080's pixel density. When the PS3 can barely do 1080p 60 now (not true 1080p its doing 1600x1080 in most cases), a simple 10% boost in power will not quadruple its rendering power. We might see some simple looking games running in 4k, but its primarily going to be to give 1080P games better fps, and 4k movies.

Considering how deceptive the 4k TV market is right now, even if by some absolute miracle if the PS4 can do 4k at all, I think less than 10% of "4k TV" owners could utilize it. On top of that your asking tons of people to wait for a new HDMI format, that's not even out yet IIRC, or buy a new TV that has a display port connection. +Shipwrecksos I am afraid you are missing the point of the Neo.. it is not intented for existing PS4 users to get rid of their current setup and just go for the Neo. Sure there will be a % that will do this as they just want to newest and "best". Its the same for the developpers of the regular games, they are simply not required to design with Neo as the main platform in mind. What the Neo is for is to provide both users and developers a platform that is actually able to process VR :) ..so if you are either a new PS4 customer / existing one that wants the best and latest, - into VR and/or 4k (hi frame rate), - or a developper for VR games for the PS4 then this Neo is for you. I really dont get why this is hard for people to grasp. I think a lot of people are just bitter that they did not get this nice shiny "better" ps4 when they bought their older ps4.. and that is immature to be honest, it would be the same for being annoyed that Ford came with a newer and better car 2 years after you bought yours ;) ..its just how things work.

Here's the issue with upgrading the hardware of a gaming console. If the games were developed to the strict hardware specs of the first PS4, your current collection won't understand the upgraded specs, which means developers will have to patch all their post released games to accept the new hardware or only the games that started development after the NEO releases will be optimized for the new specs. So my advice is, if VR is your thing, get the NEO. But its pretty clear that if games will run on both systems, just stick with your current PS4. At least until some KZbinr does a hardware comparison video involving frame rates.

Now i am not really sure what it takes to get those options but I have read that it is easier to make them look better and downscale later. So i imagine they would Aim higher to like the spec of pc and then you just have the system auto check what type they have and set the items appropriately

That defeats the idea of what makes developing for a console so straight forward. Developers are pissed about this new upgraded PS4 coming out. Thats why I dont believe a console has a "auto check" feature as you described. If they develop games for the higher spec system, the easy conclusion is that first gen ps4 owners will suffer the frame rate dips. Or just not display in 1080p. Which by ps4/xbox one era of console gaming we shouldnt be having a scaling issue with games at all! Hence why I skipped out buying a PS4 or xbox one and played most 3rd party games on steam.

Games that are not rasterized (games that use *bitmaps* to define the playfield(s)), like pretty much all FPSes, should _already_ be scalable to virtually any resolution and/or frame rate. They are rendered on the fly from polygonal (or, more rarely, spline) data and there is no required resolution as far as I know. Except for textures applied to objects - which may or may not be rasterized - they could be procedural) - upscaling should not be a problem. In fact, most games already do this when you select detail level, etc, the defining factor is the capabilities of your hardware. Now, that being said, game developers who want to take _advantage_ of the new capabilities of the hardware - by adding even more polygonal detail and/or texture resolution - will have to build this into their games. There definitely is a way for developers to write their games - relatively painlessly - so that, depending on your hardware capabilities, more or less detail will be used in the game. I've had a change in opinion. At first thought, 4k consoles don't make alot of sense at this moment. Because, you need a 4k tv, and the games need to be natively developed in 4k for you to actually be watching 4k resolution. And, at this moment, there are no console games that are developed in 4k. But after some thought, this makes alot of sense. Because, you have to expect that the next generation of consoles will be 4k resolution. But if they are the 1st 4k consoles, their probably still won't be any 4k resolution games for some time after the console release. If they release the neo now, it sparks developers to start developing their games in 4k so when ps5 comes out, there will already be 4k games and that trend would have already started.

Most probably didn't understand what frame rates were. Many probably still don't. RESOLUTION though is a selling tool and is in line with the bigger is better marketing ploy. That being said, if you can get it to run well (highish frame rates) and you do it the correct way (4k tv + 4k console + native 4k developed games = actual 4k resolution) than there are benefits. And as a consumer, I'll be interested in making the switch to 4k when everything is developed in 4k, not before.

Another reason for this upgrade, may be to enable streaming 4k film content from playstation store / netflix. If it can output movies in 4k and with atmos soundtracks, it could be a simple alternative to a home theatre pc. Remember that some people bought ps3 at launch simply to watch blu-rays, and got a free games console. The current PS4 doesn't seem much of an upgrade from ps3 for those people. Because "PS4old" doesn't support 4K playback and doesn't offer much to encourage people to upgrade from their ps3 if they are into films. Even just calling it "4K" compatible, even if there are no 4k games, will help them shift some 4k tvs, that currently have very little available content. If it can give me StarWars the force awakens in 4K. I'd probably buy it.

I imagine at it's base the NEO will provide better performance in certain parts of the game(s) played on it where there previously might have been a bit of slow down. In the case of visual improvements It would not be surprising to see it done how it is often done on PC, with optional HDR texture packs as free DLC. So while the players are technically buying the same games, NEO users have a partial 'upgrade' path.

Developers have already been juggling with consoles, considering so many games have been coming out for last AND current gen systems. How is this so different? I get what the concern is, and I share a concern that we'll end up with games that suffer at the base PS4 level because not enough attention was given to them in favor of the upscaled 'neo' version. I like this direction. It makes sense from a business perspective and is personally attractive to me, considering I plan on replacing my current PS4 sometime this year anyway.

I expected it to last at least 5 years before a better one would come out. If they are just gonna start upgrading their systems like cell phones do, Ps4 is my last PS I buy. my i7 and gtx 980ti plays most.. . not all games on high at 4k so I can not see this play any 4k games other than indie titles and non recourse heavy titles

+Colin Parks absolutely right. What is more, triple A titles wont recieve an improvement in graphical settings, it will be the same settings as ps4, just higher res and fps. This is what you get for 400 bucks

Given how many of us likely bought a PS4 this past holiday season, hearing this is a kick in the teeth. It would have been nice to get SOME kind of heads up. Just feels like we spent $400 on an obsolete system. Of course the support will continue but it's going to be really hard thinking a game running at 30fps on the old hardware is the same as the 60fps version running on the Neo. This is likely the LAST console generation as we know it.

Ps fans need to step out of their fantasy world, there is no way you can play a triple a title at 4k with this price range hardware. No way whatsoever. 1080p-60fps... sure, but not in ultra, mid or mid to high just like the ps4 right now, just with higher res and fps. End of story, you want ultra 1080p, 2k or 4k? Either you buy an fx9000 or i7 rig with a gtx980 or higher and a minimum of 16 gb of ram or you just can't, I'm sorry. DEAL WITH IT

You either pay 700-800 bucks for your console and have 1080-60p, or about 1000 bucks and have 4k-30p - there's no way in heaven, that they will sell that "next gen console" from 2011 for 400 bucks and have 4k. Maybe running at 2 frames per second, but really, console developers, read up some current hardware - 4k is expensive for a fucking reason.

I'm mainly a PC player but I've owned most consoles. I don't rush into buying a new console on launch. I don't have a 4k TV but I am interested in Playstation VR and was looking to pick up a PS4 soon, though not for that reason, but with this announcement I will pick this one up when it launches. So I don't think it's only for people to replace their existing ones but for people who haven't yet picked one up.

Uncharted 4 can not do 60fps at 1080p on the current PS4, by word of naughtydog themselves, now they "double" the hardware capacity (according to sony) but expect the GPU to draw 4 times as many pixels, twice as fast, while expecting devs to increase features such as tesselation, shadoweffects, anti-sophic filtering and use higher textures? I'd sit on the fence until it's proven, because even with it being a 1080p upscaled to 2160p system (which is a huge difference from native 2160p.) it's asking for a system twice as strong to do 4-5 times the work. I'll be surprised if they can do 2160p upscale with 60fps at the same graphics as the 1080p-30fps titles of the PS4 "base".

Depending on how their build process works, it might not be that expensive for Sony to produce an upgraded version of the PS4 along side the original. It's entirely possible that all they have to do is load up chip Y instead of X at that stage of the assembly. If that's the case, then grabbing the currently niche markets of 4k and VR is a no brainer, and sets up for a time in the future where both are more common. You know the price of VR is going to drop dramatically in the next 5-10 years, and so will 4k. Getting a head start is probably worth it. The game devs position is reasonable as well, but if Sony is careful about how they do things it shouldn't be a major issue.

I think this is a great thing since they're already pushing the PS4 & XB1 beyond that they were designed for. They're making compromises already so early on that's just frankly embarrassing. Lowering FoV, 30FPS and upscaling only this many years in? At this point it's irritating, 99% of games should be running at 60FPS, it's important to keep reaction times easy, games more playable and people from getting motion sickness/headaches. All of the consoles in the past I was wowed by were the ones on display showing a game at 60FPS, Saturn, PS, GC, PS2 so many games just catching my eye for the lovely smoothness. Now it's as pretty as possible at the sacrifice of performance. They're GAMES, meant to be played not movies. The biggest concern is, Sony SUCKS at supporting their hardware. Gave up on PSVita, PSTV and just left devs to keep it afloat for a while. Great systems but Sony just gave up.

Unlike another KZbinr that is a gamer news channel you have nailed it right on the head as to why Devs don't like this system. The devs are unhappy because Sony had said they "must ensure" that the games work on the normal box - read must ensure - and then if the users has the expanded box then they can use the extra features. I can't see any dev being happy with that - I can't imagine that this will be an easy task either. Then they will need extra testing to make sure that it works acceptably on the normal box and wow factors for the expanded. That is gonna be a pain in the backside when you consider how much code optimization and compromises will have to be done to get things working at an acceptable level on the lower box. As soon as you have the expanded box why wouldn't devs want to use those features and make the best game they can - ooops no you can't - you have to make sure the games work on the normal box too. The easiest solution for everyone is for Sony to implement a trade-in scheme where you take in your PS4 and for a nominal fee Sony gives you a brand spanking new Neo. That way everyone - except Sony - is happy. But that won't happen will it - nooooo! Sony has to go about upsetting everyone. Users who don't have extra cash laying about, developers who don't want to cater to normal box users, and those that have purchased a PS4 just recently and are slightly ticked off!!!
