In this video I compare stabilization with Sony APSC cameras. This is the Sony A6600 vs the Sony ZVE-10 vs the Sony A6100 and a Gimbal. This should be an interesting video for those trying to decide which camera to get for stable handheld video.

I feel Sony still focusses its IBIS and OSS lens stabilization for shooting photos, and not so much for video. EIS is more important for video. I can see them still supporting all 3 in future cameras as they all play a part in different situations.

I think IBIS was intended for photo use in low light, as is OSS. I notice they don't put OSS on the more recent 'vlog' lenses as I think Sony are pushing for the EIS cameras for vloggers. IBIS and OSS are perfectly good for photography (If anyone remembers a time when photographers took photos!)

Active / catalyst stabilization on ZV-E10 works well only if you use shutter speeds faster than 1/100 so you can not follow 180degree shutter rule. Try active with sutter speed 1/60, you will get interesting result..

Yes, in my opinion, this active stabilization is not mature enough to be useful. Motion correction within each frame is needed in addition to inter-frame motion correction. Or if natural motion blur can be faked later in software to simulate a 180 degree shutter, this technology can then be somewhat useful.

Thank you for this information! Quick question, when do you think the new line of sony APS-C cameras may drop? 2023 or do you think they may be over a year away? Moving into this system and do not want to spend too much on a used starter body if the new cameras may have Internal gyro data like the ZVE-10.

I only recently switched from Canon APS-C (SL2/3 aka 200D/250D) to the ZV-E10. I have a Crane M3 as it can handle the Canon DSLR whereas the M2S has issues with the heavier and bulkier set up. that weight and form factor is why the new Sony APS-C lenses with their compact and lightweight size were a very pleasant surprise. Even the Sigma 16mm while brilliant for in-studio work, is just too bulky for my outdoor shooting. I pair the ZV-E10 with a ZV-1 compact which covers all my needs part from where I need a third angle (workbench for ex).

This is exactly the content I needed for my decision. Thank you so much! BTW I am using a ZV-1 for 2 years for family movies, and I am considering to replace it with an a6 series body for one single reason. I am longsighted and I cannot see clearly the small display of ZV-1. Also I used traditional SLRs and DSLRs for 30+ years and I cannot compose the picture properly without the viewfinder, I just simply can't.... Because I use gimbal anyways, this video showed me that there is no point in investing in IBIS. Actually from the footage it looks like IBIS is developed mainly to enable longer shutter speeds for photograhy, not for video stabilization. The two things are very different, many people don't realize it. Trying to keep something steady with your hands will result in very different shake than trying to walk. IMHO there is no way to avoid using gimbal in video.

Sony IBIS is good in picture taking similar to how it worked well during that steady handheld portrait shot. It lets you shoot at a lower shutter speed than you normally would for a given light level, and therefore have a lower ISO. I forget the details behind it, but picture taking IBIS is trying to filter out a different frequency of micro vibration than the frequency of handheld video shooting.

@kristiangurholt59
@kristiangurholt59 Жыл бұрын
IBIS is meant to stabilise the momentarily camerashake for photography that occurs when you press the shutter button, allowing for slower shutter speeds. And it does this well. It’s not intended for video stabilisation, especially not for walking around and vlogging. What people also need to keep in mind is that steady hands comes with practice, and if you put in the effort as opposed to relying on tech, you will have more stable photos and videos as a result.

the ZV-E10 does have an in body electronic stabilization, but it's indeed not as good as catalyst ( except with some ultra wide lensese like the 11mm F 1.8 ). Catalyst have an other great feature since it's able to negate most of the rolling shutter with is a really good thing considering the rolling shutter with most of sony APS-C cameras. And last point, catalyst have the tendency to crop too much but you can have great stab even at 10/15% crop with it.

When I was getting interested in wedding videos, I bought a 9 or 10 y/o Sony NX30 (FHD 60fps) w/BOSS (Balanced Optical Steadyshot) mechanical stabilization for $200! (Even now they still sell for $500 - $1000). I was very fortunate. 🙏🏼 Works quite like the IBIS that you were demoing (or perhaps a bit better). However by adding removing the shotgun mic+XLR handle and putting it on a 3 axis gimbal, I've not get Romantic half speed slo-mo super smooth videos at Full HD for around $350 !! (2nd hand Rage3 Gimbal) 🤓 I also have a VG30 w/similar specs but uses interchangeable lenses. I use the smallest ones with Optical Stabilization and voila! APSC image quality (good "bokeh") w/the same super smooth result. (On the Gimbal or for semi-static shots.) 😕 One thing I don't get are Picture Profiles. Oh well, faster turnaround.

Being a Sony a6100 user going on three years now , I had one of your comparison videos on my Watch list on YT for that long. Boy, I'm I sorry it took me that long to get to you. Been watching MANY of your video today. And while I've had my eye on the Fimi Palm Pro 2 for several months now, the video you shot in NYC was the deal clincher. Ordered it minutes ago. ( I had the original DJI Pocket Osmo for 20 months until I dropped it and destroyed the gimbal) All this is besides the point of this ramble. I use my a6100 mostly for still shots. The video end I leave to my GoPro Hero 10 and the many drones I own as well. But I am looking to upgrade from the a6100. And while I've been eyeing the Sony line of the 7000 series, the prices are a little off-putting. So I'm going to start doing my typical, 6-12 month research (Hem & Hawing) on getting the ZVE-10. I think this would provide another great option for video as well. Thank you sir, you are a wealth of information.

interesting observation. even something as tiny as a insta onex2 has excellent stabilisation- and thats for action videos- something no eis or ibis can compensate for.

Smaller sensors are much easier to stabilize! To get the same in-body results with an APS-C sensor Sony would have to make a larger, more complex, more expensive body!

What i am curious about is just how much resolution you lose on the EIS when it crops in against a 6600/6100 which is a fixed 4k (albeit ibis/shakey).. I see the ZVE-10 outputs 4k.. but if it is cropping an 18mm to say a 23mm to get the jitters out.. then how much of that 4k is it cutting out?
@SONYAdicto
@SONYAdicto Жыл бұрын
you get about 80-90% of the resolution, depending on the clip

@@SONYAdicto so that would explain the 6k downsampled to 4k spec then.. to counteract the EIS cropping... Many thanks!

There are 2 types of EIS in ZVE10. The first is in-camera EIS, doesn't work as well but you don't lose resolution. The second type, as shown by Arthur in the video, you run unstabilized 4k clip through the app Catalyst Browse in PC/Mac and crop out about 10% to achieve stabilization, you get fantastic gimbal-like stabilization but you do lose 10% of resolution.

To literally anyone out there 😅 I have a 6100 and a Ronin SC, but can never get it balanced right OR it just takes so long because the camera and lens is so light. (also prob just me. lol.) I see so many mixed reviews on gimbals, i really just don't know which one to choose. Should I stick with the ronin and just practice? lolol. Or get something smaller?

Very important, useful vid! I recommend a gimbal, but you gotta workout those arms. Don't skip arm day

Great video. IBIS does suck on the A6600, I just wish Feiyutech customer service was better. My gimbal was lost in the mail (RMA)and I was never notified.

I have a6400 and zv-e10. First is alot better for stills with stabilized lenses (17-70, 70-350), the zv is alot better if you shoot video with Sigma / Viltrox primes without stabilization (as catalyst doesn't work with lens OSS). Also pairs well with Sigma 18-50. Yes, Catalyst is boring, but beats carrying a gimbal while traveling for me.

just to be clear you were getting the results from the zv-e 10 using catalyst browse and NOT "active" stabilization that is built into the camera?

Yes, I think he mentioned the amount of work it takes to stabilize in post for the EV10 but it looks really good, which is why he recommended the gimbal overall. Especially, for older APS-C Sony models and those with IBIS. You have to stabilize footage using something like Catalyst when using the ZV-E10. The others would look best on a gimbal and you don't have to correct in post. But it comes down to budget. If you have the older cameras and don't want to stabilize in post then get a gimbal. If you don't mind stabilizing in post, then get the EV10. He used the Sigma lens on all three tests which does not have any OSS (optical stabilization) in the lens. He tested the EV10 which has EIS and had to be stabilized in post, the a6600 using only IBIS (in body image stabilization) and finally the a6100 which has no IBIS or EIS on a gimbal and it looked the best. However, the EV10 crops 4K footage. The Sony A Series cameras won't crop so they will have a wider field of view and look better overall on a gimbal. Also, many reviews on the EV10 report overheating, lack of 4K at 60fps and limited shooting time in 4K because of the small battery.

@@hasenmyer what did you find wrong with it? I thought it looked really nice, but after reading and seeing the reviews I learned quite a bit. It will be interesting to see what Sony releases next in the APS-C line once the chip shortage is resolved. Looks like the EV10 is the only thing you can buy new right now. *Scratch that. It looks like they are back on sale again.
