PLUS, do EBC RedStuff pads dust less than OEM?

The MB specific doc is AR42.10-P-007CMG, at the bottom it list: "bolt, brake caliper/brake caliper support to steering knuckle m12 115 M14 180Nm
So the 180nm should be the bigger bolt to the knuckle and the 115nm its likely the caliper to bracket bolts

Thanks for the video. I've had other cars with similar brake dust issues. I do have the Carbon Ceramic Brakes (CCBs) on my 2018 E63s. Zero brake dust. I mean none what so ever. When I was the car I just give the wheels a spray to dust them off and run over them with my mitt at the end when I've finished the rest of the car, then rinse and let dry. Mainly posting this to let other folks know so that if they have a choice in a future purchase, particularly on a used E63 or similar car where you're not paying the full ~$9500 cost of the CCBs up front, that this is a great side benefit of the CCBs. I purchased mine with CCBs for the fade resistance in case I track the car, but also because I drive it pretty hard on nearby mountain roads. Tried ceramic pads on one of my other cars and it does cut down on the dust, but I'm not so happy with their stopping performance. Used to road race motorcycles and EBC was one of my sponsors and I always had great performance from their pads, so maybe I'll give them a try on my other vehicle.

One thing that you may not have considered that may have had an effect on the outcome of the test is that one side is more worn than the other. This could lead to the ebc brake pad with more thickness to come into contact with the rotor more frequently or more intensity than the worn oem pad. For this test to be fair you would need to test only new brake pads. Even with new brake pads, having mismatched brake pad compounds (left side one brake pad and right side another) could also have an effect on how the car distributes pressure as it is an intelligent electronic abs system, potentially applying additional pressure to the pad with less friction or vice versa, this could skew results in favor of one of the brake pads tested.

checking in with you, the caliper bolts are 180 nm? so ~130ft lbs torque? I've never done brakes in my life but about to do them next weekend. considering lug nuts are 110 ft lbs, seems like this is pretty tight, can you confirm this? and is it difficult to get this torqued while car is lifted? (don't have lift, so will be on jacks)
@ExoticCarDIY
@ExoticCarDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Straight from the WIS, sounds really high doesn't it? I'll be completely honest, there are definitely some things that absolutely require a torque wrench, but speaking from 25 years of doing this and being a certified aviation mech... most everything else "good and tight" is IMO a better option. Ive seen manufacture instructions have wrong numbers before. The MB specific doc is AR42.10-P-007CMG, at the bottom it list: "bolt, brake caliper/brake caliper support to steering knuckle m12 115 M14 180Nm So the 180 should be the bigger bolt to the knuckle and the 115 its likely the caliper to bracket bolts

Is it possible the break in coating caused additional dust? My OEM brake pads make it almost impossible to keep my wheels clean and I also changed my driving habits to minimize brake use especially from high speeds which takes away the fun of having nice brakes… annoying!
@ExoticCarDIY
@ExoticCarDIY 2 жыл бұрын
So drive them for about 800 miles, then I pulled the wheels, inspected the pads to make sure the coating was gone. I cleaned the wheels and drove them again for the test you see later in the video. There are a lot of options obviously, and there's not really anything wrong with the store brand pads. They are generally manufactured by well-known companies anyway. But you'll find that they're still multiples to choose from. Ceramics are generally considered to be the best all around pads. But nothing wrong with the semi metallic other than dust. You really kind of just have to check out the reviews of them.

@@ExoticCarDIY I read your mind! I purcahsed both EBC and Z23 for my vehicle, but I'm on the fence and leaning more towards the Z23 due to cost and many reviews saying they are equivalent in bite/stopping power to EBC. Granted, I have seen many reviews saying that the initial bite isn't as good as semimetallic since it is a ceramic pad, but that should theoretically be the same with the EBC redstuff since also a ceramic.

The takeaway for me is that the stock pads are low dust and quite good and the red stuffs are comparable. Compared to many of the cheaper pads the Red Stuff is fantastic both on performance, noise and dust. Your rim style is open so there is going to be dust on the rims no matter what. You want the pads to wear out not the rotors so dust will happen.

I think what they mean to say is out of there several selections they are the lower dust option. (red versus green versus yellow etc) I'll still go back to what I kind of mentioned in the video, I think the reason that dust is an issue would basically any pad you put on these, is because the pads are almost always constantly touching the rotor. I mean, most people on the forums say they're only getting 20,000 miles out of set of e63 pads, on contrast, my wife's SUV has gone almost 60,000 miles and the pads are half-life.
