I appreciate you consistently have the reasonable take. If everyone acted like you, the gaming community would be so much better. I wish everyone acted more like you when it comes to these games controversies whether its Stellar Blade or Assassin's Creed. The discourse should focus on the gameplay and the monetization. I wasn't interested in this until I saw you could play as Yasuke. I probably still won't buy this because Ubisoft has a long proven record of messing up Assassin's Creed gameplay-wise anyway. I personally recommend Ghost of Tsushima on PC which just came out yesterday. It's almost everything Assassin's Creed tries to be minus the ancient aliens conspiracy, social stealth, and most of the monetization bs. All the "discourse" going on motivated me to actually research things so I'll paste what I've written elsewhere from my findings: It's pretty obvious the complainers are just being racist when there's literally a playable Shinobi often depicted on the same promotional material next to Yasuke. While kunoichi are questionable, Wikipedia doesn't offer any explanation about the evidence presented in the bansenshūkai. In addition there's the main playable characters of Ghost of Tsushima, Rise of the Ronin, Like a Dragon Ishin!, and Sekiro all within the span of almost 5 years if you did want to play as a Japanese guy. Ghost of Tsushima is literally just Assassin's Creed gameplay but better minus the ancient aliens-esque conspiracy. Funny how the game published by "woke" Playstation that just released on PC yesterday is more accurate in that aspect. In several of the Assassin's Creed games, you're not playing as one of the locals such as in Revelations, Black Flag, and Valhalla. Ezio Auditore didn't exist at all. The Order of Assassins ceased to exist in the late 13th century and never used the iconic hidden blade. The blade itself is entirely an unpractical rule-of-cool fiction. Where were these people when Battlefield 1 had most people running around with submachine guns. As an actual Asian guy, where were these people when Scarlet Johansson was cast as a Japanese-speaking Japanese security agent with a Japanese name working for the Japanese government in Japan? I seem to recall them being on the other side telling me to shut up and that I didn't really care. Meanwhile there's literally evidence Yasuke both fought and received a samurai's stipend specifically. People need to think about the word retainer and what it means and why it's being used. A retainer is someone whose services would be retained after a conflict whereas a conscript would return to their life when their term is expired. Sure, at one point he carried Nobunaga's sword, a position of at least equivalent importance to Ranmaru and of much greater importance than the shoe-caretaker position Nobunaga's maybe more noteworthy follower, Hideyoshi once held. I don't know about you but I sure would have to trust someone a lot to let them carry my weapon. Would someone with as much martial success as Nobunaga really need to retain the services of somebody with the "strength of ten men" and who was significantly larger than the average Japanese person in order to simply carry his sword? Boy, I wonder how Nobunaga would have Yasuke prove his strength and what military purpose would Nobunaga have for a skill like that? Would the man who managed to unify Japan really think that carrying a sword was the best way to use someone like that. When samurai emerged, it wasn't a social class, it was a job someone did. It only became a social class later. It was only formalized in the mid-sixteenth century, decades after Yasuke's time. People need to stop thinking of samurai as just eastern knights that needed to be "knighted". There is already a lot more complexity and nuance that gets overlooked by popular media and general audiences. There is literally a thread of r/AskHistorians on this you can find and read. It's a tightly moderated subreddit that doesn't just let anybody comment unless they can properly source their claims. There is also literally an article with a photo of a retainer's armor by the Pitt Rivers Museum of Anthropology and World Archaeology which looks exactly like the stereotypical samurai armor including the iconic helmet. It also literally says a retainer was "usually a samurai providing military services." Sure, let's listen to people literally trying to rewrite history on Wikipedia. /s At best detractors can suggest there was a small chance that maybe he wasn't a samurai. The evidence and subject matter experts however generally agree that he probably was a samurai. There are literally descendents of samurai on twitter wondering what our deal is. This isn't even the first depiction of a black samurai. Yasuke is in Nioh! Afro Samurai as a piece of media exists. Nagoriyuki from Guilty Gear, the "noble vampire samurai", has the occupation of retainer.

So what we all know is that the female is actually apart of the order since she wears the hidden blade, Yasuke is not but my two curious things are what roll will Yasuke play and how well is the gameplay. I dont really care about the historical accuracy because if you look it up its foggy at best. People tend to forget that during that time that yasuke came to japan he would have not gotten the title of Samurai which is why it is never listed...he was not Japanese now what we do know is Nobunaga Oda did not care about breaking the code so he named Yasuke as his retainer which work closely by Nobunaga oda until Nobunaga died. Mitsuhide the man who attack Nobunaga during a certain battle manage to burn down the castle with Nobunaga in it and Yaskue was one of the last few left to defend the caslte but failed and was captured by Mitsuhide army in which Mitsuhide did not allow Yasuke to commit sepuko because he would never call Yasuke a Samurai. The after that note in history Yasuke just dissappeared.

Strictly speaking its unknown if Yasuke was ever granted the position of samurai, although the fact that he was allowed to live after Oda's death has implications he wasn't, it is worth mentioning some Japanese sources do state he was made a bushi but that isn't the same thing and we do know from Jesuit sources that he was trained in combat and suggest he doubled as a bodyguard but again nothing that states directly one way or the other, as for the shinobi women the only really stupid thing is the idea of fighting a soldier in full battle gear since Shobi was a fairly umbrella term for a whole group of jobs and its also reasonable to mention that Onna Bushi where actually a thing.....just not very common.

The problem is that in a game set in Japan, with Japanese culture, Ubisoft chose to make the MAIN CHARACTER an African man. This would've been less of a controversy if yasuke was there was an NPC samurai, the problem is that the protagonist of a Japanese assassin's creed game, isn't Japanese. there would've been similar backlash from the other side if the protagonist was white, especially when the documented proof of there being Caucasian/European samurai is SUBTANTIALLY higher. that would've still been a conspiracy. Only dfference would be that the people supporting yasuke, would've been against that and would've called cultural appropriation. But for some reason, its okay because its Yasuke. I'm a father of two daughters myself, and theoretically speaking, I wouldn't ever send my daughters to fight in the war. Over my dead body! And even then, I'd come back as a ghost just to protect them!

This isn't new though. Ubisoft has done this before going back to at least Origins (extra mission and 3 day early access) and so have other companies. There's always an "extra" mission, some exclusive skin and some weapon or skill. EA, Activision and Capcom did this back back in PS3 days, Ubisoft, Square and other companies started doing this in PS4 days. Now most companies are doing it and it's rare *NOT* to see it. Pre orders used to make sense in PS2 days when we only had physical releases and there were chances of actually not getting a game on the day of release (i remember people being salty that there weren't enough copies of GTA 3 and San Andreas). Now there's always enough copies and you can buy a digital version. Pre ordering doesn't make any sense for the consumer, its just helping the multi billion dollar company make more money.

There are a lot of reasons why I'm not interested in paying/playing AC Shadows but the biggest of those reasons and why, deep inside, I want this game to flop badly -- because it's Ubisoft. This isn't to say that the game will be bad; this is more of a protest with regards to the culture in the company and treatment of customers that I will not support the company in any way and I plan on sticking to my words.

I agree with most of what you said. I did pre-order the game though. Here is why: I played every single AC game and I enjoyed them all. I know Shadows will be at least similar enough to the previous games so I don't need to see gameplay. If Capcom would've opened up pre-orders for MH Wilds after the game awards I would've pre ordered as well, because I know I will like it. And since I'm pre-ordering physically I can cancel the pre-order anyways if the gameplay reveal does sour me on anything. I don't interact with Ubisoft's MTX really, I just buy the game (going for Collectors Editions if the physical extras are cool to me) and play through it. If the DLC later on looks interesting I'll buy that separately (unless I went for a CE like I did with Origins becaus it's included there anyways). Like I said, I agree with you and think it's important to speak your mind on that. But just like you said it with the whole Yasuke controversy, I personally don't care about the MTX myself because I never interacted with it and don't plan on changing that. I just want to play a franchise I'm invested in eversince the first game because I love the games despite the shady business behind it. If I wouldn't care about physical goodies like figurines and artbooks would never go further than buying a standard edition and what you showed in the video is definitely why. 40 bucks for a season pass we know nothing about plus an extra 20 bucks for cosmeticsy a photo mode filter and 5 skillpoints... it's disgusting.

For these sort of on release "bonuses" they should be required not to say extra in the higher tiers but in lower tiers to say X removed from game. If its already in the game its not a bonus, its the work that was already done. Personally i dont believe in buying these digital "editions" since they stopped being physical bonuses, things that were actually cool and had extra production/distribution costs to justify an increased edition price.

Tbh i think preorder and dlcs can cost more (not much more) but at the same time i feel like the base game should be EVERYTHING you create before release, if u feel like it raise the price a bit idc just dont do the thing where you split your content so some people can have more than others. everyone should be playing the same game for it to be fair.

I don't care for ultimate or more expensive versions of a game. I'll *much* rather they do that than microtransations. I don't like the early access though. That's BS. That should never be tolorated.

I can't really relate to you guys getting turned off because of these micro transaction. I've played Odyssey for like 120+ hrs and never have I felt that it was asking me to spend paid currency for weapons, armors and mounts. The game already had enough you can get in the game. Now if these weapons were so far beyond with dmg and effects, and gives needed advantage to clear the game then maybe I'd take it differently.

My main concern is with story implications. The waring period of Japanese history follows Lord Nobunaga’s rise and fall in power and I’m concerned how Ubisoft will effectively use Yasuke. Given that he is a samurai/retainer/servant to Nobunaga and the history states he was very close with his lord, the story premise seem flawed from the beginning with Yasuke assisting our female protagonist. I understand Ubisoft stretches history in making games but this seems to far a stretch where suspension of disbelief is overlooked. Personally I would have preferred if you choose one from the beginning and the story plays out from there, or if we have Yasuke play as the antagonist foil to the other protagonist. Possibly making story opportunities where you play one character to make a trap and prevent it as the other

Its like i told you on stream, i used to like Ubisoft back in the PS3/360 days with the Ezio AC, Far Cry 2 and 3. They made great games without any BS. Then they saw EA making billions from MTX and figured "we can do that too". I love ancient Greece and Egypt and was so excited about origins and Odyssey. Was a bit disappointed by origins and hoped they would change with Odyssey. They did, but unfortunately they changed for the worst. Most AC fans wanted one set in Japan around AC3-4 days a decade ago, when we didn't have a lot of open world samurai games. Now we have a lot and some are much better that what i expect Ubisoft will deliver to us going off what they delivered before.

I don't get the "sense of weight" complaint. Real swords are pretty light. Big, heavy swings are a video game convention but they're actually pretty unrealistic. His movements seem fine for a custscene.

Platinumed all of the previous titles (apart from the side scrolling one) and I'm officially out of the franchise. I have no issue with a non-white protagonist, and an outlier (as this character was) is not an issue for me (William in Nioh was an outlier, after all). But this pricing model is beyond bad. It's not that I can't afford it, I simply see no value in it, I don't feel like I'm getting a decent deal. So I'll bow out of the franchise and spend my money elsewhere
@Rheinau19888 ай бұрын

I think you're taking the CGI trailer presentation too seriously. Usually, CGI trailers are made by different teams or even outsourced to other studios. I believe the sequence in this trailer is mainly meant to convey the game's story atmosphere.

I've given up on ubisoft games quite awhile ago. I just can't condone their practices and over bloated games. Honestly.. if you want to play then. Fine.. but if you wait a month, they slash the price. Keep waiting and pick the game up for less than 20 bucks. Last game I grabbed( and it was actually my son that picked it up for me ) was the last far cry. I played it for about 2 hours and un-installed it). The game lacks the magic, and it feels so generic. I'll admit that at that time, I was also suffering from open world burnout.
@simondelavega19388 ай бұрын
Im gonna say this. The premiss of AC game have never bee realistic what so ever but they have revolved around historical events with some insparation from real figures. Ubisofts problem is that they started out with realism in the way gameplay mechanics work, i.e., character combat animation parkour to compliment the classic playstyle of being an assassin, however after origins which marked the first time they implimentsd RPG elements to a game they also diviated away from the classic playstyle of being am assassins which shows franchise inconsistency, but because the concept of being able to play as descendants from the past stems from everything in the game being a simulation, that also gave headroom to retcon having realistic aspect in the game not just combat but elemenets influencing plot a d now newer player who started with origins onwards have a set example of what assassins creed is but older fans also have examples of what an assassins creed game should be. And i also believe there are people who dont mind this shift in franchise but aside all that its the scummy buisness practices of ubisoft that turn people away because its not just about buying a game a single time anymore, but contents split and hidden behind season passess and paywalls.
@Primarch-h9t8 ай бұрын
Think we can all agree Ubisoft should just give AC to someone else who can make a pretty good game
