That doesn't make sense. Most games on the discs aren't the full game. You put the disc in your PS5 and it installs the old version and then upgrades it. The finished game is never on the disc. It doesn't matter which way the game comes, you have to download most of the game.

I goto to download code on my 2.5mbs internet to download a 2gb file.... days later it was done. Installed then needed to update.. I was pissed. So I bought physical ones.... no better still had to download huge files to play. I literally said to my child this morning when she tried to play 'the crew'. I said we are not allowed to play that. She asked why? I said well I paid for the console, I paid for the game but to play the game I have to pay more money to Sony to play online. I said to her that should be illegal. I said guess what, we can play any nintendo game you want for a fraction of the cost. I still have ps1,2,3 and 4, I've spent a fortune on this crap. Sony sucks, Xbox sucks, even Nintendo sucks now. I wish they would all concentrate on making these games playable from day 1 as a finished product. No extra bs to play. So ya I now just play nintendo switch, no good games for my age but my kids love it. Mario wonder and zelda botw, totk are good enough for me. Lol

@@tedjohnson7485the notion that most games arn’t full is false, there is certainly a lot of the games that arn’t complete on disc but there’s also just as many that are completely on the disc but an older build that does not include patches to certain glitches which may or may not be a good thing, 9 times out of 10 game breaking glitches don’t matter unless you go looking for them.

Indeed. My Blu-Rays need somewhere to be played. I had to buy the disc drive a month ago for my coming PS5-PRO cos they were starting to be sold out. I got the last one at my local electronics store. They are now sold out everywhere in the whole country of Sweden.

All of my games are physical discs. I think Sony is bloating the numbers of digital games to justify removing the disc drive. They're probably counting the free PS+ game downloads.

The PS5 pro DOES have a disc drive.... It just doesn't come with it. When I ordered my PS5 PRO, I accidentally ordered 2 of the disc drives from gamestop. I'll probably return 1 or sell it. Possibly hold on to it as a backup in case 1 goes bad.

There are lies, damned lies, and then their's statistics. I don't believe for one second that Sony trying to phase out disx drives is in response to market trends - they're trying to force those trends by convincing everyone that they're already true (that the majority of console gamers don't buy physical) to justify dropping physical completely. Well maybe that's just the way the industry is heading and that there's nothing any of us can do about it, but when that day comes I'll gladly drop console gaming without any regret. It's already an expensive enough hobby without Sony trying to pry my own games out of my hands.

I'm gonna be pissed off if they get rid of disc drives, I have around 100 PS4 discs and only about 4 or 5 digital games that I got for free. I have around 65 ps5 discs to, and only 1 or 2 digital games again I got free. If they go all digital I won't be going back to them again. I like to own the game for when the server disappears or game is discontinued in the digital store.

I think for me and other people the answer is really simple. If the PS5 Pro costs 700 dollars and it doesn't have a disc drive we won't buy it. As someone else said around here, the day physical games stop existing, we'll drop console gaming.

My question about the data related to physical game purchase numbers compared to digital purchases is whether or not they are excluding sales numbers for games that don’t get a physical release. Because the data would be skewed in favor of digital purchases by those sales numbers. A better comparison is the physical vs digital sales only for games that get both releases.

The reason I bought the PS5 Slim with the Blu-ray drive is to watch movies. I used my PS3 for that but the drive died. It's cheaper to use my PS5 for Blu-ray movies than to buy a Blu-ray player.

You think those people will magically start buying games full price? If anything I'd assume the company would lose money as they would ultimately have less game sales, and not just a small percentage that gets cancelled out by full price game sales.

The resume activity was quite useful, and I'm surprised they removed it. It's one of those features that show off how quickly SSDs can load. And I've noticed something since the update. I've been playing a game and it still says 'Resume Activity' after the update, but no button for it, rather just 'Play Game', with 'Hidden Activity' below 'Resume Activity. I looked into it as I was puzzled when I first noticed it, and apparently it's related to spoilered content being hidden.

So about the disc drive vs. digital games paradox, this is just my thoughts on it based on my own experience and understanding of human nature. I bought a disc enabled PS5 too and do the same thing. Basically, there are games I want on disc and others I don't. The convenience of switching between digital versions is alluring, so I often have one game in the drive until it's done while switching between several digital games. The digital games I have range from short games, which I'd never buy on disc because it doesn't seem value added, to lengthier ones like Spider Man 2018. Also, the PSN sales make buying older games much more appealing than looking for similar deals online. I'd also like to know if those reporting sites consider downloads or ps plus catalog games as purchases rather than rentals, for lack of a better term. When I look at my library, any games I got for "free" are considered purchased even though Sony does make the distinction on its PlayStation Stars program.

With the exception of Horizon Zero Dawn that I got on ebay a few weeks ago, the only physical games I have are the 7-8 I bought at the same time I bought the console. I’m a Switch user looking into getting a PS5 or Pro. I have more digital games, but that’s because a lot of them were bought on sale for like $20. If I actually care about a game, I buy physical for preservation. They need to keep the disk drive or they will be leaving money on the table from collectors. I believe the quick resume activity was the reason my games would get an error every 10 minutes. Every time I did it, my games closed. I would have to restart my ps5. After I stopped using it , it stopped happening.

its the availability, as well as the games that are releasing are mostly digital. The decease in physical games availability (lack of GameStops and Bestbuys), there hasn't really been any collectors edition games like there use to be. Then, there is that most of the games people are playing are either Always online or Always connected and constantly going through updates and patches.

I got a PS5 console from Amazon, but the product box was damaged and looked like it had been used. After just one day of playing, the console started heating up so badly, it felt like it might melt. I haven’t bought a disc for my Ps5 in over a year but that doesn’t mean I don’t want a disc drive…if the ps6 doesn’t come with one I wont buy it. Especially with the issues they have with the PlayStation network. I lost out on a timed campaign in one of my games last month when the network was down for essentially two days because I actually have a job. Did they give us any compensation for not providing a service I pay for…nope. They’re ripping us off more and more and I’m noticing. Game prices aren’t any cheaper on digital only..now why is that considering they save all that money on manufacturing?!

I think the reason people prefer Digital over Physhical due to Install while Console in sleep mode, not having to get up from the sofa to switch disc, disc nice and potentially digital deluxe/PS Store exclusive bonus. Shawn Layden said it before and I agree wholeheartedly: We need shorter games again. Don't get me wrong, I love my long story-driven games. I'm not done with Infinite Wealth, yet, and I already have 153+ hours into it. But I think back to the ps3 when I could pick up a game, play it for 9 hours and call it a day. I've been missing that feeling more and more. On that note, just because the game's shorter, doesn't mean it's bad. There's so many fun experiences I had back then with shorter games. On top of that, there's actually quite a few benefits to it for both players and devs. The feeling that we finished a game is great. It's even better if it felt worth our while. Easier and faster to platinum, usually, too. For those who collect trophies. But from a development standpoint, you can make those games using a much lower budget without sacrificing quality, and do it much faster. This eases up the pressure on devs, too, in a way. So even if you sale for a little cheaper, like say $40, you'll still be able to profit. Quick side note, I feel like the push for live service has had a huge effect on this, too. Because the market is oversaturated with live service games that want you to log in and play every day while also pumping out 100+ hour single-player games and nobody has enough time to play everything. Gamer fatigue is real and it's growing more and more every year. Those shorter, cheaper games could be a potential remedy. That's just my opinion, though. I'm curious if anyone else would agree. Quick edit to mention that I know indie devs have been carrying this torch. There's so many short-form games on the indie market that are really enjoyable.

All the people I've seen going over the news on KZbin seem puzzled people bought 80% of the PS5s with a disk drive when most games are sold digitally. No-one seems to reflect on the fact that a person needs to get only one physical game to need the disc drive. In my case, I bought about 100 games since PS5 came out but because I had purchased the collector's edition of AC Valhala I needed a disc drive. The rest of the games I have bought were digital.

I’m feel like getting digital is justified if it’s a really good discount or multiplayer only. Single player games should always be physical.

The feature being gone doesn't bother me. If you still want that feature the PS4 did this. You can just leave the game in pause and turn off your console. When you return to turn back on the console and start the game again you'll be right where you left off!!

I don't buy a lot of physical games but I always buy the disk drive. Because I watch movies and play music on my console. So to remove this would really suck. Was planning on buying the pro. No disk drive no purchase

I love my physical discs and like most, my Playstation doubles as my dvd/Blu-ray player. When my internet goes down or my cable is out. I pop in a movie. It's crazy that they want to charge me to play the physical games I have already purchased. At $700 and pro is in the name, give me all the features.

Yes it was really nice to quick resume a game it really sucks that feature is gone. And how about 80 bucks for a glitchy unfinished game. The doorways on Silent Hill 2 are horrible!!! I don't get it man.

I never use the resume functions on either Xbox or PlayStation to be honest. I prefer to fully close down a game when I’m done then when I go back to it boot up the game the old fashioned way. Not that I’d advocate for the removal of features just because I don’t use them myself.

And no I also don’t see any activity card they say game help they also took the feature away. I have used the game help feature for many games where I was stuck in and I was not bothered to go on my phone type in the level scroll down and hundred and try to find the best one, but sometimes, those studios also have spoilers that is why I prefer the game help feature

Hey Jimmy i have ps4/5 hardrives to save my games. Would you be able to tell me if i was to buy the ps5 pro etc. would my hardives work on the new ps5 pro or ps6. As i have 6 4tb hardrives. I dont want to lose all my games ive download onto them. Thanks if you have any advice on that subject. And i have the ps5 disc drive and ive never bought a game on a disc. My Bad

Yeah I have a discless ps5 but only because I got it 350$ when it was virtually impossible to get a ps5 in general. I still would prefer a disc version.

The original way they had is was great, but the devs outside of Sony weren't supporting it. People probably weren't even using it. Unless you are super tuned in you probably didn't even understand the activity cards.

Maybe I am alone with this but I really hated the Resume feature. I accidently used it couple of times and in so doing loaded into a wrong checkpoint and my autosave was busted. I am glad it's gone 😅

Those physical/digital statistics could be wrong, i've only bought 8 physical 70€ games on PS5 and every month i buy several 1-5€ digital games that i play one time only. 1 70€ physical or 70 1€ digital game could give the wrong idea 🤷‍♂️

I will always prefer physical. I'll admit that the PS store is very enticing with their discounts and they do suck me in that way and is most likely the reason why more people are playing digital. I mean, if they don't want to sell the console with a disc drive but still give the option to purchase and attach one, I'll take that over no disc drive at all.

PS5 Pro doesn't come with a disc drive because Sony probably realized that putting an $800 USD console on store shelves wouldn't be a good look as $700 is already outrageous

I wouldnt mind digital only if we actually legally owned the games vs just lending which we got rn. And there should be a way to preserve games if the developers decided to take down servers and games from all platforms it was being sold on. The only negative is prob that we might lose big discounts in the long run. I think people dont buy physical as much because it takes way longer to get the game and its not cheaper as far as I know and on top of that some games you still have to download them. Companies started doing bad things for customers but nobody stepped in and now its all a big pile of issues that pushes people to digital. The one and probably only benefit of physical is ownership and that is only a benefit because the government allowed the companies to remove that from digital products.

I would not say all game digital but majority I buy digital it just easier. However I do think it a risk as we don't know if they will continue to honor them on future consoles.

Im gonna be honest i haven't bought disc games since ps3, and literally all my friends buy digital too. One thing I hate about disc now is, you basically need to download the disc version of games nowadays too. Instead of just putting it in and playing. It sucks so i just buy digital. But the way ps+ set up i dont even play my game anymore honestly. Maybe um growing out of videogames idk but i do not have fun playing anymore. Everything needs an internet access, or you need ps+ just to play. Or else the games will be locked. These companies squeezing us to death and all we will do is deal with it and pay more while getting less

I always have 2 doubts about that "80% of the people buy digital over physical games" claim. 1-what games are the ones bought digital, and if PS+ are counted as bought ones. Because I have lots of digital games, but, or those are from PS+, or Free2play, or indies that haven't a physical release. 2-specifically, where are the people who buy digital games primarily. Here in Mexico, there are states were there's no games stores or, the ones that exist, have a bad catalog and bad pricing. You can go to Walmart and find fifa from 2 years back at 60dls! In Mexico is easy to buy physical games in the city, but is you are from another state, you hardly can find them, so you have no option but buy digital. But I have a repair shop in Mexico city, so I see lots of different consoles from different owners, and I cans told you this: from all my clients, 95/100 have physical games primarily installed on their consoles. Digital format has his advantages, I can't deny that, as I said before, makes games more accessible for lots of people, and also has permitted indi creators bring their stories to the marked (without digital, games like Minecraft, Undertale, and specially Cuphead would have never existed) but pushing the digital and online required games is only making developers abuse from us, and in the end, we will ending with a market full of Games as Service and "selling full price without selling"
