Right, one thing I need to address here as I see it with most phone reviewers. Dynamic range is the ability of a camera to record details in highlights and shadows beyond what it's displayed in the image. Now, just because the camera CAN do this it doesn't mean that is SHOULD (display it). There is one thing to have details in highlights and shadows and another thing to have an image ruined by excessive HDR, making it look flat, washed out with no contrast. That's not dynamic range. The details in the shadows and highlights are not important, what is important is that you expose the image for you SUBJECT. Sometimes photographers besides using rule of thirds, leading lines etc in their composition, they make intentionally dark areas darker and bright areas brighter if it helps them in their composition, trying to "guide" the viewers eye through the frame and finally to a stopping point, which is usually the subject of the photo. If you take just a snapshot without any composition, than excessive HDR will only make it worse as everything looks the same and now the viewer really has no idea what you were trying to show. Details in the shadows and highlights are pointless if your photo is about nothing. As a conclusion, here's an example. Try to google "sunset portraits", select images. You will see stunning pictures with beautiful girls at the golden hour with the sun really bright behind them. Are the highlights blown out and sky is completely white? YES. Does it matter? No, because the image is exposed for the subject. Is that "bad dynamic range"? Heck NO. Is the picture absolutely superb? Heck YES. I couldn't care less if the sky behind me has bit's of it that are white instead of blue. Better than having blue beard because of pushing the shadows too much with HDR that the beard is no longer black.

You explained it so well. But the issue is that when people are trying to 'compare' two entities they need some kind of measurable or visible reference value. Because anything related to image quality is in real life so much subjective that its really hard to define winner cameras because everyone has different taste and different expectations. So the KZbin channels need to have something that can point out the differences and hence they talk about dynamic range. What you are saying is perfectly true but also it is something which is not understandable to the general users and audiences. The general people have always a tendency to go with the numbers and not the feel of something. What you are saying is definately coming from a person who actually feels the images and have tried telling a story using images. But the general people just want a camera that has the possibility to make vibrant memories and hence the success of Samsung and Iphone cameras. I myself have been using the Sony Xperia 1ii since a week and i must say that the images this phone is putting out is just beautifully breathtaking. It is on par with the Iphones and the Galaxies in terms of auto mode and if you use manual apps then there is not phone that can come close to this at least for a year. As i am using the final version of the software I think there is a difference between what the review units were and what the final product is. There is no issue with the auto mode. And as i already said, if you know what you're doing, just use the pro apps and you will be amazed at what this phone can do. I have used a Xperia XZ2 Compact before and I am using a galaxy note 10 plus, and iphone 11 pro regularly. And i know that i would take much better images with these new batch of Xperia phones than with any other cameras. I am very sure that sony is already on the 'concerned about competition' list of samsung, oneplus, redmi, and apple.

It's on par/mostly better and noticeably consistent (no matter which of the the given apps you use) compared to any flagship phone out there. The selfie camera is improved in the final version than the one in this video but still is very mediocre in performance. I don't take lot of selfies but i can surely say that if you're a person who likes taking selfies then just ignore this phone. But everything else than the selfie camera is perceivably better than other flagships.

Wow honestly, I got the Xperia 1II and I am wondering how did u manage to get such bad Pictures with the Xperia 1II?? I have it for 11 days now and the Back cameras are really great, I am verry Happy with the Pictures, especially with the 20fps burst Mode, it's amazing. You did not even show one picture from burst Mode and what this Phone is capable of. FYI: night Mode and RAW Support are coming in a Software Update in July. Verry dissapointed with your Review!

Personally, I don't give fck about the selfie camera. I don't take selfies enough to justify complaining about it. Since I watch a lot of movies and play games, the reasons I want the Mark II is the 4k OLED, headphone jack, HS feature, Playstation compatibility, and front firing stereo speakers. And I actually love 21:9. Feels good in the hands too. The 20 fps capture AF/AE and Alpha cameras are icing on the cake, WAY BETTER than my Xperia 10 plus I currently have right now.

I agree with both of you, but for me who has always had a Samsung or Apple. I found Sony Xperia 1 mark 2 to be different in a pleasing way. The design , feel in the hand, the screen. I'm hoping the auto camera gets better with updates and also like Mr Mobile said the pro version fixes the auto camera, which isn't slot to fix. I really enjoy it slot more than I thought I was. Brilliant video as always, great having Mr Mobile on.

MrMobile said it all, the others tend to overprocess things, while Sony does "real photography", that's what I'd want from a company like them. What could be better is giving people the option, but Night Mode is supposed to be coming, and it's available on their 10 II, maybe an update will change that. Also, what may be confusing is the new things, like the Photo Pro app and settings it brings. You can use it in Auto mode like the usual camera app, while it allows you to customize some things (DRO, Auto HDR) and it's less easy than all the other phones I agree. But, at least Sony is doing a great job at making a phone that can deliver on what it should (according to its specs sheet). For sure, it doesn't make it a smartphone for everyone, but this is clearly not a bad smartphone because it doesn't do like the others. As said in the video, a niche product. They just need to implement some things if they want to make it a "more for everyone" smartphone.

@@Mckaluge I'm using the Xperia 1 since around one year now. I never shot a picture in auto mode I think. Sony was always about manuel mode, if you can't handle shutter speed, ISO etc then sure, you will get bad photos, especially in low light. But if you know what you are doing, you can get really nice photos. And before people say:" Then you can shot on your A7r or what ever". Are you every carrying an 900gramm camera with you or in your car? I own an alu tripod for around 10 bucks, whenever I leave the house I just throw it in the car and if I need it, it takes like 1 min to set up. And even like 2-4 seconds shutter speed are manageable with steady hands.

I see your point about the selfie camera but honestly the headphone jack, front facing stereo speakers and an actual fingerprint sensor really make the experience better than the rest personally. The S20+ is a great phone but it doesn't have a headphone jack. It doesn't have front facing speakers. It doesn't have a shutter button. These are things important to me unlike a portrait mode. I never bought into the artificial blur craze and I think SONY know that a lot of the people that use their phones don't really care for it either. I'm happy with the X1ii especially because of that headphone jack 👌

EXCELLENT review Saf! Thanks for including the Photo Pro app shots, which are the ONLY ones I even care about since you can do Auto mode in it and it's clearly superior to the stock app. And I have NO interest in doing manual work in the Cinema Pro app. I couldn't agree more that Sony needs to cut the shit and start focusing their phones' capabilities better. MORE focus on what consumers want, NOT on what photo pros who already OWN fancy cameras want but already get from their fancy cameras! Not improving their front cam was a sin, though not nearly as much as excluding ALL 5G bands in the U.S. but not discounting the price at all, and NOT including a dedicated Face Unlock in 2020. They also need to really punch up that screen brightness by like DOUBLE. Hopefully they fix that overexposure issue too soon. Thank you also for having Mr. Mobile on too. FANTASTIC collaboration! I look forward to you guys reviewing the camera on the Xperia Pro as well!!!

i keep rooting for Sony to improve on their camera since forever. I owned one of their flagships in 2013-14? it was a heck of a phone. The camera was hit and miss but the experience was awesome. It was the pixel experience before the pixel. I miss it honestly, but refuse to pay that much for a mediocre shooter at best.

Good discussion, but the critique about the CinemaPro app locking the exposure during recording is a bit misunderstood. It is purposeful that the exposure doesn't change. When filming, it is not desirable for the exposure to automatically adjust when the creator has an intended vision. CinemaPro isn't meant for "run and gun" style filming. You first plan your shot, adjust settings, and then take the shot. Any corrections that need to be done on video are done in post-processing. That's how it's done in professional environments. It would be a nightmare to correct for constantly shifting exposure in post.

Don't agree with 15:55 I've never used a Sony alpha camera before and I'm not a professional photographer, but I just love the idea that Sony are putting these pro modes into a lightweight phone, without the need to separately buy a expensive bulky Sony alpha camera, it allows people like me to get/dabble into pro photography. The 20fps and eye tracking is also particularly impressive. Oh and everything else about the phone is on point as well. Engadget did a review of the camera and showed an amazing picture of a fast moving cyclist which blew my mind.

Love your review. As an owner of xperia 1, the HDR on xperia 1 is improved a lot after may 2020 security patch. For the blown out problem, maybe you could switch the metering from face or spot to multi.

Phone reviewers always put the biggest emphasis on phone cameras when reviewing phones, yet when there are devices that actually warrant more in depth camera reviews, they just rate them based on how useful they are for Instagram like everything else. We like to complain how phones are all so similar nowadays, but what do we expect when every influencers rate phones based on how good they are overall at literally the same categories despite not being marketed as such. It's like reviewing a Lamborghini based on gas efficiency, trunk size, kid safety and number of seats. They are not at all the point of the car.

The difference in quality is not that much of a difference, all flagship phones take great pictures, is all preference in choosing which...the most important spec has to be the display and performance...is not like the xperia 1 ii camera suck...it's one of the best but the phone is unique and different than every other flagship Android....look at one plus, Samsung and other phones with punch hole, they are so similar, u can't even tell the difference if u use same launcher hahahah

Hello, SuperSaf! It's interesting to hear your opinion, but I have to disagree on some points. 1. Sony's auto mode works differently from other phones. Once pointed at the object you have to give the camera 1-2 seconds to react and understand the scene. Just like a real camera. After that you can't 1-2 seconds more once shot is done. Yes, it takes a bit more time than Pixel, Iphone and others, but in return you have excellent colors, good detail. And dynamic range is also much better without overblown highlights. 2. A few words about selfie camera. I do agree that it could have been better, but it's not as bad as you say. Also you can enable auto HDR for selfie camera in PhotoPro and it will be essentially pretty decent auto mode. But the best thing is you can take photos using main camera. All because of the camera button it is very convenient and easy to do after little practice. More tricky for selfie videos tho.

There are instances where an A6600 is way too bulky to be carried around at all times. And when you're getting exactly the same level of pro controls, while also having a great PUBG Mobile device in one package, why even bother carrying multiple gadgets? Besides, it's already expected that anyone who will buy this phone already do own a Sony Alpha camera, since it was targeted to professional photographers after all. To me, Auto Mode is just an excuse to make up for people's laziness on doing the adjustments. Even Photo Pro app offers full Auto mode with Auto HDR, why not use that as default instead? This was clearly a propaganda against this product. If I wanted oversaturated and overprocessed images, GCAM is always around the corner to do that, but no way can I get the same accurate results from the 3 primary camera apps on the other phones as well, so I'm actually getting more on this phone than I do on anything else. And that front camera is rightfully bogus. The front camera is fine, he just happen to enjoy overprocessing from the iPhones, and again, it's nothing to worry about as GCAM will solve it. Sometimes people just love to complain about things first before finding a solution, or even attempting to resolve it. No wonder why it's taking too long to find cure for this pandemic. Sheesh!

The phone is great at the pro stuff and mediocre at the fundamentals specifically when it comes to the camera. This is very much in like with LG v60 great in pro mode and just okay in auto. Folks are pretending they never use auto on photos and video ever in the comment section and we know this isnt true. You auto mode should be great just as you pro mode.
