I had the good fortune to meet Moses Hogan. He conducted the middle school Florida All-State Choir in the nineties. He was amazing with the students. People flocked to rehearsals just to see him in action with the choir. He was a very sincere, kind man. The results were amazing! I’ll never forget it.

We sang this in high school and in All State, back in the very early 70s. I still love it. And I think this is perfectly paced.

Well honestly, my choral director actually knew William Dawson, and worked on this song with him, herself. She told us that he meant for it to be fast. Not too fast, but like the low chugga chuggaa of a train. So this was actually slow.

The Rutgers Glee Club sang this version outside of Prague in '71 on the anniversary of the Russian invasion in '68. In the town of Karlovy Vary some 5000 people crowded into the square. Most all Czechs speak English and fully understood the power and meaning of the song. People were openly weeping as they grasped the depths of their own slavery under the Russian dictatorship at that time. When we finished on that last powerful chord, there was complete silence for 3,4,5 seconds, then an explosion of cheering and screaming. It was one of the most memorable moments of my life.

The choir I used to sing with sped it up a little bit. Then again, we acted it out so I guess that is why we sped it up.

Great sound, but it's slow and dragging. I feel like this spiritual should move, so that it contrasts with the midsection.
