I don't think hating prince Derek ist irrational, he literally couldn't think of any other positive thing than "you're pretty" about Odette. Really dude? Especially since they spent every single summer of their life together. Their falling in love never sat right with me, even at the end of the movie, there just wasn't enough reason for him to suddenly risk his life for her, except awakened hormones maybe. I hope that book is also sent to Prince Florian from Snow White (unless they miraculously make him a lot better in the remake) and Prince Charming (before A Twist in Time between 1949 and 2007). But of course, they wouldn’t even control their big tempers so they would rip these books more than a certain other Disney Prince after them (Prince Adam. I remember someone trying to defend Prince Derek by saying that Odette is the same; she is shallow and only fell for Derek when he became hot (or what I assume is supposed to be hot; I never found him attractive in the slightest). But her lyrics literally state otherwise: 'I see him smiling and my knees start buckling; I see inside him and my doubts have gone'. She sees *inside* him and saw he'd matured beyond his 'Eww, cooties!' phase in life, and when she saw that she realised he was ready for love. His lyrics consist only about her looks: 'She started out as such an ugly duckling; and somehow suddenly became a swan'. Nothing about inner beauty or maturity; he just likes that she's pretty, as if she hadn't been beforehand.

@Toniinbetween Жыл бұрын
I remember this movie had such an impact on me for pointing out that beauty isn’t everything.. but it falls so flat because of Derek! Odette has absolutely no reason to have any positive feelings towards him. He literally bullied her their entire lives, but that’s somehow redeemed because… he learns to love her? The message ends up being “true love is when he loves you for you, no matter who he is or what he’s done.” The bar went from mutually shallow attraction to a woman should be happy as long as a man actually sees her as a person, and she will still love him even when he doesn’t. The worst part is that that’s basically where the bar is in real life, so it’s really just a reflection of heterosexual love as it is instead of the portrayal of a healthy ideal that they tried to make. I mean, how many of us can relate to Odette pining for the guy who treats her like crap just because he showed the least bit of interest? I know I can. So in a dystopian way, this is more realistic than most romantic movies for kids. And writing that out, romantic movies for kids is already a really creepy concept :’) why are we like this?

It was an arranged marriage, what more did they need to be honest, if years of childhood couldn’t make them fall in love, but seeing one another as attractive did
@uMaud Жыл бұрын
I was with you until you claimed it to be a reflection of heterosexual love. Not all men act like this, and a significant amount of women also act like this. @@uMaud I absolutely have a lot of stuff to work on, just like Odette! Of course it’s not going to apply to every man, woman or couple ever, that’s the thing about generalizing. This is just one extreme of a larger spectrum of heterosexual love that a lot of us have learned to idealize. The question is how common it is and what messages we are fed in general, because the fact that a lot of us function this way isn’t just because of some inherent flaw in our personality, it’s taught. Like I said, it’s an extreme, but we don’t exist in a vacuum. I really hope I’m just being cynical for thinking this is more common than what, say, Rapunzel and Eugene has.

The enemies-to-lovers trope went harder in the 90s than the fake dating trope is right now. They went way too far with it in this movie because they made Derek so antagonistic and put all the actual pining on Odette who was just having a normal reaction to such an immature creep. It's very imbalanced and bizarre bcs what writer thought a prince that behaved like the annoying little prick across the street that had 'No Girls Allowed' on his treehouse and only got "better" when the hormones kicked in would be romantic to little girls? I HATED those boys lol
@BrightWulph Жыл бұрын
I always disliked this too, like Odette just wanted to hang out with Derek and his friend growing up, but they were too busy being little pricks. Like yeah, to a certain age, boys are little pricks to girls. But as a girl who had a lot of male friends growing up, it always sat wrong with me. Boys and girls can get along, it's not always antagonistic. But I guess it was that way for "comedy" in the 90's. Anyway, it would have been more realistic for Derek and Odette to have an antagonistic beginning but then maybe soften a little, go through some rough patches as puberty starts to then be reluctant "lovers" to true lovers as when Odette is kidnapped, Derek wants to save his friend that he is adamant that he "doesn't have feelings" for, but then ends up catching feelings. Odette being the one waiting on Derek could be then seen as "he's my friend, of course he's going to save me." While she's powerless due to a spell that keeps her teathered to the castle even when in human form, despite having more freedom as a swan. idk, spitballing ideas.

I don't think Odette's love was as shallow as Derek's attraction towards her. As children, she was obviously the one trying to make an effort to bond with him every summer even though he acted so miserable around her. By the time they're teenagers, she even seems to have started finding it fun to mess with him. And maybe she had thought more deeply about why they could be a well-matched couple if only he treated her better - hence why her "doubts" melt away when he seems to finally put their longstanding rivalry aside and begin acting like a gentleman. If they had Odette tell her father why she was so disappointed, or explain to her animal friends why she's still hopeful about being rescued and reminisce on some of Derek's kinder moments as a child right before she breaks out into Far Longer than Forever, her pining would make a lot more sense, even if it was simply a coping mechanism for her awful situation. Also, when Derek and Odette reunite, it would be nice if Derek apologized and asked Odette if she's still mad at him for being an idiot, and she sort of laughs it off saying that he's always been an idiot - showing that she still found a way to love him despite their constant bickering. And then Derek could properly reciprocate because he realizes he doesn't really deserve someone who is so forgiving and sweet as her. Just a little more character development would go a long way in making their love for each other make more sense, imo.

Happy Birthday Sophia! And I agree the adult versions of Derek and Odette really didn't line up with their young selves. I wish instead of them instantly loving each other when they saw each other as adults that they had showing them becoming friends from a few summers before and at least writing each other but also Derek not being able to think of a single reason for why he loved Odette made no sense.

I remember watching this movie a few times as a kid. I remember liking the build-up to the final moment when Derek and Odette met as adults. I loved seeing the transition song of them growing up. I think the BIGGEST Problem with this movie is the fact that they make it about "beauty isn't the only reason to marry someone" but never do we see Derek get to know her other attributes as kindness, being smart, courageous ..ets and THEN fall in love with her. Even the audience, we don't even learn anything about Odette! I think it would have been awesome if Derek realized that he messed up big time when he mistakenly vowed love for the black swan JUST because she is beautiful and never realized she wasn't Odette because he didn't spend enough time with her to marry her. They should have left it as an open but optimistic ending, or maybe show us that they got to spend time together and fall in love truly.

I feel like it would've been better if they showed a scene of Derek apoligizing to Odette before she left and got kidnapped or worked on fixing their relationship as they were growing from kids to adults like their relationship is the most imporant thing in the movie and they couldn't even make a good backstory for them hating eachother to slowly liking eachother to them loving eachother The movie is supposed to show like an enemies to lovers kind of thing but this movie is more like enemies and still enemies but we are forced to love eachother bcs thats what our parents want so they can combine their kingdoms. And Derek continues to be a dumbass and doesn't realize he made the vow for the wrong girl, and Odette finds a way to break the curse herself just before the time limit. She kills Rothbart herself or something. Happy ending is that she takes all his magic books and becomes a super powerful sorceress queen all on her own. Then end. And she uses her magic to make Jean-Bob human.

18:50 In answer to your question, this movie heavily implies that Odette is unable to speak to people in her swan form, and she is the only one who can communicate with the other animal characters (probably a side-effect of the spell). 🤔 However, this is retconned in the sequels. In the first two sequels, Derek, Odette, Bridget (Rothbart’s former henchwoman), and one of the villains are able to fluently communicate with all of the animal characters (which, to be fair, could be explained by either magic, or Odette teaching them how to understand the animals). Then in the CGI sequels, the animals are able to communicate with anyone. 🙄

I'm really trying to think of how no one could say Rothbart's name throughout the film. I was waiting for a whole scene or explanation if there was some sort of enchantment or spell that made sure no one could say his name (reverse-Beetleguise) so he'd never be caught. BUT OF COURSE THE FILMMAKERS FORGOT THAT PART APPARENTLY, OR ELSE SOPHIA WOULD'VE POINTED IT OUT. 😫 Edit: I couldn't help but think about the frog honestly. Like 1) as much as he loved Odette, Odette never loved him. Like you probably need true love's kiss and not just a kiss from a princess to break the spell. Duh. and 2) In one version of The Frog Prince, the frog never got kissed to be turned back...he was thrown at the wall by the princess in frustration over all his little menial tasks because he was promised by the princess to help him. Now I'm just thinking of that scenario where (cartoonishly) the frog would just magically get transformed into a prince just by getting thrown at the wall lmao 🤣

The issue with this movie, is that odette also had no reason to fall in love with Derek either. Like, if someone asked her that same question, what would she say??? Because they didn’t fall in love through their childhood. That’s why binding fully understand the hate for Derek. Sure he’s the one who said it out loud, but she only fell in love with him because of his looks too.. she wasn’t in love with him when he was younger and was hoping he would fall in love with her too. And then it was an arranged marriage that neither wanted in the first place.. why do people out so much on Derek, when his answer made sense lol

What floors me is that, he's literally known Odette for their entire lives, and legitimately struggles to find a non-superficial reason to love her. That, and from their teenage years into young adulthood, Odette seems to have retained none of the wit, confidence, or humor that we saw in This is My Idea. Remember girls, you can be either a person or you can be beautiful - both is not an option.

In Derek's defense when he says: what else is there, it was because he realized he was in love with her always but he couldn't articulate why, and he was hoping that she would help him to understand. And that's why when it was brought up again he goes well there's her... and then the way... she literally took his breath away. It is possible to love a person just by seeing them. If you don't believe me explain a mother's love for her newborn child. The child hasn't accomplished anything yet and yet she already loves her child instinctively. I think that was what Derek was trying to say, that he always loved her instinctively deep down but he never realized it until he saw how beautiful she was, and he expressed his love for her in her beauty. He says: you started out as such an ugly duckling, but somehow suddenly became a swan. In the story of The Ugly Duckling the duckling was always a swan. In other words she was always beautiful to him but he never realized it until now.

Fun fact: Richard Rich was a Disney Animator and then he was fired from Disney in the mid 80’s because Peter Schneider who was Vice President of Disney Animation at the time had issues with him. Liz Callaway also did the singing voice for Jasmine for The Return of Jafar and Aladdin and The King of Thieves and the singing voice for Kiara in The Lion King II Simba’s Pride
@janeyrevanescence127 ай бұрын
From what I understand of the situation, he was fired because of the massive flip that was The Black Cauldron…which itself suffered from massive Executive Meddling to the point Jeffrey Kratzenburg personally cut out several minutes of film in the cutting room after a test screening resulted in several crying children and parents complaining about the film being too scary. Ironically enough, the failure of The Black Cauldron and subsequent mumblings about the animation department being shut down is what convinced the animators left to bring their A Game to the next project, The Great Mouse Detective. It was just enough of a success (despite An American Tail coming out that same year) that executives had enough confidence to put more money into the animation department, which led the way to the Disney Renaissance of the late 80’s to the end of the 90’s. So yeah, thank Richard Rich and Don Bluth for getting the ball rolling.

Just incase some people are confused as to why we hate Derek but love Odette: They were both told their entire lives that they would be betrothed, that’s one of the main reasons why they liked each other in the first place. Matter of fact, that’s probably the only reason why Odette liked Derek, but we can’t make a proper theory based off of a hunch (Odette’s reaction to Derek’s reason as to why he likes her also disproves this because her reaction was kinda like, “I like you for you, why do you only like me because I’m pretty?) Derek openly stated that he only likes Odette because she’s pretty and no other reason. Not to mention he doesn’t apologize at all despite knowing it upset her and everyone else around them. In short, Derek is douche and doesn’t deserve Odette in the least. She deserves someone who not only likes her because of her beauty, but will love her for her personality and companionship, like me 🫦

My favorite clip was during the "My idea of fun" Uberta talks about how they're getting along, while Odette is trying to strangle Derek in the background. I hate how "My Idea of fun" was years worth of development for Odette and Derek, only to be pretty much meaningless throughout the movie. Derek couldn't even think of ways to describe her till the end, and even then we didn't really get to see it that much. Also, why couldn't Odette's father say Rothbart took her, and is using dark magic. Im willing to beleive she started feeling something for him first and was waiting for him to reciprocate, only to be disappointed whith the "What else is there?" line.

I mean Garrett was no better since he was feeding into the fire but I don't blame him, I wouldn't be nice to a bitch that just invaded my house and insulted me either. I feel like the only reason he let her tag along with him after finishing his solo was just because he knew she probably wouldn't go away if he did tell her no. The only scene where I felt they actually shared a moment where they could stand to be around each other was when he was teaching her how to strike at the right moment with his staff. I don't count the damn song where they were singing to each other after Garrett almost bled out to death from getting slashed by Ruber because that moment felt so forced and fake to me since neither of them liked each other up til that point.

I don’t take these characters too seriously for myself rewatching this movie TODAY-it pokes fun at its caricatures-but in the spirit of “hating” Prince Derek: At the end of the movie, he tells Odette he admires her kindness and courage, which seems to speak more to how she supports HIM. How would he know what kindness and courage she demonstrated for others (her best friends, the turtle, frog, and puffin). She’s also smart, clever, and feisty-she beat him at all the games and slyly returned his physical pranks. That Derek keeps around the same halfwitted guy (who is no match to Derek in chess, hunting, or c- c- c- courage) for his friend makes me want to psychoanalyze him.

Its funny how Odette had a swan themed wedding, got married in the dress Rothbart designed for her, and then moved in to his castle.

Happy birthday! I watched all the movies but even as a child I thought Derek was trash

this is one of those movies that, when i was little, helped me form from a rat into a human being. but i also have really poor memory so i dont remember any of it LMAOO. i was planning on rewatching it to reconnect with that part of my childhood, but im so glad you made a video reviewing it, because now i dont have to suffer through my derek hate alone KJDSKDSK

The universe wanted me to know today was a Swan Princess day because the practice song came into my head out of nowhere like an hour ago. I hope you had a lovely birthday and, yes, Derek is a complete tool but I bet he compensates where it counts.

OMG no way hahaha thank you 🥰

@@SophiaPhannn I had this thought after watching but have you seen the Toei Animation Swan Lake and The Little Mermaid anime movies from the 70s? They're both more faithful to the original stories but probably sadder.

No, but I swear Derek gets WORSE in the second movie. Odette sings a whole song about how he doesn’t love her anymore and doesn’t spend any time with her.

I watched this a few times as a child and I'm sure it was purely for visual reasons. I distinctly remember kinda having a hyperfixate on the way Odette's hair was animated/how it moved so smoothly, to the point of being a core memory lol

The funny thing is I have nostalgia for the 2nd movie as it was the only I had. I would constantly watch and when I got older it was like - why'd you watch this little me? It was bad 😂 But I'd really like Sophia to check out the second one two. It would be nice

I’ve actually never seen any of the sequels LOL

@@SophiaPhannn give the 2nd one a try. You'll be changing your tone on how bad this one is when you see the bad sequel 😂 but it's fun though

I have the same thing with Nostalgia for the only one I had but for the 3rd. I ended up seeing the second in primary school and not seeing the original till I was an adult! Looking back I think I got the best deal haha. Even one of Speed’s jokes was funnier when I didn’t know “Far Longer Than Forever” was a song. I thought he was just being a philosophical turtle whilst Jean-Bob was being literal, vain and annoyed cause his training session was interrupted! 😂

Busting out the tiara, I like it! Happy Birthday, Sophia! this is also a movie I watch with nostalgia glasses. the song "Practice" lives rent free in my brain, sometimes.
