Fun Fact: Amy's speech about marriage wasn't originally included, but was suggested by Meryl Streep, who wanted to convey to the audience that even if a woman in the 1800s and 1900s was married, everything she had would automatically belong to her husband.

Just turned 26. Never been in a relationship and honestly I have no desire to be. I have other interests and hobbies, I always prioritized familial and platonic relationships and I thought I could do that forever.. but you can’t. Even if you don’t change, eventually your friends and family prioritize romantic relationships. You’re never someone’s first choice. It’s a unique kind of heartbreak because you have to choose it over other kinds. Jo’s experience with and speech about loneliness hits so hard. It’s comforting that this adaptation gives the audience the option to envision a life for Jo where she doesn’t settle for romantic love to be content.

As someone who has been a fan of the original books since I was a kid, I always liked to think that Lousia May Alcott in fact did not want Jo to end up married but did it under the pressure to sell the book. There was a scene where the character Jo is trying to sell her book and the editor is basically like "the only acceptable happy ending for your character is that she gets married" so she slips that in on the end just like Alcott slips in towards the end that Jo ends up married. It's always felt like an "ugh whatever, here's what you wanted I guess" from both the author and character imo

The juxtaposition of Beth surviving and then Beth dying right after is probably one of the best moments in the movie. I know the parallel storytelling isn't everyone's thing but I thought it helped contextualize their future decisions and show them side by side. Also Florence Pugh's Amy is fantastic and Saoirse Ronan's Jo is the best ace representation I've seen as someone who is demisexual. There's a really great breakdown of this in a Tara Mooknee video about Aromanticism I would highly recommend.

Going to the sea did legitimately make people better because Victorian wall paper in homes had a green pigment called Scheele’s green which was a mix of arsenic and copper - so when people would go to the sea with their odd bath houses for a cold plunge and would slowly get better over a couple of weeks, it was attributed to the sea rather than taking a break for their gift-wrapped, arsenic-laced poison-houses. It wasn’t until the very late 1800’s that the connection became definitive … after the pigment was present in like 65% of homes. The literature about sickly wives and children in the Victorian period are not romanticized drama - it’s because their actual houses, which they spent more time in than adult males of the household, were killing them - and any slightly prolonged escape would make them seem better only to return to their poison-homes to die young and inspire tragic novels.

Omg I never knew that, that’s a neat fact!
@kristinrburkett

@@SophiaPhannnMysterious illnesses continued into the Edwardian times and beyond because some people simply covered up the wall paper rather than removing it when the distinctive green colour had fallen out fashion but before its deadly effects were discovered so there was a layer of it that would release vapor when wet or exposed to humidity. People also keep unused rolls in their homes, forgetting about them as they continued to poison later generations - though not as quickly since very little surface area would be exposed to the air. Old preserved homes and even museums still have this paper and there are also vintage books of wall paper samples kept in museums inside gas proof chambers that curators have to wear protective gear to handle.

I think the time between the rejected proposal and Jo’s letter to Laurie is only a year or so, not seven. When Amy sees Laurie in France she says something along the lines of “I heard Jo rejected you, I’m so sorry” implying that this was a recent event.

What happened to me with the 1994 version is that Kirsten having so much screen time made me sympathize more with her version of Amy and not with the actress who plays her older version, so the romance with Laurie looks strange, since we see him interacting mostly with a little Amy, and very suddenly and for a short time with an adult version of her. For me, Florence acts very well the young (and adult) version of Amy. So even though no one believes that her character is 12 years old lmao you can clearly see that she is very young, and in the time jump she is much older.

7:04 i do like the 90s one, but i think their reasoning (in the 2019) for keeping the same actress is because of the chemistry between the sisters, older amy in the 90s just seemed like a stranger in that movie to the rest of the chracters since she never has scenes with them (only in the end)... also interesting that the 90s version seemed to be the only movie to have two amy's, the others just use one and do the caractezation do the context of her age, anywaaay i kinda rambled a lot just to say one thing

@clarasundqvist6013
@clarasundqvist6013 Ай бұрын
@@SophiaPhannn I think keeping the same actresses through the movie also helps sell how the movie views the past. The movie literally shows us the past through rose tinted glasses, all the scenes from the girls' childhoods are warm and have this really comforting orange glow to them, because that's what nostalgia feels like, so the childhood scenes can be viewed as living memories. And when looking back at the past, it can sometimes be difficult to remember exactly what people looked like, so even though you might think about your sister as a child, memories are often blurry enough that you project a more current version of them onto that memory. We also see in the last scene that all the girls looked different in the past, so that just tells me at least that what we are shown is the adult memory of childhood

Louisa May Alcott was a lesbian and Jo is def lesbian coded, she loves Laurie as a friend and a brother but she just cannot see him romantically. As people have pointed out and you read, LMA didn’t want Jo to marry at all but was forced to. The way the relationship with Bhaer is described on the book, Jo isn’t even attracted to him they just have an intellectual connection. LMA really made it as clear as she was allowed to that Jo was not interested in men

In the book it makes a lot more sense, and feels more fair that Amy gets invited to the trip to Europe. One because I don’t think the Aunt ever even offered it to Jo in the first place. Jo never really tried to get along with her Aunt and it’s pretty clear the only reason she goes to read to her is because she wants to be invited on the Europe trip. Amy when taken in by the Aunt is more polite and even does some small chores around the house in both because she is grateful and looking for something to do. That and Amy’s intent to find a rich husband made her the clear choice.

I will always have a place in my heart for the 1990s version because that was the first version I watched (on VHS! Lol) but this one is just... everything about it is so good. Ah yes, the first entry in the "Florence Pugh being Timothee Chalamet's second choice" cinematic universe. I know she's only done three films so far, but I'm confident in calling Little Women Greta Gerwig's best film so far. The non-linear structure of the script is such a good choice, using it to draw parallels between the past and the present and heighten the emotional drama was amazing, as was the way she visually differentiates between the warm golden hues of the past and the cold feel of the present. Plus, there's Alexandre Desplat's absolutely gorgeous score, the fantastic costume design, and the absolutely impeccable performances from pretty much everyone in the cast. I genuinely think this is a modern classic, and it reaffirms Gerwig's status as a phenomenal writer-director. And on that note, having now done this and Barbie, you have to complete the trifecta at some point and do Lady Bird. Also, there's a great subtle bit of meta to the ending, since Louisa May Alcott always wanted Jo to remain unmarried at the end, and was basically pressured into writing her getting together with the professor, especially since Alcott never married in real life (which has led to some speculation surrounding her sexuality and/or gender identity in recent years, an ambiguity which you can definitely read in Saoirse's performance). I think it's a nice idea to allude to that idea here, leaving it ambiguous as to whether it actually happened or, just like in real life, it's just something she came up with to make the publishers happy.

I love this movie! It's my favorite adaptation of this story. I like almost all the characters better in this version, except for Jo who I found to be equal to 94/Winona. Only character I liked better in 94 was the professor. The way it was framed it made sense for Jo to end up with an older intellectual who would challenge her, but since this is supposed to be a subversion of the story to parallel real life, it makes sense he doesn't seem as compelling as 94/Gabriel Byrne. This version was also the first time I bought into Amy and Laurie as a couple, even though I'm still Jo + Laurie forever. Only misstep of this adaptation was having Florence Pugh play young Amy. That school scene was ridiculous.

The older professor character that Jo ends up with was a middle finger Louisa May Alcott gave to the publicists that wouldn't have Jo stay single. "Oh, she HAS to get married? Okay, let me write her "romantic interest" as the least appealing romantic hero I can think of that the readers probably won't want to root for 😃" I think she described him as "most forty" from Jo's pov, so they would be about 17-18 years apart

I love that Gerwig took a more artistic approach to making this film. Little Women has been adapted since we started making movies pretty much (Katharine Hepburn has literally played Jo) - most people know the story by now and just doing another by-the-book adaptation wouldn't have added anything of value. Instead, Gerwig played around with the parallells in the story and with Louisa May Alcott's own life, which makes for a more interesting film and a unique addition to the Little Women adaptation gallery. If you're watching for the first time, the '94 version (or better yet, the mini series starring Maya Hawke as Jo) is probably a better bet, but there's pretty much nothing I don't absolutely love about this version

Oh, Little Women (the book) was my childhood! It was the first more mature book I've ever finished and I still read it every year. All the following statements are my personal opinions. The only Little Women movie I don't LOVE is the one with Katherine Hepburn. It just doesn't feel like the og story to me, but it's still ok. The one with Elizabeth Taylor is great, but I can't look at her and see the baby of the family Amy she was supposed to be 🙈 The 1994 was the best of them for a while and it's still the best as an introduction for someone who has never read the book. If I've never seen Timothée Chalamet in the role, Christian Bale would have been the ultimate Laurie to me. The 2017 series is good, but it doesn't stand out to me as anything special. Maya Hawke wasn't bad in the role, but she just doesn't feel like Jo. The 2018 modern adaptation was very surprising, the characters felt a lot like their book counterparts. Sarah Davenport as Jo especially feels like the perfectly flawed main character and the dynamics between Amy and Laurie is very cute. But as much as I love Lucas Grabeel, I couldn't quite buy him as Laurie. The 2019 film is amazing and my favourite, but I imagine it's highly confusing for people who have no previous notion of what the story is about. For me who knows the story back and forth, it's perfection. I'm sure there are more adaptations, but that's all I've seen. All in all, I'll take your entire stock, thank you!

Yes to the end being ambiguous! I don't see it talked about enough, to me, Jo being with the professor was a little weird, it made more sense to Jo as a person for her to be single but to say she is "taken" at the end. Also, Florence Pugh was acting her lil aah off, it was a strange choice to keep them all the same person even throughout the passage of time, regardless of how good the actresses portrayed them. This movie was very good though.

So soooome context the book/ movie is bit from the actual family of the author The March family is “very poor” because the father taught black children in this school which got him ostracize from communities resulting in the children and family always have unsure economic standing and if they would be accepted or know for sure if they are going to have money in the upcoming months / years I think I read something else too that the father didn’t make it easier on the family that’s why they knew for on the start that money mattered . Also little women is the first ever feminist book AND they have sequels that no one really reads lol I love her look at this book and film the director put in the real little factoids from the author and her family hence why they make little mentions of how wrong slavery is - nod to the real March father , she made it fresh and showing very well known characters seem like new Really wish the movie got more praise during its time - when I saw it I was sitting by a Black women, a white very older grandfather in front of me and a dad behind me taking his daughters/ granddaughters - when the movie ended the father said “That is one great movie !” And the women next me laughed and “yes it was” If only our Joe knew so many years later we are still laughing and crying over her lil stories ♥️

A wild Laura Dern Appears! I respectfully disagree. I think Jo DOES love him, very much, at least based on what I've seen in this iteration. They have an intellectual and emotional connection that feels real, feels promising. It isn't driven by class or a desire for advantageous marriage. But she cannot/will not accept the limitations of being in a relationship which (as Amy points-out later on) is inherently unequal. Nor should she! Talent and character like hers, in a traditional marriage during this time period? It would stifle and suffocate her. It just wouldn't work. Having said that...why can't they create something that DOES work? I kinda wish people would just feel free to negotiate for the things they want with another person when they start a life together. Jo is bright, ambitious, a promising writer, head-strong but also hard-working and has a reasonable understanding of what it means to be in a relationship with a man in 1868. NOW, I understand that this compromises some of the romantic elements of the film, but RATHER than telling Laurie why things WON'T work between them...why not simply negotiate the things they want together? We already know Jo has the patience of Job, especially when it comes to matters of the heart and family (Amy got off lite, IMO, after burning Jo's writing...they might not have had the words to describe her damage back then, but that's sociopathic behavior and REALLY should have been examined, if not outright punished, 12-years-old be damned. You don't let that stuff slide, it only gets worse if not addressed). We know Jo is willing to 'walk the walk' as it were, since marriage was never really in her wheelhouse to begin with, and we know she CAN negotiate for the things she wants, given what we saw with the publisher. Sooooo why not do the same with Laurie? She's not necessarily a dour person, she CAN see the bright side and the possibility of a positive outcome...she has to, given the life she's set herself toward. So is negotiation with a man she cares about simply unheard of? "Laurie, loving you is not the problem. We are different people with different value systems. But because we are friends and have known each other for years, I will indulge this fantasy by telling you EXACTLY what I would need in order for this to work. Firstly, I marry you for love, NOT for wealth or family. I have lost one sister, but I refuse to let the other two leave my life entirely, so I will cultivate my relationships with them for as long as I draw breath. I NEED no other family. Having said that, if you decide to become my husband, it is because you love me...and I am enough for you, for as long as we are together. Let there be no misunderstanding that our children, should we have them (I will not promise one way or the other), will be raised by BOTH of us. You will be as responsible for their caretaking as I, they will look to you far more than children normally would, because our home will be one of mutual understanding and emotional availability. I will not be the traditional housewife, saddled with domestic duties like house-work and child-rearing, while all my aspirations fade into the dark like candle-smoke...I refuse. In fact, my days will be spent honing my craft and pursuing my goals...I will love you, yes, and our theoretical children, and we will build a home together, but it will NOT be like other homes, other marriages. It will be a partnership as well as a relationship...one that may put you at odds with others of similar standing, especially in the circles you travel in. *I* know what this lifestyle means for me, I have been and remain willing to pursue such a life with or without a husband. But if I am to do so with a husband, with YOU...then these are my terms. I will never ask you to sacrifice the things that make you feel happy or fulfilled...but please understand that I WILL NOT surrender my own dreams, simply to take you as a husband. It is one surrender too many. So...knowing all that, what say you?" Then...it's kinda in Laurie's hands, after that. He knows what it means to love her, and now, he knows what it will mean to marry her...and that she can and will thrive without him, if need be. The traditional argument during the time period would be "it's not a man's job to accommodate the career aspirations of his wife"...COOL! Get lost then! She's no worse off, if that's his answer. But at least it negates the YEARS of unspoken BS because of the fidgeting and whinging between people who DON'T KNOW HOW TO TALK TO EACH OTHER! That's what turns me off about books/films like this; manufactured drama as a result of people not saying what they feel or asking for what they want. You've got an excuse up until you're about 14, sure, ok, fine, no one really makes well-thought out life choices at 14...but at Jo's age? With her obvious intelligence and emotional awareness? YES, her approach in the film would make sense if their existing relationship was antagonistic or forced or beyond hope...but it isn't! They didn't even try, really. If Laurie had even half the feelings he claimed to have, he would have at least listened, I'm sure. But to leave it like they did? Such a waste. The publisher is wrong to say that a female protagonist who ends up as a spinster by the end of her book is unmarketable; it's just not true, we have several examples of female protagonists who end their stories unmarried but still accomplished and happy. But any protagonist (male or female) who refuses to use their intelligence or talents in order to manufacture drama for a story? THAT, we could all use less of. It is a good film, mostly because only good films manage to get my gumption up like this. Acting, costumes, settings, characters, all a great cut-out of a mid 19th century romantic American melodrama. Would love to see your take on other films that deal with the same time period...Glory, maybe? Cold Mountain? Gangs of New York? I think Cold Mountain would be fun, even if it, too, has a little bit of that "whhhhhyyyyy???" near the end. Great vid! 😊😊

That’s funny because I really truly felt the platonic friendship between Jo and Laurie. She may have loved him but not romantically. Although yeah I guess it’s up to the viewer’s interpretation. But I do kind of argue against the idea that Laurie would completely give in to her requests if she did give him the option because with the time period that they’re in, there would be a lot of talk and gossip about Jo not being a “traditional wife”. And considering that they’re pretty young during Laurie’s proposal, he could’ve well changed his mind in his adulthood about letting her keep her freedom. But this is all speculation, maybe he would’ve let her or maybe not. But I actually found him and Amy to be a better match (even if I’m doubtful of him not loving Jo anymore lol)

@JH-cs5py Ай бұрын
@@SophiaPhannn Yes he could have, especially during this time period, all he has to say is "what, you thought I was serious? I just said that to seal the deal because you were being difficult". I don't think he WOULD have, but that's a lot of theorizing based on things going a certain way in a certain timeline that never happened in the film. The reason I make the argument, mostly, is because the guy marries into the family regardless of the awkwardness of the situation and the obvious strained relationship between Jo and Amy...WHY would he do that? Why would any guy do that, unless they're either A) a glutton for emotional punishment or B)...still carrying a torch? Married or not, it's obvious he still cares about Jo, his attitude and articulation make that pretty clear. His reaction to Mr. Bhaer and his interaction with Jo seems to imply his discontent at her being smitten with someone else (which I would think would be less obvious if he had, ya know, moved on in a healthy way). There are little hints that he's still carrying a torch. Amy may be a better match, given the circumstances...but this guy has options, doesn't he? He's not a peasant farmer, he's not saddled with the first low-born woman willing to give him kids because his choices are limited. He's a high-society dude with money and time...after having his heart ripped out by Jo (however hopeful he might have been at the future), WHY would he continue a romantic relationship with her (younger) SISTER? He even tells Amy not to marry Fred, but she refuses because she doesn't want to be second place to Jo! Even she sees what this is, despite how she feels about him. NOTHING about this seems very healthy...yeah, they could make it work, fine...but I dunno, something about Laurie's behavior smacks of desperation. Close as he is with the family (and speaking as a guy who had to remove himself from a similar situation) I'm not sure anyone is really being 100% honest with themselves. 😒
