Best travel camera I have owned. 24-600mm is all I need. 4K 30FPS is also very sharp. I hope new model will have a video timelapse like you have in GOPRO since I dont have time to do photo timelapse.

Thanks. This camera is the king of Bridge Superzoom Cameras. I am sure Sony will update it. Hope a new RX10V will have the new A7SIII menu system and the screen will be full touched (Focusing, Menu). ....

Mr. White, I have just purchased your Sony RX10 IV book on Amazon. This newer publication was apparently released 11/27/17, just in time for an extended photo shoot in a few weeks! Your older RX10 III edition months ago was a great intro, but did not include the newer functions of the IV. Thrilled to have found the IV today on Amazon. Greatly appreciate these videos to supplement your book too.

I had this camera over a week, it’s great. But I have recorded movies but they are not on my memory card. Only images go over. Any ideas?

The images are stored in the DCIM folder on the card, but the videos are stored in a separate area. On the card, look in the Private folder, then in the M4ROOT folder or the AVCHD folder. In the M4ROOT folder, the video files will be in the CLIP subfolder. In the AVCHD folder, you have to dig down a few more levels, to BDMV, then others. Hi alex,,just bought your book and working my way through it. in the meantime meybe you an help me I want to use my RX10 MK4 to video some model airplanes in flight and in 1080p im struggling with understanding all the different focus modes / options available. What i want to achieve is to be able to manually turn the lens zoom ring while viewing my subject ( ie a model airplane in flight ) via the viewfinder and maintain focus as i zoom in and out to keep the model in shot. These models move at different speeds in flight so its important to keep them both in frame and in focus. i suppose its kinda similar to a bird in flight so im hoping you can help.

Hi, Gerry -- I have never tried to take videos of model planes in flight, but I will give you my thoughts for using the RX10 IV's controls. Once you have the File Format and Record Setting set, I would use Movie mode, probably with P for the Exposure Mode setting, unless you want to use M with definite aperture and shutter speed settings. Put the focus mode dial at the S or C position. You may want to turn on SteadyShot (Movies), but not to Intelligent Active -- only to Standard, or possibly Active. Then turn on Center Lock-on AF on screen 5 of the Camera Settings1 menu, and make sure that the Focus Standard option is assigned to the Center button through the Custom Key (Shooting) option on screen 9 of the Camera Settings2 menu. When you are ready to capture the video, press the Movie button, get the subject in the center of the frame and press the Center button to activate Center Lock-on AF, then move the Lock-on frame over the subject and press the Center button again to lock the frame on that subject. Turn the zoom ring as needed. These settings should be a decent starting point, and of course you may have to modify them as experience dictates. -- Alex

No, the RX10 IV has limited touch screen features. You can adjust focus and enlarge the screen display, but you cannot select menu options or adjust other settings using the touch screen.

Hello Alex! Thanks for your helpful video. I'm looking to shoot flying owls in slow motion with my rx10 IV. I tried doing this a month or so ago but it didn't work so well. I'm wondering what settings you would use to film the owls flying and in slow motion? When I tried before, I wasn't able to get the owls to remain in focus. Here's the rough draft of the video I'm making, you could perhaps scroll through it to see what I ended up with. I assume you are using the High Frame Rate (HFR) mode for your slow-motion shooting, which limits the focusing options. I don't have experience in shooting a subject like the owls, but here are my thoughts. You might try using Aperture Priority for the HFR exposure mode, and set the aperture to a value such as f/8, f/11, or possibly even f/16, if the lighting conditions permit, to maximize the depth of field. Set the focus mode dial to an autofocus mode, so the camera will use continuous autofocus. On screen 2 of the Camera Settings2 menu, set AF Drive Speed to Fast and AF Tracking Sensitivity to Responsive. Those settings may give you a starting point for getting sharper focus.

Well, I had tried using HFR, but I think the focusing wasn't able to keep up. A friend mentioned that I should just do regular 60 fps. I had tried 120 fps, and the focusing didn't work. And just today I was testing with a rolling ball (coming straight at the camera) and even at 60 fps, it didn't seem able to focus on the ball the whole time. I'm hoping that maybe since the owl is bigger than the ball, it might work.

If you're using a 60p setting, you might want to try Center Lock-on AF. I'm not sure if it will help, but I think it would be worth a try. Good luck!
