Sony Blocks and Refunds Ghost of Tsushima PC in 180 Countries after Helldivers 2 Drama

After the Helldivers 2 situation, Sony now doubled down on their PSN account requirements and started pre-emptively blocking and refunding Ghost of Tsushima pre-orders in 180 countries where PSN isn't available.

My brother actually had his Ghost of Tsushima pre-order refunded. I was also going to buy the game, but was waiting until after release. We both live in a country that isn't legally allowed to sign up for PSN. However, we both have PSN accounts and also played and loved GoT on PS4 and were looking forward to playing it on PC. And because our Steam accounts are linked to our country, we're now SOL. It really pisses me off, it's an amazing game, and I want to buy it twice and play it twice, but clearly Sony doesn't want my money, so I guess Sucker Punch loses out. Just another game dev being shafted over corporate greed.

I just hate this. I play mostly on console. So obviously I have PSN which should not be mandatory as well even in PS5 if you are playing your physical games. But in some cases for example ubisoft is forcing me to open an account to play their single player game (Prince of Persia lost crown). EA is constantly harassing me in their games to open an account (Dragon age Inquisition). Seriously how many account do I need in order to play? I just want to continue my life with minimum amount of accounts. Sometimes I think Nintendo's cave man behaviour towards internet is blessing in disguise. You can play your physical games even without internet and Nintendo account.

And he's 100 % right - the CEOs and even more importantly the shareholders don't see anything but the quarterly numbers. Besides - if you dig a bit you'll see that the shareholders are the same anyway. Blackrock, Vanguard and a few other organisations own the majority of the shares of all the corpos. Blackrock for example owns 8.3 % of Sony shares and 7.9 % of Microsoft shares. They also own 6.7 % of the Apple shares, 6.04 % of Amazon, 7 % of Google....the list goes on and on.

I am coming from a country where PSN is not available. Yet Sony still sells their PlayStation products and games for us in shops. So we have to use workarounds to use PlayStation by making PSN for another country (which breaks Terms of Services). So, they still sell their stuff to us, but at the same time blocks us from using it?? That is a retailer selling you the console not SONY. Retailers just buy and resell if there is demand for a product and they can legally SELL it. Retailers usually don't care if you can legally USE use and item to its full extent, that is your problem, not theirs. In short it up to you to know what you can (legally) do with a product you buy.

I had no clue 177 countries had no psn, wtf. Thats so weird and sux. When ive read u can link ur psn on ghost on pc i was actually rly excited.. finally crossplay may get way more common now! Quite a few games i could never play with my brother or friends coz i play pc and they only ps4/5..And trophies for some games i did enjoy, small bonus for me. So actually, if this is the way to get crossplay i am selfishly all for it. Hopefully they just make it an option instead of mandatory i guess.

It's even worse than that. In about half of the 69 countries with PSN access PC gamers still cannot create PSN accounts because for whatever reasons Sony decided that the account can only be created using a PS, but not via PC. Which makes no f.. .ing sense but hey. Ukraine is an example here. In these countries the situation is that people would have to buy a PS to create a PSN account that would allow them to play on PC. It's absolutely ludicrous.

I just want to point out that PS, Xbox Live, and Nintendo don't support those countries. And Steam don't show some games for purchase in many of those countries. This is not a Sony issue. All these countries have always had access to PSN, XBLive and Nintendo, and being able to purchase games ( just not directly with a credit card, but with funds and/or paypal) by choosing a different region. Sony just blocked this games now because it was brought to their attention in an aggressive way (an excuse to help against account linking). This was never an issue before.

First of all, I never pe-rorder games because why? why would I purchase a game that I can't play for 1/2 a year to 2 years? I just do it the day before IF there's some extra goodies for doing so. No point in pe-rodering since I have known about the complications that sometimes occur with it for years. I have seen the same charade over and over. Second, I had a PSN account for many years so this doesn't mean anything linking an account I already have. Lack of cross-play can affect due to having to purchase the game again. And yes region lock is a HUGE issue. Thanks for bringing that up, Ruri. Yes, I see a lot of pirating happening in the banned countries (180).

Apparently it's the stockholders/investors that need to be told PSN accounts aren't worth denying sales of a game to countries. Every potential game copy bought on Steam could lead to a PSN account. Regardless if it does that's still revenue the game could have made. Money is money. Sony is hurting already with less PS5 sales. They can make up for it with more game purchased revenue if they just think for a sec.

In my friend circle all of us are getting GOT pre-order refund. Imagine the number of players who pre-ordered the game in the whole country. I didn't buy the HD2 because I usually don't play and like MP games. I don't think I will ever buy any Sony games ever and recommend anyone to buy Sony games, because in the future even SP games may require a PSN account and they might do the same to already released games. And because shitty things like these keeps happening gamers in third world countries like ours are playing pirated games, because we don't really have any choice. In section 6.1. you'll find this nice little piece: "You hereby authorize us to use, distribute, copy, display, and publish your User Information, without payment to you." Distribute and publish.

the 177 number (it's actually 180 as of the last few days) does not refer to countries, but rather regions/territories. You can find the list and you'll see that not everything on there is a country, some are small islands (even some US territories), and the Pope would have to pirate the game because the Holy See is included lol

lol...lmao even. After the HD2 situation it isn't surprising Sony pulled back from the non-PSN countries. To be fair they probably dodged another huge bullet. Had the requirement enforcement stayed in HD2 and Sony looked away, it might have been grounds for some form of class action lawsuit. Imagine seeing an article about how Sony got hit by a major order from 180 countries 🤣.

I feel the need to buy the game JUST to refund it as a message to Playstation. I dont understand why delist it. Sure, require PSN for Legends, fine, whatever. But still, at least make it available to those other countries, makes some extra bit of money! It seems like a win win for everyone. Sony must have hired a perpetual intoxicant who is managing this fiasco. Ghost of Tsushima and Suckerpunch Games are incredible and deserve to be experienced throughout the world.

I think there's probably a bit more to this whole issue than just "Sony are being stupid". After HD2, there were probably legal issues flagged, hence the action they have taken. They might never sell the game in those countries, or they might remove the multiplayer part and sell the base game there instead. Any sales GoT gets is just extra for Sony. The game is already a success. If they want PSN accounts for online gaming, then this is a sacrifice they are clearly willing to take.

I'd glady pay for some games again just to play them on steam, heck I bought whole consoles just to play 1 game on. I may have only pirated games I bought previously but if they don't want to let me pay for them again so I can play them on a diffrent platform (wich they would sell me an emulated version anyway) I'm gonna take matters into my own hands. its like these companies are allergic to money by not selling on multiple platforms. but hey I'm just a dude on the internet
