I think I'd technically prefer the headphones for some cases based on this comparison but I'll probably still go with the earbuds. My main reasons are: - I very rarely do phonecalls in general, even less so when I'm on the way somewhere. Therefore the voice quality doesn't matter to me very much - I might use them for running at some point and I don't want sweaty padding - My main use will be while going to and coming back from work. For that portability and waterresistance are nice to have - It's unlikely I'll use them without interruptions for more than a few hours often so I can probably charge them in the case between uses - The earbuds are cheaper What I will miss that the headphones would have provided: - I think I'd prefer the more open sound but for travelling I'm fine with earbuds - 3.5mm headphone jack to use them without bluetooth (my desktop PC doesn't have bluetooth for example if I ever wanted to use them with that) - Better microphones / voice clarity for the rare cases when I do make a call with them - Longer runtime if I ever make a long trip, although that is really very rare. There could be cases when I'd want to use them a bit longer for work though - Probably harder to lose because the earbuds are small and you'd notice missing your entire overear headphones much quicker So generally apart from the audio experience and maybe sometimes the runtime the scenarios where the overears would actually be better for me are pretty rare and the price, portability and water resistance outweigh the other factors overall.

I have both. The WH over ear has better noise canceling but my ears get sweaty after am hour or two and I have to give them a rest. The noise cancellation on the WF is very good too but not like having your whole ear covered. I listen to audiobooks at night as well as music. I find the WF are pretty comfortable for sleeping and if I turn off equalization, noise canceling, and DSEE for the audiobooks the batteries do last all night. Thanks for the review

I love wearing hats.. I mean real hats. And since I own WH-1000XM4 I cannot wear a hat, when wearing the headphones outside. So I will buy WF-1000XM4 for outdoor use, while I keep WH-1000XM4 for indoor use with computer. Thank you for the review, Aaron! Great as always. Here is my experience I have both the wf-1000xm4 and the wh-1000xm5 and to be honest I thought that the anc was partially broken on xm5s because the noise canceling was so good on the wf-1000xm4's. The buds deal better with all sorts of higher pitch noise; think of white noise from traffic from inside a house its quite but noticeable. The plugs nothing at all the over ears its a little quieter but you can still hear it. The plugs block out human speech way better than the over ears too. Noisy neighbors yep the plugs do a better job. Now the over ears do a pretty good job if you have music playing even quietly and you can't hear hardly any of the imperfections but I like the silence sometimes. In my real world test with no media playback the noise canceling of the wf-1000xm4 (buds) reign supreme. The gap is large enough that if noise canceling is one of the main reasons you are considering either of these get the wf-1000xm4 or buds hands down. I got to say I was a little disappointed with the xm5 because I was hoping they were going to have better noise canceling than the wf-1000xm4 but nope. I must mention my ear holes are small and the small bud tips fit tightly when in. I am relieved to find that I am not the only one who thinks the buds have the better anc. Now the wh-1000xm5 do better in other categories but anc with acceptable sound was my main reason for getting these.

Ever since Apple purchased Beats the quality hasn't been up to par like it used to be. Switched over to Sony and it was the best decision ever. The wf-3 have a terrible battery though. I have both of the xm4's and they both are the highest quality you can get overall.

I am one of those people that was having to stop and recharge my wf-1000xm4 every day because the battery didn't last as long as my day did. The WH-1000XM4 is certainly better but portability of the WF-1000MX4 is a big selling point. I actually like that the earbuds don't have multipoint pairing. My Bose QC35 II headphones have that and I HATE it.

@@aaronloudnwireless my biggest problem is when one device plays a sound that causes another device to cut out. I have my Bose QC35 II headphones paired to both my phone and work computer. If I'm on a call for work and my phone gets a notification the sound from the call drops out to play the notification from my phone and then reconnects to the computer audio after that. It results in missing like 3-5 seconds of what is being said on the call. It's even worse when I'm the one speaking. It got so bad I just started turning off Bluetooth on my phone during work hours.

Multipoint pairing gives you a big advantage, as you can pair at least two different Bluetooth devices without having to constantly switch back & forth from one device to another. That's one of the reasons why I went with the WH-1000XM4 headphones over the WH-1000XM3 headphones in the first place six months ago, as the latter didn't have that option.

I'm using both WF and WH daily at work for many hours and its really crazy what they put in those small earbuds that they sound as good as big ones. It's magic. I adjusted EQ so they sound very simillar now. But I must say that WF have better NC. Its just that its in your ear canal, compare to WH which sits around the ear. I found WF blocking more noise from my surrounding, but its just not so comfortable to use them every day for many hours. You can get ear infection etc.

It could just me by ear shape or just that I wore them longer than intended but I need something I can wear comfortably for 8+ hours. The sound quality and anc are amazing in them though so I would definitely recommend them if you’re not gonna wear them for more than a couple hours

Both are good. Earbuds are more compact. But if you are someone who spends a lot of time listening (calls, music, movies etc) better go for headphones - they would be more comfortable plus they are safer options as earbuds are plugged into your ear canal, closer to ear drums which may cause long term damage to your ears.

Especially when the headphones allow multipoint pairing over the earbuds, which allows you to connect to two different bluetooth devices. Plus the headphones won't easily fall out of your ears like the earbuds will, especially if you happen to get into an accident or something.

I recently bought a pair of the WF-1000XM4 earbuds a few weeks ago after battling with persistent poor fit frustration and problematic Bose Music mobile app issues from a pair of BOSE QuiteComfort earbuds (which I subsequently returned). I found the Sony's far superior and have no regrets returning the BOSE QuiteComfort. With the WF-1000XM4 I prefer the Automatic Wind Noise Reduction Mode to the Active Noise Cancellation's maximum 20 setting. The only issue that I find is the transmit voice audio quality still has room for improvement notwithstanding the recent firmware update.

How did you find the fit between the Sony and bose? I had a pair of Panasonic sb500 but found they kept coming loose and falling out. As the Sony is a similar build I'm worried they'd be the same. Prefer the Sony for looks tho

@@jasonhudson9234The Sony fit me quite well, and the app includes an audible fit test! I have no discomfort with the roll to compress then insert foam eartips. I did however upgrade to the Comply brand tips for the Sony's as the Comply have a very thin internal foam screen to prevent any ear wax or other debris from actually getting to the tips of the Sony. As for the Bose, I kept their current model Sport Earbuds (not noise cancelling) which I got on a Bose Warranty Exchange at a very reasonable price of about $80 (as I recollect). The stock Bose silicone ear tips do not stay in my ears unless I'm sitting motionless; not speaking, nor eating. Absolutely not workable for me for Sport! I did discover on Ebay, a seller providing an upgraded plastic base and foam ear tip solution which works great! With these inserts, the Bose don't fall out. However, I find the Sony far superior in every way -- other than cost. If you have more questions, please post and I'll be happy to share my impressions.

Thank you for this video. I have the xm3 earbuds and am frustrated with the comfort and fit. I fly very long haul (16h in plane + airport time) and my ears hurt after around 8 hours or so. Although I'm forced to take a break anyway because of the battery life. Also the seal is pretty inconsistent because when you sleep you just naturally knock them and I have waxy ears so they slowly fall out if I didn't just clean my ears. This helped me decide to upgrade to the headphones for those reasons.

momentum true wireless 2? the most actual i know are the momentum 3, mostly sold as momentum only. And just that you know.... The Momentum 3 have SUPERIOR sound quality over the poor quality of XM4s, but the noise cancelling isnt by far as good as the XM4s We had also for the test good old DJ sonys (V700 DJ)pretty comparable in sound to the XM4s but ofc the wired V700 get much louder and also sound more detailed than the XM4s could ever sound. Is it because of bad EQ/DSP or a very cheap dynamic driver (or both...) Only for the sake of testing we also compared my 702 AKGs... ofc thats a whole different world. The Sennheiser 550 II are nice and a cheap alternative when it comes to price/sound quality

You deserve much more subscribers than what you have right now...I haven't seen any better review of any audio device which includes mic test and audio test and ANC test as well. When WH-1000XM4 came out, before purchasing I checked your review and same I did for WF-1000XM4. I have made my mind once again because of your detailed and thorough review. I'm already have the WF-1000XM3 and I'm satisfied and fell OK with it, I rather pick the WH-1000XM4 over the WF-1000xm4 because when it comes to in-ear headphones I don't think that it's worth the upgrade . Your hard work is appreciated Aron

Hey Aaron! I’m a big fan and subscriber. I try to watch each and every video you do. I like your style and it is pretty entertaining. My friends are techies and watching your videos keeps me updated and informed of the industry developments. Before I go on, I want to add that the below is my use case, and possibility I’m in the minority. Plus these are all imho observations. This Sony XF and XH comparison is a very relevant and important comparison imho, apart from being very interesting. So thanks for doing this. I own both of these and enjoy both. For this message, I’ll address the XFs as earbuds and XHs as headphones. Portability is the most imp reason I use the earbuds. So when I go to my office, I use the earbuds (I go to office 2-3 days, simply ‘cos I like the change of location, like the drive, and meet my colleagues who I love chatting with and grabbing lunch with…anyways, enough digression here). When I work from home, I use the headphones. I carry a slim sleeve for my laptop (Macbook) so have no space to carry the headphones. Before I explain more, I want to share that I am well invested in the Apple ecosystem, and I use an Apple Watch with cell, so can take calls and listen to music (I have Apple Music subscription as well) without my iPhone with me. When I head out anywhere, I carry the earbuds, primarily ‘cos I want to use it when I get on a call while listening to music is an added bonus. I carry my iPhone in my Jean or trouser pocket, but don’t when wearing shorts or track bottoms where pocket space is less (think gym or bicycling or going into a store for an errand while leaving the iPhone in the car). In such cases, I can take calls or listen to my music without my iPhone in my pocket - so this takes portability to a step further for me. You mentioned in the video that the earbuds only provide 8 hours of battery life but that’s not correct. It charges in the case. I can’t imagine myself wearing the earbuds for more than 8 hours at a stretch, so it would be fully charged for me whenever I use it until the case runs out of juice. The earbuds can be used with one ear at a time, meaning doubling the usage if needed, specifically for work calls. This isn’t possible in the headphones for obvious reasons :-) Another important difference imho - the fit. I think this supersedes all other use cases. I have had such bad experience with earbuds of all so many brands with so many OEM and after market ear tips. In my case, the earbuds fall off all the time and when I use long eartips (converting the earbuds to IEMs - In Ear Music), then my earns hurt. I have aftermarket ear tips (longer Spinfits small in left ear and extra small in the right ear). That problem isn’t there in the XH Headphones. I still use my earbuds ‘cos of the other benefits. The hearphones gets heated up and also sweaty, so makes it uneasy to use for 8 straight hours. I am actually unable to use it beyond approximately 3 hours and need at least a 30 minute break for it to cool down for my ears to be happy using it again. Excuse the typos - am using an iPhone…..

I’ve got the WH-1000XM4 headphones and love them so naturally bought the WF-1000XM4 for while I was outside. I really really didn’t like the fit. I couldn’t get on with the memory foam tips and no matter what size I used felt they were going to fall out. (Yes I did roll the tips in my fingers before putting them in my ears). I found I had to really jam them in my ears and they ended up hurting. I have a set of Bose earphones and really missed the little hook on the earpieces. I felt the noise cancellation was poor tbh, maybe I’ve been spoilt by the WH-1000XM4’s noise cancellation. I’ll admit the bass was v good but I just wasn’t blown away. The WF-1000XM4’s went back. Each to their own I suppose.

I just got the WF-1000XM4 earbuds to replace my WH-1000 XM3 Over ear headphones. I travel frequently and I was really hoping these would replace the Bulky XM3’s. Im so disappointed! The ANC is barely noticeable…compared to my XM3 headphones. Im not sure if I got a defective pair? Or my ears are just super sensitive…I even tried to reset the earbuds, and tried all three size foam tips. I will be returning these.
