How does the Sony a6400 vs a6500 compare when it comes to stabilization? Is the lack of IBIS in a6400 over the a6500 a dealbreaker, and is a Sony OSS lens enough to stabilize your handheld footage? Personally, I'm using the a6400 both for vlogs as well as in my professional workflow.

With the IBIS in a6500 and better color science of a6400, what should I go for? They are price about same in my country. In future I do plan to use non stablized sigma lenses..

@@adity126 if you're mainly planning to do photos then I suggest going with the A6500 because it has IBIS. @@adity126 I think the A6600 is the best APSC camera out there but like you said, there's an $800 price difference so imo you might as well go for a used full frame camera like the A7 III or even the new A7R IV. Personally, I'm sticking to my A6400 until they release the A7S III because that one is targeted towards videographers and that's all I do, I don't take pictures.

@@srdugar Yeah, that seems about right for an upgrade ;) So, as you know, and I believe that's an EF mount lens setup, that you could use an adapter for the Sony to use your lenses...but again, you may know that. The AF certainly won't be as responsive as the native Sony lenses, and the Sigma line (which I use) is not even noticeable as far as any deficit compared to the native glass. Sigma glass is just awesome on these Sonys, and especially considering the native glass is quite a bit more in some cases, depending on what you're going for. I was a Nikon shooter before, but not really deep into that ecosystem, so the switch (due to primarily reasons for a better hybrid experience) wasn't painful. For photography my friend, if that it is your primary use case I'd then have you lean over to the 6600 if you can swing it. Not sure if you're in the US but I just checked here: amzn.to/2UjB2i3 and it's on sale again. This should have been the starting price all along in my opinion. Are you concerned about having such a wide focal length or would you prefer something you can zoom in with? I mean, I love primes and I always just adjust my distance by either stepping back or into the shot. I did also do a video of the "zoom" capabilities of the primes on a Sony camera...just in case you haven't seen it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoq9faZrds2EY6s

@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 3 жыл бұрын
So I personally use the a6400 more than the 6500. The 16-50 is a stabilized lens, which the 6400 does not have stabilization built in, so as long as you're using a stabilized lens for photography, I think you should be good. @KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
Totally get it. The IBIS is definitely more useful (in my opinion) for photos, and specifically anything that's mid to full telephoto. With these cameras being so lightweight, you can get a much smaller gimbal that offers you stabilization. Honestly, filming with the a6500 at a commercial level for clients, I was filming with gimbals A LOT, even with the IBIS. Sonys are fantastic cameras with amazing autofocus, and the color science has been improved since the a6400 launch, which was also carried into the a6600, but the video IBIS isn't the best. I'll go over this in my upcoming video about the two, but for the price difference of $500 USD between the two, that $ could go toward a decent lens and/or a gimbal like the Zhiyun Crane M-2 or equivalent..depending on the weight of the lens, then you might need something like the Weebill Lab.

Yeah, the Sigma 16mm is the best when it comes to that "clean" image. I'd like to review all the Sigma primes...I have used the 30mm, my business partner uses that on her a6500 and it produces some great photos. Also, going wide and opened up with the aperture like that helps get that bokeh that offers some of that stabilized look. Are you using Sony right now?

Kevin Ross yes, I have the Sony a6400. The sigma 16mm 1.4 is my main lens at the moment. It basically lives in my camera! About 5 months ago I sold my Canon 80D with 5 canon lenses and made the switch at Sony. It was the best decision I’ve ever made. The only things I miss is the bigger grip, bigger battery, and headphone jack. The a6400 beats the canon in every other aspect though. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. @KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
@@willowwatts Well, here in the U.S. (not sure if you're in the U.S.), the 6600 tends to fluctuate in price, and drops to 1198 USD, which where the camera should have started. Here's the argument I've been helping people make, with the 6600 having IBIS... It's not the best IBIS, but it's something...You'd have more options with third party lenses that are less expensive, but don't have OSS. So, the entire investment may be around the same as the a6400 and a Sony OSS lens. However, I do think that the OSS in these lenses is really good, and honestly enough on their own to provide stabilization for video, but I suppose that depends on what you're filming. You're obviously not going to get a gimbal look out of your footage unless you have a gimbal, so realistic expectations are a must here. I personally still use the 6400 all the time and the only thing that I do notice with no IBIS and no OSS lens are sometimes if I'm filming close up on an object handheld that there can be very noticeable micro jitters, which I usually adjust the way I'm filming or I stabilize it in post.

Oh man, I just love this camera more and more every day. My a6500 has become more of a B cam, which I know you'd typically not have two APSC cameras that are so close in specs, but the a6400 paired with the 16mm I use with it is so awesome. If your daughter wants to use it for KZbin, definitely. For talking head videos, most definitely since it has the flip up screen. Now, I will have some videos coming out on a macro setup, but there's a couple of options (one is a trick). You could take the 16mm, pull it off the body and flip it around...basically using the lens backwards, BUT you have to be careful not to scratch the lens element. It's a hack for sure and takes some finesse . There's also an easier "fix" by using a macro tube: amzn.to/2GTb7XL I reviewed the Sony 18-105 and this paired with a macro tube (zoomed in) should meet your need without having to purchase a separate lens. We've got some product photography sessions coming up and will be using this very set up.

@@KevinRossRN definitely appreciate the fast reply! My one friend said that the 6500 IBIS shines through when shooting unsupported at the macro distances. Have you found it (6500 ibis) to be better for the close ups with no tripod and what not? Or like you were saying as long as the lense has oss, than it doesn't make that much of difference? Sorry for incorrect terms I'm sure. And thank you again
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
This is a great question, and something I'll go into more detail when featuring these two cameras for photos. The IBIS in the a6500 (or really any of the sony cameras) for use in video isn't that great. I personally think the OSS lens offers better stabilization in some situations. Now, as far as photos, this is where the IBIS is helpful, especially trying to get that tack sharp look when unsupported. I rarely shoot anything at the macro level unsupported...well, with the caveat of these shots occurring in a studio. Locked off tripod always. If I'm not using a tripod, then I'll end up putting on a camera strap to then create tension from the neck, down to the camera (handheld) to offer up some stabilization. I don't want to necessarily say that you always (MUST) have this locked off on a tripod, but if you really want to go handheld for photo most of the time (macro) or even zoomed in on the subject from a distance, say 100-200+ mm, then you could notice some shake in the shot, but the autofocus on this thing is just sick, especially with the eye AF. If I'm shooting in burst, and my shutter speed, lighting, ISO is where it needs to be, then most of those shots in my experience has been that they are in focus. If this doesn't answer your question specifically, then let me know. I just wanted to provide you with my use case and the context in how I use it. I'm certainly not a fanboy. There has yet to be THE perfect camera, but I'm just invested in the ecosystem and continue on that path as I haven't been disappointed in a way that limits me personally or professionally.

@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
As I was telling another community member here, I just think that having the OSS lens taking care of the pitch and yaw has some benefits over just having the IBIS take care of it along with the roll, X & Y. I'd like to post an updated video with that very information (specifically) on the difference between just IBIS, and IBIS with the OSS. It's not as if you're doubling or getting "extra" stabilization with the OSS paired with IBIS, it's just that the camera ends up letting the OSS lens handle that Pitch and Yaw, which in my opinion is better in many of my use cases. With handheld I'm definitely at 60fps, sometimes 120fps if I'm not as worried about focus and/or if I really need to slow it down to 25% (or less). I guess a long answer to actually answer your question. In my experience I do notice the benefit with OSS paired with IBIS in handheld video.

Yes, and I agree that the a6500 would benefit greatly from a flip up. The 16mm that I use is so awesome, and fast. I wasn't as concerned on the a6500 with the IBIS, however a bit more cautious with my handheld footage using the a6400 and the 16mm...If I know it's going to be a real problem, I'll just switch over to the kit lens or the trusty 18-105. Sony really confused the market in my opinion. I realize that this was supposed to be an upgrade to the 6300 and/or 6000, but with some of the features (real world, not just spec) that are better than the a6500....good grief why don't they just make it more confusing 😜

And, paired with the Sigma lenses, like the 30mm: amzn.to/2xWBaf4 That's going to give you an equivalent (close to) 50mm. The 16mm and 56mm are also great. Although the 56mm might have too tight of a focal length depending on what how you're filming. This 30mm is a decent macro lens: amzn.to/34hLGK5 Not the sharpest, but if you're doing photography and want to get some of those macro shots, then it could be a good place to start, although the Sigma for macro would likely get you a sharper image: amzn.to/2UPIfaf

@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
Happy to help here and not just focus on the specs alone, except that the a6400 is stated to be about 1 stop "better" in low light. I can confirm a slight improvement in low light, especially when you're having to tweak ISO to get that shot. If you're shooting portraits, sports, or basically a subject where you can take advantage of the Eye Autofocus (Eye AF), then you will notice the performance boost there. I'm getting better results than on the a6500, but better is relative...let's not run away with just specs. Timelapse: I've used the built-in interval shooting (vs. having to use a remote on the a6500 or an app through Play Memories)...and I do love this feature. Love it. Autofocus is slightly better on the a6400 (0.02s vs 0.05s) with native glass, although the Sigma primes...still fast. Is the 0.03 that much different? In real world, likely not a deal breaker, but I'll take it. The sensors in the cameras are the same, it's just the chipset that's different. Referring back up to the AF, this is where the advantages may be realized in overall sharpness and tracking the subject. Lack of IBIS in the a6400...okay, so this is where you really have to consider your use case and environment. Using native OSS lenses are recommended on the a6400, and locked off shots for sure. IBIS in video is not really a point of strength here, but for photos it'll offer you some advantages if you're interested in photography, especially without OSS lenses. I go back and forth with the EVF and the LCD, and I do love the brightness on the LCD of the a6400 shooting outdoors. The more I use the a6400, the more I like about it and the less I find issues with it. The a6500 will remain in my kit for the foreseeable, but the a6400 will be the one I choose first. Even if these were priced exactly the same, knowing what I know, I'd choose the a6400. Grab that 16-50 kit lens for the extra 100USD. I didn't used to recommend the kit lens, but I'm swayed by its versatility.

Does the OSS+IBIS make a difference? Which lens is better? And as I will be travelling with it a lot do you recommend the smaller Sony lens? TIA
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 3 жыл бұрын
Based on the info here, I'd steer you over to the 35mm. On the APS-C sensor (cropped) of the 6600, that'll give you a full-frame equivalent of around 50mm, which is a great all around focal length, which is roughly the same ( a little less). I truly love the Sigma line up and the sharpness of this lens and colors (I think) are a bit better than the Sony. So then why am I recommending the Sony? Travel, and autofocus. The smaller the kit the better when it comes to traveling. And, the autofocus on the Sigma is really good, but the Sony still beats it with the autofocus. The colors are still good with the Sony even if the Sigma is marginally better, but still really good. The OSS in the Sony lenses are fantastic. Honestly, I rely more on the stabilization in the lens, and the OSS +IBIS will more than be able to serve your needs. A great combo. So, for your needs, 6600 + Sony 35mm

Yes, you can do that. I do it on my 6400...if you mean a locked off shot and then going from one object to another in the frame with a touch of the LCD..yes. Are you looking for another compact lens? The camera is certainly important, and the 6400 is a great photo camera...but it's the lens that is most important, and a cost that many may not realize as being more expensive than the camera body. So, if you're shooting from a distance and would likely need a lens that's good in low-light as well, not to mention stabilization built in this may be harder on that budget. The 18-135: amzn.to/34uLgST is a better lens for photography than video in my opinion, but it does have an aperture of 3.5-5.6 (variable based on the focal length). You can definitely push the ISO a bit on the 6400 and still get decent images in low-light. I went out filming the other night and I'm literally editing that video now...Although I did film with the Sigma 16mm which has an aperture of 1.4, so it lets in a lot of light.

@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
If you can save your money for the 6600, I'd suggest this camera for photography. Here's why: 1. It has built-in stabilization (IBIS), which I think in body stabilization is better for photography, especially at longer focal lengths. ..That being said... 2. The body is more expensive than the 6400, but the 6400 doesn't have IBIS. However, with the IBIS in the 6600, this would allow you to invest in very good lenses that are less expensive. Many Sony lenses have optical steady shot in them, however they are more expensive. Whereas the third party lenses from Sigma and Tamron are very capable and sometimes at half or a third of the price. So, even though the 6600 is more, combining it with a non-stabilized lens at a lower price might allow you to come out ahead. It just depends on what focal length you're looking for. Full-frame lenses are definitely more expensive. And, the A7ii is a nice camera, but the autofocus on the 6600 is going to be better in my opinion.

Will I definitely miss the IBIS+OSS when shooting zoomed OR lowlight (linger exposure)? Your vid was more on track of what I needed to see. Currently there are NEW A6500 bodies for $899. Same as A6400. I will shoot maybe 20% Vid, 80% photo. I was set on the 6500 until I looked into the autofocus/eyefocus/lowlight/battery upgrades of the 6400. Then I thought, ok 6400 it is. First glass purchase would have to be Sigma 16mm f/1.4...looks beautiful. I just want to make sure I’m not screwing up.
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
The a6400 takes some beautiful photos. I don't typically have any issues with focus or jitter with the Sigma 16mm. If you're using an OSS lens, then you're going to be fine. However, to your point of being zoomed in, this is where you're going to want OSS or to at least be locked off. I have the Sony 85mm full frame, which is ~127mm equivalent on the 6400 and wow that lens is sharp...as a tack. But, the problem is that it's not a stabilized lens, so anytime I'm shooting with it I'm using a monopod or some other stabilizer with it when taking photos. I still have the 6500 and it too takes beautiful photos, but there is something ever so slightly noticeable in the color science with the recent upgrade in the 6400...Same sensor, yes, but there's slightly better output with an also slightly better bump in ISO range with it. I get where you're coming from and I think Sony just confused more users than actually helped with they added the 6100, which I would hands down recommend the 6400 over that body. The pricing of the 6600 although right around where the 6500 was when it was launched seems in line, but now that the A7iii is coming down in price we're starting to see these two cameras way too close, however I understand the full-frame vs. APS-C setup is another debate. But to reiterate, that 16mm on the 6400 is great, but the question really does come down to let's say wanted to save a little money and purchase mostly Sigma and Tamron lenses to save some money, and to really get very comparable glass, then IBIS may be what you need, especially zoomed in. However if you think you'd have a mix of Sigma and Sony native with OSS, I'd personally go for the 6400 and just be mindful of my focal length needs...and stabilize when/where I needed to.... Not exactly sure this helps, but I can understand you wanting to make the right decision here. Have you thought about renting a body for a few days to give them a try?

Yeah, that would be a good piece of kit (either 6400 or 6500) for around 2K. You may not find a lot of need for that 50mm...maybe? But it is a really good price. Full frame is just another beast altogether. If you want it/need it, sure...but these APS-C cameras are very capable. @KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
The a6500 would be a good deal at that same price, however you won't get those extra picture profiles...color science is ever so slightly different. Basically you're getting the IBIS, which is not the best when compared to other cameras, but it's still there. Would you miss having a flip up screen, and how about the 30minute recording limit? We will see these deals in the next couple of months that will cause more confusion because there's some additional pending releases that we're anticipating in the pipeline. Not APS-C cameras, but likely an A7iii successor, which could potentially push pricing down of all these APS-C cameras...but simply put, if you've answered those questions and you're still good with it, it's a VERY capable camera. @KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
Okay, I just wanted to see what the pricing differences were because the 6600 is now 1,100 USD, but I know not all countries have dropped the price. Here are my thoughts: I do love the 6400 for the way that I film. Having the flip up screen is really helpful, and I've also been able to get the shots I need without a gimbal, but rather stabilizing my video in other ways...I did a video on that. What I also love are the Sigma lenses. The value that you get for the price...at least the price here in the US, it's amazing. They are sharp lenses. Now, I obviously know these don't have stabilization, which is your dilemma. Actually, many people's dilemma. If you were able to obtain the 6600 with the IBIS, then I'd say go for that because in the end you could potentially be saving money because the Sigma lenses are cheaper than the Sony. However, the 6500 is still a good camera no doubt. I still have it and use it. Going back to the 6400 however, I would still choose it over the 6500. That Sony 35mm 1.8 is a good lens, which will give you about a 50mm full frame equivalent focal length, which can be a sweet spot for both filming video, and portrait photography. Photos, especially at a longer focal length benefit from the stabilization. Yes, stabilization with video is important, but there are ways to stabilize when filming and in post. The a6400 has been, and I believe still is the better value for many filmmakers.

The whole point of IBIS is the cut out the micro-jitters which are nearly eliminated due to the weight of the rig you were using. This should be pretty obvious to most video shooters by now...IBIS in Sony bodies is completely useless for video. There, I said it. The difference in quality between the video shot with stabilization vs without is minimal. Only a gimbal will get you the requisite stabilization for quality video...that is unless you're shooting a remake of the Blair Witch Project. For stills, it may be useful for those low light shots (without flash), shot without a tripod, where the subject is still. Then you may see a benefit. But how often do you truly shoot that way? If you shoot any moving subjects, then IBIS/OSS is, to a great degree, meaningless unless you are a sports/wildlife photographer using superzooms. And even then, you are likely to be using a tripod/monopod. As such, if you have IBIS/OSS, then more power to you, but you should not base your decision on that feature unless your style of shooting is truly going to benefit from having it.
@KevinRossRN

Please Help Me I Can't Decide Between A6400 VS A6500! I Am A New Vlogger And Currently Using Canon 200D With Kit Lens 18-55mm And Soon Upgrading To One Of Them But I Want Rotatable Screen As Well As IBIS Because I Use It Handheld And I Will Be Using Kit Lens! Please Suggest Me Which One Should I Buy Because I Am Thinking That If I Buy A6500 And Use Kit Lens, As I Won't Be Able To See My Face, Maybe My Face Gets Cut Etc When Taking A Shot! And If I Buy A6400 So Maybe The Footage Will Not Be Stable! A6500 With 10-18 Is Perfect But I Don't Have Budget For That And A6600 Is Like $500 More Expensive In My Country! Please Suggest!
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 4 жыл бұрын
So in my opinion, if you're using the kit lens with the camera, I assume the 16-50? That lens has stabilization in it, and should be plenty stable for you even without the IBIS. As you probably saw in the video the IBIS is "okay" in terms of stabilizing the sensor in these Sony cameras. I believe the OSS would be enough for you to do handheld. However let me also say that the flip up screen is nice for sure, but with the 16mm focal length, you'll likely be in frame anyway. But as I said to another person here in the community the 6400 is a great value compared to the other cameras. The 6600 did drop in price in the US, but it sounds like it hasn't in your country just yet. Either way, 6400 with the kit lens will be great.

a6400 all the way. If it's in your budget, the kit lens for the extra $100USD is worth it. Although when you're ready for a step up, for vlogging that is...then the Sigma 16mm is really hard to beat. I really don't think you'll be disappointed.

@@firebld it'll serve you well. I've been doing more product photos and doing more this month. Again, the sensors are the same in these cameras, but there are some advantages to the a6400 like 1 stop better in low light, the auto focus is slightly faster, the HLG picture profile for video to name a few. If your shots are locked off or using a stabilized lens, your photos are going to be just fine.

If you're going to shoot locked off talking head stuff, there's no doubt the a6400 is the best crop Sony camera. In fact, a 6400 with any of the G master glass below f4 can produce absolutely top notch quality for this scenario. Just be aware that your work won't be Netflix capable because it's not 10 bit. So if you're going to shoot with an intention of making documentaries, then you're going to need 10 bit footage.
@KevinRossRN
@KevinRossRN 2 жыл бұрын
Well and being that this particular video is a few years old, there are several more 10-bit options out there now and I agree that it would be the way to go for any kind of filming and editing where you really need to push those colors without them falling apart in post. But for talking head, I still use it in the studio. But also, yes, some great lens options would only help push what this camera is capable of.

There are certainly opinions for either... To many individuals, 24 frames appears more "cinematic" while 30 frames often has a look that television shows depict. However, I'm not saying one is necessarily better... It's just the look that the Filmmaker is going for. Just opinion of course, but to my eye 30fps that is edited in a 30 frame timeline reminds me of watching a news channel... But again, opinion. 😉📸

That's true. Also think about the lenses my friend. Camera bodies certainly do some of the work, but it's the lens that really helps make the camera. Do a little research on the lenses both for Canon and Sony. What I can tell you is that the third-party lens manufacturers (Sigma, Samyang, Tamron) make some great lenses at a fraction of the cost of the Sony and/or Canon lenses. The autofocus on the Sonys are top notch, especially for the type of filming I do. We'll see what happens when the new Canon cameras are launched, although that'll obviously be delayed for a bit.
